There are so many burger joints that it's hard to stand out. Let me give it to cheval. All of the ingredients are fresh. I got the single patty cheeseburger because I'm not fond of double patties. It was just enough. I really would've preferred one patty the size of their double. Alas that's not what they do. I also saw they had chicken but the burger should be their signature dish. To start, beautiful interior. BUT, there aren't enough small party table other than booths along the edges. Most of the interior is made up of large round picnic style tables that force customers into communal seating. The food menu is small. The burgers were good but uninspiring. The fries were hot and good. The shakes were supposed to be a highlight, but my wife found them to be just ok. I've eaten at the wicker park location many times and the food has been good. Expensive, but good. The Rosemont location cost me $47 for two burgers, one fries, two fountain drinks, and tip. The food was... not good. The meat had an odd texture, the flavor was best described as unseasoned and the grease in the burger and overcooked fries rivaled the worst Taco Bell experience of my life. Today we went to try Small Cheval we've been to Au Cheval. Small Cheval was great! We did not have to wait too long for food and lines are short. I did get myself the kids cheese burger which is a single cheese burger. The fries are a great portion to share between two people. Their aioli is not as good as Au Cheval but still is good in its own rights. We would not get the strawberry shake again since it states more like bubble gum/artificial. The ambiance was wonderful for today's warm weather. The roof was off so we could enjoy the natural sun while being inside the restaurant. read more

The ambiance is great, service was very good. The outdoor atmosphere (all indoors) was very nice. I was way underwhelmed by the dry burger. It was just "meh." I had to ketchup it up a little to add some flavor/moisture. The fries were okay. I would absolutely prefer a properly made 1/4 pounder from McDonalds, unfortunately those are hit or miss. Though their menu is very small, the food doesn't disappoint. The indoor tree really makes the restaurant feel more open and bigger than it actually is, and it has comfortable seating. Service is fast and the cashiers are very kind. I ordered two cheeseburgers and a vanilla and strawberry milkshake. In the photo, it shows a salted caramel milkshake, but that was a fault on our end. They said they would make us our strawberry milkshake, and we could keep the salted caramel one for the trouble. That made us very happy! Like many people in the area was really looking forward to trying out Small Cheval. Unfortunately overall we were not impressed, the food was all good but to me did not align with the cost. We ordered 2 of the Waygu burgers, fries with the cheese and truffle sauce and chicken tenders. Total cost was around $78. The burger and fries both having nothing wrong with them do seem to be a McDonald type food. I had seen other Yelpers mention this but had guessed it was someone's bad experience, I can confirm this was also ours. I will say though all of the sauces are excellent which help step up the fries. The menu also suggests they serve "hand spun" milkshakes. I ordered a Strawberry shake to then notice the hopper in the back labeled Strawberry and another for the salted caramel. This location is adorable, the outdoor patio vibe indoors is great for rainy days. I checked this place out on a day it was raining on and off, but warm outside. It was nice that they had the patio windows opened up to let the breeze in. The burgers are as good as I remember them when they first opened a Small Cheval in Wicker Park. The prices aren't bad either, considering the size and how expensive burger places have gotten in general. The one thing to note is that their standard cheeseburger is a double, and it's huge. I definitely could have ordered the kid's burger or asked specifically for a single. The fries were hot and crisp with a side of garlic aioli and ketchup. I just drank water, but next time I'd like to try a shake or grab an ice cream cone. They looked really good from what I saw at tables around me. Overall, the service is polite and quick. You don't interact much with the workers since you order at the counter and come pick up your food. There isn't table service. If you haven't tried it yet, it's worth checking out. read more

The look on the inside is very unexpected from the outside, amazing outdoor feel with the huge tree and outdoor seating. The vines and lights is very cute and fitting and I felt like I wasn't dining inside at all. Very much eye candy. Service was amazing and fast. My sister accidentally ordered a vanilla when she meant to order strawberry, and we I asked them to give us a strawberry one instead, the workers insisted that we keep the vanilla one. Some people would prefer to exchange it but we decided to keep it because why not? Free milkshake! Therefore the service is beyond satisfactory. The milkshakes were okay, nothing extraordinary, but I won't take that into account too much. The strawberry one tastes a bit artificial, as my sister has stated. The salted caramel isn't too sweet, but I like that, and it's not too thick so you're able to suck it through the straw. At last, the food: Burger was juicy, not to much bun, and the patties were lacking a bit of seasoning, but the fries were fresh and amazing, paired beautifully with the garlic aioli sauce, flavors made the saltiness of the fries burst. Was excited to have a Small Cheval closer to the Burbs based on how many times the original and Au Chaval are on the top places to get a burger in Chicago but don't see going back again. The burgers were good, nothing special and not worth the cost per person once drinks and fries are added to the order. CANED soda, $3.00!!!! For a 12oz Can!! ABSOLUTE ripoff! $4.59 for Fries. $9.00 - $11.00 for burgers Total for two adults and 1 child was $60.00!!! A kid's burger is the same cost as an adult burger, like what's the point?!?!? The establishment is modern and nice, parking $ucks, tables and chairs really uncomfortable! Wood benches and wood stools, couldn't wait to finish our food so I could sit comfortably in my car. It was busy on a friday night, easily a 20 minute wait to place our order and another 25 minutes for our meals to be ready, just enough time for the canned soda's to start getting warm. I was longing for the day I would return to small cheval and eat a burger but after 3-4 years of trying it just wasn't the same. Maybe it was just this location that didn't hit the spot but I don't remember their menu being this big. When I tried the original small cheval their menu was simple and the food was perfect. Well this location I walked into and it was fairly busy so I got in line and it moved pretty quick. After I placed my order I stood up and waited for about 10 minutes and couldn't find a spot. The place was so busy and there were just too many families for a single person to sit was almost impossible with the layout. Anyway my buzzer went off and I picked up my food and asked a kind family if I could sit with them at a round table. For me the star of the show was the garlic aioli sauce. That was the only thing that has remained the same since I came a few years ago. The burger wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing as it used to be. I think their bread is different than it used to be, because it didn't have that softness to it. My burger patties were cooked how I normally like it, medium but not too well done but it was just lacking a bit of flavor. The fries were warm but they weren't fresh, I could tell they'd been sitting out for a while, but the garlic aioli made up for that. Small Cheval left a BIG impression! Comparable to a P.Terry's or an In-N-Out the burgers are roughly the same size. The flavor was great and I'd definitely recommend getting the fries to accompany your meal. The establishment is pretty nice and it's spacious too! Before the lockdown, I worked downtown. Once a week, I would treat myself to lunch out. One of the places we would frequent was Small Cheval at 150 N. Riverside. Earlier this week, I was thrilled to find out there is a suburban location in Rosemount. A group of friends went this weekend for dinner. If you are not in the know, Small Cheval is referencing its big sister Au Cheval on Randolph at Halsted just west of the Kennedy Expressway. It was explained to me that Au Cheval in culinary terms is "topped with a fried egg"; Small Cheval does not have the egg option and is more casual. The Rosemount location had a fair option with the interior having brick pavers, umbrellas, and imitation trees. It reminded me of the county fair section of Great America in Gurnee. The food is limited. Burgers, cheeseburgers, fried chicken strips, french fries, milkshakes, and soft serve ice cream. There is a bar for beer, wine, and some cocktails. We ordered a double cheeseburger and a 4-peice chicken tenders. The burgers were excellent, as expected. The soft brioche buttery bun stood up well to the juicy burger. The chicken tenders were hand-breaded and crispy. While we were finishing up an employee approached our table with two ice cream cones on the house (maybe son one made an extra by mistake?), they were appreciated and a nice finish to a casual meal. It was about $15 per person plus beverage. Water is free (there is a tap at the service area with the napkins and cutlery),bottled water, iced tea, or soda is $3 ish. Beer and wine is $5 - $12. Cocktail and frozen signature drinks are $13. We all made note of how nice the bathrooms were - these were luxury hotel level bathrooms. There is a drive-thru if you want to pick up food from home. Everything came in biodegradable containers; the available cutlery was even compostable. At the price point and menu selection there were a lot of families there. We all noted the bathrooms were at luxury hotel level and well maintained. read more
