I LOVE bagels. It's a well known fact about me. Small Mart makes exceptional bagels, and the most creative bagel sandwiches. I ordered the chum bagel which pairs lox with apple slices. It has to be one of my favorite breakfast items I've had this week in Nola. One more note-they have many vegetarian and vegan options! Typically I am neither, but I think vegetarians and vegans would find a dish to love here. This shop is small, but there is lots of seating indoors and outside. You order food at one bar, and the coffee at the other. Everyone here is so personable and was so kind to chat with me about the menu when I was torn between many options. They have a bathroom that was very clean. I can tell the food and drinks here are made with love. It is a little walk from the French Quarter, but it is a walk well worth it. read more

It's difficult to say how much I loved this place. The staff were super friendly. I had a NY bagel and the Curry of the Day. Both delicious. The bagel was overloaded with fresh everything. The curry was a lentil veggie curry with huge pieces of butternut squash. The bathroom was nice! I know that's unusual to say but it was a large tiled room, clean and decorated. Loved it. They share the space with Pond, a fancy coffee spot. Next time I'll have to go when Pond is there but it was a bit late in the day. read more

Cute place in the Bywater. Have driven by it many times as my niece goes to school two blocks away but have never stopped in. Decided to give it a try and was not disappointed. Amazing staff and wonderful bagels. Got the Philly and that bagel was AMAZING. That bagel shop on Freret used to be my fave but Small Mart is my new spot. Small seating area (maybe 20 people can sit inside). They offer juices and have a coffee shop inside too. This place is perfect for the Bywater area. Small Mart is a great place for breakfast or lunch! Very cute spot, very friendly people. Share a space with pond coffee which I love! Ordered a New Yorker and it was good, but not my favorite. Bagel tasted a bit stale--wouldn't pick it over other bagel spots in the city especially given that it was more expensive. I visited Small Mart twice during my most recent one night stay in New Orleans, and I gotta say - very solid spot! The first time we slipped in, it was like thirty minutes to closing so the counter person said she could only fix up some vegetable curry for us. We were fine with that suggestion, and I'm not sure what I was expecting, but the curry was really quite delicious! Just slightly spicy, but the veggies were well cooked and I believe there was chickpeas in the mix. I suppose I was suggesting something rather basic and bland, but naw, I would definitely happily eat it again! Was definitely a hearty meal and then some. The next morning we returned and opted to try some of the bagel sandwiches. I don't quite remember which one I opted for, but it was one of the vegan ones . . . and like, the fact there was a fully vegan bagel sandwich without any substitutions or modifications thrilled me more than it probably should have . . . Anyway, can confirm that my two friends and I very much enjoyed our bagel sandwiches. Granted, the order took forever and a day to prepare, but it was a rather busy Sunday morning. As you can probably garner by the the name, this is a rather "small" spot, so I wouldn't necessarily plan on sitting here and enjoying your goodies, unless you come during an off hour. I waited to review this place after visiting a couple times. Every time was great! The bagels are very good. I've tried pumpernickel and an everything bagel. They don't waste day old bagels by throwing them out like a lot of other places. Instead, they sell their day old bagels for cheaper! If you get it toasted (which why would you not get a bagel toasted anyway?) you can't even taste a difference. The Norwegian on pumpernickel was amazing!! It's my favorite!! They also have an awesome menu of cream cheeses and their humus is very fresh. I would recommend to anyone looking for breaksfast, brunch, lunch, or a snack! Service is always wonderful! I seriously need to revisit this place and try all the things located in this cute little vegan cafe tucked away in the Bywater. They have a really nice menu selection from chaat bowls to lox bagels to tuna salads. I made my own bagel combination with the onion bagel and salmon spread. The spread tasted mostly of cream cheese but the onion itself was really flavorful with a nice chewy texture. My friend's chaat bowl was also really yummy with its chickpeas, veggies and "wet sauce". This restaurant was a surprising find for me that I noticed upon walking by. I feel sorry for them, in that the street in front of their store is presently being torn up and replaced. You could argue that might date this review, and knowing New Orleans, I expect that a shiny new surface will be in place by 2050. For right now, I would park on one of the main roads and walk here. Bywater is one of my favorite neighborhoods to eat in, but not to drive through. The food is a mix of bagel sandwiches and Indian fast food. While the bagels did look appealing, I went for a samosa and a chai. The chai packed a nice black pepper punch on top of a rich mix of spices (and not sugar). My samosa was quite excellent, with some cashews mixed into the pea and potato filling and a mango chutney on the side. You can eat in, if you're not claustrophobic; they've taken what used to be a nice dining area (for Bao and Noodle, if memory serves, which has since moved to yet another spot) and plopped an espresso bar in the middle of it, leaving very little space for actual customers (to be fair, you can't say they didn't warn you, what with the name and all). The sign says vegetarian, which this restaurant isn't quite (offering some sort of fish as a bagel topping), but it's certainly a welcome addition to the scene and may very well be the best place to get a samosa in New Orleans. read more

Small Mart is a gem of a spot in the Marigny that serves a wonderful selection of drinks (Pond Coffee), breakfast foods, and lunch items until early afternoon. I've visited twice in the last couple of months and thoroughly enjoyed both meals. In March, we had carryout of toasted everything bagels. I got mine with tofu cream cheese, capers, tomatoes, and red onion. My friend went with plain dairy cream cheese. The bagels were fresh with a crispy exterior and chewy interior. Delicious! Before visiting last week, I saw on social media that Small Mart was offering a vegan egg, cheese, and (carrot) bacon bagel sandwich and homemade chai. I had to try them! The filling sandwich was a phenomenal start to the day. The chai was a bit strong for my own taste but you could tell it used real tea and spices (made in house). Another special that looked amazing was the vegan muffaletta. I've not tried their lunch offerings yet but friends who live in the neighborhood rave about them. I've earmarked Small Mart for a lunch on my next visit. read more

So I MIGHT have been one of those people once but I've seen the light and the source of that light is Small Mart in the Marigny. I already have extolled the virtues of their vegan po-boy and yes, I'm so deeply grateful that if and when I'm in the mood for one, I can walk a few blocks and get one. But their bagels are also divine and I saw too late that they have vegan cream cheese, but that's OK because their bagel sandwich with hummus, lettuce, tomato and avocado is the bees knees. Everything, actually. Everything bagels! This visit was at the end of their typical lunch rush so no lines, easy peasy. I'd been recommended here for their bagel sandwiches (especially the Salmon Lox, which they call The New Yorker). I was starving and it came out very fast. The server even cleared off a table for me when he saw I had a laptop and possible work to do. The sandwich was stacked with cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers, tomato, & onion. The woman who took our order was super friendly, the ambiance is chill, and the food is a-mazing! My friend & I tried both the Gringo and the Vegan L.B.T. on everything bagels for our first visit. For my first visit, I had a curry for $6 that was authentic and absolutely delicious. I also tried a housemaid bagel with chive and scallion cream cheese. The cheese was absolutely stacked with scallions. Both items were scrumptious. It's certainly a grab-and-go kind of a place, not somewhere to sit down and enjoy a meal. This is a lovely place for getting snacks and breakfast. I no longer eat bagels but I've had his Indian food and it's delicious. Brian is a talented chef and so sincere and even his banana nut walnut bread is very very tasty! It's a cute and cozy interior which I finally saw last week. Previously during the pandemic it was window service only. They did amazing precautions to remain in business throughout the pandemic and I commend them for that. But back to the food, the samosas and samosa chat are both delicious! Chutneys are on point and Brian can remember your food allergies and preferences like a steel trap! I just have to re-review Small Mart bc it is my absolute FAVORITE and I so appreciate all their wonderful Vegan options, friendly and efficient staff, and affordable prices. Today, my sister and I stopped at Small Mart and got the vegan poboy with pakora and the samosa chat with curry sauce (I requested no cilantro on either bc my sister hates cilantro). Everything came out quickly and perfect and was so delicious!!! We took it over to Crescent Park and enjoyed it on the swings. It was a lovely picnic! Who would of thought such a well curated convenience store could come in such a small package. I was looking for a grab and go breakfast in the area on Yelp and saw this place pop up for bagels and I was intrigued. With super positive reviews I knew we had to check it out (Yelp rarely steers me wrong). Hot damn! A huge variety of bagels welcomed us when we entered. Poppy seed, everything, egg, cinnamon raisin, blueberry, whole wheat and more. Cream cheese options included original, chive and scallion, curry, honey walnut, sun-dried tomato, pesto, jalapeño and more. Plus, make it a whole sandwich with smoked salmon, red onions and capers or go vegan with humus, avocado, cucumbers, red ion, carrots, lemon vinaigrette and chili sauce. We ordered five bagels, with a variety of schmears and one as a sandwich, plus a coffee and a soda. Our total was a whopping $23! Dang what a deal. As we were waiting we could tell this was a locals place. Two fireman and a barista stopped in before their shifts and the staff knew them by name. One asked if the curry was ready (the delicious aroma was filling the place) and although he was told it still had an hour to go, they offered to carry it over to the station for him later. I dove into my bagel on the walk back and I was first taken about by the amount of schmear. It had to be 3/4 of an inch thick! And oh man, that chive and scallion cream cheese paired with the toasted everything bagel was pure heaven. They kindly granted my request to replace the rice in the chaat bowl with greens and it was exactly the flavor explosion I needed after a week of conference food. They're literally so kind! I called around 5 PM since they were one of the few bagel shops still open. My little brother wanted a singular, plain bagel for his birthday. They were only selling poppy, sesame, and everything bagels that day. BUT, they decided to make a singular, plain bagel for my brother.
