Clockwise from top L - Red Velvet, Wedding Cake, Birthday Cake, Peanut Butter Chocolate
Mia K.

For me it's important to support small businesses owned by women such as Smallcakes. This shop is eye catching and I like how each kind of cupcakes are individually displayed on their own fixture, not all one one shelf. The large cupcakes almost have a copious, bouffant amount of frosting. It was hard to decide on 4 for a birthday. Peanut Butter Cup - The candy and drizzled topping, what's not to love? Rich chocolate cake, too Wedding Cake - Didn't like the frosting, but the almond cake was great Birthday Cake - I'm not keen on the sprinkles but otherwise another delicious cupcake. Red Velvet - said to be "famous red velvet". Maybe it was an off day because we all agreed it was dry and lacked flavor. 4 stars for the cupcakes, ambience and price but I have to deduct 1 star because service was slow. There was 1 person working and it was a wait for her to make someone else's drink. Coffee and blended drinks are also sold here. Mini cupcakes and cookies are available for catering. I'd come back if the service improves.

I passed by Smallcakes on my way to work and decided to get my coffee from this place. I ordered a Caramel Latte with Almond milk and the coffee tasted good however the cost was not justified. $8 for a small 12 Oz cup is a bit pricey and I'd prefer to go to other cafes around the neighborhood than pay such an expensive price.

Out of this world cupcakes! Everyone that had one was in love. The frosting and flavor of the cupcakes are unreal. I tried the Reeces PB Cup flavored cupcake and was in heaven. Great place to get birthday or celebratory cupcakes!!

Clockwise from top left- lemon drop, wedding cake, chocolate frosted, red velvet (by far the best)

This place was the cutest before their remodel-- there was always one lady working who was super sweet and conversational. Now, whenever I walk in, they seem annoyed with me that I'm there. I don't know if the remodel included 'act as cold as possible when people walk in' but I honestly haven't been back in a couple of months because the vibe is really off-putting. I do really like their cream cheese frosting so I rounded up to 3 stars.

Cute place but the cupcakes aren't good. Buttercream frosting on everything and most of the stuff sits out for too long.

Everything from here is most impressive and YOU WILL RETURN! The owner and staff are very friendly and are very appreciative of your visit. Fantastic customer service and never, ever rushed. Quite busy, rightfully so, but the line moves right along quickly. I have purchased practically everything over the years for myself, my company and my church and have had nothing but incredible responses. There are many choices of the tastiest authentic breads, pastries, etc. plus there is that cozy place to enjoy a fabulous soup and authentic French sandwich plus perhaps dessert. This is a true gem in Old Town!! Great history online about the award-winning owner in France and the US, plus his years in the business and proven techniques with pictures. The food was really excellent, as was the service. But it was ridiculously priced. The reuben sandwich was $28. It was a great sandwich, very lean, but you could get a sandwich as good for half the cost elsewhere. They only have a couple of kid's items, but my friend requested buttered noodles for her kid rather than the cheesy noodles. I got the hibiscus drink and lavender lemonade, both non-alcoholic, and they were very good. My little one especially liked the hibiscus. And we ordered the appetizer of whipped ricotta and honey; my daughter liked this more than anything else we ordered. We didn't have dessert at the restaurant, but ordered to go. The pot of gold was really good. There were little "gold nuggets" on it and that was my daughter's favorite part; good thing since I didn't realize it had a layer with Bailey's in it. It was very rich, and the cauldron was really thick chocolate (and actually was a struggle to get into, a bit!). The restaurant is small but it didn't feel crowded. We never felt rushed or unwelcome, and we were there for a couple hours (longer than I realized; it took an unusually long time to make two reuben sandwiches). Their pastries are really nice but somewhat expensive, like the rest of the menu. It was a nice, sophisticated experience.

Macarons are exceedingly and exceptionally difficult to get to absolute perfection. If this were a…read moreplace with two or three Michelin stars, I might be a little tougher. However, for a neighborhood dessert shop, these were as close to macaron perfection as can reasonably be expected. What I'm referring to is the crust/shell. If I'm correct, a textbook-perfect macaron shell is firm yet as delicate as a frozen soap bubble, with a much softer dough underneath. With these, I felt as though a hair (and I'm not exaggerating) of the firmness transferred from the shell to the dough. Again, I grant grace due to the inherent difficulty of perfecting this delicate pastry. Where these macarons truly shine, and do so more than any I've had previously, is their filling. I was able to try a salted caramel and a coffee. Both of these had very distinct flavors, not simply a generic sweetness with hints of something. I could have immediately identified these flavors, even if you hadn't told me what they were. While it was later in the evening and not busy, I still want to give points to the friendly and personable individual working behind the counter. Thus, while perhaps not a cross-town destination, Andersonville's Macaron Bar delivers products that can perfectly satisfy a sweet craving.

I was skeptical at first because it is a local chain, rather than a singular location. However, it lived up to the hype. Service: it was extremely busy when we came in. The line was almost out the door. They have a system in place for ordering and seating so it worked well and fast given how busy they were. We didn't have any questions on where to order or where to stand when waiting for a seat. The staff were friendly and helped us find a spot to sit at. Ambiance: classic cafe in a city. Loud chatter, but it's a vibe. Very colorful and fun interior with cool textural elements. We had a seat that was facing the street so it was fun to people watch as we sipped and ate. Food: amazing breakfast selection! We ordered the morning sandwich and barbacoa bowl. The morning sandwich had THICK scrambled eggs which were super soft and tasty. I could've used more salsa verde on it. The bread was barely toasted. I'd rate the sandwich a 3.8/5. It got the job done. The barbacoa bowl was "really good" according to my fiancé. A great source of protein, fresh ingredients, nice flavor, and great portions. He would rate it a 5/5. Coffee: I am a coffee snob so I am quite harsh when it comes to reviewing it. Their machine is a cute La Marzocco. Appropriate sized "for-here" glasses according to the drinks. Plus, they were really cute. Wide variety of drink selection from your standards to the more girly-drinks (if there is such a thing). We ordered a cappuccino and small hot mocha. Latte art 4.5/5, temperature 5/5, flavor 4/5. The espresso didn't stand out to me, very standard flavor profile. However, the chocolate in the mocha was delicious. It's more of a rich, dark chocolate. Nice thin layer of foam. Would recommend to try at least once when you're in Chicago! Glad to have stopped in.

The croissant wasn't filled, it just had pistachio cream on the top with a couple of nuts. I would order the shaksouka pastry again. The egg was cooked well, and the tomato was very good. They were supposed to heat it up, but it wasn't warm.
