I am absolutely thrilled with the cupcakes and birthday cake that I ordered for my daughter from Smallcakes. Mariya and her team did a phenomenal job and I was blown away not only by the creativity, composition, quality of ingredients, and customer service, but also by the incredible taste of the cake and cupcakes!! Everyone at my daughter's birthday party was raving about the cake and the cupcakes, and how beautiful and delicious they were. I can't wait for the next occasion to come back in order another memorable dessert! I HIGHLY recommend ordering from them!

These are the best cupcakes I've ever eaten!!! Clean shop with an assortment of cupcakes on full display. Unique, one-of-a-kind cupcakes are made daily. Even theme cupcakes for holidays are there. And of course, they have everything from gender reveal to faux Girl Scout cookie cupcakes! Service is great. Friendly, customer oriented staff. You have got to try these!

I am not a big cake person but these are absolutely delicious! They are so moist and perfectly sweet. I tried the red velvet, Mississippi mud, and the Boston cream ones. Great flavor and they are huge! I would definitely give these cupcakes a try.

Wow! This is all that I can say right now about the Smallcakes Jumbo Cupcakes. Wow... I order the following Jumbo Cupcakes: 2-Red Velvet 1-Carrot Cake 1-Boston Creme 1-Snickers Here we go... The Carrot Cake took me where I had never gone before. This creation was so moist and favorable that I had to apologize to my wife because I felt like I was cheating on her with this cupcake. I was in an intimate relationship with this cupcake. On a scale of 1-10, I rate this one a 15. My wife had one of the Red Velvet, and within seconds, her aura disappeared within the aroma and taste of this creation. When I asked my wife if I could taste some of this cupcake, she acted as if I asked for an organ. She did rave about how delicate the taste was. I thought about eating the second one I purchased, but my wife reminded me of how great a woman's scorn can be on those who mess with someone's food. I yield in my pursuit. My granddaughter devoured the Boston Creme and Snickers. When I asked her if they tasted good, she just looked at me with a face full of cupcakes, nodding her head in affirmation. Overall, all of these cupcakes were fire! I am highly recommending this place. The size, taste, moisture, and cost were well worth my continual patronage of this establishment.

Our favorite cupcake spot quickly became Smallcakes several years ago. Although not a Richmond's own cupcake shop, we simply can not resist these jumbo, moist, and flavorful cupcakes. I mean every regular and specialty flavor is absolutely delicious. We also order custom cakes throughout the year and they never lack in the details. The ice cream here is great as well. So if you're looking for a DELICIOUS cupcake, maybe a Smallcakes cupcake will help! Yum! I stopped by after lunch to surprise my boyfriend with a sweet. We both commented that they had to be some of the best cupcakes we've ever had. I had the Red Velvet cupcake and my boyfriend the Carrot Cake. The cake was super moist and the cream cheese frosting seemed whipped and didn't overwhelm the flavor of the cake. I want to go back and try them all!

11/7/20: I love cupcakes & definitely love Smallcakes. This was my first visit to this location though & it rubbed me wrong from the moment I went inside. They only allow 2 customers in at a time which I have no problem with. What I DO have a problem with, however, is poor customer service. The young lady who waited on me was NOT friendly & didn't say a word to me, even after I spoke to her. She kind of just stood there looking at me like I was a bother. Now, usually, I'd leave because places like that do not deserve my coins. BUT I wanted a treat & I wanted a cupcake. I ordered 3 cupcakes: Sweet Potato Casserole, Oreo, & one with sprinkles for my son. I have a punch card from a different Smallcakes & asked if they accepted it. She said they didn't and they use phone numbers instead, so I signed up with her. She then abruptly told me to insert my card & asked if I needed a receipt. I took the receipt and thanked her, but I really wanted to tell her off. Lucky for her, cupcakes make me HAPPY & I didn't let her nasty attitude bother me too much. The cupcakes were yummy, as usual. My friend did not enjoy Sweet Potato Casserole one though. The flavors did nothing for him. I'm not sure if I'll come back to this location. As much as I love Smallcakes, I can't see going out of my way to come back with the service I received today.

The actual cake in the cupcake, it's pretty good. Moist and good flavor. The issue for me is the frosting. I ordered an assortment of cupcakes but the frosting on all of the ones I tried had the flavoring of a supermarket cake. I prefer cupcakes that are professionally baked but taste more home made than store bought. These cupcakes definitely taste store bought.

These cupcakes are amazing! They're huge, moist, and very flavorful. I eat a lot and honestly, I'm perfectly content with eating just half a cupcake. They definitely have some weight to them. I really like that they have a lot of creative toppings to choose from and the quality is top notch. Best of all, the icing to cake ratio is perfect. Even if I refrigerate them for three days, I just let them sit on the counter for about 10 minutes and they taste just as good and fresh as they did on the first day. Mind blown! I've had many fancy cupcakes from a lot of cities and these are definitely some of the best that I've ever had.

Chocolate Cream Cupcake, strawberry cheesecake cupcake, and Peanut Butter Cupcake

Went in as a spur of the moment thing to research some local bakeries for an order I needed in the future for a friend that has soy allergies. Thankfully the company has listed on their bakery case a list of all allergens they used which was really nice to have listed out! They do use soy like most bakeries so I wasn't able to order future orders but while there figured we would give them a try ! The cupcakes are quite large! We split them when we got home . The selection they offer daily is great, something for any mood your tastebuds are in. We elected to try a chocolate/chocolate, a chocolate /peanutbuttee, and the strawberry cheesecake as well as the birthday cake one (unfortunately the person helping most have misheard me and we realized when we got home we were missing the 4th cupcake). The strawberry cheesecake was the crowd favorite , refreshing and light and airy but the chunks of cheese cake it it were devine. The chocolate peanut butter was a hit too. The chocolate was good but the icing didn't taste chocolate lily enough for me personally, it tasted more like normal buttercream icing with a chocolate hint. They also offer mini cupcakes, Icecream and sundaes that future a cup full of a cupcake cut up with Icecream in it! Reminds me of a birthday party where you had your cake and ice cream, such a fun concept! Worth the drive to midlo to check out this local business, if you go check out the birthday cake one and let me know your thoughts!

OMG, these cupcakes are so yummy. I thought I loved Frostings. I also thought I loved Pearls. Well I still love both of them but I now have a third favorite. The cake is so rich and moist. And they have nice specialty flavors. You also earn rewards for your purchase. I think these will be one of my birthday and special occasion go to cakes. read more

Sweet cupcakes and usually very moist. They post on social media the special flavors for the entire month in addition to their every day flavors. The daily flavors are pretty good. We usually get lemon, strawberry, wedding cake or chocolate cream. Some of their special monthly flavors are even better- Mardi gras, Italian cream cake and others. Good thing is you can order the special flavors anytime if you order ahead, but you must purchase a dozen. I only gave 4 instead of 5 stars because a lot of the flavors are just vanilla or chocolate cake with a different icing. Totally understandable for cost and efficiency as a business; was just a little disappointed at times when you think you're getting a special flavor and you realize it's the same vanilla cake and only special icing. They also serve ice cream! read more

The family took me to Small Cakes for my birthday and I was pleasantly surprised. Small shop in a strip mall with a few tables to enjoy cupcakes and ice cream. Cupcakes are sublime....so moist they fall apart, frosting just enough to enjoy and flavorful NOT just sweet. We enjoyed lemon, double chocolate, double vanilla, chocolate caramel, and birthday cake, of course. Lemon and Chocolate Carmael had fillings; others were standard cupcakes. They have monthly flavor specials and are bringing cupcakes from the back; so if it's not on display--ask. The employees are incredibly nice and professional (even when #4 son made a HUGE mess with his chocolate cupcake--so moist it just breaks apart). read more

The cupcakes that Small Cakes make are perfect with lots of flavor and and beautiful designs. They are located close to Chesterfield Mall.. we need one in Short Pump where I live. I'm addicted but only allow myself one every so often. The Boston Cream Pie cupcake is heaven...the hostess chocolate one and carrot cake also make my toes curl. My husband loved the mint chocolate one but they don't have it all the time. Sinfully delicious!! Do yourself a favor and become a rewards member. Best bakery around RVA! read more

First and foremost, it is difficult to find a bakery that is willing to make gluten-free items. Over the years, I told several people about the delicious treats and customer service at Smallcakes. I have influenced countless people to patron this establishment, and I purchased their cupcakes for myself, friends, corporate events, and parties. After the poor encounter last night, I looked at my bank statements (personal and multiple business accounts) and realized I spent a little over $2,500 in the past year at this establishment. While everyone was going on and on about Pearl Cupcakes, I told them to visit Sweetcakes. Unfortunately, after the service I received last night, I doubt I will return any time soon, or at all. In the last two months, the customer service I received from the young Latina with long curly black hair has been abysmal. I don't know what happened, but she used to be nice. I also work in the customer service industry. I know, at times, it can be trying to deal with customers. However, I make it a point to be cordial and polite, and I have never complained about the service at this establishment over the last three years. Last night she rolled her eyes when she saw me walk into the store. She then kept her eyes downcast and avoided eye contact, remained standoffish, acted like I was bothering her, preemptively told me I could not get a gluten-free cupcake made with the special flavor of the day, and talked to me in a tone of voice that was disrespectful and uncalled for-- especially when, as always, I said "please" and "thank you". There was no need for the disrespect that I received last night. This encounter was the last straw as she has been disrespectful and rude for the past two months. Unlike the other staff members, they allow me to purchase gluten-free cupcakes with the "special flavor of the day" as long as the icing is gluten-free. Two months ago, this young lady told me in a snide and condescending voice that they no longer offer that service. However, when I visit the store and the owners are there (her mother - Mariya? and father?) she is nice and diligently makes the cupcakes per my request. Smallcakes has been my establishment of choice for the last three years. I used to drive from Colonial Heights to Chesterfield, and now Henrico to Chesterfield- bypassing multiple bakeries to purchase their products. I do not need to be disrespected while I am giving someone my hard-earned money and freely supporting and promoting their establishment amongst my colleagues, friends, and family. After two months of disrespect, I have concluded there are plenty of gluten-free bakeries options in central Virginia that I will now give my service: Pearl's cupcakes, Carytown Cupcakes, Frostings, The Wicked Whisk, Shyndigz, Lush Cupcakes, Buttermilk Bake Shop, WPA Bakery, AnnaB's Gluten-Free Bakery, SweetFix, Cupcake Diva, Wonder City Bakery, Pao Cakes, and Sweet Creations Bakery. read more

Not a huge fan. Tried the spot in Williamsburg and wasn't impressed. Thought I'd give it a try again thinking maybe I was off that day. I ordered 2 cupcakes, a Boston cream pie which was ok and a chocolate with buttercream frosting. Wonder if there was any butter in the buttercream?? The cupcakes left a good amount of oil on my hands after eating them. This would explain the moistness. Moist isn't bad, just don't care for that much oil. And they are a bit pricey. I'll stick to my favorite spot on Grove Ave. read more

While the appearance of the cake was lovely, the taste left a lot to be desired. The icing was not creamy. Tasted like pure sugar and corn syrup. It was actually too sweet. All guests agreed that at $70 for a cake, the ingredients should have been natural and fresh not corn syrup in the icing. This tasted no better than a cheap store bought cake. Costco and Kroger (whipped icing cake) have better flavors. read more

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your cupcakes! They are always so soft, moist, and fresh. My favorite is the strawberry cupcake and the birthday cake cupcake. People always complain when the see cupcake prices, but with anything you get what you pay for. I don't mind when the product is quality! Keep up the great work, Smallcakes! Omg!! This place is awesome!!! I didn't have a cupcake but my wife did. She absolutely loved them. She said they were moist and delicious. I had the ice cream. I had a scoop of the Butter cookie and Cookie Monster. The Cookie monster ice cream is blue and taste like cookie and cream. It was really good. Now because my favorite cookies are butter cookies I was in heaven. The butter cookie ice cream taste just like the cookie. Soooooo delicious. I will see be back for more!!! read more

Wow! a co-worker brought in these cupcakes today and I am IN LOVE! I had the wedding cake version and it was amazing. Often the frosting from a cupcake shop is way too much and way too sweet, but this one was perfect - Light, fluffy, sweet but not "give me a headache" sweet. I wish they were closer to me. Great cupcakes, but the owner leaves much to be desired in customer service. Learn how to treat people spending their money in your store and maybe your business will thrive more. Went here with my daughter tonight...OUTSTANDING!!! The best cupcakes I've had in awhile. Much better than both Carytown in Richmond and Buttermilk in Petersburg. Cupcakes were super moist and flavorful. Ordered breakfast the Red Velvet (delicious) and Boston Cream (omg) and could not believe how fresh and tasty they were. Will definitely be back. Also customer service was great! Almost as good as the cupcakes themselves. read more

Yummo! I love the cupcakes. They are super moist and fresh. I can't say that I've had a bad cupcake yet. I usually get them for special occasions around the office and everyone raves about them. They are very large...a single cupcake could be split between 2 people. Or you can be like me and just eat a whole one by yourself. The rewards program is nice...you'll earn a free cupcake before you know it. read more

I found out they have gluten free cupcakes every weekend and they are delicious!!! Not only do they have gluten free but they will ice the cupcake with your choice of icing if you ask. They have all kinds of pastries and bakery items: cakes, cake pops, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, pies, macarons, pop tarts and even packaged drinks. I've gotten a few different cupcakes from them. My favorites have been the peaches and cream, top hat cupcake, pistachio raspberry and strawberry vanilla. Their tiramisu cupcake, margarita cupcake and the key lime cupcakes all actually tasted so much like the namesakes! Their cupcakes are mostly perfectly balanced sweetness: I haven't had anything that was too sweet. Their cakes look so beautifully decorated, but I haven't tried any. They look so good though! Everything in there are so aesthetically pleasing, and if the cupcakes are anything to go by, I'd say flavor wise, the other items would meet expectations! Definitely one of my favorite places in Richmond to get myself a treat and wouldn't hesitate to recommend!
