If I were writing a review solely based on the jewelry, I'd give them 5 stars. However, it's the people that work there that truly make the experience. My mother and I have purchased a few things from this store and are definitely happy with our purchases. However, there is the rudest woman working there! There have been a few times where my mother has been looking at some jewelry and the woman has made snide remarks about how she can't afford them. She'll point her in the direction of cheaper jewelry and makes these faces where her eyes roll and she feels like she's wasting her time showing us expensive jewelry. Guess what? We can afford it and my mom bought one of the rings that the woman didn't want to show her. I hate when this happens. People at high end stores too often think that THEY are high end people but they are actually employees that are simply there to show merchandise to potential customers. My wife purchased a very expensive watch for me for my 40th birthday from Smart Jewelers. She paid for it using her own credit card. Three months later, numbers on the watch face display fell off inside the glass. This irked me, as I still have a $50 pulsar I bought 22 years ago that has worked through myriad conditions without fail. I brought the watch in, and they said they would repair it. In the email notifying me it was ready, they informed me there would be "no charge", as if this was something I should appreciate. My wife went in to pick it up, with the original receipt/box/document that accompanied the watch. Apparently, I needed the actual fix slip they gave me, which my wife didn't have with her. They refused to let her take the watch. Now I need to make my third trip for a very expensive watch, and am suspicious of its authenticity considering it needed repair in three months after purchasing it. Sorry Smart, I'll stick with CD Peacock and other well known places in Chicago with any high end purchases after this experience. read more

I think these bad reviews are probably not telling the whole story because I can say with 100% assurance that Smart Jewelers is the best place to get beautiful jewelry in Chicago. My engagement ring, wedding band, and 1st anniversary earrings are all from here. They are totally gorgeous and I can't imagine getting a better quality diamond for a better price. Also, Joel, the owner is wonderful. He is so friendly and nice to work with, always coming to give me advice when I am trying to decide on a piece of jewelry. I was totally overwhelmed by the wedding band selection and he steered me in the right direction. I also stop in at least once a month to get my jewelery cleaned and they never charge me and are super nice. So my diamonds sparkle like crazy. Last month I stopped in to get my grandmother's watch a new battery and to have it taken in, and they didn't charge me for that either. Truly, Smart is such a wonderful place to do business. I'm shocked by the bad reviews as well. I received a Baume & Mercier watch for Christmas, and it needed a few links taken out. The sales lady, Fran was very friendly, w/o being pushy. When the watchmaster brought my Baume out to me, he even took the time to explain the watch, in detail, and educate me on things to preserve the quality. In addition, when the weather warms, and I need a link placed back in the band, Fran mentioned to bring it in for an adjustment at no charge. 5 Stars for customer service. I was refered to Smart Jewelers in 2005. We walked in and were greeted right away. The owner was walking passed and stopped to see if we had any questions. He also arranged for a sales person to assist us. We did buy a watch that day, and returned a few months later and purchased a second watch. We have continued to do business with Smart because of the Great customer service. After reading a review about not getting great or nice service, I was shocked. They continue to offer great service when we have been in the store. They are more then fair with the pricing, ( I have shopped them ). I'm genuinely not a person to give a company a one star rating since i'm a small business owner myself, but with all humility and truthfulness I never in my life experienced this level of unprofessional-ism from a salesman in my life. I simply browsed on the Smart Jewelers website to design an engagement ring and sent an email inquiring about the warranty, return, and service policies (information that was not readily available on their website). I was responded to rather swiftly by a gentlemen name Joel to contact him via phone to discuss my question. The next day I was called and Joel responded to me asking what questions did I have about the engagement ring set. I simply asked about the policies listed above and he responded in a condescending way "what do you need to know about the policies" " what warranty", "what are you asking for", "we don't have a return policy all sales are final". Joel A. Kagan does not know the first thing about customer service. He was very brash and condescending and did not create an environment where the customer would want to spend a significant amount of money to represent one of the biggest decisions you will make in life. Additionally, this company has no warranty, return, or any policies regarding customer service. I say beware because this place feels like a bunch of con artist who dictate their way into a sale. Years ago, we had the good fortune to connect with David at Smart on Devon. He took the time and effort to teach our daughter about watches while showing them. From the least expensive of their quality watches to the highest priced, he never rushed her, explaining all brands. His great customer service resulted in a sale, though somewhat modest. However, as our daughter's career moved forward, she bought other watches at Smart...Ebel, Cartier, and Rolex. You're thinking, "What has this to do with Smart Jewelers in Northbrook?" I'll tell you. Though their location and focus have shifted a bit....ie there are less watches and more beautiful jewelry in their lovely store - what has not changed is their service and expertise. I drove a long way to drop off an Ebel watch to have the battery changed and water tested. They were very careful in taking it in and writing down the serial number of the watch, design, etc, to identify it. I requested a quick turnaround because of a personal timeline. I was completely surprised, and very appreciative when they called much sooner than expected to let me know the watch was ready for pick up. There are many Jewelers to choose from in the Chicago area. Any of them can sell you jewelry and watches. However, if you are looking for something more...people who have been in the jewelry business for decades, who have the knowledge and connections to provide you with the fine, quality jewelry you desire, go to Smart. The service I received at Smart Jewelers was appreciably better than that I received at other jewelers. I was also impressed with Joel's advice and recommendations. Other jewelers gave me false or misleading information, attempting to make a sale. Not Joel. I researched and fact-checked all the information I was provided and Joel's was the only one who was 100% on point. That sold me on Smart Jewelers. If you're buying a diamond ring you want the peace of mind that your jeweler is knowledgeable and trustworthy. A few months after purchasing the engagement ring I brought my then fiancée, now wife, to look at wedding bands. After working with Joel on an engagement ring and his/her wedding bands, I can tell you that his goal is to help you find the best jewelry for your budget. This is definitely not the place to have your jewelry appraised or sold. Me and my husband brought in several vintage gold cuff links, some of them with semiprecious stones, some solid gold to sell. The sales person told us right away that all the pieces were rather worthless and could be purchased by them only as scrap metal, to which we agreed, although I had a feeling that at least some of the pieces had higher valuem and not just as scrap. The guy took all of the pieces to the back room, so we were not able to watch exactly how the pieces were weighted and appraised. Also, the stones in the cuff links ranged in weight, and they included jade, star sapphire, among others. The guy emerged from the back room within about 7 minutes - no way he had enough time there to take out the stones from each piece and weigh the gold! For about 8 pieces he quotes a ridicuously lw price of slightly over $300.0 - rounded up. We never found out the actual weight of the pieces, as I am sure, they didn't know it, either. My husband just wanted to sell the pieces, and we agreed to this deal, which was our mistake. The best part was when I visited the store a few days later and saw two pairs of "my" links, bought from me as scrap, in their display case, polished and shiny, and one of the pairs had a price tag attached of $1,200.00, "discounted" by, I believe 50%! I could not believe my eyes how they cheated on us. I have no problem with a store, making a profit by buying and selling an item, but all the cuff links had been appraised and treated by "Smart Jewelers" as scrap! Nevertheless, they were selling some of them as individual, "vintage" pieces at a much higher value. This is misrepresentationand dishonesty, to say the least. Iwas v Also, on the same visit I brought in a 24k gold ring to be sized - enlarged by 1 size, and the same guy quoted me a ridiculously high price for that, like $150.00 per each size up! Pure gold is very well mallable and as I believe, to size it one size up, would not require so much additional gold! When I asked about selling it, they quoted me a price of $60.00 for a 24k ring with three small diamonds. I was appalled. Had the ring size somewhere else, for the fraction of their quated price. Our foot will never, ever step inside this store again. read more

He attemped to humiliate me while shopping for ring in the $6000 - $8000 range b/c of a impatience 2 year old child. I will start out by saying this is the only Yelp review I have ever written, as I have never felt so disrespected in my life and have never felt so strong about a store to write a review. I am shocked at the other reviews because the way my mother and I were treated was incredibly different. My mother is getting married again and could not be happier, the only part in this process that has not been delightful is Joel and smart jewelers. As we are unfortunately stuck in a situation where we must buy something from the store (as much as I HATE to give them our business), we have returned to the store numerously to pick out a wedding ring. Joel has been increasingly rude to my mother. He was condescending, snarky and just plain disrespectful. I stood there as he spoke to my mother as if she was a child ("I told you three times already") and was absolutely shocked he could ever treat someone that way, especially a customer. During one of our first visits, he told my mother it would be possible to custom design something for her. The last time we were there he said "he would be happy to do it for any other customer but not for her". My mother is one of the sweetest people and has not been rude or problematic with this man at all, yet he has the audacity to speak to someone like this. I genuinely left the store feeling nauseas after seeing this man treat someone like that and I cannot stand the fact that my mother wasted her tears on THIS man. I highly recommend visiting Smart Jewelers. I inherited an older model Ebel watch recently. I wanted to start wearing it as soon as a possible, but I needed a few links added to the length. My first stop was Smart Jewelers, at the advice of a friend, I went there to have my pearls restrung about a year ago. The sales associates were very kind and said that I should come back when the watch repair person was at the store because he just might have the special links I needed. I was so anxious to be able to wear the watch, I went to three other jewelry stores that reported carrying the brand of watch and being able to make repairs. Each one of them said they would be happy to send the watch out to "see" if the links were available. I was not ready to put the watch in someone else's hands yet. I returned to Smart Jewelers on the day that I was a told the right person would be at the store. I, again, was greeted warmly by the staff at the store. I handed the watch over and the gentleman went through a drawer of little bags with different links. He found the right ones! He cleaned the watch and I was able to leave the store wearing the watch. My experiences at Smart Jewelers has been extremely positive. Joel and all of the other associates are very friendly, professional, skilled and knowledgable. Thank you! read more
