Update following the company's response: I want to clarify one point raised in the owner's reply so readers understand the concern accurately. Yes, I mentioned that I would prefer the panels be placed on the rear of the home if possible. That was simply an aesthetic preference and not a design requirement. I relied on the company's expertise to determine whether that placement would still allow the system to reasonably meet the goals discussed during the sales process. I also want to be clear that the system functioning is not the issue. We appear to agree that the equipment is producing energy as designed. The production numbers themselves have never been what I questioned. The concern I raised relates to how the system size and expectations were presented during the sales process. When we explored going solar, the conversations centered around offsetting most or all of our electric bill, which was the primary reason we decided to move forward with a $20,000 installation. If it had been clearly communicated that the system was intended to be a smaller "starter system" that would only offset a portion of our electricity usage, we likely would have approached the decision differently or waited until we had a longer utility history available. Another important point is that no written proposal or modeling documentation outlining the assumed household usage or projected offset was ever provided prior to signing. Because those design assumptions were never shared with us in writing, it has been difficult to understand how the system size was determined relative to our expected energy needs. As a result, we are now paying a monthly solar loan while still carrying a meaningful electric bill, which is not the outcome we understood or expected when making this investment. At this point, I have shared my experience and clarified the concerns raised. I do not intend to continue a public back-and-forth discussion on this review. My purpose in posting this update is simply to provide context so other homeowners researching solar know to request clear written modeling and offset assumptions before making a significant investment. read more

The whole process went very smoothly from estimates, permits, loan approval, installation, to actually turning them on. Overall, very happy with the experience. It has been a year now and I am very pleased with not having an electric bill for most of the year. I was able to take the tax rebate and re-amortize my loan to reduce my payment to be much lower than my average electric bill used to be. Jordan was careful not to recommend too many panels to that I didn't throw away a surplus when the utility company zeroes out my bank at the end of March. But my bank was used up in December and I purchased an EV, so I have started to get some large electric bills. I am going to go back to Smart Solar Energy to see how many more panels I should add. read more

We got multiple quotes, including doing DIY installation. Smart Solar came in the clear winner in terms of cost and stress reduction. They were not pushy and easy to work with on my timeframe. They were gracious when a week before install we found a problem with our fascia along the roof that needed repair which delayed the installation team. Smart Energy installed a 7kWh solar array on our roof and we couldn't be happier. From the beginning, everyone we spoke to was knowledgeable about both the technology and financial considerations. Unlike other companies we spoke to, they suggested installing a second array on our low-pitch roof and provided the analysis as to why it was a good idea. Jordan, the salesperson, helped us drill down into what characteristics we wanted out of a system and brought several system proposals from the designers for us to consider, along with lots of analysis to compare them. I recently bought a 12 kw system from Smart Solar and I couldn't be happier or more excited about it. Jordan was very helpful explaining the ins and out of getting panels put on my roof, payment options and the incentives from the government. WOO HOO! Solar on my house, no money out of pocket, and my power bills are pretty much 100% offset! #OFFGRIDBABY! Good bye carbon footprint! We have an electric car, so I got a new high-power charger put in too. So instead of it taking 18 hours to charge my car from mostly empty to full, it now takes about a third that time. I'm also really happy to know that my air conditioning won't be adding any extra CO2 into the air since I have some warm blooded family members who like to see their breath indoors in summer. The guy who showed up to check my house to see what was needed to make it happen was professional, very friendly, showed up wearing a mask and pointed out everything that was going to happen when they installed it and answered all my questions in a way that was easy to understand. I don't know that much about the electrical workings of my house, so that was very helpful. My electrical panel had to be upgraded but that was the only things that I wasn't really expecting. That would have cost an extra $2000, but they threw it in for free to honor the quote they gave me. That alone would have earned a 5 star rating and any amount of referrals I could send their way. Putting the panels on the house was actually the fastest thing that happened once it started-a small team and a truck or two and the panels were up in 2 days. One thing I didn't know beforehand was that it takes a few weeks after the panels are up before they're operational. The paperwork only took a few minutes and I was quickly approved...the waiting to get them installed was the thing that took the longest. I guess with the incentives being phased out, the company was really busy, so I was lucky to get them put on my panel in just a few short weeks. Our experience with Smart Solar Energy has been overwhelmingly positive and I recommend them without hesitation. I submitted an online query from an aggregator site and received communication from Smart Solar and some other solar contractors and met with Jordan from Smart Solar and a sales rep from one other company. I got two bids. Smart Solar and their competitor provided plans for the SAME sized system, offered the exact SAME warranties, and sourced the components from well-known suppliers. (Heck, Smart Solar even sourced solar panels from a Washington-based manufacturer while the other company's panels were manufactured in China.) Smart Solar's bid was 45% less than the competitor! All things being equal, Smart Solar was a no-brainer from the start! But it isn't just the cost. Project Engineer Jake was available at my convenience and did a quick but thorough inspection before he drew the plans, and our project manager Jenn has been an absolute jewel. Jenn was in frequent communication and available to offer answers or guidance at every step of the way; when our local permitting process got bogged down, she was able to get it taken care of; she communicated with us about when to expect delivery of the panels and the arrival of the installation crew; she coordinated the inspections from our local authority, Energy Trust of Oregon and Pacific Power, and walked me through the steps to turn on the system and use the monitoring app. I would - and will - highly recommend Smart Solar to friends and family. read more

We live in a fairly remote area just outside of Portland and decided to start reaching out to solar companies to install solar on our home. We aren't prepared to go completely off grid at this time, but we were interested in a hybrid system where we could produce most of our power with solar, store it in a battery, and when that wasn't sufficient for our needs, we'd pull power from Portland General Electric. We spoke with Jordan from Smart Solar on May 14th. He understood our needs and told us they could get the job done. We ended up signing a contract with them and scheduled the installation for June 10-11. I had no idea solar could be installed that quickly! They arrived on time, set the panels in place, ran wire, and followed through with the game plan for the inverter and battery location. The next morning, again they showed up on time, and proceeded with installing the remaining components and configuring the system. We're extremely impressed with their level of communication, both in-house and company to customer. Our system has been up and running for a couple of weeks now and we're very happy with it. We'd definitely recommend them if you're considering solar.
