So originally we were going to Willie Mae's, but it's memorial day and the line was 4 rows snaking out to the street and overflowing.... so then we drove 26minutes to Portside, which was closed!! I've been twice and both times for plate lunches, one a really big plate of white beans with a large pork chop and the other a salisbury-steak kind of dish with macaroni and cheese. If you are entertaining your cardiologist or a Top Chef producer for dinner, go elsewhere; there's plenty of calories in them there piles of food and the decor is well-worn by time. Mr. Poor Boy is one of those small family owned diners that has been around for a long while. (1969 if I remember the date right from the menu.) Dining area looks it, worn and comfortable, but not quite suburban casual. It's clean and the service is good. I tend more to take out rather than the dine in. I can phone in an order, run over here after work, pick up two dinners to go, and get home in time to pretend I had made dinner for us. Prices for the homemade daily hot plates are pretty reasonable and the food is good. Red Beans served with sausage is the Monday special. (what else would you expect in New Orleans?). Wednesday is spaghetti with a choice of 5 different meats to top the red sauce (well, depends on how you would consider the stuffed green pepper). Thursday has to be my favorite, the roast beef over mashed potatoes with lots of gravy and veggies. What a sloppy mess and I couldn't be any happier eating it. Of course, it is a po-boy house, just about any type you can imagine. They have every right to brag about their roast beef po-boy dripping with gravy. I like their fried shrimp po-boy. read more

Good but... No one preparing food was wearing gloves or hair nets. I have a problem with that, especially since the people preparing the food, also run the food out and bus tables. The place just has a cluttered, unclean feeling to it. The folks are pretty nice, and seem to know many of the regular patrons. They have a very small bar area (not a liquor bar) but don't plan on sitting down there. It is full of random items for the kitchen and bagged to go orders lined up. The area where they store the ketchup bottles/condiments for the dine in guests is horrendous. It is a cluttered mess. The place is small, and storage is obviously an issue. They have a glass front cooler right by the front door and register, which they use for food storage. I noticed a large container of brown liquid with something floating in it (maybe roast beef?) that wasn't covered. It was not appealing AT ALL looking at that while you're standing in line to order. In fact, I was planning to order roast beef, and decided not to because of it. I ordered a hot sausage po-boy dressed, with cheddar cheese. They toast the bread slightly, which I like. They used a bit too much mayo for my liking. The cheddar cheese seemed to be the pre-shredded type. They do not use Patton's hot sausage. Overall it was good. The fries were definitely nothing special. They had no seasoning at all (salt or anything), and were slightly undercooked. I wouldn't order them again. $10.71 was my total. I don't think I'll be back or recommend, due to the cleanliness. There are many other similar places around. read more

I had the Fried Catfish Friday Special, and it was a good meal. The fried catfish was well seasoned and cooked, the coleslaw and onion rings were just fair. I might have rated this four-stars but it disappointed me they did not include any utensils in the delivery bag to eat the coleslaw with. All in all, I would order Mr Poor Boy again and hope for a little better experience and quality. read more

I don't know why this place doesn't get more attention. For my money, yes I will say it, this is the best shrimp poboy in New Orleans. I am saying I will put this shrimp poboy up against Domilise's, Parkway, Mahoney's, or any other "well-known" poboy in town. Other than the fact that it is on Jefferson Hwy at the far end of River Ridge in a nasty strip mall, this place is fantastic. The shrimp poboy is always delicious and overflowing with large, perfectly fried shrimp. I used to get the large but could eat it for three meals. The small comes with so many extra shrimp that when you're done eating your poboy you have a fried shrimp platter left on the plate. I have had their hot ham and swiss and their hot roast beef poboys as well and all of their food is great. The actual restaurant is your typical strip mall dive with a friendly staff. They always seem to have the same customers in every day that look like they just arrived from the Harahan Elk's lodge, but everyone is friendly. If you're ever headed down Jefferson Hwy to the airport or are in the neighborhood or live in River Ridge, stop and get yourself a fried shrimp poboy from Mr. Poor Boy and you will definitely be back. read more

Sloppy, artery clogging, family owned diner kinda food. But I love it. Been eating there for years, different owners now, but still the same basic place. It's clean enough, the prices are cheap, and the food is good enough. They might be reaching a little with the daily hot plate specials. All the ones I've tried have been pretty good though, especially for the price. I have to mention the po-boy's. They are always good and adequately stuffed. The shrimp, roast beef, and smoked sausage are my favorites. Everything seems to be cooked to order. The dining area is comfortable, the staff is friendly, food is just as good when you get it to go. You enter, order your food, find a seat and relax. This place has a lot of loyal regulars. People who understand that a salad consists of iceberg lettuce and a slice or two of tomato. The red beans and rice had all the flavor of a warm bowl of water. I honestly think there were no other ingredients other than red beans, rice and water. No salt... nothing. So, I let the lady behind the counter know that they were not good at all. Her reply was "Oh really?" So, yeah, whatever. Even my mom, who used to really like this place, had to admit how terrible it was. The pork chop tasted pretty good, so that was my meal. Too bad that the 2 bites I had of the main meal were awful. I should have stopped at one bite, but I tried (unsuccessfully) to make them edible. At least there's Bud's Broiler next door, so I did get to eat lunch. Congratulations, Mr. Poor Boy! This was one of the first times I tried a real New Orleans roast beef po boy - and I've gotta say, this ones the best I've had of several I've tried elsewhere. Messy is an understatement... but every bit worth it. The menu has a decently wide variety of options - mostly home cooked fare and from what I hear it's equally as tasty (being that I've only gotten the po boy both times I've been). Big portions. Beers available, and from what I remember some other more unique bottled soda options. Friendly staff. A Hard Fall From Grace! I visited Mr. Poor Boy for lunch today and found they are under new ownership. The restaurant looks cleaner and is light about 1000 metric fu@k tons of Bric-à-brac. But, they must have thrown the baby out with the bathwater! Normally at lunch time, this place is packed and infested with locals Brah. When we got to Mr. Poor Boy the parking lot and the restaurant was empty except me and my friends. My first thought was to run away and fast. But, we are good sports and decided to give it a try. I thought,"Maybe we could be getting in on the ground floor of something great." "WRONG!" The normal lunch menu of daily specials was cut down from 7-10 items to 3. Just a side note if you are going to sell gravy of any kind in the NOLA area it better be homemade and it damn sure better be good. I ordered the (CFS) Chicken Fried Steak and it came with a side of mashed potatoes and peas. What I got was (CFSS) Chicken Fried Saulsberry Steak covered in Elmer's glue, Hungry Man mashed potatoes, and peas. The high point of the meal was the peas. "NOTE to the new owner if you are listing... STOP!!!! Your ship is sinking and fast! What you must learn to do and quickly is to learn to make a true New Orleans style Brown, Red, and White Gravy. Also, never ever ever ever serve Saulsberry steak in NOLA! You could be hauled off to jail if the Harahan Police find out. Server real steak and charge more money. Please for the love of sweet baby Jesus ditch the box taters. Homemade potatoes are so easy to make and your customers will love you for them. On to the GOODS... Driven by here a few times on the way to the airport and thought I'd give it a try for lunch. Lady behind the counter taking orders seemed a little rude and short when I ordered. I tried the roast beef po boy. Good sandwich although the bread is an important part and I've had better po boys around New Orleans. Bread had the classic po boy hard crust but the flavor of the bread was weak. Roast beef and dressing were good though. I'm more critical of their onion rings which were soaked in oil and were just average in taste. I've had better from national fast food chains. Guys who brought out the food were extremely nice. Small inconvenience but they don't take AmEx so for people with an AmEx business card you'll need another form of payment. read more

Had the Monday special - red beans and rice tasted like they were reheated, as if they were cooked earlier in the day and then microwaved. The pork chop was so undercooked that I had to stop eating it, in fear of getting sick.... pork is not suppose to be rare. I've had some ok meals there in the past. Bangin' roast beef po boy. One of the best I've had, and I've tried a lot. This includes Parkway Bakery, Seither's, Red Wagon... maybe even Short Stop. Maybe not quite as good as Bear's but it's up there. Plus the location is more convenient for me. Onion rings were good. Wife said the shrimp po boy was pretty good. They might need to call WebNola to build them a website with a menu on it because they don't have one online yet (with current prices). That's my only complaint but I won't take off a star for it. Nice Po-boy and seafood joint in a strip mall. The po-boys were good and we really loved the piping hot sweet potato fries. The sweet tea was good but we had to battle a swarm of gnats to get to the tea. The staff was young but treated us well. I arrived at the airport waaaayyy too early without realizing the poor food choices within. A Lyft ride out of here will cost you +$20 one way. So the best option was to order in.
