Photo SmilinDogs sent us on his injury

Konrad Thaler: in response to your defense: A. He did have a treatment plan for his dry eye. The fact that his eye requires daily eye drops and YET the first time you guys noticed his eye injury, 5 days into boarding, I REMIND YOU AGAIN, 5mm long and 50% deep and severely infected, is another sign that your team is NEGLIGENT and makes me question if they had even been administering the eye drops as directed. If so, why has this severe eye injury gone unnoticed UNTIL it was infected and bleeding out pus? Also, I mentioned his paw and leg were injured, and yet you twist my words and immediately assume he caused his own injury when he is in group boarding with many other dogs? I don't need to debate with you on which has higher likelihood. B. Pet insurance or not DOES NOT remove your responsibility for this traumatic experience. Money is not the point, the point is the accountability you need to take. C. The communication you noted is just your calls and texts asking about updates to his status and your seemingly odd interest in wanting to talk to our treatment vet to understand his injury "more". Your text and email AKSING FOR UPDATES are UNHELPFUL during the period when we went through weeks of intensive care and doctor visits for him, losing sleep and missing work. And yet when we did finally get a chance to reach out to you asking for medical expense reimbursement, you refused to take accountability and only indicated your policy is to split 50/50 up to $500. D. Tell any fur parent that their dog woke up from a nap and their eye started bleeding. See how many would believe you. This is not a public "emotional outburst" but a statement that you are dishonest about his injury. You can twist and manipulate words as much as you'd like but it does not change the fact on what we were communicated by your facility. Finally, you SAY you take full responsibility and you believe he was injured under your care, and yet what ACTIONS have you taken to own up to this responsibility? Your words are one way and yet your actions speak loudly the other direction. Looking at other negative reviews and the consistent theme of dodging responsibility, I think it's clear when we talk about character. Oh and btw, thank you for reminding me about his leg & paw injuries that he had also sustained while under your care. I've attached these photos as well. Also for your reference, I'm attaching a picture of him taken the day before boarding, just to remind you of what his eye condition looked like before your negligence caused his blindness.

Happy pup after a fun day!

Today was my pups first day of daycare and I was very impressed. Lucy was shy and didn't want to go in at first, but the handlers were very nice and used treats to guide her inside. It was very reassuring to see their caring attitude towards Lucy. I also really appreciated the positive reinforcement aspect. During the tour, the facility was very clean and did not smell "doggy" at all. All my interactions with the employees (in person and over the phone) have been very positive. I was really nervous about dropping my pup off, but after everything,I feel completely comfortable and at ease with leaving Lucy in their care.

My dog Pogue has started coming here since spring 2020. He didn't need daycare but the pandemic was severely limiting his social interactions with other dogs, so opted to find a place for him to get more of that. He occasionally does daycare but lives doing their hikes the most. From day 1 they have been super friendly, inviting and always answer any and all questions we have. Pogue is a full body player, loves to "talk," and can be "a lot." I am always nervous about how much energy he has and yet all I hear from Smilin dogs is how much they love him and all the fun he has with other dogs! And he comes home exhausted! It takes a lot for him to be exhausted another thing to note, last year I was teaching online (middle school teacher) and I would always put that on my hiking reservation because if someone knocks, he will bark and that's a huge distraction during class. Every single hiker would always come in so quietly and politely so they wouldn't disturb my classes. It was really kind and considerate. I just can't speak more highly of them!! Not to mention it always makes me laugh to see him on Instagram!

We've been taking our dog to Smilin Dogs for almost 4 years now. I went back to work a year and a half ago and what would have been a super stressful time was made a lot easier with my knowing Odin would be spending a few days a week at Smilin Dogs. Odin goes twice a week to daycare and once a week for hikes to Pascadero. He always comes home tired and happy. The staff is incredibly friendly and have a sincere love for all of the dogs. The low staff turnover is a testament of "happy staff leads to happy dogs which leads to happy customers"!

Hammie came home, took a walk around the house, and then collapsed in his favorite spot. Another great day hiking with Smilin Dogs pals...

Nice staff but overly restrictive policies, very expensive, and take on too many dogs at once.

Because of that experience, we began using the daycare service and boarding service, both of which are top rate.

We were looking for a facility and caretaker that particularly screens each dog, maintains a controlled "home-like" environment with open play and was accommodating to dietary/health/general needs. The screening process was strict but with good foundations, our dog passed with flying colors, and it's nice knowing the rest of the boarding family has done the same. Funny enough, Shinji was so attached to Kevin that he chose him as his human pillow during his initial overnight trial and that's when I knew he found his new "buddy and happy place away from home". Now he recognizes the drive and arrives with cries and wags even months between visits. Shibas come with great quirks though, and it was a blessing that Kevin welcomed ours with no judgment. Shinji is very play-driven and uniquely has a silly preference for doodle and herding dogs, and there is no shortage of those among a diverse range of family dogs in Kevin's boarding family. Kevin operates independently and it amazes us how open he is with communication and concerns while caring for his boarding groups at the same time. We get many videos and texts while we are away, and we are always confident that our dog is in great hands.

Upon contacting him, Kevin walked me through his thorough evaluation process to ensure that our dog would be a great fit for this place. He wanted to make sure our dog was comfortable as well as the other dogs that were already boarding there. Since our dog is super social, he had no issue with passing the eval and we were able to get him set up with daycare right away. You will do a 1/2 day of daycare first before you can start leaving your pooch here all day or doing a boarding session. Kevin's prices are very reasonable and he is very responsive via both text and email. We get plenty of pictures of our dog throughout the day and whenever we have a daycare/boarding need, we can just email him and he is very accommodating with our schedule and our needs. Kevin makes sure that our dog never gets any food that is not approved by us and will feed the dogs at scheduled times, separately. For boarding, the dogs get to cozy up directly on a human bed, which makes them feel like they are at home.

Our mini golden doodle has been going to Vicki's for 4 yrs and it's the best decision we ever made for him. He can't wait to see his doggy & wrangler friends every week and the ranch is a doggy heaven. A few standout things to note: *Vicki and the wranglers are extremely professional and are true dog lovers. *The pickup and drop-off service is really convenient, especially if you have an early start at work or need to go into the office. Our dog absolutely LOVES pickup and drop-off. He sits by the window waiting for the van to pull in and then is overjoyed when the wrangler comes to the door. *Our mini golden doodle always (and I mean always) comes home happy and tired. The ranch provides a space for our dog to run around and socialize to his fullest. *Quick communication and easy tools to schedule & message. Whenever we have a change in plans or need to drop a quick note, Vicki's team are quick to respond and always look to provide solutions or collaborate. * A special extra thing they do is celebrate birthdays and holidays. The pictures are SO cute and the dogs all genuinely seem happy when they celebrate.

I get our pup dressed in her harness in the morning, and she's picked up between 9am - 11am dependent on the day's schedule. Second, they put a huge emphasis on safety which provides great peace of mind during the day. Third, our crazy, rambunctious Vizsla is actually tired when she gets home every day. It's usually enough tiredness to carry her through the weekend after a full day of ranching. Vicki and her team are incredibly professional, the pick up/drop off is seamless, and they're very helpful if I ever need to cancel or recheck Lena ranch day. Plus, I get adorable pictures of Cinnamon and her friends uploaded to a Google photos album every few days!
