We have boarded our dog here for almost 10 years. Six years after the pandemic, they still do not allow customers into the facility, so you cannot see what is going on inside, and there is no direct communication with management. All communication is through a flaky customer portal or over the phone. During our dog's last stay, the staff did not administer a needed medication for the dog's paws. Per ever-stiffer rules, the medicine was provided in the RX bottle, with clear instructions. I was informed that the medication was entered in the system as "as needed". They do not have staff qualified to know when meds are needed. The dog was chewing his paws, so obviously the medication was needed. read more

My pup loves it here and every time I take her she comes back pooped. Big bonus.. she's very high energy and for her to be pooped and me get some down time = yeahhh :) I had them trim her nails which was a very reasonable price (thank goodness) and they did a great job compared to some of the grooming companies I've taken her to in the past. The staff is always so sweet to her and accept her crazy self with smiles and care. They offer a bunch of different services, like day care, a trip to the beach, grooming and boarding. I just wish they had cameras to check in on them or that the day care pawrents also got pics of the day or report cards. I know it might be a lot but that's why I think cameras would be nice. Also, I'd love if they had an individual play time or walk, since my girl seems to not potty while there and is always so thirsty when I get her. She's easily distracted so, she's the type that needs down time. Nothing to do with them just the type of pup and treatment she needs. They have separate areas for small, medium and large, so you pup will be in a suitable place. They do observe them playing as well. I did also appreciate that over assessment day, she was in heat and had her diaper / Chasity like belt on but they wanted to make sure that she didn't gave a bad experience, so they were cautious with her going into the group. read more

Konrad Thaler: in response to your defense: A. He did have a treatment plan for his dry eye. The fact that his eye requires daily eye drops and YET the first time you guys noticed his eye injury, 5 days into boarding, I REMIND YOU AGAIN, 5mm long and 50% deep and severely infected, is another sign that your team is NEGLIGENT and makes me question if they had even been administering the eye drops as directed. If so, why has this severe eye injury gone unnoticed UNTIL it was infected and bleeding out pus? Also, I mentioned his paw and leg were injured, and yet you twist my words and immediately assume he caused his own injury when he is in group boarding with many other dogs? I don't need to debate with you on which has higher likelihood. B. Pet insurance or not DOES NOT remove your responsibility for this traumatic experience. Money is not the point, the point is the accountability you need to take. C. The communication you noted is just your calls and texts asking about updates to his status and your seemingly odd interest in wanting to talk to our treatment vet to understand his injury "more". Your text and email AKSING FOR UPDATES are UNHELPFUL during the period when we went through weeks of intensive care and doctor visits for him, losing sleep and missing work. And yet when we did finally get a chance to reach out to you asking for medical expense reimbursement, you refused to take accountability and only indicated your policy is to split 50/50 up to $500. D. Tell any fur parent that their dog woke up from a nap and their eye started bleeding. See how many would believe you. This is not a public "emotional outburst" but a statement that you are dishonest about his injury. You can twist and manipulate words as much as you'd like but it does not change the fact on what we were communicated by your facility. Finally, you SAY you take full responsibility and you believe he was injured under your care, and yet what ACTIONS have you taken to own up to this responsibility? Your words are one way and yet your actions speak loudly the other direction. Looking at other negative reviews and the consistent theme of dodging responsibility, I think it's clear when we talk about character. Oh and btw, thank you for reminding me about his leg & paw injuries that he had also sustained while under your care. I've attached these photos as well. Not Transparent About Serious Incidents I'm extremely disappointed with the lack of transparency at Smilin Dogs. My dog, Sunshine, attended daycare and boarding here for six months. During that time, I was never informed of any serious behavioral concerns. It wasn't until I asked about a vague comment on his holiday report card that I learned of alarming incidents during his boarding stay. The report card stated, "He seemed to have a harder time settling in with more dogs boarding this holiday, but we were able to manage his behavior overall." When I inquired further, I was told he had engaged in "stalking and bullying", and was even allowed to enter another dog's crate while they were still in it. None of this had ever been mentioned to me during his boarding stay, at the time of pickup or IN HIS BOARDING REPORT despite the severity of these incidents. As a responsible dog owner, I would have immediately removed my dog from the facility if I had been informed of these issues. Instead, the staff chose to withhold this information, creating a dangerous situation for all the dogs involved. It's unacceptable that such critical safety concerns were only shared when I specifically asked. It's clear this daycare wasn't a good fit for my dog, but I needed to know that at the first sign of trouble--not months later. Bryce loves going to the "ranch" every Wednesday. He drags the van driver to the van he is so excited. Boarding is very laid back. They do not have to stay in a crate most of the day like other boarding kennels (did I hear someone say Wags Hotel!). They can pick where they want to sleep. During the day they can do and go where they want. just like at home. Or they can go to the ranch. Dogs play, sleep and roam the "ranch" with dogs their own size. Happy I found this place! read more

When adopting my dog, I knew they chose me because we had some yard space BUT we work full time and the kids have school. Leaving a dog at home during business hours all week long was NOT something we wanted for our new pup. Smilin' Dogs Ranch ended up being the perfect fit. Our dog is well socialized (she was a puppy when she started) and comes home tired. We send her to "camp" a few times a week regularly so she's not alone (RTO amirite?). I can't believe I am writing this review. I've used Smilin Dogs for over 7 years and had no real issues up until now. There is a severe lack of communication by the ownership/management and pet owner. According to 'incident' reports, which were never shared with me, my dog had developed bullying and aggressive behaviors towards other dogs - out of the blue. Then with little notice and no collaboration to problem solve or coarse correct. After one vague email and 10 days later a final call with the manager his reservations were canceled. Now maybe my dog is over the ranch and safety of other dogs is key. I get it. You would think after 7 years there would be a dialog about the problem when it began let alone when it persisted to a point he needed to expelled from the ranch. So disappointing. read more

They are so kind and amazing! My dog can be pretty shy with humans and getting comfortable around new people and they've been so patient and loving to her. She LOVES the dog ranch and is now comfortable boarding there which is a huge relief. The staff is VERY attentive and compassionate towards all the dogs. Cannot say enough good things! read more

Today was my pups first day of daycare and I was very impressed. Lucy was shy and didn't want to go in at first, but the handlers were very nice and used treats to guide her inside. It was very reassuring to see their caring attitude towards Lucy. I also really appreciated the positive reinforcement aspect. During the tour, the facility was very clean and did not smell "doggy" at all. All my interactions with the employees (in person and over the phone) have been very positive. I have been using smiling dogs for my dog boarding and sometimes ranch days for my dog. I haven't had a positive experience half of the time. During dog boarding or day care, I don't see the notes being followed. Also they don't take responsibility if any of your stuff (leash, harness etc) goes missing. I had a recent incident when they lost my stuff and the staff was unapologetic about it. I understand you have a lot of customers and I am just one in 100s so you don't really care about my business with you. At least take responsibility for the loss instead of just brushing it away. Or don't collect from the customer if you can't return them responsibly. read more

They lost my dog. Yes, you heard it here. They took him out to their "ranch" in San Gregorio in the morning and didn't bring him back. Don't ask me why they thought it was OK to take 7 dogs out in the morning and only come back with 6, but it happened. He spent several hours lost in the canyons and gullies near the facility. I had to drive out from the Peninsula and spent a good 4 hours looking for him. Finally, at like 10PM, in the dark and after bushwhacking through poison oak infested chaparral (literally! I climbed the side of a hill through brush to get to him) I was able to get him. This stunning level of incompetence is enough to make me never use them again. read more

We brought our dog here quite a few times over the last few months. The last 2 times he was there for the weekend, he came home sick. The first time he was sick he came home throwing up and coughing. He threw up for a couple days and finally threw up a large rag or piece of blanket he had eaten while he was there. I called and told them and they said they would make sure next time he didn't have a blanket in his bed. The second time he came home sick after another weekend there he was coughing and pooped pieces of a rag or blanket for days, so obviously they didn't care to address the issue after they said they would from the last time. When we first started taking our dog the owner called and said to call him if we had any questions or concerns so I did ask to speak to him after this second time of coming home sick. The owner claimed it was typical dog cold and because our dog wasn't sleeping enough and told me if I was concerned I should take him to the vet! Obviously the rag had nothing to do with a cold! I told him I was calling just to express my concern since this has now happened twice in a row (coughing and throwing up/pooping rags) and he told me if I was concerned to take my dog to the vet. He then proceeded to ask me if he should just send the final bill and remove him from their system! The owner obviously doesn't care to fix or clean the facility to make the situation better and only cares about the money so we will not be bringing our dog back. My dog Pogue has started coming here since spring 2020. He didn't need daycare but the pandemic was severely limiting his social interactions with other dogs, so opted to find a place for him to get more of that. He occasionally does daycare but lives doing their hikes the most. From day 1 they have been super friendly, inviting and always answer any and all questions we have. Pogue is a full body player, loves to "talk," and can be "a lot." I am always nervous about how much energy he has and yet all I hear from Smilin dogs is how much they love him and all the fun he has with other dogs! And he comes home exhausted! It takes a lot for him to be exhausted another thing to note, last year I was teaching online (middle school teacher) and I would always put that on my hiking reservation because if someone knocks, he will bark and that's a huge distraction during class. Every single hiker would always come in so quietly and politely so they wouldn't disturb my classes. It was really kind and considerate. I just can't speak more highly of them!! I'm also happy to hear you take such nice care of your employees, but that has nothing to do with my review. To further flesh out my initial review - our temperament screening was ultimately scheduled for 2pm on a Sunday. Given this time and Smilin Dogs' location, it took out the entire Sunday afternoon, but it didn't have to. It was only because they were so disorganized. We arrived around 1:50pm to find not a sign of human life. I knocked, no answer. After several phone calls to the after-hours number listed on the door, someone finally answered and said they would be outside in a few minutes. After 5 minutes, a man emerged from inside. Perfect! Ready to go. Wrong. He had no idea who we were or why we were there. He went back inside to call his Manager and spent a solid 5-10 minutes on the phone with her trying to figure out what he is supposed to do. I thought temperament screenings are standard here? The man who did our screening was unpleasant and made it known that he did not want to be there. I was also completely puzzled why we were booked at 2pm. Could we not have come at 10 or even 11am? The screening left a sour taste in my mouth; I was unimpressed with the hassle of booking it, but the fact that it was so built up and such a big deal to coordinate - only to arrive and find the place deserted and finally meet this man who wasn't even ready for us... Not a nice impression. Still, I went through the daycare, hoping and praying that this was the final step. The excuses about my dog off-leash are completely unfounded. Before we moved to San Francisco, my dog regularly went hiking with us at least once, if not twice, every single weekend -- hiking OFF-LEASH. He has been boarded at a daycare for around two months total through his life. This is nothing new to him. The great outdoors are his home. My heart truly broke from this opportunity exploding. We had so much stock in Smilin Dogs being our one-stop-shop for dog happiness, and did absolutely everything they asked of us, but it wasn't enough. read more

I went back to work a year and a half ago and what would have been a super stressful time was made a lot easier with my knowing Odin would be spending a few days a week at Smilin Dogs. When the doorbell rings on pick up mornings, his tail starts wagging and he does that little shake (that my friend insists is a dog's way of "grooming" and getting gussied up). Smiling Dog advertises off leash hiking but my dog spent almost five hours of her day in a cage in a van. We were asked to drop the dog off before 8am as that was when the van would be leaving to the hike area. I was told by reception that they arrived there at 10:08. Upon calling to check on my dog just after 2pm I was told that they were already on their way back from the hike location, when I asked what time I should come pick her up they said she wouldn't be back until 5:45. Meaning for 5 hours she was in a van with no free access to fresh water. When I arrived to pick her up, I was understandably upset and wanted to speak to the manager however the receptionist would not let me in. I was refused access to the reception and told to wait outside "like everyone else" because the reception has been closed since Covid and remains closed for convenience. When I tried to ask to see where my dog would be sleeping that night they would not let me into the facility to view where she would be staying. The lack of transparency at smiling dogs is appalling. read more

Free pick-ups and drop-offs and a day of off leash running and swimming with a bunch of buddies. The staff couldn't be nicer or more helpful. They will even take care of the monthly flea/tick medication for you. Yes, ticks can be a problem, but then again, if you hike with your dog anywhere in the Bay Area you already know this to be true. The dog hiking service is highly recommended. Having your dog picked up, taken on a 5 mile hike on a ranch with creeks and ponds, rinsed, and dropped off again for a very competitive price is outstanding. Our lab-GR mix doesn't even miss us on work days because she knows one of Smilin' Dog's treat laden walkers is on their way. We also have tick and flea treatment included on our monthly bill, so the medication is mailed to us at regular intervals. For some reason, our dog was not a big fan off the overnight boading at the owner's house, but we haven't tried the new and improved boarding facility in San Carlos. I have complete confidence in the owner, staff, and facilities; and I'm totally jealous of my dog's daily vacation while I'm at work! read more

A tired dog is a good dog. Smilin Dogs offers an incredible dog walking service that my beagle, Rudy, truly looks forward to. He has been with this awesome service for over a year and we were truly happy when they added another day for pick-up in our neighborhood. Smilin Dogs will pick up/drop off your dog for an off-leash 5 mile hike. The dogs travel in a maximum pack of 12 through hills, valleys, creeks, and ponds. The staff is wonderful, caring and attentive. They will do their best to bring your pup back as clean and tick free as possible. But the due diligence is still the owner's responsibility. Be sure to read the back of your monthly invoice, as they put some really helpful info on the back, such as dog friendly cabins in Bolinas, tick removal meds and other good information. The idea of Smilin' Dogs is great but my actual experience has been only okay. After my dog went on a hike, I found six ticks on my bedroom floor and tons more on him. I know this happens but it's gross. I also learn that on their hikes, they don't pick up after the dogs. I know this is a private property but with 12 dogs per van, 10 to 12 vans a day, 7 days a week, that's gotta be a huge pile of you know what left behind. Can't be healthy for the hiking dogs. I don't think my dog will be going back. Update: About 5 days later, my dog came down with kennel cough. He couldn't have gotten it from anywhere else. After a vet visit and medicine, he's much better. read more

This is a great service but be warned that your dog will come back with more ticks then you can imagine. Also be prepared to see bite marks and cuts on your dog that unfortunately cannot be explained. If you have a hearty, high-energy dog this service is perfect. If your dog is a little more shy you might want to go someplace that offers more supervision. Regardless your dog will come back home, drink two bowls of water and pass out for the night. read more

Certainly a testament to the people working there. My year old Tibetan Mastiff puppy (all 120+ lbs of him) got out of my side gate and onto the sidewalk of a busy street in San Mateo. A Smilin Dogs van stopped and the driver/walker took my dog back into my yard and made sure my gate was closed and he was OK. I certainly will consider their boarding service when it comes time to find a boarding facility if they would take him, though I know he can't go off leash at their farm or on the beach as his breed is very independent. He's super friendly with other dogs (especially small ones) and people, but very BIG. My pug Nemo loves Smilin Dogs. I send him 3 times a week for day camp and I use the pickup/dropoff service. When they come in the morning he is always so excited and when he gets home he is always exhausted and relaxed. The people that work there are always friendly, responsive, and helpful. Whenever I have a schedule change - no problem. Whenever I need to add or remove something, like a bath - no problem. Occasionally Nemo gets a little over excited. One time I had him outside when they came for pickup and he attempted to jump into the van but didn't quite make it and sort of bounced off the side. He hurt his leg a bit and had a bit of a limp but they took great care of him and even called me the next day to make sure he was OK. read more

Smiling Dogs is fantastic. I have been a client for almost 2yrs and they have been great. Our dog Indy uses daycare, hiking and boarding. My schedule is complicated, but Smilin Dogs always gets it right. He loves the day care and boarding because he gets to socialize and play with lots of other dogs off leash. When I pick him up he is so full of play he can't stop playing tug-of-war with his leash! Indy also loves the hiking. During an open hike last weekend I got to see him in action and it was amazing. The dogs romp and chase one another. They especially love the shallow pond they visit at the beginning and end of each hike. It is pretty rugged terrain, but it is completely fenced and the dogs love it. He comes home dirty and tired but I know he loves being a real dog instead of sitting inside most of the day or walking on a leash. It is a bit of a drive to the hiking area, but the dogs don't mind. Half of the crates have window views and half do not. The amazing staff knows which dogs like to look out and which get agitated. Indy has never had great recall at home, but he always stays with the pack during the hike and I think it makes him better behaved. I always give him a bath and check for ticks, foxtails, burrs, etc.. Its a little extra work, but definitely worth it if you want a really really happy dog! read more

We have used Smilin Dogs primarily for puppy class and have been happy with the results. The class size is good, maybe 6 dogs with one primary instructor (Seth) and an assistant. The class doesn't overlook the importance of training the owner as well as the dog. We have also used the kennel service. The service is convenient. You put a relator-style padlock device on the front door of your house. This device releases a key when the proper code is entered. The service then picks up your dog, entertains him/her for the day, and returns the dog to your crate. Worked great. read more

I have been a customer of Smilin Dogs for about 14 months. My dog goes twice a week on Mondays and Fridays. My dog seems to know what day it is and sits by the gate to wait to be picked up. I've seen him rush to the van, jump in and, very enthusiastically, jump in his designated crate which is just behind the driver on the top level. He comes back tired, so tired that he seems content the next day too. I know it is great exercise for him, something that I could never provide for him on my own. The best part of it is that he is now 3 years old and he is very well behaved off leash. We even went walking around a duck pond off leash and he did not even get close to the ducks under voice command. Yes, he sometimes does come home with ticks but the drivers do their best to bring the dogs home as clean as possible. After a couple of times, it gets easier to understand where the ticks can hide. Before my dog went to Smilin Dogs I was freaked out by ticks. But these West Coast ticks are really not as scary and are easily found. Finally, there was one day that I wanted to track my dog to take him somewhere in the late afternoon. I contacted Smilin Dogs and asked them when he would be home. They called the driver and called me back within 5 minutes to provide me with an update. Their customer service is really exceptional. In summary, I will continue sending my dog to Smilin Dogs, recommending it to friends and anyone that inquires. read more

Smilin Dogs is a working pet lovers' dream come true. My large breed dog Simon has been going for over 2 years, 2 times per week. It keeps him in great shape! And the owners and walkers are wonderful - very professional and great with the dogs. As for the comment below regarding ticks - tick season is only a few months a year and it's not that bad, you just need to get a tick spoon from the vet and check them when they get home. Thank you Smilin Dogs for giving me the peace of mind that Simon is getting great care, attention and exercise. He loves it and can't wait to get into the Smilin Dogs van! An addition to my review - posted 10/2/07: I just got my latest invoice and as other reviewers said -- checked the back side which always has useful information. This month's invoice detailed the Smilin Dogs EMERGENCY PLAN! They have a plan in place re. how your dog will be cared for in the event of an emergency! How many of us can say we have an Earthquake preparedness plan for our families?! (And this is a great reminder to create one - for all members of your family, 2 and 4 legged). Really like this dog daycare service. We use the hike for the day service and it's a huge help. They pick up and drop off from our house. Our dog always returns tired and content. They have a big space for the dogs to go offleash with this service which is super helpful for my active golden retriever. They are very responsible about taking well socialized dogs and they use radios to keep track of them on their fenced in property. There's really no other service like this and it's a good value. Our mini goldendoodle has been going to Smilin Dogs once or twice a week since he was 5 months old. He has also done some weekend boarding there. We have been thrilled with the service we had received there. There always answer the phone during the business hours. Each employee knows my dogs name when we walk in the door and Snicker obviously loves them all. When we pick up, we often hear anecdotes about his day (if he played with someone and what breed they were, if he did something funny, etc). On a rainy day he was there, I got a call to see what time I was picking up so they could give him a courtesy bath before hand (he got super dirty that day). Bottom line, Snicker is always happy to go to Smilin Dogs. He is well loved and well cared for while there. Super flexible and a really nice staff!! We have been clients of Smilin Dogs for many years now and we can't really say enough about what a great company this is. We've used just about every service they offer -- boarding, training, off leash dog walking. And in every case, the service has been superlative and the care and love for our dogs amazing. Just this morning I came down the stairs and my two labradors were staring at me in a fret. It dawned on me that it was Smilin Dogs walk day and I forgot to put them outside so they could be picked up for their regular off leash dog walk. I rushed to the phone and called the Smilin Dogs office. They immediately reached the dog walker on her cell and she informed them that she was still in route to our house. What a releif. My dogs so look forward to this walk every week. if I say Smilin Dogs their tales start wagging. The access, service and attention to detail that I've seen in every type of service we have used at Smilin Dogs has been five star. The Dog Walker just showed up to pick up the dogs. She knocked on the door to say that she'd be happy to clean up the dogs when they return if I'd just leave a towel outside. I heartily recommend the Smilin Dogs team. We never dread or fear bringing our Dogs in. They love it and they are treated like the princes that they are. read more
