Tonight was our first time dining at The Forester, and we were blown away by how yummy the food was! Cozy environment, we were promptly seated at a comfortable booth. Valerie's service was warm and personalized, we were clearly from out of town and she was very welcoming. She had many stellar recommendations of her personal favorites. The clam chowder was outstanding / phenomenal (and we came from San Francisco so you know that endorsement doesn't come lightly)! I also enjoyed my Goulash with spatzle and kraut, creamy and it really hit the spot. My wife enjoyed her Jaegerschnitzle with potato pancake and kraut. Both delicious options! When I come back in the future, I want to try to Stroganoff and the Baby Back Ribs! And I'll ask for a table in Valerie's section, bc her kindness took our experience over the top. Stopped here on my way home from Tahoe and I'm so glad I did! The waitress was super friendly and welcoming from the moment I walked in. I had my dogs with me, and the patio was perfect, peaceful, relaxing, and it really feels like you're in the middle of nowhere (in the best way). The food was amazing! I started with the chicken strip appetizer, definitely not your typical chicken strips. They were delicious, crispy, and full of flavor. My top sirloin was cooked perfectly, tender, juicy, and just right. And I have to mention the German beer... yum! Served nice and cold in those big German mugs (or steins, whatever they're called), it totally hit the spot. Highly recommend this place, great food, great service, and a wonderful atmosphere. Staff here are wonderful and were very welcoming of our little girl, which is always a relief as a family. The restaurant itself has an awesome cozy vibe and unique decor, which goes great with its location beneath the pines in Camino. If you like Germanic cuisine then you will love it here. And even if you don't, you should still try it. The food we ordered was delicious and so more-ish. The goulash was creamy and flavorful with awesomely tender beef pieces and served with a spaetzle that was a perfect accompaniment. I chose the red cabbage which added a nice little tangy touch to the savory flavors. My wife said that the schnitzel she ordered was the best thing she had eaten in a long time, with a very tasty sauce/gravy. Ordering the side of potatoes AND dumplings was way too much food for two of us but it did provide a tasty snack the next day, and both were deliciously savory. The place is nice. A little log cabin 5 minutes from High Hill Ranch Apple Hill. We would have liked to come earlier than 3:30pm when they opened. Would have liked to come around 1pm for lunch, but they only open at 3:30pm. The food and service was good, only thing I wish is for more than three carrots for the side meal. Seems like previous people that ate here were given larger portions of the carrots. So what happened? Carrots are such an inexpensive side dish for a meal. Why only three carrots? Also the speatzle was amazing! I would have liked more of that on my plate as well! It was so good! The dumpling in gravy tasted more like a buttermilk milk biscuit in gravy. I was expecting three to four smaller sized dumplings such as Bavarian style potato dumpling with a homemade crouton in the center. Next time I'll try the potato pancakes as an appetizer. All I can say is please offer bigger hungry man proportions for the sides. The main cut of meat is a good size proportion. Just the sides are lacking in size. Good quality taste. But I would redo the recipe on the dumplings to make make them more like traditional Bavarian style potato dumplings with the crouton in the center. read more

Tender thin breaded pork cutlet,served with a thick white wine sauce, Spaetzl with similar if not the same sauce, red cabbage & a starter salad with blue cheese. Meat was tender enough to cut with a fork,sauce was mild but had a good flavor & consistency. The Spaetzl was my favorite, fresh egg noodles in short thick spaghetti like form with the white sauce. I could have had a full meal of this. Red cabbage was cooked with apples, sweet, slightly bitter OK. Salad was pretty standard fare. First experience here was over 10 years ago, I never forgot about that buffalo burger. So when my husband and I came up to Apple Hill today I was so excited to return here. At first I was apprehensive because it has since changed to a German menu but we decided to embrace it still. And we are so glad we did! The beef stroganoff over spaetzel was so good! After many years of visiting Apple Hill, I finally stopped at The Forester Pub and Grill. Their menu included some familiar German dishes which looked interesting and a nice option for a cool late fall visit. The restaurant was filling up quickly which was a good sign for this place on Carson Road in beautiful downtown Camino. Parking is decent, and they have a lot in the rear. The inside of the restaurant looks like your uncle's old cabin in a wonderful way. It has a warm and comfortable look with authentic wood stoves. I sat down and reviewed the large menu. There are lots of traditional American dishes here that seem to be popular, but I had my eye on the schnitzel. They have Jagerschnitzel and Wienerschnitzel. I chose the Wiener since the sauce seemed intriguing. A generous and loaded salad and a hot cup of coffee were quickly delivered to my table while they prepared my entree. The Wienerschnitzel was simply amazing. The meat was perfectly cooked with a nice thin breading and a sublime sauce. The spatzle were just heavenly - truly homemade and light as air even soaked in gravy. You can get red cabbage too which helps cut through the heavy fare. Towards the end, I finally squeezed the lemon on the schnitzel and was rewarded with a spectacular combination of flavors that made it easy to clean the plate. The location near all the farms in Apple Hill is more than enough reason to visit The Forester, but the amazing schnitzel is worth the drive. If the rest of the food is similar to the German options, I think this place is a true gem in the foothills. read more

The menu has been updated, if you had even been to St. Pauli Inn on Hwy 50 when it was in it's prime you will recognize the menu. Prices are reasonable and portion size is filling!! The small town of Camino, CA, is best known for its touristy apple farms that collectively is known as Apple Hill. But last month, I stopped on into Forester Pub and Grill in Camino. This place has awesome comfort food. Pretty large menu offering the likes of burgers, sandwiches, soups, speciality salads, ribeye, pot roast, meatloaf, chicken cordon blue, pork chops, shepherds pie, and the Forester favorites. The favorites are jagerschnitzel, Wienerschnitzel, Hungarian pork goulash, beef stroganoff, chicken n dumplings, and chicken in wine cream sauce. The place was cozy. The inside looks like a converted house. Clean, basic no frills place. No Instagram wall, no cute theme. Just great comfort food. Our waitress provided us top notch service. On the lazy late weekend afternoon we popped on in, there were lots of locals dining or grabbing drinks at the bar. I ordered the Hungarian pork goulash. It was fantastic. Ohhh that mushroom gravy was flavorful. The pork was fork tender. Simmered deliciousness. The spatzle was of course house-made. The purple cabbage had the perfect sour tanginess. The house garden side salad, that came with the entree, was fresh and had a variety of fixins. The blue cheese dressing had lots of stinky yummy chunks of blue cheese. Hubs ordered a cheeseburger. He liked it. I took a bite and it was good. Juicy 8 ounce patty made from Angus beef. The burger fixins were fresh and came served on the side. The fries were hunky steak fries. Our server was terrific. She was welcoming, knowledgeable about the menu items, and very efficient. She let us sit in the front room. We were the only guests in that room. I really love this place. We have been several times over the last 6 years, and I'll definitely be returning again. The last time we visited, we actually ordered food to go because we were staying in town overnight, and checked into our hotel about an hour before closing time. We phoned in the order and it was ready for pick up in no time. We ordered the pot roast, beef stroganoff, potato soup, salad, and some grilled cheese sandwiches for the kids. Everything was plentiful and well cooked. The only down side this time was that my spouse's pot roast seemed to have been cooked with twice the salt that it needed. He actually ended up rinsing it off before he could eat it. The potato soup was equally as salty. Everything else was find. We've had both the soup and pot roast in the past (years ago) and didn't have the same issue, so we're going to assume this was just an off night. Parking can be tough as this place is a local favorite, but the atmosphere is great and cozy, and the food really is great. I keep saying I'll try their burger or tacos, but I can't stray from the stroganoff. I also love the salad and how they include fresh beets as part of the main salad. Fresh-not pickled. Such a treat! If you are driving to Tahoe, or enjoying time at Apple Hill, I'd absolutely recommend stopping by here. It was fairly busy when we arrived, but we didn't have to wait too long for a booth. The menu is pretty extensive and it was hard to decide what to get. Burger? Tacos? Salad? Even the Forester Favorites had so many delicious sounding items and it was hard to choose. My hubby loves weinerschnitzel and I love Hungarian goulash so that's what we had. The goulash was amazing! The salads were okay - the tomatoes were a little softer than I like. Hubby liked his dish too. I got a side of veggies to go along with mine. The generous serving of goulash was enough for lunch the next day. We were there in late June. There's only one thing that was a problem and that was flies in the restaurant. I would suggest a bug zapper. We have one at home and those things work like magic. If I'm ever in the area again, I would most definitely come back. read more

I took my wife to The Forester restaurant yesterday, we spoke with our server and found out that they are the same owners of a restaurant that we loved years ago " St. Pauly's inn " which has been closed now for several years. The goulash soup delicious, and for dessert the apple strudel & German chocolate cake, if you can dare to choose was the end to a wonderful meal. After a day in Apple Hill we were hungry and didn't want to stand in the long lines at the orchards, this was the first place we stumbled upon. A quick glance on Yelp with 4 stars average rating we decided to give it a shot. The inside is what you'd expect from a pub, dark and outdated. The menu offered burgers, salads, tacos, schnitzels and some seafood platters. We all ordered entrees and got a side cup of clam chowder. This is where things took a turn. The clam chowder was good and we're shoveling it down but as I got to the end of my cup, there was a large dead fly. Appetite immediately ruined. We asked them to cancel our entree order and thankfully they did. They did still charge us for the one cup of fly chowder. For 6 sodas and 4 cups of soup was $28! Yikes. I didn't give one star only because the waitress was very nice and apologetic. Unfortunately for us, this place is a hard pass. read more

The dumpling with gravy was so good and different, light and fluffy! Not at all what I was expecting. Cool old school diner/pub vibes. The best was the service.
