Came here today with a friend! I love tea (+coffee) and have slowly been visiting some tea shops in the city. This tea place is in an area I wouldn't have expected but it works so well for the space! First thing to note: there's parking. YAY! So they have quite an extensive menu and my friend and I each did a tea flight. You pick four teas and they serve them to you from lightest to darkest. We also each grabbed scones which they warmed for us- they were delightful! To go we grabbed a 4 pack, 2 cans of the nitro chai and 2 cans of the strawberry sparkling tea. Both are on tap and I don't know how they can them but I'm just happy they do! My friend was raving about the nitro so I can't wait to try it. The gal who checked us out let us sample the sparkling strawberry and it was so refreshing! I was genuinely surprised how busy it was on a Sunday afternoon over in this section of town. The boyfriend and I were visiting Portland and decided to do a coffee tour with Third Wave Coffee Tours. This was the second stop during the tour. We had the chance to sample a variety of tea-infused kombucha! We had the chamomile flowers, strawberry honeybush, the nitro chai, and one of their seasonal herbal infusions called the meadow kombucha. All were truly delicious and we found the concept of tea-infused kombucha remarkable! The place was clean and neat. It was awesome to see all their tea selections, especially their featured tea latte, the mocktails, and teas on tap. They also sold resting chocolates which are woodblock chocolate scented with tea using the art of enfleurage. I did not see any vegan food options though which I found rather displeasing. read more

Who knew tea could be a science! When I stopped by this place for an afternoon pick me up, I didn't know what to expect. I was assuming a coffee shop only for teas. But it was so much more than that. From tea samplers to tote bags, there was a lot of merchandise to choose from (in addition to the teas on their menu). I tried the mango hibiscus iced tea and my friend had the rose dip tea. The servers time the tea making process exactly for the right flavor. The iced was pre made so no science involved there. I wasn't a big fan of the iced tea but my friend's rose tea was pretty good. After browsing on Yelp, i decided we were going to do a tea-tasting. we were able to walk in, choose our tea varietals and enjoy them together. I will say that this tasting is good for 2-3 people. Before he passed away, he planned this beautiful tasting room with a large glass window looking into the tea packing room. This is it. The staff is very knowledgeable about teas, the best in a front of house position in Portland. Of course, they know everything about each of the Smith teas. But they are also knowledgeable about tea worldwide, its character and history. Many of the Smith teas are blends. Each ingredient is chosen for a reason, and they can describe how it contributes to the flavor profile. They have displays of the teas in their loose form which they can explain and smelling jars for each tea. And they have the teas for sale in boxes and bags, loose and in teabags. There is no food, except some small crackers served with some of the teas. To taste, they have all of their teas to be brewed in pots, some latte-chai preparations with milk, and matcha drinks. The finely-finished concrete bar has a screen and drain for gong fu tea servings to come. There is a generosity with water, quickly discarded, to warm the cups and rinse the leaves in gong fu. Traditionally the waste water is drained into a tea board. The grate serves the same purpose. The space is comfortable and strikes a perfect balance between modern and traditional. There is a fireplace with four comfy chairs, a large padded tall back bench with a table in front of it by the roll up doors, which will be a great spot in perfect weather, a long table with about 20 seats, and the bar with stools, facing the packing room. The preparation is precise, with timers and even felt insulating coasters to insulate the tea pots from being cooled by the concrete counter. There is a tea laboratory room which may be open for special events, follow them on social media to learn about that. The SE industrial area has a fierce parking situation weekdays, despite being mostly limited to 2 hours without a permit. The Smith Tea Tasting Room continues the tradition of the Thurman Street Smith Tea Tasting Room, which remains open. The new room is the realization of the founder's dream. Smith Teas are not your average teas and their quality is on par with some excellent teas from Asia and much easier to consistently find. They offer teas in bags as well as loose leaf teas. Have you ever had an amazing tea and wondered where exactly did that tea come from or what type of blend was used? Well Smith Teamaker allows you to actually look up your tea up online and find out exactly what tea was used and where it is from. This is a very useful tool because you may notice a trend in your tea taste and also that you have a preference for teas you were not aware of. All you need to do is look up the tea batch number from the box at their website and all the info will appear. This is something that would be very difficult for a very large manufacturer who makes tea in huge batches. I highly recommend trying this out if you like their teas and want to learn a bit more about what you're consuming and where it came from. One of the complaints I have heard about Smith Teamaker teas is that they are more pricey than a lot of other teas. I guess this depends on the type of teas you're drinking. If you are drinking low quality teas you are going to pay less. You may like that tea but it's worth trying these tea blends because you will awaken new tastes of tea that you may not have known possible. I've taken friends here who were blown away by how good some of the teas here are. And having paid over hundred dollars for some teas from Several Asian countries I think the price for Smith Teas and what you get is definitely a bargain. The high quality is worth the price. I like this as a morning tea. The blend is smooth. - Kandy - this tea also has Dimbula and Uva from Sri Lanka but it also contains some Nuwara Eliya. A great Ceylon blend that's good for mornings but I like it during the day as well. - Portland Breakfast - this tea is a blend of Keemun, Assam and Pu-erh teas. It's not as strong as the Kandy or Brahmin tea blends. - 3 Finger Black - This tea is made from scented Pu-erh, Keemun and Zheng Shan black teas Which are scented in house with Bourbon vanilla bean and pecan wood. It also has cacao, ginger, pink rose, osmanthus flowers and lavender. - Jing Mai Noor - large leaf Jing Mai tea leaves come from a 400-year-old tea tree in the forests of Yunnan China! (WOW) It is scented in a French oak Pinot noir barrel. GREEN TEAS - Jasmine Silver Tips - one of my favourite teas. It uses young green tea from Fujian China which are harvested in May. This tea is steam-fired then placed with just-picked jasmine buds. - Rose City Genmaicha - similar to Japanese & Korean Genmaicha. It's a grassy green Mao Feng tea from China made with toasted rice with a hint of rose petals and manuka honey. - Fez - this tea uses Mao Feng tea from China which is harvested in the spring. They add spearmint from the Pacific Northwest and add a touch of Australian lemon myrtle. - Dragonwell - is also known as Long Jing tea. It comes from Hangzhou China by a spring where they say a dragon dwells. This tea is pan fired in a wok and flattened by hand. - Yin Hao Chardonnay - this tea is a blend of white and green teas. They use the Jasmine Yin Hao green tea and a white Yunnan tea. The tea is scented in an Chardonnay barrel and toasted cardamom, smoked lemongrass, orange peel, sage and pink peppercorns are added. OOLONG TEAS - Ali Shan - is produced in the late spring in the Ali Shan mountains of Taiwan. They use Gold Lily tea which is lightly oxidized. The taste is really pleasant with a soft buttery feel to it. - Ti Kwan Yin - uses full leaf Chinese oolong tea from Fujian Province. The tea uses a 36 step process and you can get up to 10 steepings! PU-ERH - Shu Cha - this is a fermented black tea from Feng Cheng in the Yunnan province of China. It is grown at an elevation of 5000 feet. Our last stop in Portland, we were pleased with the superb, friendly, and attentive staff at Steven Smith Teamaker! Arriving an hour after opening, the tea shop was empty of patrons but production room full of teamakers packaging the teas. Greeted by two teamakers (didn't catch their names, unfortunately), we were given a sample of two teas on tap: masala chai and strawberry honeybush. The masala chai had a nitro-based effervescence that was smooth and velvety. This full-bodied tea was aromatic, spicy, and delicious, and a splash of half and half added some creaminess. The strawberry honeybush was light, sweet, and fragrant of strawberries. I'm not a fan of carbonated drinks, but the CO2 from this tea had a nice and mild effervescence with a cool and crisp lingering mouthfeel. The latter was my favorite of the two on tap, so I bought a growlette (about 1 L) to take back home. But the main reason for our visit was the tea flight: 4 teas for $10. The flight is set up in a way where you sample teas from lightest to heaviest. You slurp a spoonful, rinse the spoon briefly with water, and move on to the next tea. Dried tea leaves are also provided for you to smell the floral, fruity, spicy, and/or aromatic notes in each. Smith also sells boxes of bagged teas, or you can make your own mix and match collection of six individual packets for $5.99 (great for yourself or for gifting). This tea room is naturally brightly-lit with simple, lovely decor. The fireplace and cozy sofa chairs make this place extra homey. Ended up buying their jasmine pearl tea (they have 2 jasmine, I got the more expensive one because it's way more flavourful). Can't really give any inputs on other aspects because we only got the tea flights along with some cold drinks. Place is nice for drinking tea though. TIP: They stop serving tea flights around 5:30pm! My boyfriend and I got here at about 5:20pm (40 mins prior to closing) before heading to dinner and wanted to try the tea flight. When we walked in, we saw lots of seating areas. It was a really quiet space, so perfect for relaxing. I was initially denied the flight at 5:20pm because there wasn't enough time, but was later told that they can do it for us. As our teas were being prepped, all I heard was the girl helping us complaining to her coworker very loudly about how people always come in so late and that the cut off is actually 5:30pm.. Major guilt trip sitting there listening to it all. Luckily the guy working was pretty chill and easy to talk to when checking out. We finally got to try our teas (honestly, they weren't too memorable) and the teas were lined from the lightest to the strongest. White petal was one of my favorites and rose city genmaicha was my least. Everything else was honestly not memorable to us. I wanted to try out more of their teas, but didn't want to get guilt tripped, so I bought a few of the assortment packs to take back home. Will I come back here for another tea flight? Ok, I was already a huge fan of Smith Teamaker's teas that I first enjoyed at a nice hotel in Seattle. Since then I've purchased them at different grocery stores as a treat to myself. I knew they had a tea room in Portland and I was so excited to finally have a true tea tasting experience! I opted for the tea and chocolate tasting and thoroughly enjoyed it. Service: 5 Leaf Quality: 4 Brewing Skill: 2 Knowledge of Tea: 2 Taste: 3 Average: 3.2, rounding down to 3. I'll start with what went well. The staff were incredibly hospitable and attentive. They were also incredibly detail-oriented, a great trait for teamakers. They also allowed for ample smelling and inspection of tea leaves, which made me interested in getting a flight. The oolongs seemed fragrant, and the bai mu dan had a white fuzz that suggested it was of exceptional quality. However, they do not match The Jasmine Pearl's willingness to offer sampling. I decided on Alishan, Baihao, Tie Guanyin, and Bai Mu Dan for my flight. The teamakers know enough to rinse the rolled oolongs so that they would be fragrant in the actual brew. Great! Now, the flights are brewed for a few minutes, which I found a bit peculiar, especially for oolongs. Indeed, this has adverse effects on the taste of the brew. First, the brews came out incredibly light. The better teas were Bai Mu Dan and Baihao. While a bit light, their higher notes came through well. Adequately fruity for both! However, the rolled oolongs were far too light, and the longer brew time led to a stewed taste. The Alishan was quite nice and had a sweet aftertaste. It was also very refreshing and smooth. The Tie Guanyin was terrible. It had a robust roast, but was coarse and dry. With the stewed taste on top of that, I could not bring myself to finish it. Overall, unless you don't have any clue about how to brew tea, skip the flight. Anybody who is familiar with the nuances of tea brewing will find more enjoyment buying a sample pack of teas and brewing it themselves. The seasonal special, the ho-ho-hoji-chai latte, was quite good though. I commend their creativity, but I do have a minor suggestion for future improvement. Using hojicha powder would give it more of a punch and highlight the intricacy and warm, roasty taste of hojicha. In the current recipe, the hojicha is overpowered by the spices. Overall, I would come back again for their specialty drinks and for loose-leaf teas, but not for a tasting flight. read more

I had the Darjeeling Crème Caramel tea latte, which is made with Bunglow tea, burnt caramel sauce and a pinch of Jacobsen's sea salt. It's like drinking a liquid caramel cup of tea. Wonderful! So, I ended up having to go on a public platform to leave this review bc this company reviews, reviews before they allow them on their site, which is pretty shady if you ask me. You'll see if you go to their website most all of their teas have 4-5 stars without really that many reviews, which isn't surprising when you find out that they personally filter out any review that doesn't shed the best light on their tea &/or their customer service . First off, I was super disappointed that I wasn't happy with my purchase bc my friend had gifted me some of their "Almond Apple Delight" for either Christmas or My birthday ( in March) & I absolutely loved it. I waited about 6-8 months after she had gifted it to me to try it, (November) and I don't know how long she had it before putting it in a glass jar to gift me either . However, once I did try it, I absolutely fell in love with this herbal tea & I went through it in short order. So of course I put in an order ASAP * I did wait for a couple of days to order to get a discount with Cyber Monday which saved me on shipping ( thank god I at least saved on that) I went ahead and bought 2 lbs so that I would be stocked for the holidays bc I knew how much I loved this herbal tea . My order worked out to be about 80$ after taxes, so not a cheap purchase by any means. When my order arrived I promptly opened it up, made a cup and was super disappointed that the only flavor that was present was cinnamon. I gave it a few more tries and knew that something had changed with their recipe & so I wrote in to talk to them about my concerns, disappointment and was essentially looking to make a return bc I'm not paying 40$ a lb for cinnamon tea that's not even organic. The response I got from them was that they've had this batch since August or so, they hadn't heard any complaints and they recommended that I just mix the tisan up more. So I did with the same result, CINNAMON was the only flavor coming through & there was nothing almond about it.... So, I decided to post a review advising clients that at min, they should buy a sample bc there was something up with this batch. I mean seriously, wouldn't you want a heads up just incase @ 40$ a lb? To top it off it's pretty disappointing when you reach out to the company about your experience & the company is in denial ( which I didn't outright say, but I def alluded to) & was another reason I wanted to give people a heads up. After I hit enter for my review, I was notified that my review had been submitted for review. Needless to say, they didn't approve my review. I'm a big tea drinker & customer and this was my very first personal experience with this company. As much as it pains me I won't be ordering this tea from them again. I ended up adding some of my own Marzipan rooibus & Lemon Soufflé rooibus to my "Amond Apple Delight" and was able to at least salvage their bad batch & get it closer to my original experienc with this herbal tea. So this goes out to would be knew customers and any returning customers , make sure you buy samples of their products before putting in large orders bc their quality control is BS, the company will gaslight you & you won't be able to warn other customers about your experience on their site with the tea being advertised. We came by here because we saw that they offer tea flights! wheeee! As tea fanatics, my husband and I had to come here to give them a try. The tea flight is about $11 and you get to sample 4 different teas. We chose to sample a white tea, green tea, oolong tea, and a black tea. The tea barista prepped it for us and set them in order from light to dark. Nice, but 2 blends of fruit tea that I bought had some kind of medicinal sub taste that I wasn't getting when I smelled them in store, so I assumed it might be the packaging, but three green tea blends that I got are quite good, although slightly overpriced.So I guess the verdict is, it's nice enough. But a bit on the pricey side and if you're a newcomer to loose-leaf tea looking for a selection, this is probably not the first place I'd recommend because it's daunting and not especially inviting. But for my purposes, it got the job done. Especially if you need loose-leaf tea and are staying in Jersey, because it's literally a block from the PATH. I can not say enough good things about this place! A friend and I were visiting from out of town when we stumbled upon this gem! We had wanted to do the factory tea tour but didn't realize you had to sign up ahead of time. Additionally we thought we were at the wrong location for the tour (they have a much smaller location on the other side of the river.) Lucky for us the lovely lady at the from desk assured us we were at the correct location and promptly signed us up for her next tour. While we waited we decided to try a tea flight. The flight is adorable and a total must if you ever visit! It comes with fun info cards about each tea, a cookie pallet cleanser, and some dried tea leaves from each tea you will be sampling. The tour was adorable and SO informational. We saw the teams involved in marketing, purchasing, tasting, storing, mixing, and so much more! It really gave the feeling of total transparency. Something you dont get a lot in companies today! At the end of the tour we got to try one more tea and have a little Q and A with one of the people responsible for creating all these delicious tea blends. My friend and I decided we couldn't resist and ordered ANOTHER tea flight. Both were delicious and so informational! When it was finally time to go we ordered a tea lattee and nitro tea to go. The experience was fantastic in every way! The staff was kind, the product is great, and the building is warm and full of smiling people. I cannot believe the reviews here, and seriously doubt their veracity. This place sucks, and here's why: - the woman with the bull's ring in her nose and black hair in her face needs to learn about hygiene and not touch customers' cups by the rim, after drinking from your own thermos and handling IT by the rim. - they don't let you steep your own tea (not even jasmine pearls, where the point is to see them unraveling) - they use tea bags...in a teapot... at a Teamakers'?... - the tea was weak and the employees argued that they couldn't let me steep it myself because they know the perfect steeping time - 3 minutes - and it's against the rules - finally convinced them it'd be okay to slip me another teaBAG, but only with a mini lecture that NEXT TIME, I would have to blah blah blah... - even with the tea stronger, it never tasted good. Tasteless Jasmine tea. - practically no food items left at 3pm on a Sunday - the macaron that was left had a non-food, plastic sort of aftertaste - maybe from the artificial ingredients it was made from - The neighborhood is so bad, we were followed from the tram stop by a guy shouting obscenities. It's approaching 90 degrees, which is right around my "aww hell nah" threshold for tolerable outdoor temperatures. Perfect for cooling down with a glass of Strawberry Honeybush. Smith has always been my go-to when I've wanted some relative peace and quiet during lunch hour on a weekday. The tasting room is perfect in that regard. Everything feels...therapeutic. Your nose will get a pleasant whiff of whatever the tea makers are packing that day. Visually, the space resembles a page out of a West Elm catalog...industrial, yet inviting. Heck, I'd be happy to sit here in robes if they added a sauna and turned it into a Smith Spa and Teamaker. I'm not a big tea guy, but they serve some mean lattes and carbonated Nitro tea. I'm a fan of the Nitro Chai with a splash of milk. What really stands out is the attentive staff. I've been impressed with their knowledge of the teas and how welcome they've made me feel, despite my lack of knowledge. There's a few other well-known tea places in Portland, but these folks always feel like I'm stopping by to catch up with some old friends. What a cool spot if you're interested in tea! We had a flight where you're able to pick your four options. The employee there was very friendly and available to assist too. $15 for a flight, which for 32 ounces I'd say is reasonable. There is a wide selection of teas. The tea flights let us try multiple teas which was nice and a good price - 4 teas (essentially a fully glass each) for $10 with a small cookie. We tried a total of 14 Smith teas during our time in Portland and our favorites per type were 1. Green tea: Fez - this was a refreshing blend with spearmint 2. White tea: White Petal - this was very flavorful and sweet 3. Black tea: Lord Bergamot - smooth Earl grey 4. Herbal: Chamomile - very smooth and calming Highly recommend getting a tea flight! Large enough to split 1 flight for 2 people also. This location was my preferred of the two. More room, cozier atmosphere, extremely Instagram friendly! Smith is founded by the owner of Tazo and Stash tea. This was on our coffee tour itinerary. Yes, you read that right, coffee. And it happened to be my favorite stop. Now, they don't serve coffee here. They do have a large assortment of tea leaves. We watched them package peppermint tea behind a glass wall. At the bar, the tea baristas mixed up some awesome samples. The honey bush strawberry nitro was like a light cream soda. And the malted match nitro was BOMB! Don't be disgusted by the sea foam green color. Creamy and smooth! Never had matcha like that before. We stocked up on some Lord Bergamot at a Whole Foods before we headed back home to LA.
