Visited the SE tasting room location. Bought 3 boxes of tea sachets, or tried to at least. There were four employees behind the counter. None of them greeted me, let alone acknowledged the fact that I stood at the register for over 10 minutes before someone rang me up. I should note that there was no one ahead of me, and, ahem, the place was not busy. Will not be going back due to the rude, poor customer service. read more

You have two options at Smith Teamaker: drive into this industrial district to grab a pricey bag of tea and go home to risk forgetting it's in your cabinet. Or (what I recommend) you can give yourself time to linger, forget what's outside the tea room's door, get a tea flight, and enjoy both the ambiance and the flavors in front of you. On my most recent visit, I chose the former option to grab the "Ice Cream Royale" flavor developed in partnership between Smith and Salt & Straw. It was fine, and it'll probably get drank at home, but I felt a yearning to sit down like the folks on the patio or at the tea bar and while away an hour or two. I've done that before and it's really a much more enjoyable experience! So make this a stop when you have time, bring a book maybe, and take it all in. read more

You know that moment when you forgot where you parked the car? I mean, you really have no clue where it is? That's what happened today, and that's how my friend and I discovered Smith Teamaker. We had no other plans and wanted to check it out, so in we went. When we entered the store, a strong tea aroma hit my senses immediately. The shop was clean, neat, and packed with tons of tea products. We walked toward the register and entered the line. We learned they create their tea blend/products at the location, which was neat. We ordered two tea flights and struggled to pick our top four choices. Me, being too lazy to decide, i ask the friendly staff member to surprise me with 2 of her favorites. My personal choices were "No. 6 Golden Oolong" and "No. 95 Chocolate Peppermint Pu-erh", and my surprise blends were "No. 72 White Pedal" and "No. 86 Dragonwell". I was delighted with her choices, because I got to sample an array of white, green, oolong and fermented tea categories. I liked all of the samples in my flight. They were all delicious and so different. The white petal opened my pallet to the white tea category. Prior to this tasting I thought all white tea tasted like water, but not this one. It had a pretty color and aroma, and was quite enjoyable with tons of antioxidants. The dragonwell was something I grew up with in Taiwan. It also had a great aroma, and the "first dry, then smooth" feeling on your tongue. The golden oolong had a rich favor and aroma, which reminded my friend of Bourbon. The chocolate peppermint Pu-ehr tea was exactly what I expected, and I think it would taste quite delicious with milk and sugar. It was a nice, sunny, fall day. We sat outside with our beautiful tea flights, sipping the tea away as multiple trains blasted their horns while passing by. Was it difficult to talk during the deafening sound? Yes! But how i see it, that sound was part of the experience too! My friend and I just giggled and sipped tea and let the trains do the talking. Overall, I'd recommend Smith Teamaker and their tea flights. Next time, I'm going to try their handcrafted drinks and the cookies that come with them. read more

With my travel companions not so much beer or coffee drinkers, a tea tasting seemed like a wonderful compromise and Smith Teamaker is definitely one of the better known tea franchises in the Portland area. From the mind who developed Tazo Teas for Starbucks, Steve Smith branched off later to bring a specialized high end tea line which is what we now enjoy at his tasting rooms/shops today. The best way to experience the Smith Teamaker during COVID is to order the tea flight which allows you to sample four teas for $13. With an extended list of a variety of teas of all types, the staff is quite knowledgable and will help with selecting the teas for the flight. The teas come with individual cards with information about the flavor profiles and special origins of each tea. They also come with a little cup with a little sample of the herbs and tea that was used to steep the sample. Each flight also comes with an almond biscuit to pair which was a nice little treat. Another great product they have are their drinks that they have on tap. We tried both their nitro chai and sparkling strawberry honeybush. Each with a slight fizz from the nitro process, but each with a strong refreshing flavor that was tempting to buy to take home! Parking spots are limited in front of the shop itself, but there is plenty of parking nearby. The service as above was great. My first visit here. When walking up, I noticed people sitting outside. The temps weren't that bad, so it made sense to me. Once inside, I walked straight ahead and checked out the tea display. Lots of special blend variety to choose from! A few more people came in, so I thought perhaps I should order a flight of teas. Then I glanced over at the inside tables and noticed they were all occupied, one with a solitary soul. Another larger table had card players playing Uno, with no tea or other refreshments in sight. The people that followed me seemed to be milling about, like they couldn't make up their minds. It was getting crowded, there was a couple stuck at the cash register for some reason. I love mushrooms :) I bought some of the Limited Release Breakfast in the Woods - released for Earth Day. This green tea is light and savory with added sweetness from the licorice and coconut. The symphony of flavors starts with the first sip, and continues into the after taste. I love this tea! I could drink this tea everyday. The guy that sold it to me, doesn't like mushrooms, so it's not his cup of tea. But if you love mushrooms, this tea is a must have! Stopped by Smith Teamaker around 5pm on a quiet Tuesday. The neighboring area seems a little sketch, but the store itself is very cute and clean. Smith Teamaker boasts a wonderful selection of teas, from traditional to modern blends. The staff was friendly and patient, as we had a hard time deciding what we want. I love this place. I got a flight of tea with Yunnan, Golden Light, and Lovers Leap. I regret eating a delicious Lovers Leap bar before trying Yunnan because it was so lightly flavored of melon. I appreciate that the staff subtly said "did you check the price list before deciding to purchase" because I would never expect 4oz of tea to cost $45. Funnily enough, golden light was just as delicious and I'm cheap, so I purchased a box of it instead. Also the wellness teas are organic, nothing else is. I am a stickler for that but I did share the lovers leap limited edition chocolate bar with my gfs and we loved it. My sister got granola and chai and she loved it. Indoor seating is limited and wait times can be long. Very few tables available outside. Worth the wait and delicious tea. Check out the website for discounts and additional purchases. Try the cafe before buying. I was sure I'd want the Meadow tea after reading about it online and was not overwhelming in love with it after sniffing it at the store. (Yes, there's sniff jars.) I wanted to try their teas on tap and their kombucha but unfortunately when I came, the machines were broken. I also originally came for a flight but didn't really feel like it so I got the blackberry jasmine iced tea lemonade which they donated $1 to an LGBTQ fund. Anyway, the drink was really pretty , light and refreshing. You could actually taste the blackberry tea along with the sweetness of the lemonade. The flavors blended together really well. I sat for a while in a cushion chair just enjoying my drink. The inside isn't that big but there's an outdoor patio too for nicer days (I came when it was raining). We found out by chance after having breakfast at Olympic Provisions just across the street and stepped in to take a look. I was really sold when I saw they offered "Tea Flights" on the menu and thought that was an awesome idea that I had never see before. My girlfriend and I ended up splitting a Tea + Chocolate flight which came with types of Woodblock Chocolate pieces that were essentially "steeped" in tea leaves for more than 24 hours or so. The chocolates that had the tea flavors were such a treat! It was super unique and it was cool because you got exposed to 6 types of tea through the one set. Came here with some friends on a Saturday afternoon while visiting Portland. We wanted to grab some tea for a pick me up and one of my friends wanted to purchase tea. Located in an industrial area, there's street parking and there's both indoor and outdoor seating. We did a little tea tasting and chose 4 teas. All from across the world. Pretty good tea and it has little cards explaining where the tea is from and what goes best with it. Nice for a cold day. I really enjoyed their Oolong teas. There are some good and snacks for purchase inside too. I think there's an area to make tea too if you plan ahead. I believe there are other locations around Portland. In the COVID era, Smith Teamaker hosted a Tea 101: virtual edition, that was so well put together even Uncle Iroh would approve. For $35 + ~$4 shipping, I received a beautifully packaged box that I hesitated to open because of how awesome it looked. Inside, there were not only 2 sachets of each of the 6 teas we sampled, but also a Smith Tea sampler box, instructions, tasting notes, tea trading cards, and even a branded pencil. The attention to detail was impeccable. Fast forward to the class itself, which was an awesome experience! The presenter, Claire (Clare?) along with a couple other staff put together a Zoom presentation all about tea. They thoroughly went through not only the different kinds of tea we were sampling and its origins/flavor profiles, but also gave background on everything tea-related, such as history, brewing, and processing. The presentation and tasting lasted about 1 hour and 15 minutes, with the last 15 minutes for questions asked in the chat box. I cannot stress how great of an experience this was. I consider this a gentle entry into the complex world of tea, and in this COVID era, it struck the right balance between trying something new without extending beyond my personal comfort level of drinking/eating out. I hope to visit this shop in person in the future, and in the meantime will be drinking and ordering more teas! read more

First time ever trying a "Tea Flight" and this place completely blew my mind. I think they may even have redefined tea drinking for me with the quality and stories behind their exceptional blends. I split a flight of four teas with a friend. We went for the Portland Breakfast, Rooibos, Fez, and Pheonix Oolong. Perhaps it came down to how meticulously the staffs here prepare the teas but each tea was outstanding! I could taste all the different flavor profiles described on the little cards that come with each tea; it was uttterly a whole new experience for me.I was tempted to buy a bunch of tea back after the experience. I visited Portland the beginning of July 2023 for a friend's birthday and we went to a tea party that was serving Smith Tea. We got the Black Lavender tea and to say I was obsessed with it would be an understatement. It is now my favorite tea in the world. I didn't have time to go to the location before I left, but I did go online and order the tea there. I did not get my order and a month after I ordered it, I got notified that my tea was returned to sender. I messaged the store and explained what happened. They were awesome and got back to me in a timely manner and I got my tea less than a week after confirming my shipping address! Reading other people's review makes me disappointed in my experience. We ordered the flight and asked if we can include the seasonals and was told no. But seeing clearly other flights pictured recently included the chocolate peppermint and ice cream one. :( We asked the cashier what he would recommend but was not really helpful at all and seemed like he didn't know much about tea or just didn't care to help. My favorite of the four was the jasmine tea. The aroma of it reels you in. Additionally, I wish they had more 2 oz options or even 1 oz. Tea on tap here is to die for! Super delicious and refreshing. I loved the sparkling strawberry honeybush! If it's your first time at Smith Teamaker, I would recommend going to this location (Washington St), rather than the other one (Thurman St) because this tasting room is much bigger. I got a tea flight because I've never gotten a flight of tea before and so I could try multiple teas. The teas were all super on point, and they arrange everything so nicely with card descriptions and leaves for you to smell. Comes with a tea cookie. They sell loose leaf teas here, so I would recommend getting the tea on tap here and getting leaves to brew at home yourself. read more

Such a gem of a place! Perfect for tea lovers. This place is nestled in an industrial part of town. Very unassuming. There are a couple of parking spaces right in front and I think I saw a few across the street as well. The space is not too big (or at least the cafe portion) with a couple tables inside and outside. They have a merchandise section and in the back you can see where they pack the tea. I got the flight and it's a great experience! You choose your teas from a list that you want to try. Don't be afraid to ask for suggestions! The folks working there are very informative. It says it serves 1-2, but I was told that it would be more like 2-3, and it was. They give you an information card, a small pot of the actual leaves that you can smell, and of course the tea. You scoop the tea out into cups for easier drinking and sharing. It's a great way to taste all kinds of teas. If you don't want to do a flight, they of course have options where you can get one cup, and they also have other stuff like lattes as well. The cafe is quiet, very different from your regular coffee shop feel. It's soothing, like you slipped into a slower time zone. I was pretty excited to try this place, but we were all pretty disappointed for it being a tea place. I got the London fog which was fine, but my boyfriend really did not enjoy his drink. He ordered a Matcha latte and we both tasted it and it just tasted like milk. We told the barista if they could add more matcha, because it just tasted like milk and she refused. I think it's one thing to make a bad drink but worse when they refused to adjust the drink. I think most well-established places will be more than happy to adjust your drink to the customers taste. Pretty disappointed that I recommended this place to my friends and my boyfriend and I would not recommend this place. So if you don't wanna pay almost 7 dollars for a cup of milk that I don't recommend this place. read more

Ordered the nitro London Fog and vanilla ice cream and also the Sparkling Strawberry Honeybush ice tea with vanilla ice cream, and as you might expect from those names: they were gooooood. $8 is a little steep, but I'm not aware of anywhere else that offers this treat. The line was long, but it moved. On a regular day, parking isn't too bad. Also went on a Sunday afternoon and there were only two other customers. Such a calm atmosphere, one of Portland's gems. Located in their packaging warehouse, this airy modern chic, West Elm-esque space was the perfect relaxing antidote to my jam-packed Portland foodventure weekend. Fun fact, Smith's is founded by the same person who founded Tazo and Stash. We started with the tea flight, where you could pick 4 teas from their extensive list to try out. The hot tea came out in bowls on a tray, where you were expected to use the spoon to pour the tea into your glass. There was a cup of water to wash your spoon after each tea tasting. There was even a gingerbread crisp for us to enjoy. For 2 people, it was a lot of tea and the best deal on the menu. We also tried the sparkling strawberry honeybush. It was refreshing and lightly sweetened. I don't usually care for honeybush tea but this drink was surprisingly delightful. On weekdays, you can see the packaging for the tea of the day going on behind the glass. The whole tea experience was wonderfully crafted- from the knowledgeable and friendly tea baristas and soothing ambiance to the care taken in brewing the tea. Came here for the collaboration with Salt & Straw and I was not disappointed. They ran out of the London Fog tea by the time I went down there, so I went with the chai. I definitely felt like it would've been good enough to drink even without the ice cream. There was a crisp, refreshing taste that felt just right on a rather hot Portland day. Drinks were $8.00 for 16 oz, so they weren't exactly cheap. However, this was a special event and a collab with one of the more expensive brands so I wasn't too put off. They also have an extensive collection of teas if you'd like to make them at home yourself, and some unique looking tea pots as well. Ordered: Nitro Chai Tea w/ Double Folded Vanilla ice cream- very good combination!
