I have visited their larger location many time and decided to finally check this one out. It has a cute little cafe vibe and looks like a great place to do some work or catch up with a friend. There was also a seating area outside with heaters that looked cozy. I tried the Meadow Oat drink which featured their meadow tea with steamed oat milk and maple syrup. It tasted just like a warm apple pie drink, perfect for a cold day. I have also had their black lavender fog latte before and it is one of the best London fog variations I have ever had, their black lavender tea is so tasty. Many friends have liked their chai, through it is way too heavy on cardamom for my personal taste. I feel bad about my initial review now. I just went back and had a really awesome experience. I was looking through the menu before I went and saw the Bai Mu Dan white tea. I like nutty flavors, so that's what I planned to order. When I got there and was placing my order, I told the lady that I wanted the Bai Mu Dan because I like those nutty flavors, but wasn't sure if I wanted it hot or iced, and asked how it would affect the flavor and what she'd recommend. I was really happy with the response. She explained that iced might make the strength of the flavor a bit more mild, but she also talked me through some of the other teas available that I might be interested in. In particular, she ended up recommending the Rose City Genmaicha, because that tea also has a nutty flavor and a strong taste, both of which I was looking for. I ordered it (iced), and it was awesome! In my original review I talked about how the flavor was pretty meh. Not too strong or distinguishable. And thus not something I would go out of my way for. This time it was different. There was a pretty strong nutty flavor, just like the lady said there would be. Which I really enjoyed! It was good. It was also pretty unique, at least to me, and I enjoy that novelty. If I wanted a nutty flavored tea, I can't think of another place I'd be able to go to get it. Honestly, the nuttiness was probably a bit too strong for me, so I plan on trying out that Bai Mu Dan at some point in the future. It's so cool that I have that the menu is comprehensive enough where I have that option available to me though. I also got the Smith Bowl and was pretty happy with it as well. The kale wasn't too bitter. Individual bites of kale I usually dislike because of the flavor and texture, but here it was more mild and was good. I loved that the kale was mixed with some sort of herbs and/or other more flavorful lettuces too. It provided a great contrast and additional flavors and textures. The apple slices were super thinly sliced, and I loved that sort of texture. The sweet potatoes weren't actually crispy, which is unfortunate, but the inside was good. Sometimes they come out starchy and bland, but that wasn't the case here. Overall I liked all of the different flavors and textures in The Smith Bowl. My two complains though are that the dressing was definitely too sweet for me, and that the tea flavor didn't really come through for me. That was mildly disappointing actually. This place is all about the tea, so it would have been cool for that flavor to shine through and be more prominent. When I ordered the tea and the bowl, the lady was nice enough to tell me that it basically comes with a free cookie if I make it a combo. I really appreciated that. So I got a cookie. Last time I got the salted white chocolate one and it was insanely good. I like to try new things though, so this time I got the triple chocolate one. It was good, but nothing special. The inside had a nice, chewy, slightly underdone texture. The chocolate flavor was there but not overpowering. The outside felt kinda stale to me though. And it wasn't served hot. I feel like cookies should always be served hot, lol. So much better. I still haven't had the chance to try too many of the teas that are available, but the fact that there are so many apparently world-class options for $4, I think it's really cool. read more

Almost as many options, flavors, brews, etc. Steven Smith teammaker has been around for a long time and I love that they now have a little cafe on 23rd. Decide to try this place over the weekend. A nice day to walk around, shop, maybe get a snack or drink too. We were lucky enough to find a parking spot only a block away! Parking in this area can get tough. The shop is designed to order your food and drinks at the counter and then you can take them to go or you can choose to sit at a table either inside or out along the sidewalk. We each ordered a drink. I was so excited to try the new number 76 and that's what I had mixed with the lemonade. My husband had the number 76 on its own. Both drinks are really great and came garnished with a big plump, juicy blackberry and mine also had a slice of lemon. For food, we ordered the baguette with meadow butter and jam. Sitting outside with a pot of tea and a cookie after walking a few miles in the park and rose garden just feels so civilized. Truly delightful. Smith Tea is consistently delicious and refined. If you order a pot, they steep it for you and serve only the prepared tea to you, so they control the strength. I get that this allows them to serve the tea as it should be enjoyed. I would have liked mine to be a bit stronger though. I had the sencha, by the way, which is a crisp, slightly earthy note tea. It was delicious! The chocolate cookie is perfectly on the edge of undersweetened which makes it a nice pairing with a hot cuppa. Nice little teashop in the Alphabet District. If you're out shopping this will be a great place to sit down and rest your feet. They have maybe four 2-tops along the wall and a handful of bar seats at the window, as well as a parklet outside. We were the last to arrive in a rush so I had a few moments to look at the menu while others were being served. I gather this is a newer location, I just wanted to visit any of their stores after trying some Smith teas at a cafe in Santa Barbara, CA. This one's trendy with high ceilings and their teaware is pretty cute. I considered a flight but ended up ordering a pot of second flush darjeeling and avocado toast. I appreciated that they brewed the tea and handled everything before bringing it over, removing the guesswork and potential of over-steeping it myself. It seems like the staff were all trained to work with all of the teas, which is what you want to see. Maybe that's a low bar but man, I've seen some things! The darjeeling was delicious, nice and light but with some depth too. The avocado toast was pretty good - fresh bread and avocado, with some cucumber on top. The seasoning mix they used made it a little more interesting but I would've preferred something more salty/savory -- it had some mint in there which kinda overpowered it and made you feel like you'd just cleared your palate rather than enjoying the flavor of the bite. Definitely a nice spot to stop in for a drink with a friend. The girls beside us got a big cookie which looked amazing. Worth a visit. read more

Smith Teamaker is a wonderful addition to 23rd! We were ecstatic to try the avocado toast, hot black lavender fog, and the blackberry jasmine lemonade. The avocado toast is comprised of spelt bread, cucumber, arugula, and "everything" spices. We also added the white petal cheese that is made from the white petal tea, and it was great touch and so delicious. The blackberry jasmine lemonade is exactly how its named, aesthetically pleasing, and refreshing! I got the Ice Cream Royale Latte based on the recommendations of another reviewer and they were right; it was so good. I would definitely get that latte again. I also got the Forager's Noodles and wow, that soup bowl was jam packed- squash, shiitake mushrooms, mint, basil, other greens (lol, idk exactly what they are but they were so good), bok choy, buckwheat noodles -so delicious- and the broth. I think the description said it was a smoked tea based broth; so so so good. It made for a very delicious bowl. Also, the broth has some chili oil and I think there were some slices of jalapeños(?) I'm not exactly sure, but fearing that they were jalapeños, I took them off (not a spicy food lover). That being said, I did find there to be a little heat, but I still thought it was great. We've had Smith Tea at various hotels and locations in the local area, so we opted to make a pilgrimage to their store while in Portland. The shop is located on a fun street with lots to offer. Inside we received kind service from the staff, who were happy to help orient us to the menu and extensive tea offerings. We grabbed a pot of tea and shared one of their lunch sandwiches. The sandwich was really unique - it was a vegetarian vegetable stacker with lots of yummy components enhanced with their teas.
