We miss our local food. We arrived into Jacksonville later than expected. This was the first place we came to....boy after you haven't eaten our food in a while you really crave it. This place since it open it has been kept clean and the southern hospitality shows loud and clear something that is none existing in Huntington Beach, California. The food is always delicious and the service usually good but today I went in and they rung me up for the wrong meal ( not a big deal as I believe they had issues with their headset at the time) and when I got to the window I changed it but then asked about the price difference because I believed that the item I wanted was cheaper than what I had paid for. This is a must do stop for me and my family when we're in NC. The bar-b-q is scrumptious as well as their hush puppies and iced tea. This is a chain restaurant and my first time at this location but the food was just as good. I usually order the BBQ platter that comes with a side of Cole slaw and hush puppies. If I am not too hungry I will just order a BBQ sandwich. The food is affordable and staff are very friendly. The establishment is always clean and accommodating. My family and I were in Jacksonville to visit our Marine. We are from Jersey and decided to try southern food so ate at Smithfields on Saturday and we are fans. They have the best friex chicken I've ever eaten, and the BBQ is awesome as well. Before we left for home, we went back for takeout for our journey home. The pint sized manager named Murphy is a fireball that runs that restaurant like a well oiled machine. She lead employees, talked to customers, took orders, and tidied the dining room all at the same time. When Murphy heard that we were taking food on a trip, she packed our order in ice. This place is amazing. I was able to stop in here on a recent trip from NY to Jacksonville. The ordering process is simple. The food was amazing. I had the chicken and pulled pork plate which came with 2 pieces of fried chicken, pulled pork , hush puppies and 2 sides. The fried chicken was delicious. Jury is still out for me. Chicken was as good as it's always been. The pulled pork sandwich had several "chunks" of very tough meat that I could not chew and had to discard. Yumm yum yumm. Ive never had North Carolina BBQ before but I was pleasantly surprised how delicious everything was. I ordered the White Meat Combo with Sweet Tea. It came with shredded dark meat, two pieces of fried chicken, hush puppies and the pork stew. The food came out almost immediately from our gracious cashiers who were friendly and attentive. The bbq is vinegar based, giving the chicken a tart tang and kick. The fried chicken was perfectly breaded and fried, coming out tender and moist. The stew was one of my favorites and I would gladly have an entire bowl of it. You could definitely taste the vinegar in the pork but it worked so well with the rest of the stew. Cant forget the hush puppies that were also great. Loved the sweet tea and the cashiers came by multiple times to see if we wanted a refill, love that they do that! Smithfield's is one of my favorite places for fried chicken. The chicken is very crispy outside and juicy inside. I get the dark platter with baked beans, potato salad and hush puppies. The bbq is shredded meat with vinegar sauce, personally I'm not a fan of this kind of bbq. The seafood options are average. The restaurant is always bright and clean. Orders are filled very quickly, much faster than most fried chicken places. Service is very friendly, they greet you when you enter even before you get to the front of the line! I order takeout inside even though there's a drive thru, and they usually bring my order to the table I'm waiting at instead of just calling out numbers. read more

I was not impressed with the food at all, the pulled pork had very little flavor and was dry. I much prefer Cook-out's version - cheaper and more flavor. I was heartbroken when I got to Jacksonville and found that the Smithfield's on Western had been closed down. I used to eat at this place religiously (plus Smithfields located all over NC) and was looking forward to getting back. My daughter and I ended up eating at Cook Out, and I mentioned my disappointment to the cashier. She informed me that they had moved to Gum Branch... Yay! Needless to say, I made a few trips over that way during my visit. The first stop was good and the quality of the food was that of what I had come to expect from the namesake over the last 14 years. I got, as always, the large pulled pork platter with beans & fries, sweet tea and a side of banana pudding. It was heavenly. But then on my next 2 visits the quality was - I don't want to say sub-par, because it was still edible, but - not up to its usual standards (and because I hold Smithfield in such high regard, it almost *seemed* sub-par). Hopefully those 2nd & 3rd plates were just bad, isolated incidents. Though I have to wonder if this somewhat-out-of-the-way location played a part in that. Everything was great and the hushpuppies were delicious. The pork didn't have any type of barbecue sauce on it, but had a really good vinegar based sauce on it.
