We hadn't been in a few years because the chicken coating was extremely salty the last couple times. Well we decided to give it a shot again last week and it was no longer salty. We both had the two piece dark fried chicken dinner with baked beans and fries, with no salt. It also comes with several hush puppies. Everything was delicious. The chicken was do good and the baked beans are so good with some shreded BBQ pork in it. The fries could have been crisper. We returned again yesterday, same choices except this time my spouse got the potato salad instead of fries, which I tasted. IMO it's quite sweet. This time my fries were a little crisper. The bush puppies were a little too whereas last visit they were perfect. The customer service is wonderful. The gentleman who took our order and delivered our food couldn't be nicer. I dined in at this Smithfield's and was greeted promptly. I usually get fried chicken here, but had heard they have a different sauce for the bbq so decided to give it a try. The people were fast, friendly and the food came out quickly. The restaurant is large so there's plenty of space and seating choices. I tried the new sauce which I requested and came in two little cups. It was different than the one on the table, but still was not anything like the sauce I wanted. I ate some of the potato salad and coleslaw and took the rest home. With a good sauce added it was ok. Lesson learned, I will continue to get the chicken. Great chicken, good service, good selection of food. I have never had the brunswick stew before a few years back, but now anytime that I walk into the Smithfield's, I make sure I get at least a pint of it. This makes for a great next day snack, because you gotta get to the crispy fried chicken and hush puppies while they are fresh. This is like a nicer KFC or Popeyes, as these always seem hectic and come with a sense of urgency and anxiety. Smithfield is nice and chill, clean, and the people are very nice. I guess they just have different corporate images and workplace identities. Anyway, i go to the one in off Davis near the Walmart. I have to admit that I was pretty disappointed by my experience here. First, ordering online was easy, and I was impressed by the price of the food. I ended up ordering the regular BBQ plate for myself, while my wife got a chicken plate. I kind of wish that there were more healthy side options, like green beans or something, but not the biggest deal. The food was prepared on-time and was easy to pick up at the restaurant. I brought it home and we dug in and... it was not great! The hushpuppies were kind of stale, the vinegar sauce wasn't super tasty, and the BBQ was definitely meh. It was affordable, but it didn't seem worth it to me. I would definitely go to another NC BBQ joint before coming back here. read more

As a North Carolinian, BBQ (pulled pork specifically) is practically in my blood. I've been to some really good BBQ places, but when I don't feel like making the trek to the top of the line spots, I'll come to Smithfield's. While the food here brings me comfort, it's certainly not the highest tier of BBQ. And that's okay! I come to Smithfield's when I want a cheap and quick option. If you're looking for traditional North Carolina pulled pork, I think you would find that Smithfield's tries to recreate this iconic food, with their own twists. While the pork does take on the vinegary flavor, it, along with many other menu items, is a lot sweeter than the traditional fare. The potato salad and coleslaw are on the sweeter side too. The pork itself isn't all that smoky, but tastes okay. There are definitely items I prefer over the BBQ on a given day. Their fried baby shrimp are consistently delicious, and their fried chicken is quite moist. My favorite thing here are their hush puppies. They do such a great job with them, they are always fried perfect and not too sweet. It's not doughy or dense, this is one of the few instances where I love the hush puppies, as they normally just sit in my stomach and make me full, yet unsatisfied. Another one of my favorite things about Smithfield's is their hospitality. I think this restaurant emphasizes the idea of "Southern Hospitality", and I think it's great! The world needs more of that for sure. With friendly service and next level hush puppies, I think I will continue to make Smithfield's my quick BBQ option. read more

I have loved Smithfield's for decades. I still love Smithfield's. But the last six months they have changed their chicken portions and appear to be double breading to hide the fact they have less chicken. Inflation land is hard. Times are tough for a lot of restaurants. I am not a picky person. But the chicken lately has been laughable. Hopefully they self correct and go back to how it's been. I'll keep coming back because the red sauce is where it's at, but Smithfield's, please fix the chicken. If you've never been to Smithfield's, you need to get red sauce and some chicken and some hush puppies. It was a rainy Sunday around 11:30 am I went in Smithfield's - the place was clean and spacious. At the counter the young man was pleasant. I ordered a pound of BBQ to go. Only took a couple of minutes as I was waiting I asked if they had Gluten Free rolls- he said yes and he would put them in the bag. I got the bag and there were no rolls- no problem- I went back up to the counter and paid for the 2 gf rolls ($1.71) I was handed them- I looked in the bag and asked if they were Gluten Free and the other man said No they don't carry Gluten Free- luckily I was able to return them. We arrived at the restaurant 35 minutes before closing. We were the only customers inside. An employee acknowledged us but was waiting on the drive through. When the manager arrived to take our order-10 minutes after we arrived- he was very rude as he took our order and told us, "we close in 25 minutes." The food arrived quickly but was clearly what was left over from the evening . The BBQ wasn't chopped - it arrived in large chunks. The shrimp were not bad but the serving size was about 75% what I have received at other Smithfield locations. We were treated as a burden and not valued customers. I also don't recall every having had hush puppies, but they were very tasty. I didn't love the coleslaw and potato salad, which were both watery. Needed lunch on the run and wanted something fast. Had never been here so decided to give it a try. I am not the biggest fast food person I usually avoid them. It was good, the chicken was crispy and I love the spicy vinegar for the fries. The store was clean, workers polite and courteous. I love the face they have a sink where you can wash your hands. I flew out of Raleigh on October 12 , 2021 and I had to make one more stop at Smithfield's before I went back to Las Vegas . I make it back to the Carolinas about every 3 years to vacation and visit family and friends . I am a fan of the Fried Chicken and of course the Carolina Pulled Pork BBQ . In Vegas we have a lot of BBQ places , but most are Texas or Memphis Style . Only 2 places make a Carolina Vinegar Sauce for the Pulled Pork . Of course only one of them is any good . They make great Brisket and Hot Links in Vegas though . I first had Smithfield's in Laurinburg , North Carolina in September of 2019 and loved the Pulled Pork Sandwich . I noticed some ladies eating some delicious looking fried chicken , so I came back the next night for dinner and flipped over the fried chicken . Again , Vegas ain't got nothing on your fried chicken ! I bragged about it when I got back to work and seeing my friends and of course posted pictures on Facebook and Instagram . I went to 5 places for Pulled Pork that 2 weeks in NC and SC and yours was my favorite just a little bit above Rodney Scott's BBQ in Hemmingway . So , before I got on the plane I had a Pulled Pork Sandwich with Coleslaw on it , Hush Puppies , and Sweet Tea . It was so good and the place was clean and the employees were nice . This was my first time trying Smithfield's BBQ, and it was actually pretty good...especially being suited as a "fast food" style chain establishment. I went through drive thru, with no expectations of the menu, but knew I had to be quick, considering there were 2 vehicles behind me in line. I ordered 2 large BBQ plates blind, unbeknownst what the included protein would be (brisket, burnt ends, chop, pulled pork) bc the menu did not specify. Within 6 mins, my son and I had 2 large BBQ plates and a chicken tender snack meal in our Jeep, ready to roll. Once we got home and ate our meals, we all 3 enjoyed what was offered. Is it blue ribbon, award-winning BBQ? C'mon, now, you already know that answer. But for BBQ on the fly, this place is good. Service was fine. The value is there, and they have a system in place where you won't wait too long for decent BBQ. As far as their 2 sauce choices are concerned...the red sauce was good, but I couldn't stand the vinegar sauce. Might as well use pure apple cider vinegar and that's nasty. Would I eat here again? I have to start by acknowledging the team working on 12/10. Came in with my kids after school, we were the only ones dinning in. The staff was so friendly, they were engaging and were so kind. Jeremy came to our table to ensure we didn't need refills and check on our dinning experience. My kids were so impressed with his attentiveness:) The staff interacted as a team and it was awesome to see. Inside dining is open, the tables are pushed against the walls and 6ft is enforced. I had been to Smithfield's many times for their pork BBQ sandwich. I bought 2 sandwiches for my family last night, and they were absolutely horrible. Previously the pulled pork sandwich was delicious. You could see how the pork was "pulled" by having nice chunks of meat, and an ample amount of coleslaw on top. Last evening's sandwiches were terrible; it's as if the pork was put in a food processor. It had the consistency of mush and tasted terrible. There was only a tiny amount of coleslaw on top of the pork. The sandwich was cold, where normally in the past, it was warm. This was such a disappointing experience, and unless things improve, I will not be returning. read more

A nice place to get a quick dinner if you like NC BBQ (vinegar-based). Not exactly appropriate for date night unless that's your kinda thing, but works for an occasional quick fast-food dinner. I've only had the BBQ, slaw, and hush puppies. It reminds me of an old restaurant in a small NC town where I used to eat when a kid. I had to ask for some Bar B W sauce because it didn't seem to have any on the meat. The food was warm but not hot. The best part Abbott this pLace was Chris our server. Very polite and friendly younge man. The place had a nice southern atmosphere and was pretty clean. The ice tea and hush puppies were the hit of the meal. I'll stick to Sonny' Bar B Q. One of my FAVORITE places to go when we have a taste some chicken and bbq. This location is simple to find. I only do drive thru, regarding what I saw, everyone had on masks to comply with COVID19 protocol. The food was good overall, the fried chicken this time had a taste of oil grease. It wasn't disgusting, it was more like hm...I think they need to change that grease! Believe me I have had chicken in old grease that made you sick to the stomach with a sniff! The BBQ can sometimes be really hot or mild, depending on the day. I like it either way, but wanted to make note for someone who might be very sensitive to spice. The chicken portions were small which ended up being a good thing as the meat did not taste fresh and I ended up throwing it out. Finally went to this place and wish I would have gone years ago. I mean, the popcorn shrimp was SO good!!! I like it better than any of the shrimp I've had around here. The hushpuppies had a nice flavor and I really enjoyed them as well. Sweet tea was good also. One drawback...the potato salad was pretty disappointing because it was way too sweet. However that didn't change my rating because the staff/manager had great customer service, so that made up for the potato salad. I came here for a quick bite of Eastern style barbecue and this place didn't disappoint. The restaurant had a few tables spread out for dine in due to Covid. I ended up ordering a combination plate of barbecue and fried chicken, both which were decent. The slaw and potato salad were pretty delicious, although I've had better hush puppies elsewhere. BBQ Chicken is GOOD but admittedly I had to develop a taste for Smithfield''s BBQ. Being from Chicago when I order BBQ, the meal is spare ribs and char-grilled. After living here in Durham for 7 years, I have succumb to NC BBQ. So -? My tastebuds now cast a vote for the tomato-based dripping BBQ chicken. The sauce is delicious with a hint of spicy blended with a pinch of redpepper flakes. It's not a traditional BBQ sauce but I have grown to love it - finally! The amazing hush puppies are a great add to any Smithfield meal. And lastly, Smithfield's Brunswick Stew is the BEST! I often purchase Brunswick stew and place in the freezer.
