Smith's bakery is a Bakersfield institution. Their pink champagne cakes were a wonderful treat when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's and they still taste exactly the same. Love their brownies and all of the thumbprint cookies by my all-time favorite are the frosted sugar cookies. Love the smiley faces and all of the holiday cookies. Located inside a gas station (Brookside Market & Deli) on the corner of Coffee and Hageman. It is not my favorite Smith's Bakery location, but it is the closest to home. Some of my favorites at Smith's are the cake donuts (any flavor), beehive (I believe that is the name), cheese danish, and champagne cake. Most of the time, I'll see something in their display case that I want. Wish they had more selections sometimes, but it is probably a good thing for my waistline that they do not. Dont bother using this location. I made an order a week in advance and expressed my concern of picking them up on the morning I needed them and she assured me that there wouldn't be a problem picking them up at 8am. Show up at 8am, guess what, no cookies. My order was lost and would need to be faxed back in. Wouldn't be available until 10am.......for the class that ends at 1030am. read more

Don't come to this location. Go anywhere but here!!! The baked goods are great but the employees here are very rude, insulting, and condescending. I've come several times and always the same. Short tempered, no patience, and even insults the elderly if they get confused. NO EXCUSE FOR SUCH HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! Ever! Customers come back to places like this over and over again when you treat them right. Baked goods are great but not worth that. Inside the Brookside, this Smith's is convenient and carries the same awesome cookies as the other Smith's bakeries (albeit less selection). Craving thumbprints at 10am on a weekday I discovered that a rather plump woman had purchased the last dozen. I almost thought about buying them from her, but then I might actually look like a have a "problem". With that said, please stock with more thumbprints! read more

This bakery was a wonderful part of my childhood and I raised my children with treats from Smith's also, but they have gone down hill completely. I placed a very specific order for a very specific occasion and when I picked up the cake it had PLASTIC flowers on it. Here it is Valentine's Day 2011 up in Sacramento and I am happy and full from munching on red heart cookies and thumbprints from Smith's. Both my mother and bf know how much I love these cookies and sent some up to me this past weekend! I feel so loved! The red cinnamon frosting is bomb. Sometimes, the cookies hurt my teeth a bit (and this may be a sign for me to hit up a dentist) but that's all part of the fun. Side note: I've heard one lady specifically order just frosting from them. I may be ordering the cinnamon frosting to slather on most of my food. This reminds me of the one scene from 'Sex and the City' where Miranda says, "You may need this info when checking me in to the Betty Crocker clinic." Yes, I know I have a problem. The bakery makes donuts and cakes too. But I am just a cookie monster! My favs are the hearts, rainbows, pigs, alligators, and any thumbprint that is not chocolate flavored. One cookie I despise is the smiley face one. The chocolate eyeballs are gross and I always pick them off. Called Bakery on Thursday, April 8th, 2021 no one answered for 3HOURS!!! finally someone picked up and told me they were not taking orders for the weekend. I had prepaid for a cake And wanted a Pink Champagne cake no special decorations or writing just solid cake and was told no, even though I had already pre paid for a cake at the Bakery on Union. Commented on FB was told by staff 3 days later, that I needed to create an order more than a day in advanced was because of "the holidays" and the "pandemic." I scoured their website, there is no specifications of when to order cakes or how the Pandemic has effected the ordering process I've always done it the day before during the Pandemic and before and had no problem and was very happy. What holidays? Easter was the previous Sunday, April 4rth in this year 2021. I just want my money back now. I doubt I'll get it. Beyond disappointed! It was the easily worst birthday of my life and this was the only thing this sad lonely chubby girl was looking forward to and didn't get it. read more

Their Pink Champagne Cake is my absolute favorite! I order it for any birthday or special occasion and always ask for extra custard. I don't really know how their other products taste but compared to anywhere else their Pink Champagne is the best. read more

I had a party and the birthday person asked for German Chocolate Cake. I ordered a10 in round and it was sloppy and uneventful. The sides were not iced and the cake showed. Maybe this is how its supposed to be but it looked like it was literally thrown together. The writing on the top was red because the sales lady suggested red and it was blobby and sloppy looking. I didn't have time to complain because there's no use in complaining when you have a party the same day. I figured take it or leave it and since I needed a cake I took it. I've always expected Smiths to be high quality but looks like that's changed. Bye the way I paid $82.50 for this cake. I won't be going to Smith's again for cake because Costco is at least predictable and reasonably priced. I realize nuts have gone up but all the cake was was 3-10 in. rounds with nut and glaze icing in the middle and on top (none on the sides) and a sloppy red happy birthday on top. whatever. bye bye. Ordered a cake from here several days in advance. Requested to pick it up at noon on Saturday and was told it would be no problem. Got there just after 12:30 and it wasn't there. Didn't get there until 2. Another woman was there for cupcakes she was supposed to get at 10am and they also didn't get there until 2pm. Seems the bakery got a little greedy and took too many orders. The cake was still delicious. Can't say this will deter me from going back, but I'll definitely not expect them to be on time. read more

Ok I have not been living here long and I had a craving for something sweet and my friend recommended this place. She took me there and bought a few smiley face cookies. When I first looked at the cookies I thought to myself is she joking!? A yellow frosted cookie with a smiley face. I thought she bought those just for my kids but she said they were the best cookies she's ever had and I shouldn't knock it till I try it. So reluctantly I did, and all I have to say is OMG I love these cookies!!! At first I didn't know what to expect from the cheesy yellow frosting with the corny chocolate smile but man is it good!!! If I could eat these everyday and not become diabetic or gain weight I would have like 3 or 4 of them everyday that's how good they are. These cookies are like a cross between a shortbread cookie and dense pound cake, the cookies are very thick. The cookie itself is not sweet but the frosting is sweet but not overly sweet just the right touch and the smiley face is just the right amount of chocolate. Whenever, I know that we will be going back home to LA to visit our family I always stop by and pick up some cookies so I could get my "fix" since they don't have cookies like these in LA.
