Annually, we have a Smith's Champagne cake for a family exclusive special occasion. For YEARS we've done this, without problems. This year's cake was the definite exception and game changer, as it was incorrectly personalized (icing inscription) - okay, human error, understandable, but it was the attitude and tone given upon pickup and disclosure of the error that really soured our good faith. Immediately there was a dismissive, sorry not sorry, "there's nothing I can do because I can't mix the icing to redo it" . THAT raised so many questions and implications but maturity moves beyond that and moreso into wanting to RESOLVE this. Another employee stepped in and was apologetic in tone but could not fix the cake. We were offered cookies in consolation. Smiths cookies are great but it was THE messed up CAKE that was to be presented to friends and family, at an event, a few hours later - NOT FIVE COOKIES. Loss of good faith. Again, it's not so much about the mistake as it was the dismissive tone and downplaying. read more

I would not waste your time preordering. We preordered because we were told there was a separate line for preorders and it goes pretty quick..... Well you're just going to wait in the same long line with everyone else who want to just browse around. Showed up this morning and we had to wait in 34 degree weather while the workers are letting people wander around moving extremely slow. The "preorder" table is just a pushed up table against the door to keep people from coming in. No one there. No signage directing you. Don't waste your time. Grandma's favorite! It's all about the berry pie. Well, last time I picked up some cookies too. Life is to short to worry about diabetes or sugar. Well the area (parking lot) is crusty but no one bothers you. Service is acceptable but frankly, grandma, knows everyone so we let her cut the deals. We just eat the Berry pie. Soon it will be thirty years I was personally introduced to Smith's Pies. I highly suggest to try them because if we run out of time to make pies at home. Danishes are amazing. Just picked up a Beehive, Envelope and apricot danish for work and they were all so good. Also they have the best Champagne cakes. Service is always helpful and friendly. SO charming and historic and wonderful. Several friends tipped us off to this place when visiting Bakersfield and it still felt like a find! What a cute little place overstuffed with characters. Passing through Bakersfield for a couple days to visit family, I saw this bakery close to their home and decided to give them a try. With Covid restrictions, they allow three people in at a time and require masks. They had donuts, croissants, pies, and cookies. I can't say much for their other pastries, as I came in craving holiday cookies just like my childhood, Christmas themed sugar cookies. The sugar cookies at Smith's did not disappoint! They had a few different holiday options to choose from and some regular ones too. I was told that they are all flavored the same, just different designs. So I opted for five, three Christmas wreaths, a Rudolph Christmas pig, and a Santa Claus. These cookies were really yummy, with a good amount of frosting and they were super soft. Definitely satisfied my sweet tooth. Friendly and efficient service. If I'm ever back in town, I wouldn't mind trying some of their other offerings on display. read more

I have been going to Smith's for a long time, however my first check in. You can never go wrong with any choice of cookie, donut, cup cake or pastry. Normally the staff is very friendly and eager to help. They have this one young lady, maybe in her early 20's. She is quite rude and VERY unfriendly. She seems to hate her job in this customer service based business. It was really noticeable today. Smith's is having a sale on the cookies. Buy two dozen and get the third for a penny. When a customer would ask her a question she would have the look of " are you serious!" Wow. I have personally been "helped" by her and she is the same every time. 5 stars for product, 2 stars for customer service. As a Bakersfield native I've bought birthday cakes, special occasion cakes, numerous cookies, donuts, punch, and more for over 50 years. Today was an absolute mess and embarrassment. While standing in line outside, properly distanced and wearing a mask, the door opened and a women said you can come in. As I stepped in a large women behind the counter yelled "sir only three customers allowed inside". I would have stepped back outside but I remembered that there were four customers inside a few minutes ago and no one was asked to step out. I questioned why the were four earlier and before I could finish my sentence she yelled to me over and over. The woman, who had let me in said "I'm sorry I let him in". The employee just kept yelling at me. I did go back out to wait. Those outside asked why I had to come back and as I explained, the woman behind me said that there were four inside a few minutes prior to me. We also noticed that one of the employees had a face shield but no mask which is not proper protection nor following the signage posted outside. Now I'm in a quandary, as much as I love Smith's products I really don't want to go back for future special orders. It will be a long time before I set foot in there again. read more

After reading all the reviews on Yelp I have been coming here now from Stockton since 2011 because this bakery makes good quality product with top quality ingredients and these types of bakeries have not been in Stockton for decades.
