So sad. I walked in at 4:50pm. I purchased a healthy amount of cookies. Which I must say they had A LOT still left. I kindly asked to sample a broken cookie and two cookies I had never had before WHICH I did end up purchasing. And then I left after paying. And no, I didn't eagle eye her boxing up my order. I get in my car--driving away I reach into the box to grab a chocolate thumb drop and she had switched her favorite that I had ordered some of for the one I WAS ADAMANT NOT WANTING ANY OF!? What the heck!! Really!? I had to turn around in traffic. Go all the way back. Thankfully after literally BANGING on the locked glass door AFTER the OTHER woman saw and went to back QUICKLY as soon as she saw me. And then approximately three min later (not a big shop and no it doesn't take that long to come out from the back--maybe to get "your stories straight". Anyways, she finally comes out. Takes my box. WEIRD. sets it behind the counter. Goes in the back. Comes out with different cinnamon one and orange ones. Gets the chocolate from my box and other diff ones I ordered. And then I said "since you did that, could you throw in those cinnamon you can't possibly resale anyways in for my troubles?" She literally said the following, "No, my boss was mad at me for all the sampling." I looked at her incredulously! She looked at me and then said, "Yes, even though you purchased every one you tried." I left Smith's bakery on 34th street. I know she was speaking in Bad Faith which means everyone...lying out her PIE HOLE!! No one who owns a bakery would complain about three cookies and a person who bought dozens right before closing and timely to boot!! She was just mad that I bought HER COOKIES or she is just WEIRD. NEVER WILL I GO TO THIS PLACE AGAIN. I DON'T feel safe eating what she gave the 2nd time. And I will be contacting my credit card company. And the owner on Monday morning. -- I did contact them to no avail. Trying once again. Fourth and final time. Then credit card company may have their way with them. Life is too short for this boloney. Sad that a walk down memory lane was tainted in such a way by a person in this manner. Sad. And these cookies were to be shared with several different people this weekend. 7 year old bday, a person passing away, a lady meeting her mom for the 1st time, a friend relocating, the list goes on and on. More than one of these boxes are in the garbage. Only ended up eating less than 9 cookies due to the foulness of the staff member. Sad. Sad. Smith's have you've become so arrogant you have no response to one's yelp reviews, calls, etc? Guess so. :( read more

I always come here too late. When I get here, it's usually early or late afternoon. By that time, the pickings are slim. Still, with all their yummy choices, I will find something to satisfy my sweet tooth. From the outside, the building appears very big. When you enter the shop, though, it is pretty small. I'm guessing that most of the building is used for baking all the wonderful goodies that can be found at their various locations throughout Bakersfield. I have not found anything that has tasted bad. My absolute favorite item that Smiths Bakeries makes is their Champagne cake. If they sell them by the slice, then I have not seen it yet. The only time that I've ever tried the cake are at parties. This place was less distinguished than I was led to believe. I thought it would be this huge bakery with a large selection of baked goods. I ended up looking at slats of donuts and some other random cookies ... not really many pastry items or buns or even croissants. I was a bit disappointed, they had some loaves of bread but nothing wheat either. The dinner rolls looked a bit hard. I want to give this place credit as they had delicious cakes but as a bakery, I was definitely disappointed. If you order cakes from here, you need to order seven days in advance but they have some fantastic decorators and they do cakes very well. I only wish that they had red velvet or something. Bought some cookies for one of my clients In Bakersfield and was very pleased with the service. I ordered an assortment of 6 dozen cookies and the clerk was very helpful with suggestions between the standard cookies and the specialized ones. I even broke my low no sugar/carb streak of 6 months by ordering this huge cinnamon roll that had nuts, raisins and topped with maple icing. It was so worth it! I love Smith's Bakery & their sweets but their customer service is beyond horrible. It's been getting worse over the years... very disappointed. We called to place an order for champagne cupcakes and were told they had some and we could place the order over phone since we live out of town. We then called back to place the order and got a very rude person over the phone and were told it's first come first serve. We asked to speak to a manager & then were told that they have NO champagne cupcakes. The manager was the rudest of them all and it's disappointing as this has been a family spot for desserts for over 40+ years. Best cookies in the world. Yes, I'm going that far. Smiley faces, Alliogs, pink pigs, scary clown heads, and thumbprints galore. This Christmas they even had caramel covered apple cookies-delicious!! I know there's a devoted fellowship to their pink champagne cake. It's not my thing, but I still buy them because its a crowd pleaser. Their pastries are tasty too. But go early...like 530 am early to get your pick. They run out of the good stuff pretty early. Or you could just call ahead and place an order. My one complaint: the darn tape they use! I never do Yelp reviews, I have only done it for great experiences, but I had one of worst customer experiences today 12/8 at 1:35 ish a rude Caucasian woman in her late 30's helped me I simply asked what platters were available and she answered in very hostile matter I felt uncomfortable but proceeded to ask about pricing she looked irritated and just said everything's different what do you want ! not even really answering my questions. I was super confused so i just got the pink / chocolate thumbprints she brought the wrong ones and when I said those aren't the ones I wanted she rudely yelled you really want me to dump the bag and start over ! I hadn't even asked for that but I simply said it's fine I'll just keep what's in the bag after she proceeded to be very rude and said are you almost done and I said I still wanted a few more she said well you can't mix I said I can't just get random cookies ? At this point it seemed like she was just saying things to be rude not sure.. she would get frustrated when I would say it's actually this cookie because she kept getting wrong ones. At the end she over charged me she told me the dozen was 4.95 and cookies were 1.95 the total was 20 $ I only got 4 cookies but at that point I really just wanted to leave because it was so uncomfortable I didn't even want to argue with that rude woman . I seem to like reviews about old Bakersfield businesses. It's true, I am a creature of habit when it comes to quality. When I was a kid I used to collect coke bottles and turn them in at Fike's market. I would then use the money to go over to the Smiths counter and buy a Maple bar. It was a little piece of childhood heaven. In the 70s there were Smiths counters in stores all over town. The Green Frog markets, Fike's, all kinds of places that are now closed. I have to admit that I still grieve losing my neighborhood Smiths location, but thankfully I can still get my maple bars and smiley face cookies. They still taste the same. In fact, whenever my relatives are in town there are two demands for Bakersfield food. One is Smiths. I love the old school style of places like Smiths. No pretentiousness about gluten free, free range, low calorie, Adkins friendly or weight watchers points. If you are about that then stay home. Smiths makes no apologies. They are about sugar, fat, buttercream frosting on donuts, and champagne cake. They do donuts, cookies, cakes, and pies, and they are good at it. In fact, they have fattened up Bakersfield locals since 1947. The shops are old but clean. The quality is crazy good and if you try it, you will love it. They make thick, heavy donuts here. They don't do light and airy with drizzles. Be careful with the cookies, your kids will pester you about them forever. I even had to send some to my daughter in Washington DC. Smiths is great at baked goods. Give them a try and don't blame me when you get addicted. read more

The staff is grouchy every time I go in there. I bought a cake from display they refused to put any writing on it because no one was getting writing unless it was a preorder. I returned s few weeks later to get donuts for work every donut I asked for the lady would say she didn't know what that was or say that's not what they are callled. I placed an order for one dozen cookies in which a pick-up time of 10:00AM on February 14th was requested. I arrived five minutes early to pick up my order. To my shock and dismay, there was ONE loooong line outside the door. The line had a combination of people that were there to pick up prepaid orders along with people that still needed to choose and pay for their bakery items. This situation caused an EXTREMELY poor customer service experience. I, along with others that had prepaid orders, stood in line for 40-45 minutes before even entering the door! You need to have two lines! You have two doors that customers may enter. Have the patrons with prepaid orders line up at one door and the rest of the people line up at the other door! You would still be able to maintain a limit of three customers in your business (at one time). Also, once a prepaid customer enters your business, it should not take more than a few minutes for the entire transaction to take place. Your employees need to be able to QUICKLY locate the items that are prepaid. It took your employee FAR TOO LONG to locate our order in the back area. Perhaps, our prepaid order hadn't been filled and she was in the back area boxing up our cookies. Either way...you can do better. Furthermore, the ladies behind the counter should not have to take the time to fold the boxes before taking the orders of non-prepaid customers. The boxes should be folded and ready to go before their work day begins. This small effort on your part would move things along more efficiently. What is frustrating to me is that prior to writing my review, I noticed other reviews that pointed out my same concerns about the quality of your customer service. After you read those reviews, you were presented with an opportunity for your business to listen to your customers and remedy those complaints. Yet, you chose not to do that. My hope is that you will take a second look at your customer service complaints, along with mine, and find a way to reduce the amount of time that your prepaid customers spend in line. When she was done, she walked to the back and didn't acknowledge me. Another cashier who was taking phone orders helped me. Bear Claw with date filling: The filling was okay, but, again, the pie part is not my favorite. I have lived here all my life and have gone to Smith's since I was a kid. The quality has not suffered one bit. I have really not found another Bakery that touches it in taste and quality. When I was a kid, a butterhorn, warmed in the stove with melted butter was heaven. I was in a Junior Bowling League in the 50s-60s and Westchester Bowl served these and every Saturday morning this was my treat. Every donut is excellent, with my favorite being the old fashioned (buttermilk). Of course the thumbprint cookies and frosted sugar cookies are one of my staples. The chocolate in the thumbprints is the same chocolate they use throughout and it is fabulous. The Fudge Nut Square is another favorite. The cake is moist with that famous chocolate frosting and nuts on top. Heaven. The Pink Champagne cake is another favorite. I have to hold myself back from eating half the cake! Have had numerous custom cakes for Birthdays, etc and all are consumed with delight. That sweet sweet frosting actually being a hit. I have had their breads, pies and just about everything and never been disappointed. Now I want to go and get a butterhorn and capture a memory from my youth! read more

Completely revising my review based on my experience today. I have been coming to this bakery for years, probably decades by now. Every time the service was okay, the wait was horrible, and the food was good. Today I went in and I was in a bad mood. I took time off work to run some errands for a birthday for someone, and had to walk out of one place since they were taking way too long, the other place didn't have my food ready, so by the time I came here I was not in the mood for a wait. Big mistake for Smith's. Sure enough, there was a wait. However, when it was my turn they gave me my cake like normal. However, they had another box for me. It was a cookie I had asked for when I ordered the cake. They couldn't find the mold for it, but they looked around and eventually found it. So they made the cookie, for free, just to make sure I was aware of it. This really impressed me. Someone remembered what I wanted, found it, then made it. Best of all I can order that cookie in the future. I walked in with a sour mood, but walked out as a happy customer. The wait will still suck, even if you order ahead of time, but service like this makes it worth it. I only wish all places had customer service like Smith's Bakery. read more

It was threeish in the Afternoon, and I had some time to kill. The nice girls at Dewar's had given me a list of bakeries I should visit. This one was closest, and I arrived here in a few minutes after leaving the bevy of young beauties. So, after eating at an ice cream shop, I drove to a bakery. Cuz I'm super smart that way. I entered the bakery, and the nice lady behind the counter asked me if she could help me with things. I had remembered one of the items in particular that the girls had told me, I asked them if they had a peanut butter pie. She looked at me a bit confusedly for a moment, and walked me over to the pie shelves. She explained that they had no peanut butter pies, and she wasn't aware that they made such a thing. Then she speculated that maybe some other bakery had such and item. She apologized and began telling me about the pies she did have. They did indeed look tasty. I inquired about the ones that would be okay for a few hours in a car. She was quite pie-knowledgeable and told me the ones that could keep. So, I bought a pie. Once you START with a pie, you're quite easily ready to buy less expensive things. The pie is the big ticket thing. What's another donut? So I bought a few of their square donuts. Wheat and raisin. That's healthy, right? I also went with a small pastry thingy. It was yellow. And small. And pretty. She then packed everything up into a big bag. The total was fifteen something, with the bulk of that being the dutch apple pie I bought. I did see the smiley face cookies, and they were cute. I then left the items in my car, and brought them home with me. I ate them the next day, and they were all wonderful and delicious. The donuts were great, the Pie was wonderful and the lil yellow pastry thing was also pretty great. The shop was well organized, cute, nice and clean. The lady was super helpful, super nice and sold me pastries. Remember that Adulting is a hard and difficult challenge every day. But the upside is you can buy pie whenever you want. read more

I moved to town about five years ago and no one could shut up about Smiths so I went down and got one of those smiley face cookies. And you know what? MEH. It was a cookie. And not even a very good one. Pitchfork up, y'all. I'm about to deliver a so-so review of a revered Bakersfield institution. The sugar cookies are cute and whimsy - they have great smiley face and special occasion designs. Once you get past all the designs, you'll realize that half the store is the same sugar cookie batter and frosting - and it's an average tasting sugar cookie at that. I also tried the white chocolate chip cookies, which were flimsy, thin, and dry. They've started making their champagne cake in a cupcake so I finally got to try it without buying a whole cake. The cake itself was moist and fluffy and the cream filling complimented the cake perfectly. The frosting was severely lacking; I tasted more shortening than sugar. The pink shavings on top of the icing didn't do anything for the taste or presentation of the cake - it was sloppy. Overall, the champagne cupcake had a sloppy and amateurish look with a mediocre taste. To top it all off, the cupcake was priced at $3, which is way too high for what you're getting. read more

The one, the only, the original Smith's Bakery! I love their cookies and champagne cake. My favorite cookies are the ones with red frosting; it has a hint of cinnamon in it. Been a customer of Smiths Bakery since I was a child, (66 now). It's been a few years since I purchased anything having moved out of Bakersfield. Not the same anymore. Chocolate stick has very little chocolate flavor as well as maple bar, very little maple flavor. I remember the frosting didn't just get a sugar glaze after a few hours but stayed creamy. No one there remembers Smiths Bakery making a cream cheese pound cake, the best! I guess nothing ever stays the same. They no longer stand out as the best in Bakersfield. read more
