I just love this little place. I'm a fan of drive in and drive thru's :D The prices can't be beat for the food that you get. This is slightly off the beaten path, but worth it. I love the waffle fries, beer battered onion rings, cheeseburgers and surprisingly the FISHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. IDK what they do to the fish, but it's like really good and not what you'd expect at a drive in. Smitty's Better Burger in Hampton, VA is an interesting place to dine. It's been located in the same place on King Street near Langley Air Force Base for decades. They've kept to the original concept of having carports, carhops, and window trays. It's considered a "landmark" in Hampton mostly due to its longevity and (now)-retro look and charm. You get the carhops' attention by flashing your headlights, which is a cool touch, and the overall experience of the food being brought to your car and having the window tray is pretty cool . If you're in the area, this process alone makes it worth checking out. The food is not wonderful, but fortunately the prices reflect this. I would recommend sticking to the basics--burgers, fries, onion rings, etc. They are all pre-packaged foods, and this is clearly how they're able to offer such low prices. I have no problem with certain pre-packaged goods, but I would recommend staying away from the chicken fillet sub, ALL the seafood, and the chili (which looks and tastes suspiciously like Alpo... not that I would know... ). The lunch special is solid. It's the Better Burger with cheese, fries, and a medium drink for $4.49. A five dollar price point is exactly what the special is worth, and I imagine the low prices are what have kept Smitty's in business for so many years. One last thing--the BBQ pork is nothing special, but they do have homemade coleslaw that's actually pretty good. The combination of the two is worth checking out. However the coleslaw can't do much to help out the fried chicken. read more

Today was my first time here. I hear all kinds of great stuff about smittys all the time and I live right nearby. I really liked the old timey look and feel. The simple straight forward menu was nice too. I got a cheeseburger and fries. The fries were amazing! The burger was pretty good too, even though I asked for no onions or mustard and I got onions and mustard. I will definitely be back to check out other menu items. I know this place is exciting because it is retro. Apart from some paint here and there, this place has not changed since the '60's. There's charm in that . . . to LOOK at. But NOT to eat. The food here made my wife and I sick, I don't think there is a very good following of health code in the place based on that, it certainly does not look like it. The server was a bit abrupt. I've been going to Smitty's since I was 8 years old. My mom would take us every Friday for a treat. Now that I'm an adult with kids of my own I take them to Smitty's for a weekend treat. I stopped by a while back. I parked and turned on my headlights. After about fifteen minutes a member of the staff came out and dropped off a food order to the truck next to mine. I inquired if she could take my order, she turned, made eye contact and without saying a word went back into the building. After a few more minutes I went inside and was promptly told it was only for employees. I asked if I could place my order and was told to leave. I guess you have to be related to someone who works here to get service. I called the business and after answering I was hung up on. What a bunch of turds. Soon as u pull up, it's all the makings of a "go-to" local greasy spoon. I'm not from the area so I cannot give nostalgia points but I see why it's been here 60 years. Great simple menu. Went 4 lunch today,burger was not dry very tasty,fries,not so much,6 on a 10 scale for taste. 2 things,first they ask you to roll your WINDOW DOWN to BUT a few inches to HOOK THE TRAY ON,well,I got my burger in the car and took a bite,then I noticed 3 Flys in car,I went to roll passenger side down more and hit drivers side window button by accident,tray with drink,ketchup,fries,salt & pepper crashed to the asphalt....well nice girl gave me new drink,fries stayed wrapped,good to go on them,I asked her if people have done this window roll down/tray dropping off before,she said yes it happens--so now I feel a little better! I have been there a total of 4 times, if you count yesterday when I got tired of waiting and left. Ya see, a few of the gals run over to put their little reserved paper under the wiper to claim the tip. Once that is accomplished, and if you are not ready to order, the level of service goes out the window and your spot in line slides to the bottom. Yesterday, and the time prior, the parking lot was about half full. This gal, who reserved me with her "thats my car" paper under the wiper probably walked by my car 5 or 6 times. I went there today, parked in the lot, left my headlights on. I have done this years before, however this time I was completely ignored by the wait staff. After fifteen minutes I left. I guess you must call in and order since they only seem to bring food and not interested in taking orders at the vehicle like once upon a time. I will not go there again. Not bad at all. Some say the burgers are dry, but mine was fresh and kinda juicy. You can customize your burger and they have a pretty good menu. I pulled up to the front and the car hop immediately greeted me. She was very kind and answered questions I had about the menu. I also had the waffle fries. They were crispy and seasoned. They don't have shakes which I was disappointed at, but they have crushed ice for their sodas which made me happy :) I will return to try other menu items. read more

I stop by every other week or so, and have never been disappointed, the carhops( yes-real carhops) are always very attentive and friendly. Busy in the summertime but open year round. This place is a hidden gem! We are new to the area and this place was recommended by my hair dresser. We stopped in on a Friday night at 6 and had no trouble getting a parking spot. We had the better burger, corn dog, waffle fries and hush puppies. Everything was SO good, greasy, but delicious!
