Steven is an angel on earth! I came in with what felt like a long list of problems. I recently got pulled over and received a fix-it ticket. I had expired tags for 2 years, needed a smog test, never received the paper work from the DVM (had nothing to show), I owed fees to the DMV and needed a new registration. And I work full-time so I arrived to the shop 20minutes within closing. Steven was so extremely kind, non-judgmental, insightful and genuinely wanted to help me. Within minutes he was able to smog my car, renew my registration, pulled up my DMV fees and help me pay, gave me a discount since my DMV fees were $400+, scraped off my old tags, placed my new tag on my license plate and handed me my proof of registration. I was in shock at how he was able to fix every problem within 20minutes. He smiled and just asked me to pay it forward and help the next person I met. I've been taking all my cars to Smog Express for years now, and have never been disappointed. I know the owner Steve personally, and he is a top notch guy. His staff is friendly and they get the job done fast. I'm usually out of there in 15 min if there's nobody ahead of me. He has a nice waiting room with TV, water, and plenty of magazines. Also all the former Tower Books/Video/Records stores are just a few hundred feet away. You can check out R5 and Avid reader and before you know it your car is ready. His price is reasonable too, around $55 for the check + certificate (I believe there's a $5 off coupon in the phone book). Pay them a visit, you'll be glad you did. Extremely convenient and helpful staff! They weren't busy when I arrived (I called ahead) and my car was smog checked immediately. I was also given the option to pay for and receive my registration sticker on site, saving me time and hassle with the DMV. Smog Express is a great place to get fuel or have your car tested for smog. The gas here is one of the cheapest around, just dont be fooled by the prices on the street side sign, that's the cash price. However, the credit price (.10 cents a gallon) is still on par with Arco. This place is much less crowded than Arco also. As far as smog goes, I have taken a few of my cars here and have always found the techs to be friendly and knowledgeable. As far as smog-gas stations go, I think this is a pretty great place. read more

Yesterday January 8th 2021, I called this establishment and spoke to the smog technician named Steve. Steve had far beyond average customer service, steve answered all my questions patiently, and explained everything in layman's terms that I was able to understand, he was extremely friendly and told me to come in, I was already planning on getting a smog so I decided to just go in instead of calling around and finding the lowest price because based on his outstanding customer service it so far sounded like the place I would like to go. When I showed up he was their waiting to great me and I handed him my keys and he offered for me to wait and let me know that It will be done shortly I decided to run down the street and grab some taco bell by the time I made it back it was finished, he than took me inside to take my payment and offered to do my tags for me if I'd like I didn't have time so I denied to do the tags at the time but I did have a few more questions and he answered them without any issues or rushing me. I will be coming back here anytime I need a smog done I live in citrus heights about 25 miles from this place and honestly I'm sold I'd prefer to take the extra time, miles, gas just to get the great simple experience and awesome customer service that steve provides, I will also be referring all my friends and family to Steve and his business smog express. The quality of customer service provided at smog express by Steve couldn't have been better and I think more business could really take a lesson from this amazing company because this service is something you seldom get in this day in age. Excellent, swift, friendly service! I pulled in around 9:15 and was promptly greeted before I even made it to the door. We met inside and I filled in very brief paperwork and was told it would only be about 20 minutes. I had my dog with me so he offered the fenced in patio space to wait, where my pup was able to sniff and I could sit in the sun. I also made use of the restroom which added convenience to my errands! Less than 20 minutes later I paid and was on my way, including with a reminder to pay my car's registration by the posted date (which was great because last time I had to get a smog check I managed to forget to follow up with the dmv payment!). Steve was so friendly and QUICK! I called before coming in, he said he could get me in right away. I showed up right as he was finishing another car. He greeted me with a smile, and started on my vehicle right away. There was a nice air conditioned waiting area, even though I only had to wait 10, maybe 15 minutes max! Including payment!!! I couldn't believe how fast I was in and out of there! He was also transparent about pricing on the phone, which I very much appreciate. I'm a girl who knows nothing about cars and I'm always scared someone is going to try to scam me or overcharge me.... Not the case here! He was so so so nice. The gentleman that answered gave me pricing and said I am welcome to schedule in case they get busy but that I can also just show up. I opted to show up later that day and was warmly greeted. The service was very quick and the owner was helpful! At first my car did not pass smog. Instead of handing me the slip of what had failed and leaving me with my new dilemma he asked me questions. He noticed I had a new battery and asked how long ago it had been replaced. I explained that I had just replaced it the day before and he suggested I drive the car around to allow the computer to rest and adjust. An hour drive later i came back for the free retest and it passed. I appreciated him taking the time to trouble shoot the initial failed smog. This is the third time I've taken my car here to get smogged. In the years past I've had great service and no problems. This time, the tech told me that I had a broken valve which he then proceeded to show me and pulled something out, telling me he was doing me a favor. He said I needed to replace it but that it should drive fine for a couple days until I could find someone to fix it, but it might be a hard part to come by (this was friday at 4:30). When I left my car was idling poorly and within 5 miles my check engine light came on. I have not had any problems with my car previously so I was really freaking out. The next day I found a mechanic who fixed it within an hour and thank goodness nothing else with my car was messed up. When I took it back for my retest I informed the staff who didn't even offer an apology. I wouldn't say this place is horrible, but after this experience I will not return next time I need a smog check nor will I suggest it to others. I think the people who worked there before are out on Folsom blvd. now, and the techs working in there seem somewhat inexperienced. read more

I got my car smog-checked here at the end of December. I called a few places around town and I discovered they all added on $8 for the smog certificate fee, which goes to the state (I don't know what for). The price was the best outside of that. This year the DMV picked me to have it done at a "Star" station. (don't know what that was for either.) There's really nothing to getting the smog checked. You're not a smog tech. They are. They open the hood, rev it up, check things. You pay them and turn in the paper to DMV. Turns out I had a broken oil dipstick, so I needed to get the test redone. It was the first time I ever needed a retest. Both guys who looked at my car were courteous and informative. They did not try to sell me anything I didn't need. And really I'm not sure they do sell anything else. I was not charged for the retest. When I got the oil dipstick thing worked out (common problem, said the guys at CarQuest down the street), the Smog Express guy recommended I go to their other location on Folsom Boulevard to pick up my registration sticker as a free service they were giving repeat customers. He said the owners were considering closing this location. I did not take them up on the offer, but it did sound really convenient. They take appointments, but this shop is in a good location if you have to wait -- nearby stuff like Willie Burgers, Avid Reader, Records, Dimple, Tower Cafe. Since the Javalounge isn't open anymore. There's also an indoor waiting area with pretty current magazines and Judge Joe Brown on the TV. read more
