My car had obviously been sitting for a while and had a new battery, meaning it couldn't be tested. Rather that tell me that upfront, they decided to scam me out of 50 bucks and have me come back to charge me an additional $20. When I brought this up the mechanic was literally screaming at me about the "rules" and the "law"- I didn't ask him to violate either and just pointed out that not asking an obvious question was poor customer service. Like you're the mechanic my guy- how am I supposed to know that the computer resets and it can't be tested right away? One of the worst customer service situations I've ever encountered and the fact that the mechanic could barely string a coherent sentence together wasn't helping either. Stay away- I only gave them a 1 star review because it's the lowest Yelp will allow. read more

I have been going to this business for at least eight years, but probably more. Same car. Never had an issue until last week. On or around August 20, 2026, I went in for a smog check. I was informed that it failed to connect with OBD II and RPM not detected. They said it could be a wire or a relay or maybe even trouble with the transmission and they could not pass me for smog. They suggested that I go to a mechanic that they recommended, Cook's or something like that. They said, if I got the issue fixed and came back within thirty days, they would charge $20.00 more to get the smog cert. I said that I have a mechanic that I love and trust. I called my mechanic as soon as I got home and got an appointment for August 24, 2026. Well, I went in first thing that day, and they said the OBD II port read normally. They were actually able to give me a smog test there, and it passed. I should have went to my regular mechanic for my smog cert in the first place. I didn't realize I could. Silly me! Now, my mechanic did mention that one of the pins was pushed further back in and so they used a longer connector to get to it. I don't know if Cap City got newer equipment or something. But I won't go back there anymore because it seems wrong that I had to pay $53.81 and didn't even get a smog certificate when there's really nothing wrong with my car. Yes, one of the pins was pushed further back in, but seems like they should have been able to figure that out. This caused a lot of worry and stress for me. I know that stress is just part of life, but this was totally unnecessary. I'm just grateful that I got my smog cert, and that there is nothing seriously wrong. read more

I'm really glad to have Cap city smog in my neighborhood. They run a tight ship. Walk in Star station in arcade Carmichael area. A lot of stations are stopping or being dropped from smog because they don't meet the programs strong and unnecessary rules. Those rules are stifling progress in the local car industry by having dealers and consumers hunt around for less and less star stations, which is clogging up the ones that are left. Hopefully cap city smog can keep up the good work they are doing for community. read more

My usual smog check shop had disappeared so I had to find a new place. I relied on a recommendation from family and it turned out well. This was actually a lot nicer than my old place. Friendly, efficient, and helpful service. There was a very short wait, nice place to sit in large open air garage. I was dreading the wait and the whole process but it was all very easy! And only one person running the shop. Ps my 17 year old Subaru turbo passed :-) It is a little hard to find especially for the first time as it is in a strip mall without signage on the street. Came in for a Smog check, they quoted me 30 minutes. No appointment was necessary. I decided it couldn't be done that quick so I went around the corner to get some pupusas and headed back an hour later. My car was ready for me! And probably had been for a bit. Some tips: in a small shopping center but you'll see their $41 smog check sign on the sidewalk! Pay in cash and it's $50 total, or be like me... and I never have cash so there was a $2 credit card fee. I'll be back when I have to do my next smog check! read more

These guys don't know what they're doing. Everything passed on my car except for the exhaust smoke. Took the car somewhere else not even an hour later and it passed. They do not know the difference between water vapor and smoke. Would not trust these guys to give a good assessment of your car. read more

My family has been doing business with cap city for years and have no intention on stopping. Of all the times I've done business with Vic and the guys I've never once had an issue or seen/hear another person have an issue. Go see Vic he'll take care of you. Please clear and verify your monitors have all reset just to not waste time. I'll admit I've forgotten a time or two. I felt bad but victor did not make a big deal about it he just reassured me of what I need to do and told me to return when everything was ready to pass the test. The entire staff is comprised of good people I only take my cars here and there's at least 3 smog shops closer to me. Took my vehicle in to get a smog test. They failed me for a failed catalytic converter. They said it didn't match my aftermarket headers. Went to another smog place which is more professional in my opinion, but passed the smog test. Apparently this place didn't even bother to ask about the headers they just failed me. I have paperwork for the aftermarket headers and that was enough to pass the test, and my catalytic converter was functional. I only gave them two stars because I found I Groupon thing for them but I wasted my money and time. Find another spot if you want professional advice and service. read more

Was told to come here by another company that gave me a coupon that this place gave them !! to help them get more Business well they don't honor the coupon till you go to pay !!!! then they mention it's not valid and charge you more then what's on there cards at the register !! I said ok no going to argue over 10 bucks not worth the me getting angry and ending up with a charge !! I will not ever go back I rather spend good money at a good place with people who have good morales and honor !!! I love the new location on El Camino Ave! The staff is just as fast and efficient each and every time I needed to be smogged. I think I've used this business about five times at their old location before this recent visit on 02/09/22. In my instance, I now have an older car that needed a Star Certified station. I needed to make an appointment due to the car's age. They mentioned that the test will take about 30 minutes. I arrived earlier than appointment time. Was immediately tested and it only took 20 - 25 minutes to complete. (Passed!) He even noticed one of the tires was a little low so he put air in it, which he didn't have to.
