This place failed me twice, and both times it was a "visual" inspection failure. Both times because of small cracks in hoses and tubes. However, when I went to replace the tube the second time, the mechanic told me the crack didn't justify a visual inspection failure because it wasn't big enough and it was on the very end of the tube (see the image attached). So I wonder if they failed me on purpose just to make more money because they charge you regardless if it succeeds or fails. Anyway, going forward I'll only be going to locations that only charge you if you pass, otherwise they can fail you "visually" every time and you won't know if it's a real failure or just them trying to rip you off. read more

I made appointments for a smog check on back to back days and each time the shop was closed when I showed up for my appointment. The following month I make an appointmoint to smog my mother's car there because they offer DMV access too. We Arrive for her appointment and ask about getting her registration stickers after the test and was told they no longer do that. OK. Then we proceed to wait, now it is 45 minutes past our appointment time and we have yet to be called upon. I did my yelp research and found their location in Berkeley under a different name. I visited their website and found out they had a local near me. Literally ran down here in the middle of the day at the earliest point I could get off to get it tested. They were not busy and I got right in. I brought Wiener Dog along for the ride and they were more than accommodating. She even sat in her own seat in the waiting room. Everything on my truck passed except for the gas cap. Thankfully they had one there that I could buy for a very reasonable price and was able to pass everything. I think I was there less than 20 minutes. When the Car Registration renewal letter from DMV arrives each May (for a July expiration), I always look for the "Smog Test Required" line. I'm either relieved when I'm on an off year, or tense because it's another errand that has to be run. I also search my mail for coupons, because full price (with Certificate) can run about $90 (including a new "surcharge" for my older 1999 Subaru Legacy). The Smog Check Express Coupon offered $30 off, so off I went to Concord on this beautiful Sunday morning to get the deed done. These guys are associated with 7 Days A Week Smog Test in Berkeley, who I previously used in 2006, 2008, and 2010. This time around, it was simply more convenient to have the car smogged out here. Smog Check Express doesn't have the lounge atmosphere that the Berkeley place does, but the they got the job done quickly and efficiently. The only glitch was that the Smog Computer directed the Technician to warm up/recondition the car for testing. That usually means that this old car needed a little State-approved help to pass. So with ~175,000 miles on my Legacy and a 2 Year Smog "pass", we'll see whether my trusty Subaru or a new acquisition will be making the next visit here. read more

This place used to be the most reliable and cheap smog test shop in town. I'm not sure if they're under new management or what, but they've become extremely shady. They list the smog test at $79 dollars. When I showed my receipt from the previous year, the employee agreed to match it. My car didn't pass and I came back the following day to a new employee who would not budge on the price and wanted to charge me the full amount "because of their bonus and that's how the boss wants it". I was given the option to wait 2 hours for the other guy to show up or pay the full amount. I won't be back here again. read more
