I've taken my 2006 RV here for Smog checks a couple of times now. Entrance to the lot is pretty easy and the bay can accommodate my rig. The test was done quickly and professionally. One year I had initially failed the test, and the technician noted that a wire that should have been connected to my air filter housing was loose. I reconnected it and he re-tested successfully. This is my third or so visit to smog star. My husband has also been several times. I have always been very happy. I usually set an appointment for first thing in the morning and I am typically in and out in 20 minutes. The shop is easy to get to and clean. The technicians are polite and efficient. We had one snag once where my husband made an afternoon appointment (like around 4pm) and still had to wait 45 minutes as they took the people before him first (he says they were non appointments). Not sure if they were just having an off day or were backed up or what, but out of all the times we have been that was the one annoyance. They have even smogged our RV (they have huge bays and an ok sized parking lot). I really like the ability to make and change appointments online and they always seem to have appointments available. They give discounts too for future smog checks if you bring in your receipt. read more

Although I was very happy with the service, because my battery had been disconnected prior to bringing a car in the oxygen sensor for the smog check was not active. I was initially charged $40.75 and was told that if I bring the car back I would just have to pay the certificate of $8.25. Upon returning, the oxygen sensor was functional (having driven the car for a while) but instead of the $8.25 I was charged $40. This is not what we had agreed upon. I made an appointment online and got the email confirmation. Double checked online and confirmed they were open. I was really excited because I had the $20 off smog coupon and it says they could do it in 20mins which was perfect for me to get it done on my lunch break. Well I get there, and they are CLOSED . Metal doors are all shut, I tried calling multiple times with no answer. COMPLETE waste of time I was so disappointed because it is not indicated anywhere that they were closed. read more

Warning! Bait and Switch. The technician baited me into paying for a smog test and an overpriced retest. I went to Smog Star Express on 1/28/22 with my 2000 Celica.  I explained to the technician that the vehicle had been stored for years, the fuel light stays on, air filter bent, etc. and asked for any recommendations on what should be done before I get it smogged.  The technician was dismissive and shrugged me off claiming there was nothing to do until it failed smog. He explained that the initial test would be $50 and a retest would be 1/2 off. I agreed to test and of course it failed, then the technician explained the vehicle should be driven 60+ miles to reset the computer (emissions monitor). He should have made that recommendation BEFORE the initial test, as the vehicle clearly had been sitting for years, full of cob webs and a layer of dust.  Frustrated, I paid for the first smog test at which time the technician pointed to a $79 sign and explained, "I know you're not going to like this but the retest is going to be half off $79.95." Seriously!? When he said the retest was 1/2 off, he acted like it was 1/2 off $50! Again frustrated, I asked to speak to a manager/owner.  The technician refused to give me a manager/owner contact info. Fast forward to today when I look at the Smog Star Express website before writing my yelp review and I discover they actually have a list of recommendations prior to testing, none of which were explained to me, not even when I specifically asked.  Their website claims that they have the best, most experienced techs with integrity and the best intentions for their customer's benefit and no profit motive to fail a vehicle, which has not been my experience.  Their tech withheld his company's own advice in order to get another smog test fee out of me. They're only as good as their worst technician. read more

I was a customer but changed to Smog and Gas. I went there paid about 55.00 with coupon. I didn't pass and he asked if I had work done on my car. I told him yes a bearing and a sensor that was damaged during the repair. He then said for me to drive 200 miles and that it would probably pass. So I asked if I had to pay again he said yes 31.00. Well I drove more than 200 miles and went to go get tested but the location was closed. Two other ladies were waiting and one of them had been there for over an hour. It was 8:00 and Yelp said it was open but it sure wasn't. I called the office no answer. Well by 8:30 no one was there and found Concord Smog and Gas. There was no wait, the tech offered me a coupon for my business, and if I didn't pass they would tell me why and what to fix and twat it for free within 30 days. . Well I passed and we both won because they will get all my business for three cars and recommendations for others to go there. Somebody commented back from the business saying this was not the case. Came in today for a smog as I just bought a used car and need to switch it over in my name. I brought the car in and all was great. I was called in once my smog test was finished and told I had failed the smog test because my catalytic converter was "not listed on ARB website". Completely false, I did my own research with a different smog professional and my catalytic converter is exempt from the ARB so therefore it was suppose to pass smog. So pretty much I had $51 stolen from me. I called back and was told "so uh you pretty much gotta go through the BAR referee". Come on guys, do better. I made an appointment at 12:40 and was seens right away, despite the fact that there was only one employee running the ship. He was collected and professional, helped 3 people (including myself) and once and was quick too! From my experience with retail, having a rush can be tough, especially for a single employee. But he did what every employee should do: Acknowledge those who came in, let them know it'd be around 15-20 minutes & all with a calm demeanor (sometimes staff can get overwhelmed). Tech literally spent less than 5 minutes "testing" my car before driving it around to the outdoor seating where I had literally just sat down. When I asked if everything was ok he responded that he didn't know and that he would meet me in the office. He then came in with a sloppy, nearly illegible report which apparently says I failed because the emissions sensors on my car would not allow testing. Considering I had just paid fifty dollars for less than five minutes, I wasn't on board with the lone proposed solution: Drive it around for 150 miles, hope the problem is corrected then come back for a fifty dollar retest. Repeat as required. When asked how he could be unsure of the results of a test that he was unable to perform, he became very defensive, reporting that they follow the law and if I don't like it I can contact the (agency or smog governing body) listed as a disclaimer on the report. That wasn't necessary. It only took 5 min of research to find that my car is one of only a handful of make/models with known issues and SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR TECHS TO FOLLOW during testing. (Table 4 )I called back to try to resolve, but the info, not surprisingly, fell on deaf ears. There are countless ethical SMOG service providers in the area. Unfortunately these guys are pitifully incompetent and unethical. read more
