Smog is always such a hassle, so I always appreciate good service. I dropped by this afternoon to get my car smogged. I did not have an appointment, but they were able to take me right away. I was in and out in probably less than 20 minutes. I had downloaded a coupon online for $30 off, but had forgotten to print it out. Made an online appointment after reading the reviews. I was the only person there, tech was waiting at the desk, as one would hope. Immediately processed me and asked for the key said it would take 15min seemed like only 10min and Passed. It was a 2001 vehicle so with CA SMOG certificate $79 via Square iPad App, retest was half off,if needed, seems fair. Told me the DMV would send me the registration in the mail in 10 days. Like the rockstar that I am, I waited until the day my auto registration was due to get a required smog. I chose this business based on proximity and Yelp reviews. Luckily for me, there was only one person being helped when I arrived. There were beverages in a small glass refrigerator and a basket with a couple of snacks. I assume they weren't an art installation and were there as courtesy, or for purchase. I arrived at 11:55 and the smog was complete by 12:25. A full five minutes or more after that was spent getting the fancy, space age credit card device to work. I was wishing I had cash on me to speed things up and get to my 1 o'clock appt, but everything went thru. The DMV cert is automatically mailed to them, you receive an email copy if your email addy is linked to your credit card and you receive a printed receipt. Remember to print your coupon, which you can look up online if you don't see one here on Yelp. Net price was $49. It's a net $59, after coupon, for older cars The tech was polite, courteous and professional from start to finish. Highly recommended. . read more

This shop by far is my favorite. I have been coming here for years. They are courteous, friendly, quick, efficient and professional. I appreciate the clean lobby and the offering of snacks and a beverage while I wait. I may be lucky, but have never needed and appointment, just drop in and has never taken me longer than 20 minutes in and out. Visited second time this year so far during COVID and they are by far the most accommodating when I have been in a hurry. These guys did okay by us. Not great, but okay. We set an appointment four days in advance before bringing a 2002 Mitsubishi in. We received a confirmation email, and an email reminder every two days between when we set the appointment and our appointment date. When we arrived there on a Sunday afternoon, on-time for our appointment, there were three or four people waiting. The (only) technician on duty explained that it would be a considerable wait, that it was very busy, and that there were several people ahead of us. We explained that we had an appointment for 2pm. The technician hung his head and said "man, I wish they would stop taking appointments on Sunday." He would not honor the appointment and explained that we would need to wait behind everyone else who had walked in. He -should- have honored our appointment and squeezed us in ahead of people who were walk-ins. Sadly, he did not, and not wanting to wait, we left. We scheduled our day around this smog appointment and it was disappointing to have it turn out this way. Why have an appointment system at all if you're not willing to honor the appointment and perform the work as close to the appointment time as possible; even if it means displacing some other people? (Other people who had not gone through the effort of scheduling an appointment?) After finding that most other places were closed on Sunday, I chose to see if there was anything that could be done. I called back and the tech explained that while he wouldn't do anything about the wait, he was willing to offer us a discount and smog our car for $40 out the door. The wait was a little over two hours after our original appointment time, but we did pass and the paperwork was minimal. Bonus point for giving us a discount, but bad experience by wasting our time. You need to either honor appointment times, or not take them at all. read more

This is my 4th time here. They make it simple, and are always friendly and down-to-Earth. Here's my experience: Walked in. Tech greeted me and asked what was needed. Filled out the form and gave the tech my keys. And 20 minutes later, smog is done and papers for the DMV are in-hand. That's it! This place is fantastic and I highly recommend it. I went in for a smog check 1/19/15 and it failed on the emission test. My dad recommended me to go to Bay Area Smog which is where he takes his car. Everything was fine with my car so I didn't understand why it did not pass. I went to Bay Area Smog the very next day and it passed. I called Smog Star Express and told them that my car passed and the guy on the phone said he can't do anything about it. Smog Star Express charged me $67.00 for it not passing. Bay Area Smog charged me around the same price but they do a free re-test if your car does not pass. Smog Star wanted to charge me $40.00 for a re-test. I find it very weird that my car passed smog check at a different place the very next day. I will not go here again. read more

Overall satisfied with the service. Friendly and efficient staff get you in and out in under 15 minutes. These new smog checks are way more convenient than the old ones. If you book your appointment online it's approximately $59 with the cert for newer cars (2000+). However please note that if you book your appointment online you will not get the $20 discount offered here on yelp on top of it. I walked in expecting it to cost around $40 and it ended up costing me $60. It probably states somewhere that offers can't be combined, but I have two small kids, and no time to read thru fine print. They are open until 7:00 which is awesome, but I'm a cheap-o and will probably find another place that is closer to $40 for the next time. If you have the $60 and no time to spare, this is definitely the place. read more

This is a place to avoid. I had my aftermarket carb sticker here and he wouldn't honor it. Plus this guy wants $78 to do a smog. I will not be coming here again. Beware. Stay away. Needed a Smog Check on a Saturday - went to three places and they were either closed or did not have a Smog Technician for the day. Last place referred me to Smog Star Express. I always check YELP, however today it slipped my mind as I was frustrated with having to run around town. I was thrilled that they could get me in right away - ran to Costco and came back to a finished car. Only downfall is I should have checked before hand the cost. I have never in my life paid more than $30-35 for a Smog Check...and this was $79 - OUCH! I recommend this place 100% but please remember to check the price first - had I checked in on YELP, I could have saved $20 which would have made me feel a little bit better (although still high). read more

Classic bait and switch, avoid at all cost. Their website says a Smog Check for my car is $51. So when you get there the charge $79. $71 plus some $8 CA state fee for a total of $79. They have a $20 coupon. Do the math and either way the total should be $59. But they wouldn't take my coupon nor give me the $51 price that's marketed when I booked the appointment. This is false advertising and a classic bait and switch. Will not be returning. read more

Pro: I received my $30 Off Postcard at the perfect time to meet my cars registration date. I'm not sure if their was done electronically thru their database but I was thankful anyway. These guys are Always $30 cheaper than most stations (with YELP check-in discount). So long as their around THIS is my smog station! ($10 extra for cars older than 2000.) This place is always a 1 man operation (Owner during the week and an older gentleman on the weekends) but whenever you go, these guys are fast considering theirs only one guy at all times. I have 1991 Geo Storm that has been sitting in the driveway and I want to sell it. The driver side door latch is broken and it has to be rigged to stay shut. Also, it's registered non-operational because I never drive it. I was told I need a smog check to sell it to a private party. I did my yelp research and picked Smog Check Express. I get in the car and drive it down to their shop, making sure to stay on residential streets to avoid a ticket for driving a non-operational vehicle. Needless to say, it took FOR EVER to get there. The guy who came up to help me seemed nice enough until I explain to him about the driver side door and his reply is, and I quote "well you need to handle that 'cus I aint about to mess with it." I was shocked because there are so many other ways to refuse service to someone. I'm not exactly sure what the driver side door had to do with a smog check anyway. I got back in my car and used the navigation on my phone and found another smog place. I call them and explain the situation to the guy and his response was, "what does the driver side door have to do with a smog check? Bring it by right now and I'll take care of it." Thank you! That's what I'm talking about. He asked me a few more questions about my car and after finding out about my registration situation, he referred me to his buddy's shop so I could avoid the major streets. What a nice guy. I called the third guy and explained my driver side door situation and can you guess what his response was? You got it. "What does the driver side door have to do with a smog check? Bring it by right now and I'll take care of it." The only reason I'm giving these people 2 stars is because I didn't actually get the service done here and I can't speak on that. I will never come back here and I will tell my family and friends not to patronize this establishment. read more
