I own five cars, four are high performance, of which one is an exotic. The backstory: In August, my check engine light went on. I took it to Pinky's where Ralph told me there seemed to be nothing wrong with the car, it was probably a misfire. But to actually diagnose it and repair it, it could get costly. Knowing I hope to get a new car ASAP, he said it's perfectly safe to drive and I should just wait. Now it's January, I'm due for a smog check, and that pesky engine light caused me to fail my first inspection. The owner at Smog Zone went over the numbers with me an said that while they're fine, it's still failing, likely because of the engine light. He suggested I get it reset, drive the car around for 30 miles or so to make sure it doesn't come back, then return for another test. I did just that and soon passed with flying colors! This place is amazing. Haik actually called me back a couple of minutes after missing my call right before they opened. There is no business that I know that calls back after missing your call. But anyways, I was second in line and he told me that it'll only be a 15 minute wait. I came in a little after they opened, thank god it was not busy. This was my first time at the Smog Zone and all I can say is that it won't be the last one either! The guys were extremely polite and friendly and I was in and out for a smog check in maybe 5 minutes!!! I know, amazing right?! I did get lucky that when I arrived there was no line. Who likes getting their car smogged? Probably no one, but it's something most car owners have to do at least every other year. So finding a good smog check service provider is not always easy since we so seldom need their service. My turn came up this year and I yelped and found the Smog Zone which was a godsend. Living in the Valley there are hundreds of auto shops around town but it's not until you actually need one does it become hard to actually find one that's nearby, easy to get too and not so busy they can get you in and out in a matter of minutes. I ventured down Oxnard Street across Sepulveda and Van Nuys driving by a few places that were either closed or seem too shady for my taste. I was elated when I came up on Smog Zone and found a parking spot to wait out my turn. Service was great, competitive and friendly. If you're faced with this painful reality, take your sad self over to Smog Zone! You will get in, out, and be treated with kindness and dignity (and don't forget about their $15-off Yelp coupon, like I did!). They have a small, waiting area for you, both inside and outside (yes, they even have a patio), where you can sit in peace and in clean. For an auto shop-related business, this place is actually very well-kept, mindful, pleasant (for the very little amount of time that you will have to spend there), and not at all sketchy or creepy. FYI, their business is right where you drive in, to the right, and not in the back. They share the lot with other car-related what-have-you. Just park wherever, and do your thing. Haik and Sam certainly went above and beyond for me and my disgruntled Scion, which failed its smog test, at first. I had suspected that it would. I had my reasons. But these Smog Zone pros turned my frown upside down--more like they kept me from taking an Ativan--and everything turned out just fine, in the end. Great service! I've been coming here for the past 6 years and their work has never disappointed me. Haik is very nice and I highly recommend going to him to get your smog check done. I've moved a few times within the past 6 years, and now drive about 30 minutes to him just for a smog check, because I trust the place. I saw a bad review in the comments, read half of it, and I don't understand how that's possible. Car problems are annoying. Taking the time to go get a smog test is also not how we want to spend our day. A failed smog test is even more annoying. But none of these are reasons to be upset with the service or the shop. It's your car that failed the test and not the service. Frustrating yea but don't bash on an honest business owner and their work. Specially when they helped you out a week before telling you not to do the test before taking care of the check engine light. That shows honesty not lies. I've had my older VW GTI fail a test here in the past, and yes it was frustrating but Haik and his father were very kind and told me what I needed to do before coming back for another test. UPDATE: UPDATE: UPDATE: After reading all of these glowing reviews,I decided to call the manager Haik and tell him how rude and nasty Brent,his assistant,was to me during my cars inspection and I'm really glad I did. Haik read my cars test results and told me that I failed because I had had a dead battery and therefore needed to reset the computer in my car by driving it on a long trip of at least 35 to 50 miles. I never failed a smog test before and I think this is a ridiculous scam by the state to get more money out of California drivers for registration. I already paid $51.75 and was never offered a coupon of any sort,for this "star station" smog test failure and now I had to waste my time, money and gasoline creating even more smog just to pass this "smog" test. Senseless! Anyway, I drove it 40 miles(no easy feat) and then had it retested by Haik and it passed. I had to pay another fee for the retest but it only took 15 minutes. Haik really went out of his way to be kind and make up for the terrible experience I had with his nasty assistant Brent and I really appreciate that. If you have a car, 1999 and older, be sure to get ready to haggle for a good price. The manager started with a $75 price for the smog check. He said older cars are charged way higher price because they have to do a lot to check the car. Maybe he meant that they have to check the regular way as oppose to just checking the computer of the newer models (which is far easier and quicker). Anyway, since I was pressed for time, I was able to bring down the price to $50 for the smog check and get on with it. And my car failed the smog check and I was out $50 less certificate cost. So beware. Just a fair warning. Even though lower prices are printed on the wall (behind your head when you enter the office), if you have a car 1999 and older, be ready to haggle.
