Tex-Ethiopian Amaze Combo Plate with lamb and brisket, berbere mac n cheese, and bbq beans
Catherine D.

I've been wanting to try this place for a few years now back when they were on Matlock. So when I looked them up again and saw that they moved to a new location right by my house, I knew it was time to give it a try. And I'm so glad I did! First off, the service was amazing. Our waitress was very helpful and gave great recommendations and Kira was wonderful. She came by a few times to make delightful conversation. Now on to the food. It was phenomenal. The lamb and brisket were tender and flavorful. The mac had a nice amount of spice, not real spicy but you could taste it. The beans were amazing and the bbq sauce was the perfect amount of tangy with a hint of sweetness. I will definitely be back again to try more of the menu and venture into the Ethiopian stews!

Had to try this place super high reviews and looked good on DDD. Had the awaze ribs with mac n cheese and injera. Had to try the injera, Ethiopian flatbread. It was a good lunch. Not quite the other worldly experience that others have experienced. The ribs were good and the Ethiopian spices were a nice touch. The ribs were a tad bit chewy and certainly not falling off the bone. The mac n cheese was really good with hint of spice. The injera was interesting, I thought it was a tad bitter but I would not know better. The service was disappointing, my server disappeared after my meal and first drink. She was focused on ordering her lunch. I flagged another server to help and close out. Overall it is fine, but there are better BBQ joints out there like Terry Blacks and Hard 8. I'm glad I tried it but still short of a high Texas BBQ standard.

The waitress had not tired any of the Ethiopian parts of the menu which was disappointing. She recommended the bbq.

Was outta chicken but on my 3 meat I got two briskets which I can never get enough of, lamb, BBQ beans, toast, African cabbage, and some kind of Africa bread. Was so full I couldn't eat half of the meal. But I love leftovers tho so it's cool.

Second visit. We live quite a distance away. We came in January and loved every bite. For Father's Day we asked where my husband wanted to go and of course it was Smoke n Ash. It did not disappoint. Loved every bite.

Yelp gift, I love it!

As my fellow Yelpers said, today just seemed really off with the service and level of attentiveness. I felt like they were unprepared when it came to our event. Possibly, they should only do it on certain days, days when the regular crowds mixed with Yelpers, will not cause their energy to be one of stress and lack of organization. The person at the register was versed on their menu, but did need the help of the owner. It was very busy, but she managed to stay on track, and the manager made sure everything was correct and that I received my Yelp Swag. Two meat plate: Sausage: Was great, but it was a bit spicy. I don't remember it being spicy, but again, it has been a bit since I've had their sausage. Brisket: I'm not a brisket person, but I wanted to try something new. It was very good and not fatty, that's the way I like it if not chopped. The sides: Mac n' cheese: I did not get the one with the added spices; I didn't want to take a chance that it would be too spicy. The mac n' cheese was store-bought. There was nothing original or homemade about it; it was truly disappointing. Potato Salad: This was another disappointment. The potato salad was bland and left something to be desired. Once I added a pinch of salt, it was okay. Lemon Cake: The cake was good, it was moist and not too sweet. I'm willing to visit again, but I will choose differently.

Awaze brisket, awaze lamb, Mac n cheese, and fries

Checked this place out with the family. Heard about it on Diners and drive ins. The restaurant was clean and welcoming. Service was great. We ordered: Awaze ribs, lamb, brisket, vegan collard greens, beefy greens, Mac n cheese, rice pilaf, beet and potato side, lentil side and a cabbage side. We also ordered the loaded injera nachos. The food is delish. Table favs were the Awaze ribs, brisket , beefy greens, nachos and lamb. I personally didn't like the lamb but I was out voted!!!

I got the Tex-Ethiopian platter which combines elements of Texas-style BBQ with Ethiopian influence. The awaze pork ribs were good, and so was the brisket. The rib tips and the berbere macaroni and cheese were delicious too. However, the red lentil stew was just okay. On the bright side, the Texas toast and the injera were the stars of the show. Overall, I might go there again but try something else on the menu.

Ethiopian meets BBQ!? Was excited to try this one. We got the 4 person platter that comes with 4 sides and a side of fries for 3 adults and 2 teens. Def enough food. Opted for the pork and beef meat selections vs the beef and lamb. The meats were all good and I loved the seasoning with the Ethiopian flavors. Only one I didn't care for was the ribs as they were dry and not fall-off-the-bone...flavor was there though. I think my fav was the awaze tibs. Sides: we tried the Mac and cheese, potato salad, beefy greens and the yellow split peas. Of all of those I liked the greens the best. Split peas were also good and had a unique flavor profile. My friend loved the potato salad but I didn't care for it as it was pretty heavy on the mayo. Mac and cheese I would pass on. The teens really loved their fries lol they were seasoned well. It also came with two small mounds of rice, 4 halves of toasted bread and a piece of injera under the awaze. I wish they provided a few rolls of injera as well. Definitely worth checking out!

Smoke & Ash is such a gem! If you've never had Ethiopian BBQ before, this is the place to experience it. The flavors are bold, smoky, and deeply spiced in a way that makes every bite memorable. We ordered a combination platter so we could try a little bit of everything, and it was absolutely the right move. The brisket was tender and juicy, the chicken had a beautiful smoky char, and the traditional sides like injera, lentils, and collard greens tied everything together perfectly. The injera was soft, tangy, and the best "utensil" you could ask for--it soaks up all the spices and sauces beautifully. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a modern touch but still plenty of cultural influence in the presentation. The staff was friendly, attentive, and happy to explain dishes if you're new to Ethiopian cuisine. What really stood out is how unique this place is--Ethiopian flavors blended with Texas BBQ. It feels both familiar and completely new at the same time. Definitely a restaurant I'd recommend to anyone wanting to try something different but delicious.

By the time the store opened, the line had grown to being over twenty parties long, so plan accordingly if you don't want to be waiting for a while. Between the four in our party, we shared a three meat BBQ plate with bacon burnt ends, brisket, and their house made sausage. For our two sides, we chose their hatch chile mac n cheese and their Mexican street corn. Following the recommendations of many Yelpers, we also ordered two of the brisket tostadas and two of the birria tacos. When we received our plate of meat, I was a bit surprised at how little of each meat there was on the plate, but in hindsight, this ended up being the perfect amount of food, where everyone was able to get a sample of everything. Of the items we ordered, my favorite was definitely the burnt ends. These were melt in your mouth tender, and was insanely rich and decadent. Each of the three pieces in our order had a beautiful bark on the outside that resulted in a satisfying crunch with every bite. The casing to the sausage was snappy and the sausage itself was very juicy. The brisket was fall apart tender. The brisket was a bit light on seasoning, so I ended up using the Aztec Gold BBQ sauce they had sitting at the table with it. The sides that we chose were both delicious. The pasta in the mac n cheese was cooked perfectly and the noodles was generously sauced. The elote was sweet and smokey, and the Cotija cheese added creaminess to the side. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at Hurtado Barbecue and wouldn't hesitate to recommend a visit if you're in Texas and are looking for great tasting BBQ.

Rating: 10/10 Date Visited: 5/10/2025 I ordered the Brisket ($36/lb), Pork Ribs ($30/lb), Pork Belly ($30/lb), Turkey ($39/lb), Jalapeño Cheese Sausage ($7), Bread Budding ($7), and Banana Pudding ($7). This place is AMAZING, it's the best BBQ I've had in my life (I lived in Texas for 20+ years). All the meats were amazing. The pork rib was the best thing, so tender and juicy. The pork belly was a huge surprise - it's so good too. The turkey was one of the most moist turkey I've ever had my entire life. The sausage was cheesy and juicy, one of the best ones I've had. The brisket was solid too, but surprisingly my least favorite of all the meat I ordered. The desserts were decent, but I don't think I would order that again. Would 100% come back and it's definitely worth the 2-3 hour wait. I would recommend coming early at 8 or 9 AM to wait in line and avoid the food selling out (which happens as the day goes on - pretty much everything is sold out by 1 PM).

If you like a stronger black pepper taste in your bbq then I think you'll like it. I do think their subtle asian twists on bbq is cool and unique. Ordered: - Brisket - They give alternate half and half lean vs moist. It was good I liked it. - Beef Ribs - Mom was interested in trying it so we got it. I'm just a pork rib girl more than a beef rib girl. - Pork Ribs - Unfortunately, it wasn't as "fall of the bone" as other places. It may have just been the piece we got, but the one we had was 70% bark and 30% meat (if that make sense, I prefer more of a true 50/50 split) - Lamb Ribs - Not something you see at every bbq so we got some to try. I liked it. Can't decide which one I like more between pork vs lamb ribs. - Lao Sausage - Their sausage is kinda big. I felt like 1 sausage is the size of 2 sausages at other bbq joints. It's serves with sticky rice and honestly it works really well. - Mac & Cheese - A bit heavy on the pepper. It was alright not my favorite mac and cheese. - South Carolina Pork Hash - a unique side that is special to them. Pork Gravy over jasmine rice. Too mushy for me. - Lemon Kale Slaw - It was alright. Not my favorite slaw. - Banana Pudding - Yummy. I really like their banana pudding. It had a slight cinnamon and almost graham cracker taste to it. - House made bread - Yummy. Almost like a sweet roll meets white bread. We went on a rainy Friday morning. Arrived at 9:30 ish, got our food and seated by 12:30 ish. Asked the dude first in line what time he got there and he said 7:30ish. People abandon their lawn chairs so they had a decent amount near the entrance of the store that people just borrow while they're waiting. When the rain got bad, they let customers wait in the covered area where they store the smokers which was nice.
