Unfortunately my Son and I went for the first time. Popcorn chicken tasted like the meat was bad. His street form also had wierd taste. He didn't care for the SJ burrito. On the expensive side. Service wasn't stellar either. We won't be back. read more

Ordered trash can nachos with brisket, discovered it was shredded pork and waitress was very apologetic, however the cook just sent a small bowl of shredded brisket to the table for us to add to the nachos.... Ummmm, no I ordered, you prepare, I eat... this is not a self serve establishment! Preferably would have just settled for an apology with some sort of adjustment on final bill. read more

As a food service worker I am disappointed by the service at this restaurant. We ordered the chicken lollipops after seeing the description on the website saying it would come with a smoked cream cheese skillet and chips. It did not come with these things, so we went back and asked for the missing items but was met with a rude, unapologetic response. They did ask how they could make it better and they offered us chips, salsa, guacamole, and queso so I said yes. They then went on to charge us $18 for this "replacement".. so like what?? Don't offer someone the food to "make up" what was wrong with the order and charge them. read more

I was really hoping to leave a glowing review because I'd love to see another barbecue restaurant succeed in Grand Haven, but unfortunately, this visit left a lot to be desired. We ordered the pulled pork nachos, which are advertised as a shareable appetizer for 4+ people and cost $22. The portion was barely enough for two people, and the amount of pulled pork looked like only an ounce or two across the entire plate. They offer the option to add more meat for an extra charge, but at $22, there should already be enough pulled pork included without paying even more. The biggest disappointment was the lack of barbecue sauce. At a barbecue restaurant, I expected that to be a given. Instead, the nachos were topped with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, a large dollop of sour cream, and white queso. The toppings felt uninspired and didn't deliver the flavor I was expecting. For the price, I expected a more generous portion, better toppings, and a more flavorful dish. I genuinely hope Smoky Jose's takes this feedback to heart because Grand Haven could really use a great barbecue spot. I'd love to come back and have a better experience in the future. read more

I REALLY wanted to love this place - a bbq/mexican fusion in the heart of downtown Grand Haven. We gave it some time after their grand opening to hammer the kinks out, and they just missed the mark. It was not busy, as we went in on a Saturday afternoon, and it took forever to get drinks, to be able to order, and to get our food. We shared several items at our table, and nothing had much flavor, tasted fresh, or was even the correct temperature. Sadly, I'm not sure we will be back, but I hope they can turn their direction around. read more

$25 Fajitas had the tiniest amount of chicken I have ever seen and the whole entire entree was just an appetizer. The nachos I saw somebody eat at the next table was literally 3-4 times the amount of food. Just go to Chilis next time you crave fajitas. The chicken quesadillas had no chicken and just cheese. We visited Smokey Jose's in Grand Haven on May 16th during the Kite Festival and had one of the worst service experiences we've had in a long time. After ordering, we waited nearly an hour with no food and zero follow-up from our waitress. The restaurant wasn't busy, yet we were completely ignored. We had to stop another server just to get drinks because our own never came back. At one point, we did get a bit loud because a spider ended up on my friend's sweatshirt, which caused a brief reaction at the table. However, no staff member ever came over to check on us or ask us to lower our voices. When we asked to speak to the owner about the situation, a manager came over instead and refused to get them. Rather than addressing the lack of service, he immediately told us we were being cut off from drinks--even though each of us had only had one. He claimed people had complained about us being loud, but instead of handling it professionally, he skipped any warning or conversation and jumped straight to cutting us off. It felt unnecessary and confrontational, especially given the circumstances. At that point, we canceled our order and left. Poor service, poor communication, and completely mishandled from start to finish. This place ruined what should have been a fun day at the festival. read more

Was headed to another place near there that was closed, so I wondered in, was sat right away. The place is nice inside, good atmosphere. Service was fast, food was pretty quick, I did a pulled pork sandwich and it was tasty, waffle fries were good. I will say the price is a little steep, I don't mind for me, just something people should consider. read more

Really good BBQ: I had the smoked turkey wrap, which was yummy and nice because sometimes you can't get healthier options at a barbecue joint. Worst Taco ever. Our waitress, Kelly said everything was made from scratch, however I beg to differ. The taco plates were served cold. How do you serve a taco with a cold shell that I could not identify? The rice and beans were not fresh and again cold! The food was so disgusting that all of us could not eat the rest of the day. Great food, Great service, Great manager who, unlike a few other places, keeps politics out of the atmosphere and welcomes EVERYONE. Love the downtown location and they seem motivated to become part of the community. I'm pulling for them as we need good restaurants downtown. read more

The margarita was overly sweet and very weak. The food was pretty horrendous to be honest. Hardly anything in the taco and the chicken was weird greasy bits. What a bummer to find out the new place in grand haven Smokey Jose's, is dishonest and taking advantage of the people who work there. My son was hired and promised $19/hr. His first check said $12 and they said don't worry, it's just because they are training. Now that they are opened his rate was supposed to be $19, as promised by the owner, Jack Armstrong. His check today was for $14/hr and he questioned it and said he needed to have it adjusted and would not work for $14 when $19 was promised and they messaged him to say they'd take that as his resignation. With what they charge for dinner there they can definitely afford to pay what they promised. Shame on they for taking advantage of people. read more

service was fine. place looked nice. but oh baby no, the food was bad. i got chicken tenders, you can't really mess those up. however my friends food was bad. my friend got fish tacos and had to spit it out. my other friends got something in a hot plate and i guess the rice was hard. i don't play about my friends and what they eat so i said something to the manager. he took my friend's tacos off the bill which was nice. but i would NOT recommend this place. read more

Wait staff was friendly and attentive, owner came to our table a few times during the meal to check in and make sure everything was going well, and the food was top notch. Genuinely, out of every single restaurant I've ever had a taco at, this was the worst one. Tbh I don't even know what the shell was. Tasted like shit. Mid. The chicken had zero flavor. Rice was good but we keeping that on the down low. Since the all of the food was bad it brings everything down. Chips and salsa was 8 bucks for two little bowls. I took some of my boyfriends nachos and about spit them out cause what did I just eat. Man the only thing that was good was the water. Disappointing. Also why is everything overly expensive. Like why am I paying $15 for the worst two tacos of my life. Like I could've been eating or doing something way more exciting but instead I wasted my time eating two damn mid tacos. I was so excited to try this place and had been waiting patiently for it to open. But what a disappointment. I went with the Mexican food instead of the BBQ and have to say there is some bad Mexican food in Grand Haven and Spring Lake, but this was the worst. The chips were stale, the queso was watery, the salsa tasted like a can of stewed tomatoes dumped in a bowl, the fajita meat was flavorless and unrecognizable, rice and beans lukewarm and flavorless, and to top it all off, everything was overpriced. It is obvious to me that whoever created the menu's recipes has never had real or good Mexican food. Taco Bell is better, and that is no lie. A note to the owner, I want your restaurant to succeed. We need a good Mexican restaurant here. Please... fly to Dallas, go to a restaurant called Uncle Julio's on Lemon Ave. Learn how it's done. Up your game or your place isn't going to make it. On an up note, the cornbread was good. I plan to go back one more time to try the BBQ, and hope that it is good. The staff was nice and I liked the place and location. read more
