Every time and I mean every time I go camping in Big Bear, I stop in at Smokey's for a special blend of whole bean coffee. Ok, I get some jerky too but my first and foremost reason to visit is for the special blends of coffee. It isn't unusual for me to visit Smokey's twice while I'm up there. Riding my relic ten speed from Serrano Campground to get my coffee is a must. There is always a place on my bike rack for at least two blends. Last week I brought home five different blends. Everyone at home was very excited to see what I brought home from my trip. There's no telling what I'll bring home next time. Perhaps a new blend like I did this time. Oh my goodness, we found this place while leaving Big Bear and if I had found it sooner I may have been there everyday! I am a sucker for fresh jerky and roasted nuts so this place was right up my alley and I have to say it did not disappoint. We bought the toffee cashews that were perfectly roasted with just the right amount of sweetness and then the jerky...we prefer a softer jerky so we went with the teriyaki for the kids and for my husband and I, since we like spice we went with the jalapeno garlic and the ghost pepper!! While the jalapeno garlic was by far one of the best jerkys I've ever eaten and will definitely go back for, the ghost pepper was strangely addictive and had a heat that crept up on you. Came for our daughter's birthday to big bear and on our way to starbucks saw this place. My family loooooveeeees jerky. I think we spent way too much time in here and about $80+ in jerky and then came back the next day for more. I like the original stuff...chewy, thick nothing else but salt and pepper. This place has the best if that's what you like. They do have the teriyaki and other flavored jerky but my go to is their old fashioned dry. I prefer this place over mahogany smoked up in bishop. I used to tell everyone that this is the best jerky in the world, but I'm sad to report that something's different here now. The chewy nuggets were my fave - but the last time I came here, they just weren't the same. The teriyaki nuggets were saltier, when before they were sweeter, and the change in sugar also affected the texture. Sigh. Has anyone ever tried Pemmican? Pemmican is a cake comprised to animal fat, mixed berries, and dried meat pressed together in a small clump, made chiefly by the North American Cree Indians. I have not tried Pemmican, but I have had is modern-day successor: Beef Jerky. While on a retreat with my theater company, XRT, my friend Tinia and I stopped at Smokey's Jerky. I was captivated by the quaint cabin the moment I laid eyes on it. The size of the store was not too big or too small, but just right. A wide assortment of dried meats were displayed behind a glass counter. Wooden shelves and tables throughout the room housed candies, nuts and dried fruit awaiting sale, reminding one of an old-time mercantile. We made our way to the jerky counter and dried a variety of edibles: Sweet and Spicy Beef Jerky - A premium mixture of salt, sugar and spices made a very nice rub for this meat. The combination of flavors lifted ones taste buds to new gratifying heights. I bought a half pound of this for our assembly to enjoy. Seven of us decimated the entire lot within an hour. That's how good it was. Hot Teriyaki Jerky - I enjoyed the spicy, exotic taste of the meat, but the texture was far too rough and brittle. Did not care for it. Nuggets - What an unusual delicacy! Thick pieces of dried meat that were moist on the inside, yet had the jerky texture encasing it. It was sort of like having a steak without any of the work. Very good. In addition to tasty morsels, Smokey's also has a fine collection of coffee beans, available in several exotic blends. I purchased a half pound of their Cookies and Cream Coffee, and it's sensational. There just a hint of Oreo in each cup. I should have purchased a whole pound...or more. They even carry beef jerky made specifically for dogs. The cashier we spoke with, Tracy, was very friendly and conversational. Parking is convenient in the spaces directly in front of the shop, or to the right in a small lot. 5 stars to a place that offers not one, but two delicious flavors of turkey jerky! I don't eat red meat but my boyfriend is always munching on beef jerky and makes it look sooo good. I was so glad when we walked into this place on our last visit and they had the teriyaki turkey and a spicy turkey jerky. I got a mixture of both and had to come back for more because I ran out of it on the first day. They also have a ton of candy for the kids and adults that don't care too much for jerky. They're super friendly here and always willing to give you a sample of anything you ask for. They even let us bring in our pup while we were salivating over their jerky and candy. I was up at Big Bear for a church retreat. I told my friends who have never tasted the goodness of Smokey's beef jerky that I would introduce them to its succulency before we headed down. Unfortunately, my senility got the best of me and I couldn't remember the name of this jerky place I had visited the last time I was up there. I asked the lady at the gift store in our camp if she knew anything about jerky. She shrugged her shoulders and told me about a store in Pine Knot ave (in the main village). So, after we packed our stuff from a rejuvenating weekend at cedar lake camp, we headed into town to check out this jerky place. Once we got there I was sorely disappointed. That was definitely not the place where I had been to before, where my love for jerky magnified a billion fold, where the nice old man who was there touched my heart with his love for jerky and dried fruits and people. Nope. We bought some anyway since we couldn't find the OTHER place. However, once we started on our way down to 18 South, we passed by a few large corporations and things started to look familiar to me. Vons? Stater Brothers? My canine senses told me that I've been there before. My eyes went to auto-pilot as I quickly scanned the streets from left to right, left to right. My friend thought I was losing it. But then... I saw it. I saw the stand-alone white hut looking place with the Beef Jerky sign outside. Oh, the familiar call that beckoned me into its warm and loving arms. I parked my car but saw a sign that read "be back. out to lunch". Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But there was hope. The door was creaked open. Aha! The old man forgot to take it down! We went in and waited patiently for the people before us to hurry up and leave so we can have the old man to ourselves. Once it was our turn, we tried every morsel of beef jerky and conversed with the man (okay, I'll stop calling him old). He was the nicest guy in the world and talked about how people from all over the place came here for the jerky. It was kind of cute cuz I know a lot of people from many different parts of cali go to big bear, not necessarily for his jerky, though it might be one of their main stopping points. Anyway, I got a 1/4 pound of the hot teriyaki nuggets and a 1/4 pound of the regular teriyaki nuggets. I have a strong feeling that I got the same thing last time I was there, over a year ago. Those were the best ones (IMHO) because of the texture (nuggets over strip, baby) and of its comparative juiciness factor. The total damage was $17 but he gave it to me for $16. He's so good at weighing it that he can scoop a bunch of jerky into a bag and it will weigh precisely .25 pounds. One of my bags weighed .24 pounds and he grabbed a piece of jerky with the thongs and put it in the bag and it was up to .25 pounds. We were shocked at his skills and he admitted, "It's scary sometimes." He's so cute and friendly. We told him that we thought he was closed because of the sign and we took it down for him. He laughed and told us, "I didn't actually leave yet but I'll put it back up when I do." Apparently, he had put up the sign to go out to lunch but some customers came in so he tended to them but after those customers, another group came in and so on. We totally believed him because after us, a pair of people were waiting desperately for us to finish talking so it would be their turn, a woman came in who said she'd be back later but he gave her some jerky first (with our consent), and as we left, a couple came in. The man probably never made it out to lunch. I remembered to take a business card with me this time so I can always remember this place when I'm up there. It's my #1 stop from now on, and my last stop before heading back down. Smokey's forever! PS. They also have one of the best chili mango ever! It has that tamarind flavor. If you loved lucas growing up (aka, baby bottle), you'll love these mangoes. So juicy, and then covered in tamarind powder and chili and sugar. If you eat the mangoes and alternate it with the beef jerky nuggets, you'll be whistling a different tune all the way down big bear, despite the horrendous traffic during holiday weekends. PPS If you love the jerky from Alien fresh jerky (in Baker, CA, along the way to Las Vegas), you'll love Smokey's. Beef Jerky lovers unite! read more

This place is pricey, so know that before you set foot inside. It's $8.75 for a 1/4lb. of jerky.... But holy crap is it worth it! Imagine, if you will, that Joseph delivered the baby Jesus from Mary, skinned him, spiced him and immediately put him into a smoker. His savory nuggets of Eternal Life-flesh wouldn't even come close to the orgasmically mind-altering experience of eating the Teriyaki nuggets they have here. Words will do it no justice. This isn't hyperbole. If you're in the area you simply must stop here and get at least a 1/4lb. of the beef jerky nuggets. Mindbogglingly awesome. read more

My review is for the jerky only. I have been coming up to Big Bear ever since i was a young kid and i am 30 now. Every trip to Big Bear i have stopped at Smokey's and purchased beef jerky. Oddly enough, i have never reviewed Smokey's, but after my last trip over Thanksgiving week I decided that i needed to review them because the jerky has been amazing for the 20+ years i have been eating it. I always go with the nuggets because i find them to always be the most flavorful and tender. I can't tell you which flavor is the best because honestly all of the flavors are amazing. I get a 1/4 of a pound of everyone of them. I have been eating and making beef jerky since about 15 years old. I make a pretty good batch, but no where including myself makes beef jerky better than Smokey's. Very highly recommended! ***** (5 Stars)- Amazing, zero flaws, a must go! Tried this place after reading rave reviews on Yelp, and all I can say is HOLY COW that is the BEST jerky I have EVER tasted! The best flavor has got to be Whiskey BBQ. The jerky is so moist and tender and has this wonderful sticky texture to it. It is sweet and yummy. I also got the peppered nuggets, which were also good but nothing compared to the Whiskey BBQ jerky. I think I'm going to have to visit Smokey's again before I leave! Closed on Tuesdays! I love beef jerky. Correction. I love GOOD beef jerky. Unfortunately, as a child I was spoiled forever by being introduced to the best beef jerky in the whole world at a very young age. Nothing ever measured up ever again. My family would visit Big Bear every winter, and we'd always stop to get beef jerky at this one shop. My parents didn't remember what shop it was, and I was too young to remember. I went up to Big Bear with a friend this past weekend, and I made a point to seek out the best beef jerky I could find there, hoping it would come close to my memory. Well....... I FOUND IT! The woman was very nice, was happy to give samples and suggestions. When I tasted the "Old Fashioned Dry", I exclaimed "That's it!! That's the same jerky from when I was a kid!" Even though I hadn't tasted it in over 20 years, I knew right away that I'd found my old love. Perfectly thick, very dry, and an incomparable flavor. The kind of jerky you can chew and chew and chew, and chew some more. I wasn't adventurous enough to try the alligator, buffalo, or venison, but I'm sure they're also fantastic. Been coming here for years, even before they moved to this location. Always been a great place to visit. Great quality, plenty of selection, and the price isn't to bad. Working staff has always been very nice. My favorite item to buy from there has always been the teriyaki nuggets. Always been very moist and easy on the teeth! They are the best of the best when it comes to savory flavors and variety of meats. Have you ever heard of tuna jerky? We didn't until we came to Smokey's and it's absolutely delicious. Using heavy duty kitchen scissors, they cut us big generous samples of all the flavors we wanted, and even let us try samples of their candies and dried fruit! We were starving for lunch when we came in, but we left with tummies happy and tastebuds buzzing for the next bite of jerky bliss. Of which we bought 1.25 lbs :) We're Smokey's jerkyfans for life!.. I visited 2/5/22 in the afternoon. Terrible customer service. Will never stop here again. The female at the register was rude and rolling her eyes when we walked in was annoyed that there was customers. I asked her if she was closed and she stated " no what did you want!" The beef jerky was not worth the price at all. Sorry but this was the worst experience ive had at a store in a long time. Customer service training would be nice considering there is so many out of town tourist who are trying to enjoy their trip and dont want to be greeted by a rude cashier. Omygosh I can't believe that this place only has ONE other review!! I love this place... My husband and i are self proclaimed jerky connoisseurs and the jerky here is really good with good selection. We stock up on jerky and snacks every time we come up here. Pricing is very reasonable and they let you sample the jerky before you buy it. We brought our friends here on a weekend trip and they loved it too... (we actually stopped into this place 3 times during our 4 day trip) :P Don't forget to try their chili lemon gummi bears or dried mangos both which are amazing! I think they'll ship to you too, but I've never done that.. looks like I might have to pretty soon here though... my stockpile of jerky is disappearing faster than I expected =X read more

Yesterday my fiance bought some of their Hawaiian Hazelnut coffee and had it ground in store. This morning when we turned on the coffee and got some very weak coffee in our cups. When we opened the coffee maker we saw that the coffee grounds were all over and looked like it had exploded. So we had to go back today to get the coffee reground to be able to use it for the morning tomorrow. Over all the coffee from what we could taste was fantastic and service was pretty good. The only reason for the 4 out of 5 is just because we had to get the coffee reground. Most people who come up here and buy coffee will not have access to a coffee grinder; but it is an inconvenience to have to come back. Still, great coffee! read more

I've been waiting 23 years to find this beef jerky shack. This place has the best beef jerky I've ever had... It's chewy, moist, and has boat loads of flavor. With over 8 flavors of nuggets, strips, and sticks, Smokey's is a must when in the area. The best flavors: Whiskey BBQ, Spicy Turkey, and Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire will surely leave your mouth burning for 5-10 minutes, but damn it's a good burn. The nuggets are really good, and so are the sticks... you really can't go wrong with what you order. Not only does Smokey's have beef jerky but it also has a very nice candy and chocolate selection. The light chocolate dipped honeycombs were amazing... also, if you intend to eat the ring of fire jerky you should absolutely get a bag of chocolate to cool your tongue down. For two people, I recommend a pound, try all the different variations, ask for separate bags, and be prepared for some serious jerky! Also, if you eat the ring of fire, be prepared for it to burn twice. read more

When people ask me what I love about Big Bear, my answer is 'it's places like Smokey's.' Smokey's is a wonderful little shop just off the main road, they sell tons of candy (by the pound), coffee which I believe they either roast there or else package there. Either way it smells delicious, haven't had a chance to try it just yet. Now the main event is the jerky. They've got probably 20+ flavors, everything from sweet teriyaki and honey jerkeys to more savory hickory and pepper jerkeys. If you're daring, they've got jalapeño and ghost pepper ones as well, I haven't tried though yet though because I'm working up the nerve Anyways. OH EM GEE this place is so legit! If you are a beef jerky enthusiast or just feel like snackalackin, stop by Smokey's Jerky. Freaking bovine gold. haha. At first when I saw Smokey's Jerky, I thought the little shack was old and didn't get much love. I was on my way to Vons to pick up groceries but decided to make a pit stop across the street to Smokey's. The lady at the counter allowed us to sample the Jerky, and after sampling half the case we walked out with Buffalo jerky, Whiskey Jerky (wet), and black pepper. The jerky was so good that we finished all of it immediately, and returned first thing in the morning. RECOMMEND: - Whiskey Barbecue Brisket: great flavor thats sweet with a very mild, slow heat that kisses the back of your throat. - Teriyaki Brisket: also sweet but the meat quality is softer and chewier. Really good! The only thing I want from Smokey's is lower prices. But will I pay for it? Yes. But I'm a crackhead for jerky. read more

Pros: - The owner/operators are extremely nice, and they'll give you a sample of pretty much anything you want. - I didn't try any of the jerky, but the nuts were delicious. I bought a bag of smokehouse almonds and chili-lemon pistachios, and they were awesome. My gf bought a bag of butter toffee cashews and they were also excellent. - A ton of selection - a bunch of different jerkys, nuts, candies, whatever. Cons: - It's pretty pricey. My little 8 oz. bag of pistachios was $8.75 and the 12 oz. bag of almonds was $12.50! To give some perspective, a 6 oz. tin of Blue Diamond smokehouse almonds that you would buy in a store costs about $3-4. So the ones here are basically double the price. But hey, it's a small mom & pop operation and I like to support small businesses. read more
