I have to say this place is amazing. Truly a top notch state of the art shooting range and retail store. These guys are always so nice and informative and they understand not everyone is a pro with guns so they are happy to answer all and any questions you have. F this place! I will never step foot in there again. Went here to do a PPT right when they opened at 10:00 on 03/10/19. Kid at the front asks how he can help and we told him. He goes to ask a couple guys working the register on the range side and comes back to tell us they can't do it until maybe noon or later. WTF?!?! I understand there's a line for the range but once they check them in why can't they do it? "we're really busy today" I told him to his face that they just don't want to do a transfer. Asked why he couldn't and he said he just wasn't able to. The other party when to go shoot and I looked around at their overpriced merchandise and about 20 minutes later someone else came in to buy a rifle and the kid that said couldn't help me does the dros for this guy. By this time there wasn't a line for the range, nobody was at the other register and two guys were just talking to each other. I almost lost it. Went outside and left and did the dros at another shop. Not to mention it's $20 an HOUR or $35 for 3 hours. read more

Just wanted to shot one of my Agency guns I got back. Showed up before doors opened first in line and directed to the waiver "iPads". Now these things are garbage wherever I have used them. No difference here. Form takes forever to complete as people pile in behind you. After clicking over and over again waiting for the DNA sample portion the process is started over. Second attempt, same outcome. No staff around to help. One individual was checking ammo for some reason, sorry left the incendiaries at home. But didn't seem to care about what else was going on. By this time the line is fifteen people deep. Individuals that by some miracle completed the form, DNA, Poly and interview were directed to the back of the line. This is regardless of when they walked in the door. We left. This can be better. Won't be returning to find out though. read more

After my regular range in Ventura closed I needed to find a new spot. I just checked out Smokin' Barrels today and I was very satisfied! The staff was very friendly and informative. The counter person took the time to explain things to some newer shooters who were in line in front of me. They have a ton of shooting lanes so you won't have to wait long for your turn. The shooting range is brand new and state of the art. You use a touch screen to control the target and you can even program to move for a more "tactical" experience. I got there at the end of the day, and I'm assuming that the sales guy I was dealing with was already tired. I purchased two guns and went on my way. I was not so happy, so I contacted the shop owner through Facebook and I did get a response from him immediately. I was trying to cancel my order because I saw something cheaper somewhere else. When I arrived to the shop their internet system wasn't working and they could not process any orders at all (sales or refunds), but the owner, Mr. Link was still trying to do whatever he could to help me. He was giving me great service even when he was under pressure, and needed to also make sure everything was working in his shop! I cannot articulate how wonderful our experience was at Smokin' Barrel. Here are some highlights though. My son's 18th birthday wish was to go shooting. I was a bit nervous about the idea even though I have been shooting for 30+ years. After reading a great review from another father and his son birthday experience, I was more comfortable heading to this range. The staff was immediately helpful and super friendly, as were the customers we interacted with. The gentleman running the range was amazing, explained everything and was there to help and would handle any possible safety issues. Made me feel very comfortable, safe and welcome. He even gifted a few targets for my son's birthday. Very unexpected! The store and range itself is very nice, clean and easy to access. Shooting: It was so nice to push one button to send the target to a set distance, had not seen that before, very cool. We were done shooting and we went to pay and they gifted my son's range fee and really let us stay longer than the 1 hour. Again, totally unexpected. Then they let us look at the guns for sale, answered all my son's questions and were beyond patient, even though they knew we were just looking. The time there was just outstanding and again everyone was so nice and helpful. We will be back and we will recommend to friends. I walked into Smokin Barrel today to look at AR 15's. I do not have an AR yet so I just began to research them a few days ago. I had narrowed it down to several choices and had a few questions. The employee that I was unfortunate enough to get was about as unfriendly as could be. It was truly the most awkward conversation I have ever had. This employee acted as though I was wasting his time. I left and will never go back. I went directly to a competitor and purchased a LWRCI for just under $2,000. I recently purchased a new rifle and I was recommended to take it to Smokin' barrel to test it out. This is the only indoor range that I've been to that allows you to fire semi automatic rifles. I had the pleasure of meeting the range officer Mike, he was very helpful and knowledgeable. I also had a brand new red dot scope and I've never sighted in a rifle. Mike actually took time to teach my friend and I how to sight it. By the 9th round I shot I was on point and now I'll always know how to sight in a rifle. The range is 5 * and so are the people. The pro shop has practically everything you can need to build a rifle from the ground up and you are able to rent many different calibers of firearms. Smokin' Barrel has been my go to spot for range shooting over the last few years and while only shooting my fathers firearms I recently expressed interest into making my own purchase and the staff have been over the top when it comes to helping with any questions about purchase options. Ryan helped me with my purchasing process and welcomed me to handle any of the firearms I was interested in and showed me each firearms features and what might be pros and cons to peoples personal liking, having that hands on experience and knowledge of differences in options helped clear up what could be a difficult hang up on a final choice. Ryan and the rest of the staff were also very informative on what options had the best value for what I would be using my firearm for either being regular range shooting at SB or at a further outdoor range in my case. This place is really nice, yes it cost $20, so go somewhere else if it's too much... I have a AR-10 and this is one of the only places I can fire this weapon, so I stick with them. People get weirded out that the Range Officer is walking around and talking, or looking behind you... Learn to ignore, I was in the Marines and I could give a shit if he/she is breathing down my neck, I'll still try and shoot straight. Every range person I have been in contact with has been really cool, and I let them check my weapon out when they come by. The place is nice and they have 2 separate lane areas, to be nice I do ask if they want to stick me where less people are, my stuff is a bit louder than a AR-15, by allot, so I try to be kind. read more

Ended up getting a membership here and so far it's been great! I purchased my first handgun here and even though the guns sold here are way overpriced (Including the handgun I purchased but I'll blame it on the pandemic ) the individual that helped me, genuinely took the time to talk about the features of the gun and also his experience with that particular gun......so I guess you can say that the experience was worth over paying for the gun :-) I do wish that they would allow us to shoot buck and bird shots instead of just slugs (high velocity slugs are so hard to find now a days) but I totally understand why. I would rate this place at 3.5 stars. I have had good experiences and unfortunate experiences. I hate their lack of a website, and the use of a Facebook page for a business. I generally like their dual range set up, but I really wish they would put the rifles in one room and pistols in the other. I understand that all the lanes can handle rifles, but when you have a near full range of pistols and the other range closed, and a guy comes in with a muzzle braked AR-15, it's not a good experience. The range is narrow, so it becomes chest rattling loud with rifles. The front desk people can less then helpful. Ammo is also pricey, bring your own, and prepare to have to display everything to get in. Good thing though is that the range masters are generally good and militant about gun movement. That being said, there are also chatty and nosy range masters there that can really be distracting. Get a better website, move the rifles into another room when there is space, and I'd be a lot happier. read more

Another visit and overall still a great experience. The older gentleman was a great range safety officer. As I was about to finish my session. A lady and her teen age son moved onto the lane next to mine. The lady wasn't familiar with her semi pistol and started swinging her pistol towards my sides while struggling to release the magazine. So I quickly stepped back and the RSO rush in to help her out. (People...if you have a new gun... familiarize yourself with safe operation before going to the range. This is a pretty nice and high tech range in the Ventura County. However, like a previous reviewer said, the RSO in my lane was pretty nosy. I have military experience and know how to handle firearms. If I violate any safety rules call me out, but I felt like I was being constantly watched. I've never experienced that in the other ranges I've been to. They also don't allow hollow points for some reason (first range that had that rule that I've been to) and $20 per hour is steep. I'll stick with Oak Tree and pay that much to shoot all day. read more
