I thought it would be different to take my girlfriend to learn some firearm training to celebrate Valentine's Day and it was! Since this was our first time we needed to take a course on firearms handling and safety, little did we know Nathan, and old acquaintance, would be helping to set up our appointment with the instructor Don. Don was extremely patient with us, brought fun into the training session and was able to show a couple of newbs the basics of safety when handling a firearm. After we were able to demonstrate the knowledge we gained and I would say the whole experience was more than worth the time and money spent. We can't wait to head back!

I had my first-ever experience at Smokin' Barrel, and it was honestly unforgettable. I went in not knowing what to expect, and what I walked away with was way more than just learning how to shoot, it was a full-body, emotional experience. My very first shot moved through my entire nervous system and brought me to tears, in a good way. It felt like a release, like something shifted inside me. Before getting on the range, I completed a one-hour training, and I was paired with Don as my instructor. He was excellent, patient, knowledgeable, and very grounded in the way he teaches. He made me feel safe, prepared, and confident every step of the way. You can tell he truly knows what he's doing and takes pride in it. What stood out to me most was how natural and aligned the whole experience felt, from being paired with Don to the way the training unfolded. It didn't feel random; it felt meant to be. I'm really grateful for the experience and would absolutely recommend Smokin' Barrel, especially for first-timers.

After several training sessions with Don, i've been able to consistently put shots on target!

As someone totally new to firearms, walking into a gun shop and range for the first time was a little intimidating--but Smokin' Barrel completely changed that for us. From the moment my wife and I walked in, the staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and--most importantly--knowledgeable. They treated me with respect and genuine kindness, never once talking down to me or brushing off my beginner questions. Instead, they patiently walked me through everything I needed to know, made great recommendations, and created an atmosphere that felt supportive and safe. A huge shoutout to Don, our training instructor--this man is truly one of a kind! Don combines deep expertise with patience and persistence in a way that's rare to find. He meets you where you're at and helps guide you forward with confidence. No pressure, no ego--just clear, encouraging instruction that makes you believe you can do this. Whether you're nervous, uncertain, or just starting from scratch, Don has a way of breaking things down and giving you the tools to improve. With the right amount of time and practice, there's no doubt he'll help you hit your goals. If you're new to firearms or just looking for a top-tier experience, Smokin' Barrel is where you want to be. Friendly staff, excellent training, and a judgment-free environment that's built for learning and growing and most importantly, fun! I'm beyond grateful I found this place and that we have become regulars!

I've been on a mission lately--introducing friends who've never touched a firearm into responsible, confident gun enthusiasts. Given that I'd never visited any gun ranges in the Los Angeles County or Ventura County area, I spent some time researching 'the right spot.' My criteria was simple: I wanted a modern, clean, and welcoming facility--not some dingy, sketchy place that would scare my newbie friends away. Even though it was tempting to pick cheaper alternatives, something about Smokin' Barrel stood out, and I'm genuinely glad it did. When I first walked in with my friend, the atmosphere immediately gave off a state-of-the-art vibe. Sure, I expected to spend a bit more here because of that, but honestly, quality always costs a little extra, and Smokin' Barrel more than justified it. Things started out okay with the typical check-in and waiver procedures, but my friend became super nervous as soon as we stepped into the shooting area. Between the louder calibers, rifles, and shotguns firing away, my friend nearly reached their breaking point, to the extent they wanted to bail on the whole experience. That's when Mark, the Range Safety Officer, stepped up in a major way. Observant and thoughtful, Mark suggested we scale down from my 9mm to a smaller caliber like a .22 and even suggested red dot sights to ease my friend into the experience. Brilliant move--honestly hadn't crossed my mind, even with my military background. Mark didn't just stop there. He took the extra step, patiently giving my friend a mini-lesson on firearm basics, safety, and proper handling that quickly transformed their fear into genuine confidence. By the end of our session, my friend was accurately placing rounds on target and smiling from ear to ear. The positive energy at Smokin' Barrel didn't end with the staff. Another woman at the range came up and handed my friend a keychain, sharing words of encouragement and empowerment--exactly the kind of community vibe that transforms first-timers into lifelong enthusiasts. After our range session, I browsed around the shop, picking up a gun cleaning kit. Tony from the sales team matched Mark's professionalism and good vibes, even going the extra mile by applying their upcoming 4th of July sale discount early. It was a small gesture but spoke volumes about their customer-first approach. Bottom line, this place is about more than firearms--it's about community, confidence, and care. I might not always be able to swing the premium prices regularly, but Smokin' Barrel will definitely be my go-to recommendation for anyone needing firearms expertise, training, gear, or just an outstanding first-time experience. Huge thanks to Mark, Tony, and the entire Smokin' Barrel team for making our visit one to remember. Highly recommend!

Great range for shooting all types of guns, but only thing is that there is no gunsmith there, but otherwise it's the best range around.

Do you offer training classes for concealed carry permit? If so, how much is the program? Thank you.

Reach out the Brian at MV Tactical. They can help.

Do you guys do ammo transfers from online purchases like GunBroker? And if so, what's the cost?

We do not offer ammo transfers due to the daily volume of shipments. Please get in touch with the store to see if we can match the price you are looking for. Thanks

Do you know if they allow you to shoot a shotgun?

    Yes, only slugs, no buckshot.

How far back do the targets go? 50yards at least?

    25 yards

Do you sell 12 and 20 gauge ammunition? I am interested in purchasing several cases of each.

Do you allow 5.56/.223 on the range?

I've shot both at the range. No issues.

Can you go shooting alone or do you have to bring a friend with you?

    You can go solo.

Is there a max number of people allowed in a group during covid?

Hello I wanted to purchase a hand gun for the first how do I set that up?

Just go in. They will help you out. Bring two forms of identification.

Do they provide a basic gun safety and shooting class? Also how much$ could not find it on their web site.

They do, by appointment. It was ~$400 for 90 minutes (wife and I) with a private instructor/former sheriff from a nearby town. Best investment we have ever made.

I own my own handgun and would like to come test it out. Is there anything I should be aware of/be prepared for walking into this place as a first time customer?…

You will need to fill out a disclaimer form on an iPad, hand your drivers license over, and use range ammo. Must have eye and ear protection.

Can you bring your own ammo to fire on the range?

Yep! They have some restrictions but standard FMJ ammo is fine.

    Do they provide shooting lessons?

Yep! They have an awesome instructor by the name of Robert Arabian that comes in and conducts classes at every skill level. The range safety officers are also extremely helpful with beginners and will make you feel safe, confident and comfortable.

So the cost is $20/hr/person per lane, anyone know how much it costs to rent a pistol/handgun? Will there be any additional fee if I am shooting it for the first time? Thanks!

There are rental fees for the weapon(s) you choose as well.. there is a variety to choose from.

It is a breakdown in mandatory record‑keeping and transfer procedures, the very safeguards designed to prevent misidentification, theft, and unlawful possession. Confusing two serialized firearms of different calibers underscores a serious lapse in inventory control. Any FFL that mishandles serialized inventory in this way is demonstrating a dangerous disregard for regulatory obligations. They do not understand all gun laws and there for make their customer jump through more legal hoops than need be. I don't expect every customer to know the laws so they are unaware VC is slightly incompetent. I even pointed out their error but they just raised their voices and yelled at me. In California , when buying a rifle, it is NOT necessary to show two forms of ID. If you have a California True ID (Golden Bear in corner with no restrictions) that is all you need. They insisted I needed more. Here's the law: Only if you have restrictions or are purchasing a hand gun or it's a PO box address etc... is a secondary ID proving address required). But they are so arrogant and elitist blow-hards they wouldn't even turn the page on the form that they used as their proof showing me. I said on the first page it states NO secondary ID required for rifles. But he refused to even look at the 1st page and read where it clearly states the secondary ID rule is ONLY for hand gun sales. So lazy. So every single rifle purchaser that had a California DL True ID with no restrictions and their address correct on the iD was and is made to show a secondary ID. Completely unnecessary so I asked them to send my "receiver(rifle) to their competitor down the street who is up on the law. And they're cheaper too (and very friendly with no attitude. VC waste their customer's time making them jump through hoops needlessly and are very argumentative when you show them the law. Shame. Nope. I rather deal with the competent FFL guys down the street. My history: Gun collector of 50 years with over 350 purchases over a lifetime. I was an FFL myself and I am very familiar with the laws. Most gun buyers will assume their FFL knows the laws. Fact: Not all ffl's understand things they read and need it explained to them. We're all human. But when they get arrogant, loud and insistent by refusing to acknowledge they misread their own DOJ documents in front of them....that's just a ignorance and incompetence. These are guys I would think should not be doing their own Taxes let alone filling out gun transfers.
