    Beef and Lamb Gyro Pita
    Mel T.

Tried Smyrna out for the first time, after driving past it a couple of times. Called for a pickup order at around 7 PM on a Saturday. I ordered two Beef and Lamb Gyro XL Platters (beef and lamb gyro (double meat), rice, pita, salad, french fries, hummus, tzatziki and the Beef and Lamb Gyro Pita (beef and lamb, lettuce, tomato, onion, french fries, tzatziki). I really, really wanted to like this place. They give generous portions and the food is very fairly priced. And it actually tasted pretty good. Until I found a hair in one of my last bites of pita. I understand this happens but it is just such a turn off and pet peeve of mine. Up until then, I was enjoying my pita. It had lots of meat, and even had French fries inside (what a nice touch!). But it is very oily so it's a cheat meal. Any lettuce that was inside the pita had soaked up all the oil into a soggy mess. Also brings me to my next point - best to eat it immediately because the sauce and oil does make the pita soggy. However, I would not recommend dining in because they do not have AC - even on a 90 degree day. That did make me wonder about the food safety in such high temperatures. There's also a credit card fee, so keep that in mind. I'm not sure if I'll be back because of the hair. The food was good but not so good that I couldn't find a hairless version of it somewhere else.

The food is bangin! And the prices are affordable. The hummus, babaganoush , and the beef and lamb platter were so fresh and flavorful!

I had been meaning to visit Smyrna Gyro since it's close to home. I finally took a walk over on a sunny afternoon. It was nice out, so we took seats at the picnic table they had outside. The waitress/owner? brought us menus and took our order shortly after. I went with the lamb and beef gyro with fries and a Greek salad. It comes with a can of soda, and it was only $12.99! The Greek salad was amazing. It was very substantial, with few leafy vegetables, but plenty of olives, bell pepper, onions, tomato and feta. The gyro was great. It was stuffed with a well seasoned gyro meat, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and tzatziki. They were also nice enough to give us some complimentary lemonade. It was probably the best lemonade I've had. Definitely a good spot for a quick gyro.

I have lived in Wallington for 2 years and kept wanting to try this place. It was a rainy Saturday and I was greeted by a lovely woman who smiled and jumped to take my order. The place is painted in blue and white with lacey curtains. Makes you feel like you're in your Grandmothers kitchen. I ordered the beef and lamb gyro platter but with Greek fries and the gyro sandwich platter. The food was prepared as I waited and the smells from the kitchen were amazing. Again the place is small but cozy and very clean. Everything was so flavorful and delicious and the portion was HUGE! You won't be disappointed!

Sofia's is absolutely among those quality restaurants that should be considered the pride and lifeblood of Hasbrouck Heights. Easily one of the nicest and most family oriented Greek spots I've been to in recent memory. I strongly encourage anyone in the area to give it a shot and bring a group to dine in. The only negative I'd say is that the price can be a little over the top for some of the meal items, however, given the ambiance, the service, the quality and the experiences I've had there, it's a fair price. From cooking to salad dressings, Greek olive oil made from lemon, basil, and oregano is their liquid gold. Located on a busy Boulevard in the heart of Hasbrouck Heights, I finally got the opportunity to stop in at this BYOB family-owned/operated establishment. Upon entering for lunch after 4 years, Sofia's Mediterranean Grill, named after the owner's mom, I was greeted by the staff. I got a booth, immediately knowing how they get crowded. The inside evoked a cozy and warm vibe with Greek music playing throughout. Outdoor dining is available, weather permitting. Their menu features an array of traditional Mediterranean dishes, offering a variety of soups, appetizers, salads, sandwiches, meats from the grill, seafood cooked various ways, and entrees cooked from the oven. I decided on the Greek salad with grilled chicken. The food was authentic, fresh using the finest ingredients, delicious, and prepared simply, which is exactly what I was looking for. The portion was healthy. The service is always friendly and welcoming. I got to connect with the owner, Nick, a fellow Astorian, to catch up about the old neighborhood. The price was reasonable. If one's craving the vibrant flavors of the Mediterranean, then look no further. One doesn't need to book a flight to Greece to enjoy authentic meals.

Crankiness aside... the fam decided to step outside of our comfort zone and try Persian food for the very first time. The restaurant - looks great inside (I've passed this place countless times over the years and don't think I even peeked inside). The gal behind the counter - could not be any nicer. The food - delicious, packed with flavor. My kids were baffled how proteins they're used to eating (beef, chicken) could taste so differently thanks to unique spices and whatnot. The meal came to about $20 per person (no drinks, just the entrée) and while the 'Kabob Koobideh' was a generous portion, the falafel sandwich (for $15) is wildly overpriced (it's about $10 from Greek Town right across the street, never mind about $8 from Mamoun's just about two minutes away over on Rt. 17N). Happy to have tried it, would come back (while grumbling about the cost under my breath because I'm a crabby old man).

The rice was plain, which was okay for me. The onions definitely made up for it to combine it together. To top it off I also got fried calamari, it was a little bit chewy overall still had flavor to it. My go to drink was a mint lemonade that they make it into a slushie. I never had a mint lemonade so the taste to the drink was new to me but I loved it! You could bring your own liquor becusse they do not sell that. Overall amazing place for a quick lunch or dinner!

Turkish cuisine is a unique combination of flavors, spices, and herbs developed over thousands of years, influenced by the Central Asian nomads and Arabic, Persian, Italian, French, and Eastern European cultures. While New York has some great Turkish food if one knows where to look, most of it leaves some room for improvement. Could Jersey be better? The town of Carlstadt has mainly residential private homes, with a spattering of condos and garden apartments. The main shopping area is all of about three blocks long on both sides of the street. Translated from the Turkish language, meaning sultan, we have come to this family-owned/family-run establishment located on Hackensack Street since 2006 for Saturday dinner. The reservation was easily made by Google Assistant. Upon entering this hidden gem called Hünkar Restaurant as first-timers, my partner, our friends, and I were greeted by the staff inside a cozy room, where ethnic pictures and decorations as well as the music all add to the vibe. A great view of the NYC skyline is visible from their enclosed back patio. Their menu features Mediterranean and Turkish cuisine with a modern twist and serves alcohol. As an appetizer, we decided on the Kibbeh (Icli Kofte), Calamari (Kalamar), and Cigarette Borek (Sigara Boregi). For our main meal, we opted for Chicken Saute (Taouk Sote), Shrimp Kebab, Lamb Shish Kebab (Kuzu Sis Kebab), and Chicken Shish Kebab (Tavuk Kebab). All Kebab meal accompanied by rice, char-grilled tomatoes, peppers, and a small salad. Warm, fluffy pida bread with a crisp crust started our meal. Every dish bursts with authentic flavor and is beautifully presented, from the fact that Turkish families from all over the area eat here. The staff is warm, welcoming, and very professional; our server was Akincan "John," the owners' son. The price was comparable to the area with the right portion. We can recommend this place.
