Now that the Downtown Ventura outpost of venerable chain Snapper Jack's is closed, my visit to the Thousand Oaks location last weekend completed the set for me. Three shiny taco shacks to compare. And compare I will. This is definitely my least favorite. It has similar strip-mall vibes to its Camarillo cousin, but that location feels majestic and comfortable, with a large seating area both inside and outside. Here, the inside feels cramped, and the outside feels like the outdoor seating at an old-school Burger King, and that's not a good thing. I think this place was going for the feel of the Ventura location, which is also smaller than Camarillo, but Ventura feels just right, and its outdoor seating is inviting. It doesn't help that I came here from the 23 rather than from the 101, so I don't know how this location fits into the flow of what I understand of life and business and shopping and dining in Thousand Oaks. It was definitely busy when I came, and despite my not liking this particular location, I'm glad the business is doing well. I didn't enjoy my potato tacos as much as I did last time. There was too much special sauce, and it was more watery than I remember. Also, the "combo" is a Mexican-restaurant combo, not a fast-food-place combo, so it includes rice and beans but not a drink. Chalk it up to 2026 or whatever, but this place feels very overpriced now. The people working here were kind and efficient. In general, I think this local chain is very well managed, because all the employees I've ever dealt with at all three locations on maybe a half-dozen total visits have been stellar. They keep the inside very clean, including the bathrooms, which are spotless. When I was leaving, I wanted to fill my water bottle with ice, but I didn't want them to think I was stealing soda, so I asked the woman who had taken my order whether that was all right. She said sure and thanked me for asking. Apparently, some teenagers had been bringing in their own cups and sneaking soda when they thought the employees weren't looking. read more

I've been going to Snapper Jacks for years now and go at least once a week. I've tried a lot on their menu and have enjoyed everything. Some of my favorite menu items are the bean and cheese burrito sauce and you have to order it wet. The red sauce they put on top is very flavorful and not spicy, which is great. I also love the shrimp tacos. The grilled or battered shrimp are both good choices and you have to try the crispy flour tortilla for the shrimp tacos. It's an amazing combo with shack sauce, cabbage and a plentiful amount of jack cheese. You also can't miss out on the cinnamon sugar chips! About $4 for a huge bag filled! Enough for a family or multiple people. The manager always remembers us and is very friendly. The service is consistently good and it's a cute place with surfing memorabilia and a surfing movie always playing on the tv. read more

My wife and I have tried two locations thus far! After spending time at both the Ventura and the Thousand Oaks spots. Their food is good .. but not impressive. Thus far, we have had the battered fish tacos, the shrimp taco, the grilled steak taco, both flavours of taquitos, and the grilled chicken burrito between both of our visits. All of the fish and protein is fresh and cooked well with great texture. The seasoning of the food, in our opinion, could use a little love. Sometimes it might just come down to the sauce and the quantity. The salsa helped a little. Our guacamole was good, as was the rice. While the food was really fresh, I didn't enjoy the Cancun burrito too much. Personally it felt too mushy so the texture was off putting, but it was undeniably fresh! Just not my thing. But it was huge too! Shared it among 3 people and we still had some saved some for later. Snapper Jacks is always a hit! Get the Jacks combo with 2 crispy (ALWAYS get crispy) tacos (we love all of them: steak, chicken and potato!) and side or rice, beans and chips. Shrimp is $1 extra, well seasoned, and many pieces! Their chips are warm and really light. The salsa bar is clean. Try the avocado and "brown sauce"! Lol My friend's rice, veggies and avocado entree was very salty (I agree) and had an unexpected curry taste. She mentioned this and they gave her a container of rice. We live very close to Snapper Jack's in Thousand Oaks and have done pick-up from there many times and have been perfectly satisfied with the food. However, our most recent order was incorrect and I was missing a taco from my taco combo. When I called to complain the manager offered to comp me a taco on my next visit. I told him that was unacceptable and that I would like a partial credit back on my credit card. I apparently asked for the moon because no one there had any idea how to do that and kept trying to get me to call Door Dash. I explained that I should not have to do the work nor was there any mention of Door Dash on my order. He basically told me that no one there had any idea how to process a credit back to me. It's unfortunate but I won't be giving Snapper Jack's any business for a very long time. Lesson learned. Always check your order before leaving the restaurant. read more

Boy oh boy, where do I begin? First off, the second I walked into the establishment, I was very politely greeted. I was a first timer, but when I walked in I felt like a regular. It was if I had already had a connection with the workers. Specifically, Cade and Luke and Julia were very helpful in helping me choose what to eat. They then swiftly prepared my food and handed it to me immediately. Impeccable service. I noticed that I did not receive any napkins so Cade, taking notice of this, immediately got me a napkin without me having to ask. Overall, the food is incredible and the service is beyond amazing. Good food, good staff, all around really good place. I seem to always end up here when I can't think of where else to go, only to come away wondering why I don't remember to make this a destination. I stick with the Jack's burrito, which is big enough to split and still satisfy my taco shack itch. Local Ventura County restaurant group of four locations still bringing the sunny flavors of "Cal-Mex" beachy-cooking. Stopped in to pick up our New Year's Eve dinner, after shopping in Conejo Valley Plaza. The cashiers are still friendly, and the kitchen working rapidly to pull orders together. During the Coronavirus restrictions, they have shut down all their indoor dining tables. Also, instead of guests getting their own salsa bar condiments, the cashiers ask which options you'd like, and they add it to your order in small to-go containers. Speaking of to-go - that's always been a feature of their business, so they know what they're doing in that regard. I love that they have options like grilled or fried fish, making for healthier options of preparation. They do have salads, leaving aside tortillas, also. My personal preference would be for black beans, versus pinto, but alas, no frijoles negros at Snapper Jack's. Whole pinto beans are an option, as are refried beans. With so many restaurants floundering, I'm happy to support Snapper Jack's lighter style of cooking to fuel you, and not weigh you down. Cheers! read more

Went in tonight and was disappointed. I've always loved this place! Food was good as usual, but place was dirty and workers inattentive. Salsa cups on the ground, dirty table tops, and four workers hanging out and laughing near the kitchen /salsa bar the entire time. Too many workers standing around and not enough work being done. I had the Captain Jack combo with a grilled shrimp crunchy taco, a fried fish crunchy taco, and had to try the potato taco. Wife had a chicken fajita burrito and a shrimp crunchy taco. Salsa bar was nice but needed to be filled- the bad: wife picked up the shrimp taco and the bottom of the shell broke and everything fell out- otherwise, the food wasn't bad. Unbearably salty. We had to throw away. Yes, delicious -- because any food will taste delicious if you put a ton of salty sauce on it. I have to say, the shredded chicken was generous in the burrito. You'll love it if you like your food super salty. People are sweet and place is clean. Just can't eat the food. I went into Snapper Jacks tonight to get a mini Jack combo as usual and Nathan and Mia were there.. they were very happy and hospitable and treated me with so much respect and every time I go in there and I see them Nathan is very professional and Mia is always smiling and happy to see her customers I work a lot of hours and don't have a lot of time during the day to eat so when I get off work at night, I look forward to SJs two or three nights a week and when they are there, they make my visit memorable. I heard about Snapper Jack's from some of my local friends. I had to try this franchise out coming from Ventura County! I'm a big fan of fish tacos so I ordered the Jack's Combo which comes with two tacos, beans, rice and chips. You can order two different tacos and have them prepared differently which I thought was great if you'd like to try different meats. I went with two fish tacos, one with just flour and the other with their infamous fried tacos. I'm a sucker for "simple" and the fried taco just didn't do it for me. Although, pro-tip their shack sauce makes everything great again. I enjoyed the fish tacos but I definitely prefer the old school way in a flour/corn tortilla. They have a ton of different salsas which are pretty yummy, but like I said, the shack sauce can quickly turn you into an addict. The prices are pretty fair with the amount of food they serve. This place is located in a pretty busy plaza and parking can be tricky during the lunch rush. They have a small indoor dining room and also a really nice patio area! I haven't tried their other items so I'll definitely be back to give it another go. read more
