A first-time visit to this local favorite. I was a bit apprehensive about it, and I had two other places in consideration, those being The Brick House and The Wooden Spoon. But I decided to give it a try. So, first impressions are that it has very dated decor, which gives it a quaint country feel and the other being a place that only locals will go because they went to school with the owner 50 years ago. I ordered the Meat Lovers Omelet with a side of grits and tomatoes and a coffee. The coffee was good and hot. And they came by several times to refill it. After a few minutes, my order came out nice and hot. The omelet reminded me a lot of the omelets we'd get in the Army. This omelet was packed with sausage, ham, and bacon. I believe they used cheddar cheese, too. I don't recall a lot of cheese, though. The grits were done right, smooth and creamy. I was impressed with the tomatoes. They actually tasted like they should! I left there satisfied and on the verge of being too full. The feeling lasted well past lunchtime. So the reason for the mediocre score. Well, it wasn't a spectacular meal or experience. I was only 1 of 4 guests eating there. I compare this with other places I've been and it isn't someplace I left thinking "I can't wait to try it again." I will, in fairness, try it again. Back in Plant City again, I decided to check another diner off my visit list. Snellgroves is located in downtown and is rather easy to find, plenty of free parking available. I lucked out with a space right in front. They were still serving breakfast when I arrived, and I cannot resist that. It doesn't look like much from the outside, honestly, but it's absolutely cowboy-kitsch on the inside. Like the 1980s trend of copying the 1950s. I loved it. Very homey and comforting. I was told to sit where I wanted, so I chose a booth. The whole place was very clean (including the Cowgirl's bath/Room). Both of the ladies who waited on me were very lovely and pleasant. The coffee was excellent. Yes, I love that fancy stuff, but my heart lies with that wonderful plain old cup of diner coffee. Snellgroves has it. I had two cups. Yum. They have a breakfast menu with all the basics. I chose a bacon & cheese omelette, with hash browns and a biscuit. Breakfast came out quick, hot and fresh. The omelette was perfect. Very little brown on the egg, cooked nicely. Good cheese mixture and nice bacon. Loved the hash browns. Nice crunch but not too over-cooked, just right. The biscuit, super light and fluffy; was split, buttered and grilled. Nice touch. I love diners like this. You expect a certain something and they deliver - and Snellgroves did just that. We were encouraged by a friend to see if Snellgrove's was worth the money. No. We both ordered fried catfish-which came batter fried and both it and the fries were very greasy. I ordered lima beans which were overcooked. We both got salad bar which an added $3 to both our bills. Only 9 or 10 things on bar including salad dressings. When I asked for extra slaw I was told they were out and wouldn't have any more for the day. The waitress was nice-the one that took care of us. The shrimp I was served were the small frozen bag shrimp, microwaved then fried in bad oil! The waitress had just walked into her shift and decided to tend to our table all frazzled (assuming she was late) and without knowing any of the specials. After running back and forth a couple times, she finally told us the specials but I'm sure she forgot an item or two. All entrees come with a soup or salad...she just assumed we were all getting salad so when I said I wanted to know the soups, she said "you didn't tell me that earlier" snarkly. Mind you, its not like she had to take back a made salad since it was self-serve so I don't know what her problem was. Poor customer service. 2. Food- 2/5. Their "salad bar" was super basic, didn't even have croutons or a variety of dressings to pick from. Lettuce looked a couple days old as well. Mac & cheese was basic. Fried tilapia had no flavor. Buffalo chicken tenders was probably the best thing on the menu. Sweet tea was refreshing. 3. Environment/Location- 5/5. We were seated by someone else promptly at a clean table by the window. Located in downtown historic Plant City with ample parking and not much of a rush. Definitely a "diner" type of setting but also very family friendly. This was the first "restaurant" we've ate at in Plant City and it was a clear disappointment. Breakfast at Snellgroves is consistently good! My favorite is their Cuban breakfast sandwiches. Everything is served hot and fresh. The owners are friendly and work extremely hard. Lots of space for large groups of family or friends, or bar seating for individual diners. Clean and rustic, this is a fun place to eat while shopping in Downtown Plant City - there's a City parking lot across the street or park curbside. Give them a try! read more

Beside the friendly and obviously overwhelmed staff and what I would presume to be near expired salad bar I had a somewhat decent meal. I do think my grandfather enjoyed it more considering he no longer has the ability to taste. I don't know what I prefer the watery soup or the eggs that were somehow harder then the crackers I used to add any sort of flavor to my "meal". Either way won't be going back. We are strong mom and pop restaurant goers but this one we will not return to again. We typically share our meal but the pork chops were heavy on the salt the okra was not bad. I would go back again for the Chicken Fried Chicken alone! Snellgrove's has a daily menu. Many of the menu items are available every day, such as my beloved CFC, but others rotate in, such as Monday's Chicken and Dumplings. Their vegetables/sides also change daily. I went Tuesday, so my two choices with the CFC were fresh rutabagas and fresh greens (other choices were breaded okra, baby limas and black eyed peas). You also get a trip to the salad bar, which is an interesting trip because there are more prepared salads, like coleslaw, potato salad and some others I did not even recognize, on this tiny bar than actual toppings for your lettuce. Finally, you get a hunk of cornbread. My dinner was $7.99. Everything was fresh and delicious. I added black pepper to my white gravy, and the spicy vinegar from the jar of sport peppers at my table to my greens, and that was all the seasonings I needed. Very casual interior, with a large number of tables and booths. Waitresses were friendly and quick with recommendations and water refills. Parking available on the street. read more

The place is small, but very neat; the atmosphere is nice, welcoming, real southern vibe, staff was rather friendly and helpful. You can see a lot of regulars come in as the servers new them by name. The meat portion was too small for the price, I hate to say it. If I'm paying 8.99$ a meal, I'd like to see some meat on my plate! Granted, it did come with soup or salad and 2 veggies, so if you take all that into account, it is a lot of food for the money. My husband got fried chicken with gravy entree, which was to die for, and he had a good size portion. I'm just saying.. The chicken and veggie soup was really good, by the way, just my type, clear broth, with lots of flavorful veggies and chicken. We got the beef hot dog for my daughter, which was huuuuge and very tasty, juicy and beefy, on a delicious butted smothered and toasted bun. And now we move on to the desert. We got a slice of homemade strawberry layer cake to share.. What can I say, they know how to make a grown woman cry.. I'm sad just thinking about it now, as it's gone.. All gone.. This is my wife's and my favorite breakfast place in town. We typically eat there at least once a week (usually breakfast, but lunch and dinner is good too.). We have never had a bad meal here. The staff is almost always warm and friendly, despite usually being swamped with customers. And it's the best coffee in town. Can't beat the deal you get. read more

We are new to the area and decided to try Snellgroves for lunch. We were seated quickly and reading the menu set up by days. We ordered pressed Cubans and cheeseburger with fries. The Cubans were pretty good along with the French fries. The waitress on the other hand was a bit older and not very friendly. The worst part was she licked her fingers after she cut a piece of cake and put on a plate to serve, not once but twice. Would have been a three star but now a one. There's always a first for everything...and this is my first one star review. Let me start off by saying that Snellgroves wasn't my first pick when it came to lunch today. I was trying to decide between a few places in Plant City, most of which I got pretty excited about. It wasn't until I clicked on the actual Yelp profile that I noticed that almost everything, and yes I mean everything, in Plant City is closed on Sunday. With this new added situation placed into the mix, my ONLY resort was to go to Snellgroves since it's the only location that is open on Sunday in Downtown Plant City. When you first walk in, it seems like a nice, homey mom and pop shop southern diner. Welp...you're wrong. It's pretty much the worst eating establishment I've ever set foot in. The service was horrendous. I asked for a refill for water half way into the meal...and by the end of the meal, still an empty cup of water. The servers don't really seem invested in doing anything besides talking to one another....I give. Let's dive into the food. The salad bar was disgusting. I'm not sure if there's any other way to put it. I first decided to go to the salad bar instead of getting the soup. Upon closer inspection of the items in the bar, most of them look like they've been sitting there for weeks, aging and withering away. Half of the ingredients seriously seemed inedible. I quickly asked our waitress to change back to the soup because God knows how long I would be throwing up after eating something from that hodgepodge of items they call a "salad bar". I would like to talk about my actual entree next, but it took a good hour to come out. I mean, it's reasonable for food to come out late if the diner is busy...but it wasn't. For some random reason, they just decided to let our food sit there for an hour AFTER ordering and have us starve at our table. When I finally received my food, after waiting a lifetime and a half, everything was cold. No joke, my mac n cheese felt like it just came out of the fridge. The fried okra, which needs to be fried in HOT oil, was barely warm to the touch. I'm not exactly sure why they decided to wait that long to bring out my food because it was clear they left it just sitting there for most of the time we were waiting. Being already disappointed, the country fried chicken was an even bigger disappointment. The chicken coating was soggy and it was very difficult to bite into. The only thing that was "decent" was the soup, which was ruined by the oil-drenched bread that accompanied it. The worst part was they don't even pay for their Pandora station. In the middle of lunch, we were suddenly bombarded with commercials...this must be a joke. Snellgrove's serves classic American Southern food, the sort of place Cracker Barrel would like you to think exists only in memory. It's got a salad bar, and nearly half of it is prepared mayonnaise-based salads like macaroni salad and cole slaw. Don't be shy! Some of them are salads you might never have heard of before, like sweet-pea salad and kidney-bean salad, and they're delicious. Vegetarians, keep in mind that the greens are cooked traditionally, with lots of meaty chunks. The fried okra was delicious and the macaroni and cheese was no slouch either. If you use a wheelchair, be aware that you will never fit through the narrow doorway and twisty route to the men's room. Service was friendly and laid-back; when we wanted something, we'd have a smiling server at your table in a few seconds, and when we didn't want anything, the servers were cleaning up tables and enjoying each other's conversation about local affairs. Mostly home cooking, both meals were very good, the portion sizes were average until you realize you get salad bar, 2 sides, a main entree and dinners roll or cornbread.
