Imagine, if you would, a marriage between fried rice, duck, and a sunny-side egg on top that was blessed by awesomeness, and you have the appetizer that conquers all other appetizers! Absolutely delicious and arguably the best fried rice I've ever had! Considering that it is not an Asian restaurant, that's saying a lot! UPDATE: So I returned the next Sunday to catch Brunch. I was the ONLY customer there and chose to sit outside since it was a pretty and cool day. I ordered the Fried Chicken which is 2 amazingly crusted chicken thighs with honey and bacon drizzled over them and a sticky bun on the side. I will say $15 is a bit much to pay for 2 pieces of fried chicken but I let it slide off the fact that the batter was so good and crispy. I had a wonderful server name Amber who let me try some other pastries on the menu since I'm not a sticky bun fan. I haven't anything bad here yet. I was the only person in the dining room. Came in right after brunch hours was over (my mistake) on a late Sunday afternoon. I realized I haven't been to SOB since Covid began so their menu has changed. I was informed the East Menu was different from the Downtown menu but they aren't. I decided on my tried and true General Tso Cauliflower and the Fried Chicken bao buns. I will say the crust on the fried chicken was great. I would have loved a dish with the chicken... like the former chicken and waffle that was once on the menu. It's fine. If I just judge this location, it's just okay. You'll get your fill if you like the items on the menu. The food doesn't feel special and it also feels like it's gone up in price. Mimosas at brunch were unfortunately on the warm side. Most things I've had here were underwhelming. A shame cause SOB has been a staple for a while. The redesign of the dining room is nice. On the recommendation of a friend, we tried SOB East. It was a Saturday and we did not have a reservation, so we sat in the bar area. Our Server was one of the bartenders, listed on the receipt as PM B,, had a stylish waxed/curled mustache and he was OUTSTANDING!!! The food was EXCEPTIONAL! My wife ordered the Duck Fried Rice appetizer. That serving was large enough to be a full meal and it was comparable to a Duck Confetti Fried Rice we enjoyed at Iron Chef Morimoto's restaurant in Napa, CA. My dish was the Blacked Catfish severed over an okra and corn succotash with andouille sausage and a spicy crawfish cream sauce. The fish was great, but that succotash was ADDICTIVE!!! We also shared their Jack and Coke Bread Pudding and it was AWESOME! As a native of New Orleans, I was VERY Impressed with SOB's renderings of Cajun/Creole inspired dishes. I thought this place was great. A friend had suggested I give it a try. We went to lunch here today and were promptly greeted. We were seated at a nice table that had full view of the kitchen which must be the new thing. The restaurant is very nice and modern. I had the cedar plank salmon (it doesn't get served on a plank of cedar). It was tasty, with a miso honey glaze and fingerling potatoes. I would eat it again. One of my coworkers got a curry chicken bowl and said it was awesome. My other coworker got poutine appetizer for their lunch and said they'd order it again. While none of us had the burger, I will say it looked pretty amazing. I will hopefully get to come back and try some more of the menu in the future. read more

Visited SOB EAST this past weekend. The duck fried rice wasn't what I expected. The egg came out on the rice sunny side up. I don't eat raw eggs but they happily took it back and scrambled my egg. Once it came back out it looked great but the taste wasn't. It was missing something and seemed to have cinnamon in it. I also ordered the blackened catfish and substituted the side for the Gouda Mac & cheese. The catfish was good but the Mac & Cheese was missing something as well. It was unseasoned. I could only taste noodles! My cousins had the steak rolls and short ribs, steak rolls were ok, missing something as well but the short ribs were good. The lemon drops with Tito's were awesome! Last night was our first time at SOB East and it was amazing! Great food and great service. I high recommend trying it out! Here is my overall impression: When we first arrived, I was a little nervous because of the color scheme in the main dining room. It's very bright with yellow colors and a spacey themed blue carpet. The glass wall and open kitchen is beautiful, but other elements made me think of a hip Chuck E. Cheese. However, as the waitress took our order and drinks started to arrive, my experience was completely different from my expectations. The menu is small but their options are all so unique. Every cocktail we tried was on point, appetizers were hot and delicious, the Hawaiian glazed ribeye was perfectly cooked, and the whiskey bread pudding was the icing on the cake! My only regret is that we couldn't try more. We will definitely be going back to try some addition cocktails, appetizers, and entrees! The service from Julie during our first visit is what brought us back again. Julie did not disappoint she didn't miss a beat from getting every order correct to making sure every one of our needs were met. The secret sauce for this restaurant is the food and Julie. The food was positively amazing, I had the Duck Patty Melt and it was delicious and unique. Carlos was our bartender and server, he made my wife a drink called "Weekend at Bernie's" which was amazing. He was knowledgeable about the entire menu, was extremely friendly and provided us with exceptional customer service. SOB is an amazing place, with a unique gourmet menu at affordable prices. Went back and tried their Sunday brunch! Another excellent meal!! The dining room is now open and was almost full by noon. They still have a few outdoor tables that are covered, but there isn't really a "patio area". I got the breakfast nachos. I've never seen a place fo breakfast nachos, so I had to try. Scrambled egg and chorizo with melted cheese and pico de gallo. So good! I thought the nachos could get soft with all of that, but they were perfectly crunchy! Great savory option. My friend got the French toast and I tried a little. Omg so sweet and yummy. If you have a sweet tooth or want something to share with a group, definitely recommend. They have a few breakfast cocktails as well on the menu. Also, several of their dinner items/appetizers are also served during brunch. There were only about 5 true brunch items. Much like many others, I was excited that South of Beale decided to expand out and open up another location; that's certainly a good sign, especially in the midst of a pandemic, and we need some more (actual) quality restaurants in the area that aren't large chains with a typical product. So for that, major kudos. In the previous spot where Interim was, SOB also honored an Interim gift card I had from last December (2019), and I was both pleasantly surprised and extremely appreciative. They didn't have to do that. You might think the great ends there, but the food was excellent as well. We ordered for pickup and found the entrees to be both delicious and full sizes. The NY Strip was cooked just as we asked, and that Gouda Mac and Cheese is on. point. The Duck Fried Rice is still insanely good, and I could literally eat it all day; I'm always surprised for some reason about how much duck is actually in it and the excellent spice flavor it has, but I shouldn't be surprised. We came for Sunday Brunch and brought visiting family members. I had made reservations and upon entering I was greeted and we were seated immediately. Our server Jessie was prompt, genuinely friendly and attentive but not hovering. We started with the General Tso's Cauliflower appetizer which was both generous and delicious. Our party of four had the Shrimp and Grits, Huevos Rancheros Hash, Stuffed French Toast and the Chickpea Burger. Every plate was cleaned except for the burger and that was only because there were too many fries for my wife to eat. I even had some of the fries (which were great) and there were still some left. This was my first time trying SOB east or SOB period. I ordered take out and picked it up. The staff was very personable and greeted me immediately . I ordered the 361 salad, the sob burger and fries and the Philly cheesesteak egg rolls. The salad was super small with very little toppings for $19, definitely would not get again. The egg rolls were just okay, I tasted more bell pepper than anything else. But the star of the show was definitely the burger and fries, the meat was very high quality, the bun was so soft and all the veggies were super fresh, the fries were just fries but very good. I loved the burger so much I came back the next day to get it. I definitely would go back just for the burger and try some other things on the menu. read more

We absolutely love this place. The staff is superb and friendly. The food & drink are awesome. We were big fans of Downtown SOB as it was one of the first date spots for my girlfriend and I. She was a downtowner and I'm an East Memphis guy so we had the metro areas covered. We were concerned with the East location because we weren't sure if East Memphis Metro folks would know about it but alas word of mouth spread and the restaurant seems to be doing great. One thing you don't have to worry about, whether there are 5 patrons or 50 patrons, you'll always get excellent service & excellent food. Also got the duck rice and couldn't get enough of it. I got the kimchi rice, could use actually kimchi. It was good, but more of something was needed to really make it spectacular. I've dined here a couple of times. The last time was with my best friend. The drinks are good and the food is good. If you like cauliflower you have to try their appetizer. I got the crab fingers as my meals and it was okay. They were a little overcooked and super salty. Kind of disappointing as I'm a huge crab fan and tend to have to travel to Birmingham or Atlanta for good crab fingers. The service was good. Our waiter was on top of things.
