I grew up in SoCal and lived in the peninsula prior to moving up to Sonoma Co. I'm very particular about my Korean food and found maybe one/two places in Santa Clara that I would give my seal of approval. I was very surprised to try and like Soban, especially here in Petaluma. The menu is limited, but I think it rivals authentic Korean food found in the city or peninsula just the same. My only gripe is the food can take forever. I have gotten takeaway a few times and finally had the opportunity to dine in at Soban. I appreciate this is one of the few authentic Korean restaurants in the North Bay. Sadly a lot of the dishes were lacking. Banchan: Good selection, their kimchi was more mature and sou. I don't love that they charge for refills. Gimmari: was one of the best things we ate at Soban. Crispy on the outside and the noodles on the inside were perfect. Soban Chicken: This was the most disappointing Korean fried chicken I have had in a long time. It was dry and lacked flavor. Pan Fried Mackerel: This was okay. Slightly overcooked but my toddler and I enjoyed it. Kimchi Bibim Guksoo: The noodles were good but the Kimchi again was on the more mature side which made the noodles overly sour. First time ever trying Korean food and I was honestly so impressed. My friend brought me here and I never would've found it on my own since it's tucked away in a strip mall in Petaluma, total hidden gem. The place is small but was packed all night, and people were constantly coming in for takeout, which says a lot. The staff was really friendly and welcoming. Everything we ordered was great, but the standout for me was the seafood pancake. I'd never had anything like it before and it was SO good. I would come back just for that alone. 3.5 stars Good Korean food option for Petaluma, but not among the best I've tried in the broader Bay Area. I imagine this fills a gap for people in the area, but no need to go out of your way to try. The banchan were generous but the execution was mediocre (somehow just not as tasty as other banchan I've had). The seafood pancake was solid, much thicker than usual but very crispy exterior and packed with seafood. The soban chicken reminded me a bit of popcorn chicken, wasn't a huge fan. The bibimbap I found underwhelming, too much rice for me and there was one veggie that I really didn't like the flavor of (couldn't place my finger on wich one), which detracted from the overall dish. I really liked this place. The food was very good. The service was good. The owners were very nice. They've been here for 10 years. Somehow, though, I have never been here. We ordered the Jabchae (glass noodles with veggies), vegetable pancake, and the Galbi. The portions are generous. Before your food comes, each table is presented with 6 small dishes of "condiments/appetizers" (for lack of better words) - kimchi, fish cake, bean sprouts, broccoli and a couple of other tasty items that I couldn't identify. I assume that it's a traditional Korean thing to do but it was nice in any case. The vegetable pancake stood out for me since I'd never had that before. We ordered the Doenjang Jjigae soup, miso soup with fermented tofu and Gamjatang pork neck soup, and both were amazing and so delicious!! I loved the traditional Doenjang Jjigae and appreciated all the pickled veggies appetizers, which come with the meal! My cousin who's spent a year teaching in South Korea had showed me this place . I don't know anything about South Korean cuisine , but the food and comfort and this place hit the spot . I've ordered the bibimpap multiple times , usually with spicy seafood. They bring out pickled vegetables and kimchi which is refreshing . The Soban chicken appetizer. . Tried this spot after hunting for a solid place for good soup on a cold day! I came in on a Friday around 6pm with my family. The place was packed but we had luckily arrived just before a rush that filled up the rest of the list. We were seated within 20-30 minutes after adding our names to the list. Service was friendly and attentive. I ordered the Galbitang and the rest of the party each ordered a different soup. The food took quite awhile to arrive; I figured it was due to how busy the restaurant was. When it did arrive, it came piping hot in a stone pot bowl - which is just what I needed to keep warm. The galbitang was good and hit the spot for me on a cold day. I tried the soft tofu soup and it was a bit too salty for my liking. I also tried the yukgaejang which was good but not as spicy as I thought it would be. Overall, I think Soban is a solid option for the area - considering there aren't many Korean spots close by. read more

The Gimmari was super crunchy and delicious, the jungol was INSANE- full of flavor, and the squid was awesome with a perfect balance of spicy and sweet. Still solid for the area. We've been by a few times for occasions or the occasional soba hankering of my partner. Service has always been friendly and accommodating for us. Water refills and check ins frequent. Flavors are still on point. New things I got to try were the Galbitang, gamjatang, and Yukgaejang. Korean food is relatively new to me but this place killed it. Dishes always come with a little smattering of pickled deliciousness of various sorts. I ordered the dolsot bibimbap with spicy seafood. It is amazing how hot those clay pots get! Don't touch it for sure! The rice gets so crusty on the bottom and all the delicious flavors from the egg, sauce from the meat, and the veggies when you mix it all up is just luscious. I went with my family and everyone tried something different. My guy got the spicy beef soup, as spicy as they make it and surprisingly it wasn't that spicy so I guess tolerance has a lot to do with it. It sure was tasty though and those bowls are HUGE! I can't believe that in the 8 years that I have lived in Santa Rosa I did not discover this place until now. This spot is one of the best you can get for quality Korean food. It's not Korean BBQ but it has the traditional dishes that you would expect and I love it. The overall ambiance is very serene and it was a modern but traditional style. The make without was very kind and seated us promptly with a big smile. He almost handled the entire front of house by himself once it got packed during lunch. Phenomenal job. I love their Galbitang, but just make sure to add an extra side of noodles because they are just that good. It comes out boiling so be careful. Plenty of beef with a decent amount of veggies. The broth was made very well. No additional seasoning was required. Their cold noodle dish, Naengmyeon, was also very delicious. My mom immediately started devouring it so I could not take a photo, but she loved it. Noodles cooked to perfection and the broth didn't require mustard or vinegar. I love when I don't need to do that. I understand that people have different taste buds but it stands out to me when I don't need to add anything to a dish. Their soban chicken was a great Korean version of a chicken Karage but the soy sesame sauce was immaculate. I wish I could take some home. Veggie pancake was huge, crispy, and thick filled with veggies. Enjoyed every single bite even after I took it home since I ordered too much. Love the corn tea. Very earthy and just warms the soul. Solid Korean Food in a Petaluma strip mall. The meal started with the usual selection of pickled vegetables. We then started with the Soban fried chicken appetizer. A solid dish, but one we neglected in favor of the next two that arrived. Next, we tried the "Korean Pancake" with vegetables added, and while it was my first time trying one, I can't imagine much better. It was crispy and savory and a wonderful compliment to our last dish... The Dolsot (stone pot) Bi Bim Bap. Arriving in a hot stone bowl with an egg and shaved beef on top (we choose beef but there are several other protein options) the flavors were perfectly balanced and the quality of the ingredients top notch. We really enjoyed everything we tried and both the service and atmosphere were really nice. Oh, and the AC was great on a hot day. We're definitely going back again soon. read more

I stopped by yesterday evening on a Friday night with my family around 6:00 p.m. and the place was packed! Most tables were filled and there were a few Doordashers standing at the front waiting for orders to be filled. It didn't take long for us to get seated, but they were definitely short-staffed both in the kitchen and the front of the house. Between the five of us dining, we ordered the glass noodles, the fried chicken, a kimchi pancake, a bibimbap with beef, bulgogi, and their cold noodles. We throughly enjoyed the dishes with the exception of the bulgogi, which everyone felt tasted a bit bland was was too dry. The bulgogi that you can get pre-marinated from the Costco in Richmond is a lot more tender and flavorful. Similarly, we thought the fried chicken bites were dry as well. The sauce on the outside helped a bit, but for the thicker pieces, we definitely needed something to dip the chicken in. The staff was really attentive to our table despite how busy the restaurant was and was able to provide us with serving utensils and extra bowls because we were sharing everything family style. If I'm craving Korean food in Petaluma, Soban is not a bad choice. read more

Galbi ribs were sweet marinated in flavor and quite nice. Grill marks apparent. Fairly tender but some tough bites. The banchan was appreciated and I enjoyed the kimchi the most! How is it possible the food gets better every time I come here? Daniel and Sarah have built an amazing following, and I'm glad to see that the place is always crowded! After starting on the banchan we feasted on a kimchee pancake which was amazing - not too spicy but a good kick! Terriffic. I had the japchae with beef, dad had the Soban chicken, daughter had the Japchae with Tofu. Everything comes with rice, salad (great killer salad dressing), and as much of the banchan (kimchee etc) that you want. Just ask for refills. I think my dad is the most frequent patron, he STILL drives up from Novato at least once a week for lunch here, and I really can't blame him! Definitely a five star experience every time. read more

I ordered the cold bibimbap with beef and kimchi pancake (not pictured since it was to go). The bibimbap was delicious! Everything tasted fresh and mixed very well together! Although it was a bit bland at first, when I mixed in the sauce it became flavorful and scrumptious! The egg on top added a rich taste to the mix as well! The kimchi pancakes which I ate at home were good too! They were flavorful, a bit crunchy, and paired VERY well with the sauce. I ordered the seafood pancake and it tasted ever better the this second time around. I tried the hot bimbimbap hot for the first time and now I'm hooked. And I stuck with the corn tea. I keep looking at the lager and I may try that in the future. The place was packed and jumpin' and it took what it took to get the food which was very reasonable. The genuineness of the husband and wife owners creates a very warm welcome, a strong support while dining, and the equivalent of a "y'all come back now, hear!" approach as we paid the bill and left. I'm a rookie when it comes to Korean food other than "grill your own" at table at a place I used to frequent in Oakland. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Sonoma county! When I think of this place the first word that comes to mind is "tasty!" For context, I am vegan, one of my kids is quasi-vegetarian, my father-in-law eats everything, and everyone has plenty of options on the menu. I had tofu with vegetables, which may sound boring to some, and there are versions of tofu with vegetables in many cuisines, but OH MY GOODNESS, I fantasize about the next time I can order this dish it was so delicious--one of the best dishes I have ever had, and I am excited to try more. We had an amazing lunch today! This was the first authentic Korean meal we've had in Sonoma County. The dining room has about 10-11 tables and when we arrived at 12:15, there was only one open table. We were seated as soon as the table was cleaned off. The kind server was handling the entire dining room himself along with taking care of to-go orders and checking people out. As busy as he was, he was so very pleasant and personable. A large group was celebrating a birthday party in the center of the dining room but he was able to handle the entire dining room effortlessly. Our drinks were delivered promptly along with plates and utensils. The little Korean side dishes (bachan) were served with our entrees. We ordered two beef dolsot (hot rice with an assortment of vegetables and fried egg in a sizzling stone pot) and a tofu soup with beef which comes with a bowl of white rice. They give you a raw egg that you can crack yourself and add to the boiling hot tofu soup. My tofu soup, (medium spicy), was incredibly flavorful. I was in love at first sip! My two dining companions loved their dolsot as well. The bachan was a nice assortment of veggies (broccoli, bean sprouts, kimchi, tofu strips, and cucumber). We had a most pleasant and memorable dining experience. The food, service, cozy atmosphere were all top notch. This restaurant is conveniently located right off of hwy 101 and there is a huge parking lot with plenty of parking. read more
