I had been wanting to try to this place out ever since I saw it open up down the street. I live in the Short North so I tend to get excited when new restaurants open up (especially when they are Cameron Mitchell restaurants!). Prior to dining here, I had walked by many evenings on my way to the gym. I saw that there were multiple seating options; a traditional dining area, a bar, tables near the window, and then smaller tables out on an open patio. We came here on a Friday evening around 6:30p. We didn't think it would be that busy, but it was PACKED! We were told that if we wanted to sit inside, they couldn't seat us until after 9pm. Wow! She did offer us to sit at the oyster bar or outside (which no one was doing because it was +90 degrees out). The oyster bar looked like a sad option. You are really just staring at the oyster area the whole time; it's tucked in the back corner. I really didn't want to sit there. I asked my boyfriend if we could try outside since it's open seating and I figured the AC would float over to us from the main dining area. We tried it out and were surprised at how comfortable it was! Although you are outside, you are on the border of being inside, so it's still okay (even given the high temps). Man, I would hate to see their electric bill though! I really loved sitting outside on a Friday night and people watching. It's the perfect location in the Short North to just watch others walk by! Neither of us really wanted a drink but I had seen pics on Yelp of the "Pineapple Dance" drink and it looked refreshing! We ordered one to share; however, instead of being refreshing it was just SOOOO STRONG! I honestly had difficulty drinking it, but since my boyfriend was paying $11 for a drink, I managed to take some sips every now and then. I guess at least you get your money's worth from the liquor, but it was just too much alcohol for me. We also got the guac and chips as an appetizer to start off with. It was pretty good. It actually comes with traditional tortilla chips and "nori chips" which I had never had before. I feel like they had a very seaweed taste to them. They were okay, but I would have preferred traditional tortilla chips. Also, for $9, I don't feel like you get that many chips. We both ended up getting the barbacoa tacos. I had actually been looking for the fish tacos since I saw them on Yelp, but when I asked our waitress, she said that they switched to barbacoa...something about the fish supplier or something? Either way, it ended up working out really well because these tacos were so good!! I loved the tender, juicy barbacoa. To be honest, I don't think I had ever had barbacoa before this. The shell was also perfection- there were two shells, one soft and one more crunchy. It was the perfect combo! It also comes with a side of sweet potatoes. Although I find that an odd side for tacos, they were pretty good! All in all, I am really enjoying this spot and can see it continuing to thrive in the heart of the Short North! My favorite place in Columbus, hands down. High quality seafood and top notch service every single time. I can't think of a better restaurant on High St. that is actually worth the price and delivers in quality and presentation as well as customer service. I feel like usually around the city you get one or the other. Love Del Mar and I'm sure my friends and coworkers are sick of me recommending it but it's seriously so worth it!! Super cute, trendy space. The decor fits the menu too - it's like you're in a semi-vintage oceanliner. Good food. Quite disappointed primarily at the amount of time we spent here. It seems like any new and trendy looking joint in Columbus attracts a lot of people, especially true for Cameron Mitchell restaurants. Anyway, this time we made a reservation for our week night date night. (Notably, We tried once before to come here, but the walk-in wait at 7pm on a Tuesday night was TWO HOURS) Our reservation and online request was honored (for a seat near the open windows - sunny and warm in Columbus in the Spring is what we need and deserve!!!!) I love that they call the draft rose "Summer Water". That's what I opted to have! It's flat, but lovely and pairs well with the seafood. We waited 45 minutes to an hour (depending on if you count from when we sat down or when we ordered) for COLD appetizers. With no word from our server. I'd say this was a disappointment that was hard to fully recover from. Thank goodness my husband is a great date :) Also, I don't think this issue was unique to just us. I snooped around every time I went to the restroom (twice... before we were served any food...) and the restaurant was mostly full, with the majority of tables also not having any food. I wonder if the kitchen just got really backed up this night? When the oysters and salmon poke FINALLY came out, they were accompanied with really tasty tortilla chips and seaweed-ish chips. While the salmon poke was good, it was small... I would opt to go down the street for a salmon poke bowl (an entire meal) for the same price next time and be none the worse. For entrees we had Crispy Skate and the Lobster Roll. Both were really well done, tasty, and rather generous portion sizes. Crispy skate was like a fancy version of fish and chips. Lobster roll was warm and extra buttery. No complaints at all there. Took him awhile, but when our server realized he'd been caught up with other tables/how long we'd been waiting for our food he did start to check back on us more often. Ended up comping the chocolate dessert (nothing too special). I appreciated his effort. The two stars are not to knock CMR, Del Mar, the food, or service. Just our personal overall experience can be accurately summarized by 'Meh. I've experienced better' so two stars is fitting here. ****** Herein concludes the highs and lows of our THREE HOUR dinnertime lol. A lengthy review that truly parallels the length of our dinner. The Short North now has a reputation for good food and fun. So, when I heard about the new Del Mar, I had to see what was up. If you come to the Short you have to offer something special to solidify its place in Columbus's most popular spot. I can say Del Mar delivered. The drinks were very pleasant in my opinion. I got a Pineapple Dance drink. It was complex in its flavors. And it was served in a neat Tiki Cup for good presentation. I also got to try the Smokey the Bear. Which wasn't as good as the Pineapple Dance. But it was a decent drink. First course I got the Curry Clams. The flavor in these were crazy good. The sauce made this for me. When I was looking at it on the menu I immediately thought of spice. But I was surprised when I got more of a sweet flavor along with the curry. They blended so well that I couldn't get enough of the sauce. Then I got the Crispy Skate Wing. This was also very good. I didn't know it would be fully fried. I guess I should have guessed that. But it was good regardless. The fish was cooked to perfection and the flavor and seasoning of the breaded part was very nice, and the sauce and picked onions complemented it well. Also enjoyed the Potatoes it came with. For Dessert I tried the Pineapple shaved Ice. This and the Coconut version appeared to be their specialty, so I had to give it a try. Overall it was surprisingly good. With the toppings and a flavor, it felt like I really wasn't eating shaved ice at all. And It felt like more of a rich dessert then it was. The Service was great. Our server was very good and on top of things. She had good in-depth knowledge of the menu. People don't really look at that often in their servers. But to me that makes a big difference and is always nice when the servers are knowledgeable about what the restaurant is serving. It gives me more confidence in what I'm ordering. The setting is very cool. It has like luggage as decoration, around the whole place. Lighting looks very nice. Everything gives off a sophisticated and higher-class vibe. This place does basically everything well. I couldn't find anything to complain about or any flaws at all with what I was served, or how it was served. I can't take any points off for anything, even though nothing did blow me off of my feet. But Del Mar is just solid in every way. Good food, good environment, good service, good drinks. Ate here this week. Really nice atmosphere, and they have some fantastic wines by the glass. Service was great and staff was friendly. With tip parking was $13... very expensive...that's definitely a con. I didn't think the tuna poke was any better than anywhere else, and was a small portion. Poke bros is actually better, and you get 5x as much. The shisito peppers were tasty. They had some interesting salads, we tried one with bacon on it can't remember what one that was, it was good, and different. Tried the burger--it was fantastic. Rich and buttery. Reminded me of the burger at 3rd and Hollywood. Had the Halibut--prepared Shanghai style. I was disappointed in this. I found the fish to be over cooked, and the entire dish was very very salty. Rice should have been served on the side, as it soaked up all of the broth. I've had this preparation for years all kinds of places, and they didn't execute it well here. And like I said, too much salt! Overall had a great time, would return to try more and different items. 3.5-4 stars--room for improvement for sure, but prices not outrageously high which leaves room for subtle disappointments. read more

Main: I ordered the scallops, perfect portion and amazing sides. The Chimichurri wasn't too much all and went well with the sides. Friends ordered the special of the day which was salmon. It was perfectly cooked and a good size. Reason this place didn't get 5 stars is because of the oyster size. We ordered a dozen and a small handful were about 1/2 inch in size - if that. They ran out of the dish I ordered, and that caused me to have to order from the dinner menu due to timing. Not a huge deal but a bit disappointing. We visited for opening night and had an amazing time! The staff was incredibly friendly. Our server, Griffin was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. He was happy to help us with the many questions we had about the menu. I wish there was a Griffin at every restaurant I visited! The food was very solid. We tried a lot since everything sounded good. For three hungry people we split three appetizers. The potato bread is a must, the chips and guac were really good, and the oysters were good, however, I won't get them again. Too pricey for what they are. I got the beef chow fun, along with my fiancé. We both liked it! It was an interesting asian addition to a mostly seafood menu. My brother got the wagyu burger and he liked it. One of the main things that drew me to this place was the dessert menu. We tried the chocolate cake, the Hawaiian shaved ice, and the coconut on the half shell. All were amazing. The coconut was by far my favorite, followed by the Hawaiian shaved ice. Both were very light and refreshing. The chocolate cake was good, just too rich for my liking. I got the Euro Trip cocktail which was good, but kind of boring. My fiancé got the tropicalia cocktail and it was very interesting! The avocado was an intriguing addition to make it a unique drink. I forgot to take a picture of it, but it came out looking like an avocado with the unmistakable green hue. Overall, I liked Del Mar. The food was reasonably priced for a nicer dinner out and the service was amazing. I can't wait to visit the roof top bar that will open later this month! read more

I can't believe I haven't visited this restaurant until just now! I was blown away by my experience at Del Mar. When I walked into the restaurant, I was really impressed by the decor and overall vibe. It's a beautifully decorated space! I really liked how they have part of the kitchen open so you can watch from your table (if you're sitting the right way). The staff was incredibly friendly and we were seated right away. Our waitress greeted us soon after we were seated, and she was very helpful answering questions about the menu. For happy hour, I ordered the Pineapple Dance cocktail. WOW it was incredible! I ordered several more over the course of the evening. For appetizers, our table ordered oysters on the half shell, ceviche, crab salad, and the shishito peppers. All of it was so fresh and incredible. The ceviche was so refreshing. The oysters were very fresh, which is a nice find for central Ohio. For my entree, I ordered the fisherman's stew. It was the best seafood stew I've had! It is packed with different things such as shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops, potatoes, etc. The broth was so flavorful and spiced to perfection. To top it off, the stew came with two delicious pieces of toasted bread - perfect for dipping in the broth. My only regret was that we didn't save any room for dessert. You MUST visit this restaurant. My wife had the spicy beef bowl and she loved it. My cheeseburger was really fresh and definitely a top ten in my cheeseburger category. Overall a great experience! We took my parents here for a celebratory dinner on a Monday evening, we were not disappointed. Got there at 5:30pm, just in time to have a cocktail for happy hour and some starters before our meal. Drinks were refreshing and well priced. Oysters on the half shell were fresh and had great flavor. The presentation was beautiful and my dad (a big time oyster lover), was even impressed. Entrees included, crispy skate (cooked perfectly, a mild fish flavor, lightly breaded). The sea scallops, done the way we like them with beautiful color and taste. The tuna poke dish, with a lightly spiced vinaigrette over seaweed salad and avocado, this was a favorite. And lastly the salmon. (This was prepared a bit more overdone then we like, we asked for medium rare and it was still a bit dry but had good flavor). Service was wonderful, everyone was very pleasant and attentive. Atmosphere is perfect for a nice evening out on the town. It's what columbus needs in a so-cal seafood spot, we will be back! read more

Went to Del Mar for the first time recently for a good friend's birthday dinner. We had standing reservations for seven people for around three weeks. While we arrived on time, it was a bit off putting to have to wait nearly fifteen minutes after our 10 PM reservation until we could be seated. As we were finally led back to our table, the service was pleasant and funny. A little weird that we had to often deal with passerby's flocking last us, as our table was nearby an interior doorway to the elevator that leads up to he rooftop lounge above. The potato bread was tasty, the cocktails were fine. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful, but our food didn't really live up to the expectations. Even though the new Cameron Mitchell restaurant flaunts it's seafood-based menu, I ordered the veggie burger and fries. Pretty simple; bean bean burger with accompaniments--just no seasoning whatsoever! The patty was gummy and flavorless, which was kind of a letdown. One of my other dining companions had another non-seafood option: the barbacoa tacos with sweet potato fries. She made a comment about the massive discrepancy in topping ratio of the meager three tacos and her sweet potato fries looked and tasted quite unappealing. The wedge-like fries were barely baked, not warm, and just wrong. All in all, I expect better from CMR as the Columbus powerhouse. I will have to go back and hope that salt is used and I will try the seafood. read more

Got to visit Del Mar for the soft opening tonight. What a beautiful restaurant! Awesome decor and a front wall full of windows that open up to High Street. We sampled a lot of appetizers and items off the ice section of the menu. Everything was great. I especially enjoyed the potato bread, oysters on the half shell, and peeky toe crab. For entrees we ordered the beef chow fun, swordfish, and crispy skate. All were great. My favorite was the beef chow fun, but I would definitely order any of them again. Dessert was fantastic as well, and I'm not usually a big dessert person. We ordered the Hawaiian shave ice, chocolate, and olive oil cake. The Hawaiian Ice was pineapple flavored and I've never had a more refreshing dessert in a restaurant. The chocolate was great too. It was a warm brownie with a unique ice cream and sauce. As for the food, I was a tad underwhelmed. I decided to round them up to 4 because the service was really good. We ordered the potato bread to share and I got the 40 yolk tagliatelle. The boyfriend got the daily ahi tuna special. As for my cocktail, I got the "for the win", which was fruity and dangerous cause it's sweetness masked all taste of alcohol. The potato bread was soft and slightly dense. The sour cream butter accompanying it was good. However, after multiple bites, it starts to feel heavy. My tagliatelle was cooked perfectly, but unfortunately it was too salty! Also wished they had an option to add seafood cause it started to get a bit plain for me with only mushrooms. The ahi tuna was amazing, but I felt the portion was small for the price. It also doesn't come with much. The two pieces of tuna only came with an asian beansprout slaw. Wish it came with some kind of starch to make it a bit more substantial and filling. So in terms of food, I felt this place could improve, but in regards to service and ambiance this place is great! If I'm back, it would probably be for the ambiance and happy hour! read more

There's a lot of street parking available for ~$5/hr that you can pay through the Park Cbus app. Once inside the restaurant, you'll see they have a vibrant open space layout with a variety of seating options (tables, booths, bar). Their happy hour deals are worth checking out. Personally, I think the brussel sprouts and curry mussels are MUST haves from what I tried, but the oysters were very bare and had little meat. For the main course, I tried several dishes and thought they were all great. However, the beef chow fun was WAY too salty. We told our waitress who was very kind about it and offered that they remake it, but the remade version was just as salty and honestly inedible. We took the leftovers home and added more noodles so the food wouldn't go to waste and we could balance out the saltiness. read more

I am giving it three stars as it reflects my experience today, not cumulatively. My husband and I have been patrons here for a year now; especially in the face of COVID when it was practically a ghost town; we have been coming here every Sunday at 11AM like clockwork. Most of the wait staff, management, and cooks know us very well. This should reflect the long-standing (positive) sentiment(s) we have towards Del Mar as a reasonably-priced, high-quality eatery in Columbus. I can count on one hand the amount of times we've had to have our waiter bring something back to the kitchen due to quality (i.e., three). Needless to say, we've had almost everything on their menu, several times over by now. The waitstaff know our routine, so even without mentioning anything, they will bring out my cup of coffee with cream and sweetener. That demonstrates intuitive, yet keen attention to detail that many of their competitors do not demonstrate. Additionally, I have found Del Mar to be consistent with their quality and customer-service experience 99.99% of the time. This brings me to my feedback/critique regarding today's experience. My husband had ordered their hamburger for the first time; in sum, the actual beef patty itself was well seasoned and cooked, as were the accompanying toppings (e.g,. veggies). After eating out half of the burger, our waiter asked us how it was, and my husband asked if any condiments accompanied the burger as it was somewhat bland (regarding the buns). Our waiter had noted it comes with ketchup and a garlic aioli; for which my husband noted there was no such aioli that came out with his, and he further remarked that in general, the burger was underwhelming. The waiter proceeded to remark "well, you already ate half of it man, so it must have not have not been that bad." That's when I stepped in as I did not appreciate the tone of voice and approach he used with my husband. I expanded on my husband's feedback and mentioned we've been coming here for a long time and that most of the staff know us by memory, for which he remarked "thats' great, and we appreciate that" in a pretty closed-off/invalidating manner. That's when I asked him to speak with the manager. After describing the situation to the manager; I emphasized that we were NOT looking for a free meal (nor for them to comp the meal), we were simply noting our experience with our waiter, who had jumped to the conclusion we were wanting either a free meal or a replacement (for which we didn't ask for). Perhaps he has had prior experiences where that was the case, but alas, he was not listening to the words we were saying, and instead perceived it in his own unique way. For that, I encouraged the manager that he could stand to receive some assistance in customer service. Would a business really be willing to lose a long-standing patron because of one meal? For us, our waiter projected that sentiment to us, and is unacceptable. Luckily, the manager (Anna) demonstrated the level and quality of service we have often seen there, and is something for that waiter to make note of for himself going forward. The manager ended up comping the burger, and even threw in a free slice of cake; we had mentioned to her several times that we did not want her to make our burger free, but she insisted. For her persistence and fidelity to customer service, we are immensely grateful for Anna. Money was not an issue for us, in fact, we left Anna a 50% tip - money that theoretically could have been given to our waiter had he himself demonstrated the quality/level of customer service we were expecting. On another note, their food and customer service is fantastic, and are the reasons we continue to go to Del Mar. We have certainly stopped going to other places around Columbus even if their food was really good; if customer service is below par, we refuse to spend our hard-earned money on such an establishment. All in all, we will continue to call Del Mar our Sunday brunch spot. Thank you Anna; we will be seeing you all next Sunday for brunch! read more

My dad and I walked past Del Mar last month while strolling Short North and eating Jeni's. The stunning atmosphere made us vow that we would go for dinner next time he was in town. So we did & I'm glad! There was a large wine selection and mine was great! We got the potato bread for an appetizer, which also did not disappoint. It was like a loaded potato in bread form with a super flavorful "sour cream butter." While the appetizer was probably more than my daily value of necessary carbs, my carb-loving self was disappointed in the entrees. I ordered the fisherman's stew, my boyfriend had the swordfish, and my dad got the halibut. The seafood was flavorful and fresh, but all entrees were stingy on starches. My stew included 3 small potatoes, my boyfriend's plate was lightly smeared with a potato purée, and my dad's had no starch at all. For the price, it just seemed a little empty. In all, it was a nice experience. I'll definitely go back for drinks and appetizers to enjoy the gorgeous interior. Will be back to indulge a seafood craving for a special occasion- not a regular stop. read more

We started off with the pickled octopus, it had great flavor and came with the house made tortilla chips ( also very good). I need to add they open at 4 we arrived at 4:15 on Friday had to wait to sit at bar. So get there early, we had 5:15 reservation no no issue. Once seated tried shrimp ceviche also good with the same chips, and 3 raw oysters. Dinner options sword fish with sweet potato mash, and Halibut with a Timor's sauce and mushrooms! If you're looking for fine dining this is the place. I must say it can get a bit loud though. Parking can also be a bit tight as it's right downtown Columbus. The food was really good. Apparently they are known for their tacos which i was bummed i didn't try. I did see it and it did look really good. We wear Ake to wear our masks until we were seated. Walking into Del Mar was a joy! The decor is super chic with how cleverly they lined up vintage suitcases. The lighting too gave the place a nice warm welcoming feel. Our waiter was excellent and the food!! Everything we tried was well seasoned and fresh. We had the fresh oysters of the day, to die for and I personally got the potato bread (melts in your mouth), the ceviche (so light and tangy) and the sweet potatoes (bursting with flavor). Second time here wasn't quite as good as the first. This time we sat at the bar. Had to ask for water several times. That wasn't a big deal though. Started out with salads. Mine was the gem. Hard to eat, quite frankly. Like a wedge but even harder to cut. Decent taste though. I ordered the salmon. It was really good. But I could have eaten at least two of these meals. Yeah, I'm a fairly big eater but not that big. It just wasn't enough food. Wife got a burger. It was really good. I ate half of it. We'll get an appetizer next time. Amazing food! I made a reservation for my birthday and they did not disappoint! I came in for happy hour on Saturday afternoon. I got the brussels sprouts, kale and roasted vegetables, and the pineapple dance cocktail. My friend got the oysters and the beach party cocktail. The drinks were strong, and they were so good that my friend ordered another beach party! For our main courses, I got the beef chow fun and my friend got the del mar burger. We were so full from the appetizers and drinks that we couldn't finish our main meals, so we took them to go. I was also offered a free dessert for my birthday, so I got the coconut sorbet and it was DELICIOUS! I love the vibe of the restaurant and the staff is so nice and friendly! Have been there a handful of times. The lobster roll is great. I've been coming since they opened, and one of the biggest issues I have with this "seafood" place is the oysters. Why, over a 2-3 year period of time, do I always get a mouthful of sand whenever I order oysters? How do you not properly clean oysters? I spit it out on my plate every time. I have given the oysters a chance with every visit (4-5 total visits by now) and I am disgusted every time. This has to be some sort of health hazard or health code violation. It's hard to enjoy the rest of the food knowing that a restaurant that prides itself on seafood can't even clean or shuck an oyster properly after 3 years or almost 3 years of being open. It makes me question the preparation of the rest of their food. I'm sure they are aware of the situation as they never hesitate to take the oysters off my tab. Just stop serving oysters. Hoof Hearted has delicious seafood in huge portions for half the price. And a parking lot. And oysters that don't leave grit in your teeth for days. read more

Del Mar was okay, so-so I would say. The food was decent, but definitely not for the price. The fried rice was delicious but each added scallop was $6, making the dish $18 more expensive than I'd expected. The drink I had was watered down. The service was slow for a nice restaurant. This was our first visit to Del Mar but I can confidently say it won't be our last! We stopped in about an hour before closing on a Friday night and the staff was super friendly and accommodating. The bar was wide open so we sat right up at the center around the beautiful bar seating area. Since this was one of the last stops of the night we ended up getting a bunch of their signature cocktails. When I say these drinks were amazing, that is not an expansion of how they really tasted. The flavors were all spot on and their version of an old fashioned was probably my favorite drink of the night. They use a Jasmine Tea simple syrup that really brings out the flavor of the drink big time. The other drinks in the photo were also really good but if you're in there you need to try their old fashioned! We plan on going back this week for some food as well, so keep an eye out for an update! read more

An experience worth having yet not something I would crave and have a desire to come to often. Del Mar usually has valet parking out front and due to the pandemic didn't have that option available. No worries as a parking garage was just a block or two away. The interior was elegant and smaller than I had imagined but this is downtown. The service was fantastic but the menu had me scratching my head. The prices, portions and flavors didn't wow me. I need a full combination to make this a five star option. Started with the Smokey the bear cocktail that included Tequila and spice, need I say more? Wow, now that drink could move the needle to a five! Smooth, spicy and very flavorful without an aftertaste. My husband got the tropicali and it was good. Decent but not a second order cocktail. It had vodka, avocado, citrus and mint. Nice blend but definitely outside the box with flavors and creativity. We ordered the oysters and shrimp ceviche to start. Shrimp ceviche had some good flavor and spices. A lot of lime juice which over powered the rest of the ingredients but the seasoned tortilla brought it so together. I ordered the special for today, seabass. Not my favorite preparation and flavors weren't strong and soft. Now, my husband ordered the Halibut. Holy fish dish, a must! Now those flavors kicked the fish up a notch. My favorite to the evening was the coconut sorbet. I have a dairy intolerance and when I saw this on the menu, it was an absolute yes! The sorbet was not slushy or icey like most sorbets. It was very, very heavy and creamy. Coconut lovers, this is highly recommended. Mixed feelings after getting our bill and confused as what to write. I couldn't put my finger on one thing but wasn't taken back and wowed. Hope to visit again and try something different. read more
