It's been a minute since I last dined at Sofia in Englewood. I was in the area this past Sunday, and decided to stop by for a late night cocktail and snack. It's refreshing to find a steakhouse that serves food and drinks late on a Sunday night. The decor, vibes, and clientele are upscale. It's not uncommon for exotic cars to pull up at the valet station. We sat at the bar and were waited on by James who had a great personality and a flair for mixing cocktails. The "White Walker" is a long-standing cocktail on the Sofia menu, and it really hit the spot (Ketel One vodka, coconut cream, lychee, lemon and club soda). My wife tried the "Geisha's Lullaby" - a Japanese whisky cocktail with pistachio, lime, falernum and vanilla. This cocktail was outstanding! On the food side, I ordered Cacio E Pepe. I enjoyed it. Not creamy like the typical cacio e pepe, but the pasta was served over a delicious slice of beef carpaccio. I'd rate it a 4.5 of 5.0. To finish the evening, I enjoyed a pour of Redbreast 12 from Sofia's wall of spirits. Whiskey lovers will enjoy the options, including luxury pours. My wife tried a Peaches in Paris cocktail - white peach puree, vodka, lemon, St. Germain, and Peychaud's bitters. The Peychaud's bitters bullied this cocktail making it slightly unbalanced. For starters, the complimentary bread choices is a bonus. The oysters for appetizer were very fresh and taste well, didn't have too much of a briney/fishy taste which was a bonus for me and sauces paired very well together. The pasta was very creamy and enjoyed the flavor. As someone who loves steak and is picky with how I receive it, I had ordered a porterhouse Medium Rare, the first one we received was overcooked to medium well and our server second guessed me when I brought it to attention. He had to call over another worker to double check and we had to ask once again if we were able to get it redone to our liking before even getting it replaced right away. The second porterhouse we received was done correctly and was seasoned well and had enough fat to make it buttery and melty. Espresso Martini was made well and for Whiskey Sours, if you like them on the smokier side, I would recommend it. All in all, we enjoyed all the food but the only set back for us was that we had to wait a little longer for our steak which we wanted to pair with our pasta. Celebrated my aunt's 70th birthday with a Sunday brunch at Sofia, and overall it was a really nice experience--with a few things to keep in mind. We arrived right when they opened (perfect timing, especially with a snowstorm expected later that day), so the restaurant was still quiet. The space has a modern, upscale vibe that definitely feels suited for special occasions. It's located on a busy street, and while they do offer valet, we lucked out with free street parking since it was early. They offer a prix fixe brunch for $39 per person, which includes an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. It's a good way to experience the restaurant without committing to a full dinner price point--but be aware that quite a few items come with upcharges, and drinks are not included, so the bill can climb quickly. I do have a gluten allergy, and I was honestly surprised by how limited the gluten-free options were for a restaurant of this caliber. That said, I made it work: I started with a Bellini, had the sizzling slab of bacon as my appetizer, the recovery burger (no bun sub roasted potatoes as a side) as my main, and finished with the salted caramel gelato. Everything I had was enjoyable, but I would have appreciated more flexibility in the menu. The rest of the group (no dietary restrictions) had more variety to choose from and really enjoyed their meals, which is always a good sign. Service was attentive without being overbearing--likely helped by the fact that it wasn't too crowded yet--so we were able to relax and actually enjoy conversation, which made the celebration feel special. The restaurant also has a private back room that looks great for parties, plus a downstairs lounge area, which adds to its appeal as an event space. Overall, for me it's definitely more of a special occasion spot, and while the pricing is on the higher side for what you get, brunch feels like the best way to experience it. Gorgeous aesthetic and very spacious. I booked this for my brother's birthday and the staff were very kind. It's a great place for all occasions. As I was leaving, a large dinner crowd was arriving, so I definitely recommend making a reservation. They also have a smoking section where you can order and enjoy cigars indoors. The appetizers were the highlight for my family and really got everything off to a great start. Our table favorites were the Eggplant Rollatini, Thick Slab of Bacon, and Fritto Misto. I had the Chicken Paillard, and the sautéed mushrooms on top really made the dish. The drinks were also lovely, with a creative cocktail menu. The Jungle Bird was my personal favorite. Overall, it was a pleasure being a patron here. One surprise was that the prices are very comparable to Manhattan, which caught me a bit off guard. read more

While most places are reluctant to even serve a glass of tap water, I appreciate that they provide a full size bottle for the table. Chicken Palliard: Sadly, I did not pick the best entrée. The chicken definitely needed a fair sprinkle of salt and peppers as I feel it lacked flavor. For our entrees, we had the chicken parm, fettucine, and ravioli. The ravioli was just alright and I wouldn't order it again. We had informed the waiter at the beginning of the meal that we were here for a friend's birthday. We were told to order a dessert and it would come out with a lit candle. During our meal, the table next to us and behind us had a table and we saw the lit candles for their birthdays. However, when we ordered our dessert (parfait), it did not come with a candle. We raised this concern to our waiter and he anticlimactically stuck a candle in the dessert and lit the candle without apologizing. We were disappointed with this as we felt he should have taken the dessert back to bring it out again with the candle for effect. The outside dining area is covered but has a great charm for the several large parties in the space. Considering there were at least 5 large parties (7+ppl) the service was outstanding. Came here on a Friday evening at 530 with reservations for s high top by the bar. There's street parking and valet. I chose to self park around the corner from the venue. We chose outer food from the happy hour menu. We got the mussels calamari, Caesar salad and truffle fries. Also ordered the Seductress cocktail, which was pretty good. Our service was really good. the manager even came over, welcomed us and cleared out our table. The mussels were okay. A tad bit bland, the Caesar salad and calamari were pretty good. However, the truffle fries were over fried and way to oily. We ventured downstairs and was given a tour of the cigar area but was not allowed to stay as we were not members. The ambiance is upscale. Went to Sofia over the summer for an early dinner and had such a lovely time! The front dining area is drenched in natural light and continues to bring a little bit of the outside inside with a tree at the center of the dining room. There's plenty of seating, so it's perfect for a solo date at the bar, date night, or an intimate dinner with friends. I believe there is a cigar room (not sure if that is also a dining area), but when making a reservation, I made sure to specify that I did not want to dine there. We sat in a corner booth with a full view of the dining and bar areas. Drinks: My partner ordered a No Crying In Baseball, and I started with a Lavender Corpse Reviver (the corpse reviver has become a go-to gin drink, and the lavender twist was a nice touch!) Starter: We ordered the sizzling slab bacon -- a must if you're a bacon fan. (This can also be added as a compliment to a steak if you order that for dinner) We paired it with the Italian long peppers with sausage, aged provolone, and oreganata. Personally, the latter was my favorite! Entrées I heard lots of good things about the Porterhouse for two! It's served on a piping hot plate, so it continues to sear. We ordered a pappardelle to share and a side of creamed spinach. Something I recently learned about myself is that I love combining my steak with creamed spinach. It's the perfect buttery and cheesy bite! We washed it down with a glass of Robert Mondavi. The bill was exactly what you'd expect but also way cheaper than what I paid at Hell's Kitchen in AC (which was highway robbery IMO lol). We ordered a salad with shrimp (Insalata Sofia)a grilled Porterhouse, which was impressively large and delicious ; lemon chicken (Pollo al limone) was succulent...moscattos, drinks and desserts The dishes definitely have high-quality ingredients and flavor x me. All of our servers, starting with the first one who spoke to us, whose name is Fredie, were very kind and very professional, always attentive to us. The place is beautifully decorated. It's suitable for medium and large groups as well. They have enough staff to serve everyone If the restaurant is full. I personally like to go early and during the week because I like quieter environments to be able to chat with my friends. But last night, Thursday, a friend from Mexico came to visit me, and I made a reservation. It was quite full and the noise was medium-high. If you like that atmosphere, it's perfect. The person who got our reservation for me over the phone and who later became the hostess who greeted us at the restaurant entrance was fine. Great experience and great food! I've been coming here for a long time and the crowd, service, and food is always good. For food we got the tuna tartare which was made well and fresh. We then split the 12 oz filet, medium rare with creamed spinach and truffle fries. The fries could have used a little more salt but everything else was top tier actually. Steak was excellent quality with great beefy flavor and the creamed spinach was rich and i think i detected some truffle on it. Drinks were also great. My first visit was out of this world and my second visit solidified my opinion on my first visit even more! The food was so comforting and filling. Everything came out in a timely matter. The porterhouse was enough to split between 2 of us with 2 sides to share. For apps, each one pictured are EXCELLENT choices; the meatballs were so soft and tender and just break down in all the right ways and even better? Comes with a dollop of ricotta cheese. The buratta comes on a bed of arugula tossed in what tasted like balsamic vinegar. Lastly, the crab raviolis was such a refreshing dish and was stuffed with perfect amounts of crab. The cocktails were amazing; not overly sweet or strong but definitely sneak up on you! Service was phenomenal. I had 2 different servers for both visits but both assured everything was in place and in our favor at all times. For the ambiance, this is the place for those aesthetic pictures ladies! During the day, the natural lighting pours into the dining area. I almost didn't go to Sofia because of some of the reviews I read on here. However, I cannot express how glad I am that I gave this restaurant a chance! First of all, it was easy to get a reservation through their website which is always a great start to the experience. Secondly, it's a beautiful restaurant. Right away when they received us I could see its super elegant and modern decor. It's a rather large restaurant so we had to follow the hostess for a little bit to the covered patio, but the patio also did not disappoint. It's spacious and beautiful, and there was even a DJ. The waiter attended us right away and got our drinks out in less than five minutes, our appetizers in less than 10 and the entrees in less than 10 minutes after we finished the appetizers. The drinks were super well balanced, refreshing and delicious. We ordered the mozzarella and tuna tartare for our appetizers. Both were super tasty although I like the tartare better because I felt like it had more exciting flavors. For our entrees, my husband had a NY strip which came with steak sauce and coarse salt. And I had the parpadelle with ragu which was absolutely delicious. Overall, we had an amazing experience. The vibe here was soooo weird Three bartenders behind the bar - one was training. Dave was not friendly and gave asshole vibes. It was happy hour and they didn't have any menus ready (happy hour started at four and it was after 5 when we walked in). My friend had to look at the menu on her phone. I asked for an old fashioned and preferred for the fruit to not be mashed up, the bartending training openly talked shit about how to make an old fashioned the traditional way. But he couldn't even shake a cocktail and pour correctly. Old fashioned came out disgusting and not well-balanced. I immediately changed my drink to a glass of wine - you can't fuck that up right ? The branzino was rubbery. Oysters sucked . Garlic mashed potatoes were great although I didn't taste the garlic. The hostess were friendly and welcoming The manager was friendly and understanding when we complained to him. He offered to extend our stay but we were already on our way out. It is located close to the busy Bergen Performing Arts Center, has valet parking, a covered/heated outdoor dining area, and even a downstairs cigar lounge. The restaurant is ALWAYS busy. So, upon arriving and instead of waiting for our table to become available, we decided to sit at one of their high top tables, adjacent to the bar. Great decision and recommended. Our Server, Suzy, was outstanding, professional, courteous, helpful, and her attention to detail was appreciated. We ordered the following entrees: Ravioli Di Zucca (butternut squash filling, butter and sage sauce, parmigiano reggiano, and crushed amaretto cookies). This is, arguably, the best Ravioli dish I have ever had. The savoriness of every bite....combined with the crunch of the cookies...made this a memorable selection. The other item was the Polipo e Panzanella (grilled octopus, heirloom cherry tomatoes, roasted bell peppers). Once again, a hit with the firmness of the octopus, serving it cut into bite sized pieces, and how the vegetables complemented the dish, placed it into the delectable category. As a relative newbie to the area, I always keep my ear to the ground for local restaurant recommendations. When Sofia came up near the top of most people's lists, my husband and I decided it was high time to see for ourselves. The hype is absolutely real. We knew when we ordered the Sofia salad that it came with crab meat, but we weren't expecting the shower of lumpy crab meat (in fact, we thought it was cheese at first glance). It was a fresh and delicious precursor to our NY strip steak, which announced its arrival by smoke, sizzle, and aroma before it even got to our table. I loved the way they sit the steak slightly at an angle at the table so that all the buttery meat juices can pool at the bottom. Our server dipped our first pieces in that lovely bath before putting it on our plates, which was such a lovely touch. I'm not a real stickler for service; so long as food comes on a timely basis with general friendliness. But I can tell the service at Sofia is on another plane. There seem to be two layers of servers dedicated to tables here, distinguishable by either their all-black garb or their white coats. Our two servers were quick to attend to any needs, so much that it felt like our water glasses were topped off every time we took a sip. As first timers, we had some questions about menu items, and each inquiry was met with detailed answers and recommendations that were absolutely spot on. While the restaurant looks small on the outside, the space is cavernous on the inside. There are two floors, with the bar and main dining space on the topside and a cigar lounge on the bottom floor. For those preferring an al fresco experience on fair weather days, there are also a good number of small tables on the sidewalk outside. We loved the booth we were assigned, as it sat below a lush, greenery-lined skylight and created a gorgeous ambiance. I even spotted a large back space that looked appropriate for private events. I was immediately drawn in by the beautiful indoor-outdoor setup , the open doors, the polished look of the staff in chef jackets , it gave the impression of a refined, welcoming dining experience. Unfortunately, the service at the bar did not reflect that same standard. I sat at the bar for several minutes before being acknowledged, despite it not being busy at the time. The bartender, Juhari, appeared more engaged in conversation with coworkers than attending to guests. When I was finally assisted, the interaction felt unnecessarily difficult -- I was met with resistance when asking for a happy hour menu (even though there was still an hour remaining), carrying on, a simple request for a bit more club soda in my Aperol spritz was met with pushback about how the drink is made. This bartender did not fit the script . What should have been a relaxed and enjoyable experience instead felt uncomfortable and argumentative, which is disappointing , especially in a setting that presents itself as a higher-end establishment. Had an enjoyable meal here last night with my wife for an early Valentine's dinner. The overall experience was good but I will say the food is probably somewhere slightly below 4 out of 5 stars. Everything else was great so I think 4/5 is the right rating. The long hot pepper appetizer was incredible. That I will say was the best thing I ate last night with the melted aged provolone bubbling hot. I ordered the ribeye and I wasn't wowed. It was very good, but not great, and I expected great for $89. It was slightly overcooked (more medium instead of my requested medium rare) and didn't have any real dry age taste to it. Mac and cheese was also very tasty and highly recommended as a side dish. My wife enjoyed her filet mignon. Service was excellent. Our waiter kept coming back to bring more water and was friendly. Wish I remembered his name to give him his props. Would come back to get other dishes, and maybe the porterhouse is the way to go. read more

The menu is so good that I would honestly suggest doing something like that because if you only get one entrée every time you go, you'll never get to try all the good things they have. It also has a high end bar with really nice cocktails, which makes the whole experience feel a little elevated. Definitely a great date night spot or somewhere to go when you want a fun night out with good food and drinks. The servers are nice and attentive, however, since it is high-end, they are simply going to stand in the corner and watch to see what you need. We went to Sofia for my daughter's 18th birthday. She got an 8 oz filet, while my wife got Chicken Milanese and I got spicy Lobster Penne. We got the rice balls as an appetizer. Everything was great. My wife really enjoyed her Milanese and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed her medium rare steak. My pasta was a bit too "al dente" for my taste, but that's a small complaint. Served directly on the pan, it was super hot and tomatoes was perfectly mushy! Avocado toast - it was good but nothing outstanding to point out Drunken monkey pancake - the best one ! The baked pancake felt super light and fluffy. The bananas and pecans were inside and not topped up and we did not even feel the need to add maple syrup. I'm definitely going back for these!!!! Hazelnut ice cream - something too icy about it, did not enjoy at all. The issue wasn't the food or the ambiance--it was the service, specifically our server. The gray-haired server assigned to our table was rude, inattentive, and frankly seemed irritated to be there. Simple requests felt like an inconvenience to him, and his tone was dismissive throughout the entire meal. For a restaurant that prides itself on being upscale, this level of service is completely unacceptable. I expect a certain standard when dining here, and unfortunately, this experience fell far short. Been here several times and everything that I've ordered has been delicious. They have an incredible chicken Parm that is crispy and has a great sauce with it. My daughter and I stopped here before a show and I ordered the brisket which was tender and flavorful. Good spot for drinks during happy hour as well. Friendly service and nice atmosphere. read more
