Decided to try a new spot for Valentine's Day, and I regret that choice. I usually stick to the same restaurant in town for molcajetes, but Sofia's popped up on social media and theirs looked great. They were also advertising a free margarita for couples with reservations, which we had but our server never asked about it. We were seated quickly, but that was the only quick part of the night. It took over 35 minutes just to get water, and we weren't allowed to order everything at once. The food order took another 15-20 minutes. My partner's camarones arrived first and were warm and delicious, the shrimp sauce was a 9/10. My molcajete arrived later and looked nothing like the one advertised. It was missing items like cheese and chorizo, and the menu doesn't clarify different versions. The sauce was cold and lacked flavor; only the asada stood out. By the time it arrived, my rice and beans were already cold. Maybe they were overwhelmed by the Valentine's crowd, but the food and service were disappointing. I ordered the combo plate and loved every bite. The carne asada taco was perfectly seasoned and fresh with onions and cilantro. The red enchilada had that bold, classic flavor you hope for, and the creamy chile relleno was rich, savory, and totally addictive. Don't even get me started on the sauce..The rice was fluffy and flavorful, and the refried beans were smooth and topped with the perfect amount of cheese, just how I like them. We decided to have a dinner date, but not to far from the house. We were returning something near by and decided to give this restaurant a try. Thank goodness we did! I love Mexican food. This is hands down the best Mexican restaurant food I've had in a while. The waitress was very friendly and quick with our food. I had the red enchiladas and my husband had the Chile con carne. The flavor in both dishes was so delicious. Felt like I was in my grandma's kitchen, it was that good!. We also got complimentary chips and salsa, red and green, just a bit spicy. The drinks were also very tasty. I had Sofias margarita and the watermelon seasonal margarita. Saw a review of this place from foodie influencer firstdatedude and decided to give it a try and so glad we did! We had the Queso con Crema (Cheese Dip) appetizer which was very good, but comes in a huge bowl. This would be enough for 6 people. We also got a half order of taquitos. Our traditional margaritas were excellent and so pretty! We love Mexican food and saw something new on the menu that we don't normally see so we gave the Carnitas Estilo Michoacan a try and ordered it with the homemade corn tortillas. We loved that dish! And whatever the green sauce that comes with the chips at the beginning is, we loved that too! There is a happy hour from 4-6 which is worth coming back for. I wanted to try this place because it's right by my house. I was very disappointed in the outcome. I ordered fajitas because it's my favorite thing to order at a Mexican restaurant. What I got was their interpretation of fajitas. If it ain't broke dont fix it. The fajitas was served on a big white plate, not a hot iron skillet making the crackling noise that I'm used to and love. Not only that. It was lukewarm almost cold. Definitely doesn't feel like it was freshly cooked. Mine and my friends fajitas was the same almost cold. Now I know prices have been going up but $28 for the amount I got was way to expensive in my opinion even with today's prices. We are blessed with so many Mexican restaurant options in this area that I don't have time for mediocre attempts at what should be something easy to do. To sum it up, I won't be back. Now don't get me wrong. The food was ok besides it not being hot. 5 stars because the food portion was big. The dim lights in the later evening really created the atmosphere. The live music/band was really nice it made the visit much more pleasurable. I ordered chipotle shrimp and it wasn't that great. It didn't have the creamy chipotle look and the shrimp didn't even taste like chipotle my rice was bland. The margaritas were okay tasted too much like the syrup. Also I have never had a server/bartender charge you for a drink you didn't even like/drink that's mind blowing and that's what exactly happened to my friend they might as well left the drink if they were still going to charge her for it. I ordered Chile Verde but when the server brought me my plate it didn't look or taste anything like Chile Verde. I didn't want to insult anyone or complain about their food because at least it didn't taste bad. Just wish I would've gotten what I ordered. Wanted to try Sofia's because it's close to where I live and we loved the El Rosal that used to be in this building. The interior changes are nice, although more subdued than most Mexican restaurants. The service was very good and attentive. The food was flat out weird for Mexican food. My husband loves chili rellanos and enchiladas, so he ordered a combo plate. The chili rellano was yucky! A mild poblano pepper stuffed with cream cheese and drowned in a cheese sauce. It was not battered or fried. It was just a melty mess on the plate. He only ate one or two bites and left the rest. He did eat the enchilada because he was hungry, but he said it had little flavor. I had the shrimp salad. It consisted of a bowl of spinach leaves, topped with grilled shrimp, pumpkin seeds, tomatoes, a quartered cucumber and a quartered pear. The dressing was served on the side and I think it might have been olive oil with some sort of odd flavor added. The shrimp were tasty, but tough. The salad needed salt and pepper, but none was available on any of the tables. The tomatillo dip was probably the best part of the whole meal, although fresh chips would have made it better. We were there at 6:00 pm on a Thursday and were the only people in the restaurant. There are too many great Mexican restaurants in town to choose from.
