I wanted to come here because the menu looked very appealing. A vast selection of cocktails including some very fruity/fresh margaritas. I went with the Basil Watermelon margarita. It was refreshing and the tajin that rimed glass was a perfect mix. The sampler for two is a combination of food that allows you to taste a little of everything that the restaurant offers. The queso fundido is flavorful and extra cheesy. I wish it didn't come with the blob of guacamole in the center. The tortillas are fresh. The carnitas is as good as most reviews state. I feel we were robbed a bit on the quantity of steak and shrimp but the quality makes up for it. The service was very fast and attentive. The main reason I came here was for my favorite dessert that you dont see too often on a Mexican restaurant menu. The Tres Leche cake here was yummy. We love this place! We've been here three times, so far, working our way through their extensive menu. This is one of the few restaurants we've been to where EVERYTHING we've tried is so delicious! We've tried the lobster enchiladas, octopus, calamari, pear salad, carnitas, queso with chorizo, chili pork colorado, chipotle ribs, butter cake, house margaritas, red sangria, and several other dishes. Every single one of them was bursting with flavor! Portion sizes are very generous, and the service has been top notch every time. I've tried quite a few Mexican places in San Clemente and Sol Agave has been my favorite so far. Their food was actually seasoned properly unlike some other spots. I tried the fish tacos and chicken fajitas and both were really tasty. I also really enjoyed my watermelon margarita. Fantastic fresh chips and spicy salsa with a separate dip of spicy refried beans dip. Then a great frozen coconut drink with a toasted coconut rim. Main entrees were an excellent (though somewhat expensive for the portion at $45) Chilean sea bass with a subtle rich sauce, and a huge carnitas plate with slow braised pork shoulder and especially flavorful pinto beans and all the fixings. What set this experience apart, however, was the excellent service. Our server Rodi was entertaining and engaging from the start, with a vivacious personality which helped set the fun and relaxing tone for one of our first post vaccination outings. She was observant and attentive, noticing as she was passing by to serve three other tables that my wife was shivering with cold (we were sitting outside in the early evening). She took it upon herself to light up the space heater, and when that didn't work, turned on and moved an adjacent table's heater to ours. All in a charming setting with servers all wearing masks and doing their best to keep guests separated. A fun place--we saw a bunch of (masked) servers sing Happy Birthday to a guest with sparkler candles. Will be back! read more

Mediocre at best, this place was a let down to the max. We ordered the guac taster, the lobster guac was awful, it was fishy and chewy we had a hard time finishing the bite we took. We also got the sugarcane steak app, the sugarcane tasted rotten, we got the steak rare, unfortunately here that means gray and unseasoned, it was very disappointing. We also got the Camarones Ala Diabla, for the price of the dish it's honestly shocking, you get 4 small shrimp. The best thing we had was the beans that came with the shrimp. Yesterday I went to have Dinner at Sol agave on Del Mar and there was a couple sitting in the Bar area right away I noticed the gentleman making rude comments towards the staff. When he got his food he told the manager that the food was awful that they needed to fire the chef. There was a big party of young girls celebrating a birthday they sang happy birthday and it bothered him apparently then by accident they dropped a plate and he got mad as well. The kitchen dropped something and he right away said a bad word and was like you have to be kidding me. When our waiter approached us i couldn't help myself and asked who the gentleman was and she said he is the owner I was shocked for the owner to express himself that way and didn't care that people heard him. All I have to say is I have been to this restaurant plenty of times and I have always loved their food and the service has always been great. Before I left I made sure to tell my waiter that the food was amazing to please let the cooks know and her service was excellent. read more

Walking down Del Mar, i heard distinctly danceable music and noticed a really pretty patio area off of a restaurant - Sol Agave! I stopped in, and every one, from the bus staff, to waiters and cooks, were all super-polite and friendly. The menu is enticing and so are their drinks. I hadn't planned to eat yet, so i had the Tortilla Soup (so rich and tasty) loaded with chicken, vegetables, herbs, and avocado and a Oaxacan Old-fashioned, with lime juice and mole bitters. Came here with friends to celebrate my birthday and it was a beautiful Saturday night in San Clemente. Pros we were seated quickly in outside seating area, our server Er was excellent and in a great mood, 1st time at this location been to the San Juan location and lived it so was excited to see this closer to home. I normally get the enchiladas or fish tacos but 3 of us decided to get the trio taco plate with chicken carnitas and beef and one friend ordered the fish taco plate. None of us finished our plate so the next day I asked my friends if they like the tacos and everyone replied I have had much better ... so that being said I will give them another try and update on next visit. Good food, good service but lacking transparency regarding charges. If you want happy hour, be sure to ask where to sit- happy hour only served at the bar and outside. When the bill comes be prepared to be charged an additional 3% for credit card payment as well as being taxed the additional 3%. If u find this unacceptable, bring cash. I was blown away by the food here- and I'm Mexican fyi. Carnitas we're UNBELIEVABLE. Mole enchilada very good & had more sweetness than other moles. Guac was fantastic but not spicy so ask to add jalapeños if you like it spicy. Side of potatoes with chorizo were delicious. The Chile Colorado was okay but I'd pass.
