My kiddo wanted to eat a chile relleno for her birthday, so I booked a reservation here for a party of 7 at 6:30p on their website the day before (they use Open Table). They have more than one location, but this one is located at the corner of Main Street and Mercantile, and there is a parking structure right next to it. We drove down Main Street from Jamboree Road towards MacArthur Boulevard, so we entered the parking structure from Gillette Avenue (where Izakaya Osen is), but I think there is an entrance from the Mercantile side, too (Gillette turns into Mercantile). SOL validates the parking ticket, maybe for 1.5hrs? We arrived a little after 6:30p and left a little after 8:00p and had to pay $1.50 when leaving the structure. The restaurant is spacious, so we probably would've been able to sit down right away without a reservation (but better safe than sorry). We ordered the coconut calamari ($19.00) and grilled sweet corn ($11.00) for starters, and I got the frozen guava margarita ($15.00+$2.00 guava). I ordered the shrimp chile relleno ($27.00) and asked for no cilantro and pico de gallo. The rest of the group ordered the short ribs 'Barbacoa' ($36.00), chef's special chile verde ($22.00), chile poblano relleno con elote ($19.00), filet & shrimp 'El Jefe" with rice and beans ($17.00+$4.00), carne asada burrito served wet with red salsa ($22.00+$3.50), and the shrimp chile relleno as well. The calamari came with 3pcs, but they were huge pieces. Still, very fresh and tender for their size. It came with a spicy mayo sauce mixed with cilantro. The sweet corn was shaved off the cob and mixed with the same spicy mayo, so it had a kick, but tasty. The chile relleno was served open style and not fried in egg batter as I typically see, but rather stuffed with arroz verde and cheese with plenty of shrimp on top. Even though I asked to skip the onion and cilantro garnish, there were sus-looking herbs cooked into almost everything...but I didn't taste any so maybe my cilantro radar was muddled by the margarita, lol. The dish was pretty spicy for me, but it was still yummy. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their dish, including the chips and salsa/bean dip at the beginning. I did ask about any birthday treat, and our server said that they do have one, and brought it out. It was fried tortilla chips with a scoop of whipped cream, drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce and topped with almond slices. When I initially reserved the table and put down "for birthday," I guess they didn't see it since it was on Open Table? Not a problem since I still was able to get my kiddo a birthday treat. I just didn't know that I was going to be charged $6.00 for it...not a big deal either, just a bit surprised. Either way, our server was very nice, food was pretty good, and they don't skimp on the alcohol. They seem to serve a lot of spicy food, so not a place I can frequent though. read more

SOL has never disappointed! We've been to the Newport Beach location a few times, but this was the first time at this Irvine location. A nice clean restaurant. Service was amazing, we were very well taken care of! We finally decided to try SOL Mexicana at the Irvine location, even though it's been around for a while. The restaurant is beautifully designed and has a warm, welcoming vibe. Our server, David, was fantastic--very kind and attentive. He took the time to understand our food allergies and made some thoughtful suggestions, which we really appreciated. The reason for the 4-star rating is the pricing. There's a sign at the entrance stating a 3% surcharge will be added to support their family-run business, which we understand. However, the pricing of the food itself felt a bit steep. Their specialty tacos are advertised as "large," but they're actually quite small--\$15 each, and if you want rice and beans, that's an extra \$4. My husband ordered two tacos and still left hungry. We came around 7pm and the sunset views totally lived up to the restaurant's name, beautiful atmosphere for a night out. Our server Zully was fantastic and took great care of us. I ordered the cucumber cooler with vodka, which was refreshing and well-balanced , definitely getting that again. For food, I had the pan-seared salmon, which was cooked nicely, though I wish the succotash portion was scaled back a bit since it didn't add much to the dish. My dad ordered the grilled octopus, and while the flavor was good, the portion was noticeably small for the price. A little menu transparency on portion size would go a long way here. Food also took longer than expected to come out, which is worth knowing if you're in a time crunch. Overall, SOL is a great spot for drinks and ambiance, and service was a highlight. The hostess was very friendly when entered the restaurant, asking to validate our parking, then what type of table we wanted, if we wanted to sit where we could watch the World Series and Monday night football. The server was right on the spot letting us know happy hour was still in effect and pointing out the specials for us. We ordered house margaritas, spicy ceviche, and Mexican corn. Both were prepared tableside. The ceviche was great, spicy and sweet, with a wonderful taste and texture. The Mexican corn was very good and had a sweeter flavor than expected. I've been frequenting this establishment for more than 5 years. I had my wedding dinner here 7 years ago bc I loved the food and customer service. I've seen management, staff, everyone come and go and while there are a few stand outs that have stayed to try to keep the magic going, it's obvious the customer service has come down significantly. Im actually not sure where the issue stems from. Over time I have made relationships with a select few over the years that I can see have tried to make things work. So this is no reflection on CERTAIN staff- but I can see the turnover and lack of customer service support and experience. Especially when Sol markets itself the way that they do which is high-end. With high end prices. Trust when I say I have no problem paying higher prices BUT THE SERVICE NEEDS TO MATCH. The customer service experience is lacking significantly which is extremely unfortunate based on the food and menu updateS that they have had. It's very basic customs, check in on your table, introduce yourself, give your table an update if your busy, making sure your table has cutlery, has water , taking their order on time, refilling drinks without being asked, - the most basic of basic- almost makes me want to come out of retirement! I frequent in the hopes I see people I know who will make my experience worth it but knowing full well at the same time I'll be disappointed if I'm not lucky enough to have that person. It's the risk I'm willing to take for the staff I've come to love and appreciate. Customer service will be this restaurant's downfall . Is it really that hard to find good customer service? Secondly they're flavorless. Believe it or not they don't even come with sour cream nor guacamole, but they include some slices of avocado. My wife enjoyed the Filet and Shrimp El Jefe Taco. Parking is in the structure adjacent, they will validate up to 90 minutes which I think is a little short if you are dining with a large group but doable with two people. I ordered the carne asada quesadilla after trying the chicken one at the Newport location previously. I gotta say I liked the chicken one better, feel like they skimped with the carne asada. The flavor was good nonetheless. The chipotle sauce is delicious and the avocado sauce is solid as well. A tad expensive for a quesadilla at $21 but the portion is generous and it comes with two sides of your choosing and I got the red rice and beans. There is also spicy slaw and quinoa salad available for side options. Red rice is seasoned well and delicious, beans were okay. The chips and salsa they bring out for you in the beginning is tasty.
