Food was good overall and it was nice that they were open past 8:30pm given a delay on my part arriving from the airport. Because I wasn't too hungry the food filled me up pretty quickly but it was a bit unfortunate that the short rib taco comes with just one single taco and not two, even though the one taco was pretty hefty! One of my friends got a tortilla soup kind of stew dish -- forgot the name-- and that definitely would be something I would recommend instead and goes well with the tortilla chips. The restaurant definitely had some Mexican influence in its interior design but I'm not sure why they put us in a corner especially since it felt hotter there especially since it seemed their A/C broke down! Back and reinforced in so many ways why I hope to remember to never come back. Came for happy hour got manager approval to honor that menu at 5:50pm. Sat at a high top, was busy but our waitress was an epic failure. Ordered two margaritas as it was on special. Got sweet corn and two happy hour tacos. The corn came fast enough was great as always. Tacos came almost 45' later, had to wave the waitress down for more beans and it took two times before it came. The food was so long in coming we thought hard about just leaving... just a few more minutes - 45' for two tacos ? Manager did come by to ask how things were and felt bad for our more than 45' wait said he'd take 25 off the bill, he came around again said he'd take 50 off, that was a surprise and we declined till we saw the bill. Look at the bill!!!No discount for happy hour, two new items we never ordered, yeah a discount but ended up paying for what we ordered for happy hour and margarita day discount. What a failure of service and cluster from this waitress. Unfortunately, we didn't have a great experience at Sol. The first time I came here was for a corporate happy hour, and I really enjoyed the drinks, so I wanted to bring my family back for dinner. We made Friday night reservations ahead of time, but still ended up waiting over 20 minutes because our table "wasn't ready." We didn't mind waiting at first since the bar area had a great vibe. We ordered margaritas (pictured) and chips & salsa, and once again, the drinks were fire. After the wait, we were seated at a table right in the middle of an archway/doorway, which felt awkward. We ordered a few tacos, ate, and left. The biggest disappointment was the service. If they couldn't accommodate reservations, they should have stopped taking them instead of making guests wait that long. Great drinks, but the overall dining experience fell short. read more

Used to love this place, but it's really gone downhill. We started with the Hot & Raw Tropical Ceviche, which had good flavor, but the beet and sweet potato chips served with it were completely soggy. The biggest disappointment was the Sizzling Sol Fajitas. The steak was underwhelming, and the fajitas were incredibly bland and lacking seasoning. For a dish that's supposed to arrive sizzling and packed with flavor, it missed the mark. I also ordered the Chicken Al Carbon, which was $19, and honestly, I'd rather have gone to Taco Bell and ordered a chicken quesadilla. It had more flavor and would have been a lot more satisfying. Another letdown was the chips and salsa. Sol used to serve seasoned chips that were one of the things I looked forward to, but they've changed them and they're just not good anymore. To top it off, we specifically reserved standard seating, but when we arrived they tried to seat us at a high-top table. Between the bland food, declining quality, and seating issue, this visit was a huge disappointment. There are too many great restaurants in Scottsdale to spend your money here. Food was excellent, service was attentive and ambiance was great. When it was time to pay the bill, the server informed us that the "system is down" and we needed to wait to get the bill. We waited awhile and then asked for the manager. We saw him approach a nearby table but he never came to ours. Finally, we wanted to get going so we estimated the price of our food and drinks, left cash on the table and departed. It was kind of weird. We estimated high and included enough for tax and tip. I hope it worked out. The poor server was helpless. I guess without technology, everything stops. I'm glad that I always carry cash. read more

My friend and I went to SOL Mexican cocina to partake in their happy hour. They have a limited menu but the tacos and marg were all delicious! Their salsa also tastes fresh and delicious with just the right kick which I loved. Our server was nice and let me and my friend have our time to yap between check ins. It was pretty busy but the noise wasn't loud and the service was still quick! Our food came out super fast after we ordered which we were impressed by. I've had better Mexican food at a fair number of other spots around the Phoenix metro. On top of that, the service was pretty average. They were polite but not especially warm or memorable. Coming in from the rain/monsoon we were seated quickly for lunch and our orders were taken immediately. Fried tortillas paired with black bean and salsa were brought our and that was a great starter, held back and not finishing the entire basket. Shrimp Taquitos- 4 pieces of nicely fried crispy bites of shrimp and crunch with a spicy sauce presentation. Duck Taco- well fried with the skin giving chicharron vibes and though it was only a leg/thigh portion I was able to make 3 tacos out of it. Great flavor with blackberry compote and diced red onions that were part of the plate. Mushroom Taco- packed a punch with the Queso Fresco as the saute mushrooms was very hearty and filling. This is a beautiful restaurant with great food. I highly suggest the queso fundido. The peel and eat shrimp appetizer is also amazing. The tortilla soup is packed with flavor. I checked out SOL Mexican Cocina for dinner on a Wednesday evening. Located in the Scottsdale Quarters, a charming entertainment district, I've always parked in the complimentary parking garage (the entrance is right next to SOL). They also have some street parking if that's more your style. Ambiance (4.5/5): Awesome vibes at SOL Mexican Cocina. I'd describe it as an upscale Mexican joint. It's trendy. It's modern. And it makes for a great date spot. I sat at a table. They also have bar seating. Service (4.5/5): My waitress did a great job taking care of us. She was friendly, attentive, and it was a smooth experience throughout. She was recently out of training and did a fantastic job. Drinks (N/A): I had an Arnold Palmer so not a lot to write home about. I will say that their Arnold Palmer is made with mango iced tea which is a nice touch. While I didn't dabble, they have an interesting list of cocktails, which includes margaritas of course. I'll have to try one out next time around. Food (4/5): They start you out with some free chips and salsa as you find at pretty much every Mexican restaurant. The difference here? The chips are a lot larger and circular. Our waitress told us that SOL focuses on smoke and seafood. While there were some appetizing appetizers and entrees, I focused on their taco selections. It's a large menu overall, including the tacos section. I went with the "Canarditas" Duck taco which is a nice play on words. "Canard" in French means duck. Carnitas is a popular Mexican meat for tacos. Put them together and you have "Canarditas." A deep-fried duck leg confit, a tequila-blackberry-serrano salsa, citrus, avocado, onions, and cilantro made this dish. Talk about a creative, although not traditional, taco. I guess you could slice meat off of your duck leg to make a taco using the three small tacos you're given, but I ended up combining everything bite-by-bite- The blackberry sauce gave some nice sweetness to the duck, which is typically served with a sweet sauce (think duck a l'orange at a French restaurant or Peking duck served with hoisin sauce at a Chinese restaurant). The sliced avocado was fresh. For an additional $4, you can add rice and beans. A solid (and interesting) taco, albeit not a huge portion size. If you're looking for a modern take on Mexican cuisine, in a trendy environment, and in a fun area, SOL makes for a great choice. read more

When we go to Scottsdale this was typically one of our favorite stops; however I believe their menu changed recently. We have been going there for years and around March or April there was a change. I use to order their lunch torta (w chicken, carnitas, carne asada) but that's off the menu. I ordered a burrito yesterday and the meat was different. It wasn't bad but before they used a different cut and it was much more tender so that threw me off. I miss their seasoned tortilla chips but love their salsa and bean dip. We love their ice tea which is a main reason we go there so glad that has not changed. I think their prices have gone up but that's understandable with what's going on w the economy but nothing that will keep you away. This restaurant is beautiful inside. The patio was pretty dirty and a little dull in the feels and design. My work team (2 colleagues) took me here for (a surprise) Administrative Professional day lunch, along with my dog, who comes to work with me, almost daily. We were seated on the patio. My manager called before we left. So I am not sure why the foolishness about the dog...either you allow dogs on the patio or not. If you have allowed foolishness from a dog owner, that's on you. Li Li was not jumping, antsy, etc. I feel like at least 3 people came up to us with some dog rules including the waiter. She is more disciplined than most little human kids. Why would I let my dog on the table, on the furniture?...Annoyance #1. Annoyance #2, I did not appreciate the waiter, Armando (?-his name on our receipt is partially missing) and his microaggressions. Dude, GROW UP! "Ladies first," but skipped me. He did not want to wait on me. There are 3 humans at my table: Me, my manager; a woman and our colleague, a male. He could not look me in the eye. He could not/would not answer the questions I had about the dishes. I could not tell if the food was tasty or if I was just disgusted at his behavior. There was more oddness from him with me, but the bottom line, MY experience was off putting. I did not enjoy my surprise lunch from my team. I am shocked this waiter does not know how to comport himself, it is not like I am an alien. Had it been me and diverse friends, we would have left. I just can't figure this location out ... the service is all over the board from one month to the next. The food is always the same but sometimes service is great and other times it falls flat. An amazing woman server noticed our lack of service (us looking around for help) and came to us to inquire about what we needed. She basically saved the day since even two managers were standing around talking while observing but neither noticed us until I actively sought one's attention. After trying to eat at 2 different restaurants with 2+ hour waits, my family and I ended up at this place. I would say it was a slightly upscale typical Mexican restaurant. They have a lot of great margarita and other drink options. And their complementary chips were really really good. They were basically mini tortilla circles with good seasoning. They came with salsa and a black bean dip and we ordered guac as well. For our entrees my sister got a chicken quesadilla which was ginormous, mom, brother, and dad got various tacos, and I got the octopus. We all enjoyed our food. For the octopus entree, it came with a good amount of octopus which I was really happy about. The restaurant wasn't very busy between their inside and outside seating which was very surprising for a Saturday night but I'd say it was a nice atmosphere. Well, they have changed their menu and took off some of things we loved. Service was a bit slow (drinks, food and trying to get the bill). The big problem we had tonight was one of our members is Vegan and has been for years. We were very clear about it- but when the food came and he was eating we noticed that it must have had cheese! Then the second thing he ordered had cheese too (thank goodness he checked )! When we notified the server, instead of saying I'm so sorry- they blamed the kitchen. We have always enjoyed Sol Mexican Cantina- but, chips no longer have the spice on them, new menu, missing favorite sauces and we are going to have be cautious with the Vegan requests too. It's a large, well-appointed restaurant with seating both inside and outside. The chips were fresh and crisp and the salsa and bean dip they were served with were delicious. I had the grilled calamari and my spouse had the Tacos "El Jeffe." Although they are in the entree section of the menu, they are both appetizer-sized portions. The former was four strips of calamari steak and the latter were two tacos stuffed with both steak and shrimp. Not a good experience at all. Had to keep waiving down staff to get some simple help such as tortillas for the fajitas we ordered. Portions are also very small for the price. Definitely better food for this price point in the area, Chipotle across the street would've been more satisfying and a more pleasurable experience. read more

We went here for my birthday. Unfortunately, I'm super popular and a bunch of people wanted to celebrate with me. We had a hard time finding a place where I could make a reservation for 12+ on such short notice. The downside is that for a bill that large means a mandatory gratuity and the service wasn't very good. The server disappeared for a long time after taking the first round of drinks. My wife asked for a glass of water three times, never received one. My dad asked for salsa with his meal, never got it. We asked for an extra plate, never received it.
