I have patron this salon for years. I called today to let them know that I would be 5 minutes late due to traffic and was actually 10. My nail tech was unaware of my tardiness and was already servicing another client. The owner argued that she sent the tech a text. How does one ensure an employee gets a text when they are workIng. I have been coming to this establishment since they opened; only come like three to four times a year for a pedicure so when I come I want to sit back and relax. Got here around 12:40. She sat me in the one chair left and then said "the chair is broken". For my entire pedicure I had to scoot the chair up to the person doing the pedicure cause "it broke this morning" and it kept on sliding back. It was not only annoying but more importantly NOT relaxing for me (especially since i only do this like 3 - 4 times a year). After she scrubbed my feet, another chair was open she said "I want to move you to another chair to do your polish"..... well that takes like three minutes to do the polish and I have a bad back and did not want to move for just three minutes. I did talk to the manager and she was very nice to take 50% off. I will go back again. HOWEVER i told her that IF the chair was broken, you do not put a customer in a broken chair, simple as that! Something that was supposed to be a special treat for me but it was not, I felt like they did not care how I would feel sitting in a broken chair and have to scoot up like every minute. I'm downgrading to a 3. Hadn't been here much since my original post in 2009, but I had some time to kill while waiting o the pharmacy and was desperately in need of a haircut so I went over. Sitting at the desk were 2 bored looking women. 1 didn't look up from her magazine the other was the one assigning people to technicians. On the right side of the spa was a bunch of employees sitting around, didn't seem to be much going on in the way of nails (couldn't see the pedi area). The girl yelled over to the other side and was talking to someone about cutting my hair. Uhm. the place was dead, I was CERTAIN someone could do it. there was about 5 minutes of back and forth before finally a woman decided to cut my hair. Now, I don't mean to sound nitpicky, but I felt slighted. I'm polite, I don't smell and I'm a good conversationalist when the opportunity arises. On the left side where the hair salon part was, there were a bunch of employees chatting, laughing, giggling while 1 woman was getting her hair cut and styled. This went on all but the last 5 minutes of my time there. It was just unprofessional overall. The woman who cut my hair...she did a phenomenal job (I still feel guilty for cheating on my usual hairstylist) but she did great in the cut and the styling. She did so well, I might go back but just for her and no one else. She made sure I had magazines and she made conversation with me and she was quite nice. Still tho, it chapped my ass that it seemed like originally she didn't want to cut my hair, or really do anything except sit over with the nail girls and talk. I thought the cut was a little pricey but then what do I know about pricing? And then BIG shocker as I was checking out: no tipping on your card. Who the heck carries cash? It's not some craphole questionable nail salon, supposedly its a 'Day Spa' so I'd imagine tipping would be allowed on the check. I had a little cash. If I could have tipped on my card she would have gotten more, but hindsight the smaller tip could suffice since I felt slighted originally. Ok I'm kidding, she did a great job and I'd have tipped her more, but I just gave her all my cash. I really think they need to re-train the front desk people...they were just there, I didn't fee welcomed or anything. In fact I felt like i inconvenienced them by showing up. read more

DH and I stopped in for pedicures. Normally we go to a cute little place up the street. It looked nice, but looks were deceiving. The "express" pedi was $28- I've had better foot massages and they actually clean up my toes for cheaper. The massage (Which hey, that's what I'm really here for) was poor to say the best about it. The chair was ok. But then I looked around and EVERYONE but me had a heat pack on their shoulders. Not cool pedi guy, who didn't give me his name. The spa pedi was $35 or so, and then the rest were about $60-70. Hubby's pedi was about $37(the one option they offer for men) and he said the massage was pretty lacking. AND THE REASON FOR MY ONE STAR REVIEW: I watched one of the girls while I was getting my toes dried, and she double dipped the wax stick while waxing a girls eyebrows. YUCK YUCK YUCK. I was in need of a touch up for my eyelashes and the girl put SO much glue on my lashes that they were all clumpy and stuck together. They then tried to charge me to have them removed! I love all cultures and nationalities but these people spoke very broken English! No one at the front desk spoke better than a 5th grade level-- therefore extremely difficult to communicate. After finally finding the Solace Spa that we wanted (there are 2 in the complex), Jamie M. and I decided on a hot cream pedicure. I think we both decided on this one because it was the cheapest at $35. Although this was more than I had paid for a pedicure in the past, it was WELL worth it. WARNING: Once you go Solace, you can never go back! I've been getting pedicures on a regular basis for the past 4 years now and this was the best one I've had by far. The woman who did my pedicure was very attentive to my needs (could even tell I was parched and kept filling a water glass for me). The chairs were magnificent; the hot pads put on my face and shoulders melted away all my tension, and the pedicure was just icing on the cake. I feel very spoiled now and don't know if I will be able to get a pedicure anywhere else! read more

Yesterday a friend and I went in for both a manicure and pedicure. We opted for the "spa pedi" at $45, but they "upsold" us to the "ocean spa pedi" for $55. Whatever, that is how spas make money, its fine with me. I would have said no if I truly didn't want it. The ocean spa pedi was just wonderful. There is a scrub, a mask, and a parrafin treatment. It lasted about an hour and it was amazing. They also offered us tea, water, soda or "wine". We chose white wine and it was more of a sparkling pink, but it was good, and there was no extra charge, we each had 2 glasses. When we moved on to mani, it was a good, basic mani (the "express" at $18). I paid $7 extra for a french manicure. She did a great job, though the white part is a little larger than I would have chosen. In all, we spent $77 ($55 pedi, $15 mani - they give a discount for doing more than one service, and $7 french). It was a wonderful escape for my friend and I, and we'll definitely go back. Oh, and I have a friend who goes there every 2 weeks, so she suggested I go to Lee. I had Lee, and I dont know who my friend had. Also, they have about 30 different kinds of pedicures there, its amazing! read more

THE BAD ~ Sometimes the chemical smells are strong ~ I have been left under the nail light and didn't see my technician again. At all!!! lol. They either were gone or forgot about me. I would just summon someone and they would take care of me. THE GOOD ~ Always nice people ~ Great customer service ~ I like being treated special ~ I always get offered a beverage during my pedicure ~ Extremely clean location ~ Always courteous ~ I got a coupon in the mail this year OVERALL I have been visiting them since 2007 and recommend them. SUSAN!!!! I rarely ever write reviews but I had to do this one. I am VERY particular about my nails. I know exactly what I like and how they're supposed to look and feel. Add to that the fact that I only get liquid gel nails and I can be a very tough critic. Not many people are good with liquid gel, making them too thick or uneven but SUSAN is AMAZING!! It was my first time there and I'll never go to another nail tech while I'm in this area. They look and feel so natural. The shape is perfect and the hand massage at the end really sealed the deal. I stopped here for a mani/pedi since the reviews on here seemed good and it was really close to my house. Anyway, maybe I caught this place on a bad day because while it looks nice on the inside, the service I received was so-so if anything. For starters, I came here early when it was slow and a lot of workers were in the back munching on noodles. After being directed to a pedi chair, it took the girl another 10 mins before she actually started on my feet. I opted for a gel mani that did come out nice but the girl cut my cuticle and I only noticed it was bleeding after I placed it into the uv lamp spot. I don't think anyones ever cut my cuticle that bad and not certainly to the point where it drew blood. Anyway, I might give the place one more try but for now I'm steering clear. read more

I have been going to this solace for 8 years now, and this past summer I received one of the most painful and half-*ssed waxing jobs of my life. I am a license practitioner and know the proper steps to waxing and they did not follow them; after bleeding, shaking, and almost loosing conscious I made sure to tip well and get the hell out. Only to realize when I had gotten home that multiple hairs were left, wax was stuck to my body, and there was more blood in my pants then I knew what to do with. I did not want to resort to leaving this review but after management poorly handled the situation and was unable to refund me my $70 for the most painful 40 mins of my life (2nd most painful after childbirth) I thought I would come here and help someone else from going through that experience. Not very nice people and the work they do can be done at any other salon on route one with half the cost and double the the quality. This salon peaked in quality in 2018 and has been on a steady decline of services since. read more

New receptionist a little aloof at times, but such a sweet girl. Can't help but like her. Atmosphere is great and the little extra perks are great. Went here with a friend who is a big fan. Very nice on the inside. The chemical smell is pretty strong, though. The pedicure area is really nice, with massage chairs and a little shelf for your purse. They offer you a drink, water or juice or wine, I think. They give you a menu of services -- you need to actually look at it, because they will ask you which type of pedi you want, and there are aobut 12 types! I got the peppermint pedi for $60, and it was nice. The tech who did my pedicure was Super thorough. Cute shoes are tough on my feet, and she made them feel and look much better. I am always nervous they're going to cut my feet, but she did a perfect job. I will probably be back! NOTE: There are 2 spas with this name in the plaza. I have been so pleasantly surprised by the evolution of this great local day spa. I guess its location in a strip shopping area fooled me not to expect too much - go in and have a quick pedicure or manicure now and then. Well, I am a total convert to this place. The new masseuse, Lena, has healing hands. And Dolly's experience in facials puts her as one of the top in D.C., after her days working with Senators and Congress on Capitol Hill. She knows her stuff. I also must admit that their ability to take last-minute appointments works great for my busy-mom schedule. And, their thoughtful service details such as the heated shoulder pads, drink offers, etc. are so nice. The only thing I can point out that could be improved is their inventory of take-home products. They always seem to be out of the skin care products I need! Anyway, John and Michelle Nguyen, the owners are doing a great job here along with their great staff!! read more

This is just a review for a Mani & Pedi! I'm always hesitant trying out new places for manicures and pedicures...well, because I'm a slight germaphobe! However, I read pretty good reviews about this place and decided to give it a try as my typical mani/pedi salon was booked. I called and made an appt the same day for a spa pedi and regular mani. Jessica did an amazing job! She was very nice and courteous. She didn't rush at all which was pleasant. I was offered wine, juice and water. The one thing I was very appreciative of, is that she didn't try to upsell me at all! I hate when you go in for one thing and they try to tell you everything else that you "need." I'm a lifetime Alexandrian, and I remember this area of Route 1 before it was renovated. When I first learned that there would be a day spa in this area, I was very skeptical that any spa in that location could be anything but shady. Its been four years since my first visit, and I now can't imagine going anywhere else. If you're sick of dealing with traffic out to Tysons or hunting for a parking space in Old Town, Solace might be just what you've been waiting for, especially if you need something done at the last minute. The staff has bent over backwards for me on more than one occasion when I needed to get my hair or nails done for a last minute event. The pedicure area is clean and nicely appointed, with big leather massage chairs. The free soft drinks and complimentary heated shoulder wraps are a nice touch. The spa treatment area in the back (behind the double doors) is small but serene, with a water fountain in the center, dim lights, and relaxing music. I've never felt interrupted or rushed whenever I had a service done at Solace (as I have at other places like Sugar House and Andre Chreky). The ambience and staff of Solace whisk you away and you soon forget that you're in a strip mall. Bottom Line: Its not exactly Red Door spa, but its close to home, very accessible, and reasonably priced, with helpful staff. read more

I have been going here for two years for pedicures. Three weeks ago I also got an SNS manicure. Two weeks later I discovered two of the nails lifted off of my fingers halfway and I had to cut the "polish" off so it didn't get stuck on something and rip my nail off. I went to Solace today and was told that happens with SNS nails although people I talked to, including to ladies that work there, said they never had seen this happen. When I spoke to the manager she told me the employees work hard so she couldn't give me much of a discount to try SNS again. With what I paid to get the nails off, it was more than the usual charge. I like this place! Its one of the best I've ever been to. My go to person no longer works here but, this is still a great place to go. Every person on staff seems to know what they are doing and they treat each person like they are their own client. The few times that I've gone to someone who wasn't my usual go to, they were friendly and kind and very professional. I've never walked away disappointed or feeling like i wasted money. My Mani and Pedi always held up for a while and my eyebrows always looked great. When i want to treat my friends to a mini spa day this is the place that i bring them. I've been going to Solace for about six months for nails and waxing. I love that they can always fit me in quickly, even if I call on a Saturday morning. The staff is competent, friendly, and professional. I don't think the prices are that expensive, but the last spa I went to was in Old Town, where prices are generally a little bit higher (and appointments are harder to come by). In my opinion, if you want a cheap manicure, buy a bottle of Sally Hansen manicure in a bottle (not judging--I avail myself of this option regularly!). And you should really never cheap out when it comes to putting hot wax anywhere on your body. read more

Ok, my friend and I went to this place for massages. When I called I was under the impression we would be able to get massages at the same time, in the same room. Not possible. Only one room, one bed. Anyway Don did my massage, and it was the best hour ever. Can't say the same for my friend, hers was done by Jackie. She said the massage was good, however in both of our cases, there are no hot stones for the hot stone massage, there actually hot towels. Not was I expected. Was offered free wine or champagne only after the massage. We also had facials, which were amazing. Overall it's close for me, so I may return. Definitely could be better. read more

I have been going here for years. I had my nails done a couple weeks ago and they did not come out well. I thought it was a one off and went back today. I did a regular polish peach color on my toes, which even though I had my finger nails done are smudged. I asked for gel on my fingers in the same color as my toes. She started painting them and they are neon orange. I said that is not the same color and she said yes it is. One coat and I said no it's not the same and I can't wear neon orange to my daughters graduation. She got another color and tried it and it was red. I said please just finish because I need to leave. She continued to paint my nails and noticed that there was something on my nail, but ignored it and finished. I had to go or I would have asked her to do my nails again. I am not sure if they have had turn over on their staff, but they are not the same as as before. Also, I think they have changed the quality of their polish because my nails are all bumpy. Phat, one of the head stylists, does wonders w/ my fine, short hair and I always leave feeling like a million bucks!!! He's sooooooooooooooo good and their prices are more than fair for being a spa. The nail technicians are always great, too. I can't give as high marks to the 'wellness' peeps in the back that do massages, facials, etc. I treated my mom to a facial and the older woman who did her facial made me feel like a bad daughter b/c I didn't buy the most expensive treatment, and she did this in front of my mom. I have been a customer at Solace Day Spa for years and have spent A LOT of money here, especially when you add in very generous tips. Unfortunately, it seems to be really declining due to high turnover and a disorganized front desk. There rarely seems to be a receptionist, or if there is, they're unprofessional. As a result, invariably when I call to make an appointment I am immediately put on eternal hold, or, often it will go into a voicemail that does not allow you to leave a message. So, if you need to reschedule, you can't, and when you finally do connect with someone live after multiple tries, they're rather inflexible. I always reschedule well in advance of my appointment, yet when I arrive, the technician will make a comment. What I've found the most discouraging is the lack of respect the employees have often shown customers and each other. They tend to quarrel amongst themselves and, most importantly, they have conversations with each other in Vietnamese in front of the customer. I am certain they are making fun of the customer which I find extraordinarily disrespectful. Surprisingly, the owner often participates in the dialogue, when in actuality she should be discouraging the behavior and insisting that her employees speak English at all times which would only benefit them. There are actually some technicians that struggle with English, which I also find frustrating when I try to communicate with them what I would like. Finally, I'm not sure about the overall sanitary conditions. If the technicians are not with a customer, they're huddled in a room next to the pedicure area preparing their food and eating (and watching videos with the volume unmuted). I'm also not 100% sure they're tools are being properly sanitized, or their products are up to date. Because I've experienced this disrespect first hand on several occasions, including this latest visit, I'm going to be bringing my good business elsewhere. read more
