ST just completed an installation of 11 SunPower panels on my home in Greenbrae. Having spent a frustrating 6 months going through the marketing 'gauntlet' with two large online solar retailers, been told numerous things that were blatantly incorrect, and finding their documents both misleading and poorly drafted, I nearly gave up on solar. But I decided to give it one more go after seeing recommendations for ST on a neighborhood website. I called Nick Bahrenburg and was immediately impressed by his knowledge of the product and the industry. He took the time to walk me through the technical issues, the installation process and a host of other questions -- very nice guy -- and I felt no pressure. I was comfortable with him from the get-go. You pay a bit more for the SunPower panels, but I think their efficiency and useful life will offset the added cost. Solar Technologies did a great job on my home - 14 panels, and in my September bill, PG&E owed me money! Their sales rep, Nick Bahrenberg, was helpful, very knowledgeable, and always on time at appointments. The installers did the job in one day, and everything passed the county inspection first time. I interviewed four companies, and Nick and ST were clearly the best. The 335 watt/panel Sun Power panels are assembled in the US, and have a terrific warranty and a long life. So glad I finally took this step, and having a great company just made it all easy. read more

After considerable research on solar systems, components, installers and prices, I decided to go with a SunPower system installed by Solar Technologies in the east bay. Our system installation was just completed a couple days ago and I can report that we were extremely pleased with how everything went. (We haven't yet started generating any solar power obviously, so I cannot comment on the system's actual performance, so this review is mainly as to the experience with Solar Technologies, as opposed to the performance of the panels themselves.) After shopping quite a bit, I was convinced I wanted the best panels available. We also decided to BUY a system, as opposed to leasing one from one of those companies that solicit homeowners relentlessly so they can generate power for themselves using your roof. SunPower was recommended most highly everywhere I looked, so the next main decision was to select an installer. We got bids from several companies from across the bay area, including a few that were recommended on SunPower's own website. Interestingly, SunPower has various levels of their recommendations of installation companies, so naturally we were looking for the installer that SunPower rated most highly. Among that group we identified Solar Technologies, although we did get bids from at least one other SunPower-recommended installer. My contact at ST was James Hamill-Stout. James came out to the house, presented the options and pros/cons of each system, and made recommendations. Since we were already pretty sold on SunPower, we didn't consider any alternative brands and the main issues involved the size of the system, placement of the panels, type of inverter to be used and several other details--and, of course, who would sell it to us and install it. Most of the technical issues had already been addressed in prior bids, but James was great about explaining all the issues and criteria and his proposal was pretty much consistent with the other plans we had been offered with one big difference--price. ST's bid was several thousand dollars less for the same essential system that others had bid for much more. Given the cost savings, the fact that ST was rated highest by SunPower's own website, and the great interface with James, our decision was pretty easy at that point. ST then proceeded to procure the permit for the system from our town. Several weeks later, the ST crew--led by Francois--arrived as scheduled to install the system. They were great. I have no experience with solar panels so I can't say much about that aspect (other than the fact that it all looks good from down here), but the real fine points of installation on a system like this have to do with how they tie it into your existing infrastructure, i.e. how finished does the wire piping look, where do they place the inverter and connectors, how well is the painting done on newly installed parts, etc.? There's a lot more to this than just screwing mounting brackets down to your roof and slapping some panels on them. Francois' team did a fantastic job, selecting a discreet interior location for the inverter, finding the least invasive means of connection, finishing the installation in an extremely neat fashion, and painting everything to match the house. (It helps if you have your own paint available for matching purposes). After 2 and a half days on site, ST's team had finished the work; they then got the permit signed off by the City the very next day with no issues and we were basically done. Really easy. So now, we're just waiting to get signed up with PG&E and will look forward to a lot of free energy. In sum, a great experience with ST. I am not in the habit of writing a lot of reviews but these guys did a great job and were extremely price-competitive as well, so I feel I should let others know about our experience. I have no hesitation about recommending James, Francois and the folks at ST. read more

We researched solar panels and solar installation companies for nearly a year before we decided to purchase Sunpower panels using Solar Technologies. Our salesperson, Patrick Sterns was really knowledgeable and worked hard to make sure we got what we needed. Even to the point to letting us charge the system on our credit card to get the points! Francois Hunter led our installation crew and he went above and beyond, installing the panels on the roof symmetrically and placing the inverter components out of sight. They even painted the conduit with the house paint so it wouldn't be noticeable! And finally, Charles Chase made sure our wireless connection with Sunpower monitoring was up and running. We made the right choice to purchase Sunpower panels and the best choice with Solar Technologies. We couldn't be happier. read more

We selected Solar Technologies after researching the various solar companies in our area. While there were some good ones, we selected Solar Tech because they were the most responsive, came out to meet with us and patiently answered all our questions. Our rep, Nick, was knowledgeable, fully committed to make sure we understood everything and designed our 5kwh solar panel system. (Really a nice guy too which sold us on doing business with Solar Tech) While it took four months before installation because of the demand, we were kept abreast of their progress. The installation was done in two days in Feb. 2019 by an excellent crew who also took the time to explain the system and its operations. We love the monitoring app which allows us to see our usage and the energy produced by our solar panels. Even on cloudy days, we're seeing energy production. We're happy with our system and happy to be less dependent on PG&E. We highly recommend Solar Technologies. read more

We Had a terrific experience with Solar Technologies as our installers. Jason was good humored and able to patiently work through the process with us and answer our many questions. The installers were very professional and easy to work with and they were very sensitive to the esthetics of our home with regard to the placement of the equipment. The support staff at the office was very responsive, even to the point of returning emails on a holiday weekend. We had a minor glitch when the city inspector said we needed to do some extra grounding to come up to code and Solar Technologies worked with the city to make all that happen promptly. All in all, it was a painless experience and our bills have gone from $300-plus a month, down to just the gas, at about $80 or so. I now don't worry about having a fan or heater plugged in because it will not cost us extra and we are not impacting Mother Earth either. A win-win decision all the way and a very professional company to deal with. read more

Obviously, having our own personal solar project on the roof of our home is a financially attractive thing to do. Having worked for over thirty years for a large privately owned engineering and construction company, I felt very interested in initiating the project with Solar Technologies and their very capable staff. It has only been about 6 weeks since our system was installed and the good memories of the quality work performed by a wide variety of Solar Technologies' personnel are still fresh in my mind. -First, after discussing the project with a staff member at the Walnut Creek office, Mr. Zweli Miller was scheduled to come out from the Walnut Creek office with his solar surveying instruments and to determine the correct location and layout, number of panels, tree trimming, and interconnection with PG&E. While Mr. Miller was here, he recommended that we call PG&E and asked them to replace the cable that connected from the street to the house because of arcing marks and age-cracked conductor insulation. Our cable replacement was completed that very day. -Next, we reviewed and signed the proposal that was spot-on the correct size for our needs. -After preparing the design documents and applying for permits, James Donalson's electrician crew members came up from Santa Cruz to replace the original breaker boxes on the side of our 1952 built ranch style house with an expanded version that was safer and accommodated the power input from the to be installed PV solar panels on our roof. In addition to working with PG&E, this work was done with full cooperation and coordination with our county and city permits and inspection departments that reviewed and inspected before and after the installations were completed. Our local city inspector was very vocal about the fine electrical interconnenction to PG&E that was done with the new Solar Technologies electrical power panel equipment. In fact, the inspector personally showed me the work inside the panel, the professional layout and installation of the PV Panels, conduits, cable, and multiple electrical power panels. -I was glad that Mr. Francois Hunter, the Installation Foreman from the Walnut Creek office, was on site with the city inspector to hear the praise for all of the Solar Technologies' work and equipment. -The electrical power Inverter was registered by Solar Technologies with the manufacturer, a monitoring account was setup for me, and the system has been running ever since. -PG&E technical staff came out and inspected the system and were very pleased with it, easily passing their inspections for interconnection. As an engineer I looked at many of the solar companies offering installations in the bay area. I needed a large system based on my usage and the sunpower panels offered the best efficiency and the least number of panels to fit my needs. I was impressed by the information and service I was provided by Jisang Youn who was my primary sales interface and he remained in contact all through from start to finish answering questions and keeping me informed about what was going on. When it was time to install the system Mark and Steve did the work. They were professional and efficient. I was dreading the final inspection but a company representative came out and stayed before and after the inspection to be sure that everything went well. When the inspector came he saw that solar technologies did the installation and he passed the system quickly as he was familiar with the quality of their work. The system has been up and running for about 2 months. December 2016 had few sunny days so I could not judge the output. January is quite different and I am seeing outputs close to those expected. Longer days and better sun angles in summer will surely allow for better output. I could not be happier with the entire process and results. I have already recommended solar technologies to some of my friends. read more

Just completed my first full year of electricity generation from a 16 solar panel installation by Solar Technologies and I am more than pleased with the results. Yes, I reserved judgment for one year to be happy not only with the upfront contracting and installation interactions, but also with the internet service, system reliability and savings they promised-- zero issues since startup and almost 8% greater electricity production than forecast. To be fair regarding the forecast, Solar Technologies informed me before installation that their modeling is conservative and I could get 5-6% more energy using the particular SunPower panels they recommended for my job. Before selecting Solar Technologies, I had entertained a couple of competitor quotes. Solar Technologies' price was competitive, but not significantly different than some. However, now considering that I got more power than estimated, the price based on actual kWh production looks very good--not saying that would be case for every installation ST does. Aside from competitive price, my decision to go with Solar Technologies was based on several other factors: 1) referral from an energy professional familiar with Solar Technologies' work quality 2) clear technical explanations, sophisticated modeling, no overt pressure to immediately sign a contract and good follow up on all my questions by Nick Bahrenburg, the consultant/agent. Nick was very easy to work with in the week or two before I committed. 3) desire to maximize solar energy production from a limited side roof area of my house (my spouse did not want solar panels on the front/street-side roof; SunPower panels offered by ST produce about 20% more power than similar sized panels offered by most competitors) The Solar Technologies installation team was very professional, courteous and sought my approval on every detail of equipment and power line placement...even painted the wiring conduit to match my house exterior. They were very thorough in cleaning the job site daily before leaving. Also, I really like the internet monitoring they installed with my job. With just a few touches on my P.C., IPad or IPhone, I can instantly see a variety of solar production data and charts in hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or specified calendar date ranges. I appreciate that ST did not try to up sell me on panels mounted beyond the roof area I desired. Our total monthly electricity usage could have easily justified a larger solar system but, knowing my ROI desires, Nick designed a size that would quicken recovery of the investment. The system was sized only large enough to offset most of the very expensive PG&E Tiers 3 and 4 kWh costs (twice the rates of Tier 1 & 2). Due to a relatively large house with two AC's and a pool, our monthly energy consumption is always well into the Tier 4. Solar has essentially offset Tiers 3 and 4 on my bill, cutting the PG&E kWh supplied portion of my electricity by 55% over the first year and my total PG&E electricity costs by more than 65%. With the monthly savings, along with a 30% Federal Tax Credit this past tax season, I should realize fully cost recovery inside of seven years-- easily consistent with the ROI estimate provided by Nick based on my home's historical energy usage. After a full year, I have no doubts about the decision to go with Solar Technologies. read more

We found Solar Technologies through a good friend who was in the solar business for several years. Tim Glanville was our sales person. He was thorough, patient and did multiple site plans to fit our budget and still fit our power needs. Our installer, Ricky and his team removed our old pool solar system in one day. They were efficient, clean and hauled everything away. We love the look of our new panels, more importantly, our PG & E bills which ranged from 350.00 to 700.00 per month are now between 10.00 to 30.00! Great job Solar Technologies! read more

Possibly the worst experience of my life. Panels have been up and producing for almost two months. PGE is being credited with the energy I am producing and are still charging me top dollar on top of that!! Solar Technologies was to have taken this project thru from start to finish. They informed me their job is done and the problem with the meter install is because I requested a "special" meter. Jarrett McGuckin, their consultant, was advised from day one that I did not want a smart meter, was on the opt-out program, and told me there would not be a problem. Guess What?! The inital application reflected the fact I was an opt-out customer and chose to have a cellular meter installed (option B) on the application form. Now it is a problem and Solar Technologies has informed me it is MY problem. Nothing changed from the original application yet they inform me because of the "change" the new meter cannot be installed. Worst customer service. When I called Jarrett McGuckin and expressed my dissatisfaction he began screaming into the phone "what do you want me do?" This is their customer service!! I spoke with other solar companies regarding their policies even with an opt-out customer and they all state they take the project thru from start to finish. I would NEVER recommend Solar Technologies to anyone!! I am now at the mercy of PGE to try and get a hookup and have been on hold for hours with every department they transfer me to. Also, PGE was quite upset with the fact Solar Technologies turned the system on without the PTO (permission to operate) and advised I turn the system off as problems could occur. I didn't turn the system on and do not know how to turn it off. Jeff Parr, owner of Solar Technologies said he would send his "trouble shooter" out and assess the panel problem and turn the system off. Never came out, and I never heard from anyone. Jarrett McGuckin, who I wound up hanging up on in the middle of his screamfest proceeded to send me a text message advising what a wonderful job they did! I also contracted with them in January and the system didn't install until June. Jarrett said 6 to 8 or 8 to 10 weeks out. I have paid for my system in full, $57,000.00 so there is no incentive for Solar Technologies. Was on the phone with PGE last night and a supervisor help me complete and submit an application they had no record of receiving from Solar Technologies that needed to be submitted to their Building Renovations Dept. Overwhelming experience, truly upsetting. I wish I would have gone with Santa Cruz Solar who has been in business 41 years. read more

I recently had solar installed on my home in Danville by Solar Technologies. I could not have been more happy with the process and outcome. It's clear that ST prides themselves on everything they do, and really have the customer experience in mind. We interviewed 3 other companies, and although ST wasn't the cheapest bid (They weren't the most expensive either), we were impressed with their reputation in the area, as well as with the product they recommended for our roof. We decided to go with the SunPower Equinox system that has factory integrated inverters built into each panel. The 25 year warranty covers both the panel and inverter for 25 years. Every other system we looked at had fine print for 10 years. We are very excited to have solar spinning our meter backwards, and know we chose the best company and product to ensure it continues to do so for the next 25+ years! This is how great this company is: 1 year ago, I started looking into solar for my house. I got three quotes and plans and chose Solar Technologies hands down. The sales guy, Nick, was professional, smart, relaxed, and flexible. I have lots of roof space so he came up with a plan for my main roof to cover over 90% of my energy. For a number of reasons we could not follow through last year, but Nick was understanding about that. One year later and we are ready to do it. Nick at Solar Technologies responded right away to my email. He had kept our roof specs and designs and was ready to start. We consulted with our roofer and the roof we were to put panels on had about 10 years of life left, but our other flat roof had 30 years. Nick switched the plans without comment. We made a whole new plan with fewer panels but with the best panels (Sun Power). Installation was a breeze and Jeff (the project manager) brought in our own roofer to help with the work. This did nothing except instill confidence because our roofer has been working on our house for more than 10 years. Sun Power has an AP that we put on our phones and we can see our hourly energy generation. SO cool! There is also a 30% tax credit that goes along with this. We are very happy with our new panels and with Solar Technologies. read more

We had thought about solar for years but never spent the time to research and follow through on it. Last fall some reps from Sungrade Solar came knocking and next thing we knew we were contemplating going with a PPA agreement where they would put up the panels at no immediate cost to us, but we would agree to buy our electricity from their finance company for the next 20 years. But I'm the type who needs to research any decision thoroughly, and thankfully I did before going forward because once I started really researching I found out that different solar companies use very different equipment and designs. I think going solar in any way you can do it is still going to save you $ vs. sticking with PG&E rising rates, but if you want the maximum return you should consider buying your system outright (with a solar loan if necessary) and going with the most efficient panels which are manufactured by SunPower . And if you want a company who makes the whole process completely understandable, efficient and trouble-free, I highly recommend Solar Technologies. Our sales rep/engineer James Hamill-Stout was absolutely wonderful to work with ~ he is very knowledgeable of the technical aspects and the cost benefits involved in solar, is able to explain them to novices in a way that makes sense, and was very open and honest about our options. The installation was done in two days and the installation crew was nothing but professional in their work and the finished product. We had absolutely no issues during the entire project and can honestly say this is one of the best experiences we've ever had dealing with home upgrades! read more

I was referred to Jeff McBean through my financial advisor who had done a great deal of research into the murky world of solar installation. We met with Jeff McBean several times, and found him to be very knowledgable and straight forward. Our system has been up and running for several months and is not only meeting, but exceeding Jeff's expectations. I would have rated our experience 5 stars if it were just based on our interaction with Jeff, but the Sunpower least is really poorly written, vague and very one-sided. My wife is an attorney and let's just say there was a lot of red-lining. The other drawback is the length of time it took to get the system running. Jeff's team installed the system in 2 days, very professional and well- done, but it took several months for all the inspections and connections to PG&E to be completed. I'm not sure how much of this delay was Sunpower's fault, and how much was PG&E's but it was lengthly. Overall, I think there are a lot of contractors out there pretending to be Solar professionals, and there is also a lot of lousy solar equipment (Sunpower's is rated very highly), so be careful- time will tell, but so far we are very happy with our system's performance, and we were very impressed with Jeff's professionalism, knowledge and straightforwardness, and would have no problem recommending him and his company to you. read more

We did our homework and after reviewing all of the major providers, could not be more pleased with the results from Solar Technologies (both the experience and the cost). From the start, Jeff Parr and his team were responsive and respected our time. Their plan to deal with the various complexities on our residential project was spot-on and communication from Solar Technologies from ordering to install was seamless. The system is beautiful and the install of our rather large system never once inconvenienced our family. The work crew was top notch and 100% respectful of our property, going above and beyond to hide piping and ensure that the effectiveness and curb appeal of the panels were both taken into account.
