    Pretty neat place

We stopped in with couple of kids for dinner. Waitress / server very nice. Food good and enough. Inside was clean. Seats could be upgraded is my only minor issue.

I feel like Yelp saved me on this one. I was here staying and when you stay at South of the Border you get 20% off at the Sombrero Restaurant so basically, "when in Rome". I sit down, pull up, Yelp and see all the negative reviews... But then I think, "I will figure something out" I look at the menu at a place called the Sombrero Restaurant and wonder why there are no Mexican options. Why then the entire property is built on a man named Pedro can't I order a taco or nachos?? Literally the menu is full of burgers, hot dogs, and other sandwiches. I ordered a strawberry Paloma which I will say was good. and at the last minute just ordered some mozzarella sticks because I felt like i needed to order something. And honestly, they were good too, i can't lie. But the crazy thing is with tip i still spent like $25. How in the world? And for ambiance? There is none. It's so lackluster inside. Like a doctor's office waiting room has better vibes than inside of this place. I did see the salad bar off to the side but that was a definite no for me. Thanks to Yelp for saving me a few bucks but I do have to give the restaurant credit because the waitress I had was very friendly and attentive and even if the theme doesn't match the food and all of that, the staff here was still great.

First time here today (Sept 10 2023)... I was very pleased with my visit and the food was very good and the employees are very friendly and accommodating. I had two eggs and bacon with toast and grits.

We had not been to South of the Border in more than 30 years. Being so close to it on our way north, and being lunchtime, we had to stop. In the past, we shopped only. This was our first time eating in the restaurant. We learned that this restaurant was built on the Drive-In spot, so we could not have eaten here 30 years ago. During the pandemic, masks were required for staff and patrons. Social distancing was enforced, and there was no salad bar. Menus were disposable, too. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. Only Pepsi products were served, Husband prefers Coke, but he got a Diet Pepsi. I got the tap water, which was cold and good. I ordered the Taco Salad. Husband got the chopped steak with fries and corn. Our utensils came prepackaged - napkin, fork, knife and spoon with salt and pepper. We liked the Mexican music and kitschy decor, especially the stained glass lampshades. The bathrooms were labeled hombres and senoritas. In the bathroom, the ceramic sinks had fish or hacienda scenes. Sweet! Our food was very good and filling. The chopped steak was cooked perfectly, and the taco meat was endless. As for the cost of our meal, it was reasonable. The quality of food was also better than most fast food restaurants. We were satisfied!

    Name of the restaurant

An unexpectedly delightful breakfast! The omelette were delicious! Brandy was friendly attentive and efficient The art work all around even extends to the beautiful ceramic sinks in the bathrooms.

"Sombrero" is clearly designed to be a Mexican restaurant but instead only offers "American" cuisine (read: frozen onion rings, sad burgers, and watery sweet tea). It was a triple whammy of disappointment that I won't be over anytime soon.

Ah yes... cheese sticks... actually the best part of the meal... and that's not a good thing

Okay I get it... blah blah not authentic... but let me set the scene for you... it's a cold night when we braved to emerge from the campground to take in all the glory that is South of the Border... how could we have known with a giant neon sign of the beloved Pedro that our gastrointestinal systems were in for quite an event... our expectations were low as were the number of people in the restaurant... we went to the cashier and asked to be seated, the cashier pointed inside and told us to follow the hostess... the hostess upon seeing us SPRINTED out of sight... THE GAME IS AFOOT! After a brisk ten steps we caught up to her (this place isn't very big) and secured what I only could describe as a retired Jenga set... luckily a wayward block of wood steadied our malfunctioning table... Our waitress was attentive but a bit on the quite side... paper menus were distributed and the drink orders taken... BTW who serves Icehouse as a beer option? Not knocking it... but wow! Opted for Diet Pepsi and sweet tea for the Mrs... We ordered the most popular app in Latin America... cheese sticks... I ordered the Burritos Deluxe both with beef, the Mrs ordered the chimichangas... both beef as well... Approx 40 minutes later after watching a large party who got there after us and getting their food quickly all while downing round after round of Corona (for the sake of this story I wish they were swilling the afore mentioned Icehouse) we finally got our food! The burritos tasted like I made them... and before you think that's a good thing, trust me, it's not... they were edible and I was hungry, so in the mouth hole they went... The chimichangas for the Mrs were not as good, its as if I had also made those too, again not a good thing... plus she got one chicken and one beef instead of both beef like she ordered, but it did not affect the taste as both of them were awful All in all as much as I love the quirky South of the Border, I did not love this meal... if you are starving then by all means good luck, but just be aware you may be in a campground bathroom stall writing a similar review, lamenting your poor life choice

    Overcooked broccoli

The food was horrible. Steak was just fat and disgusting over all. Broccoli was overcooked and mashed. Tried to talk to manager but my complaint was fully ignored and dismissed.

Food was horrible. Chicken sandwich was like eating a flip flop. Soda was flat as a road frog.

If you want great American food, wonderful service and a small, home-town ambiance, please stop…read morehere. I wanted a burger while on our road trip and I just didn't want to stop for fast food. My honey searched for a local place on the way and we are glad we found this place to stop at in Dillon, SC. Honey had a Texas grilled cheese: brisket with bbq sauce, pepper Jack and cheddar cheese on toasted sourdough. All of what it should be. I had "French onion burger" which was just a GOOD burger with caramelized onions, lettuce and mayo with provolone and Swiss. It didn't need any ketchup (and the viscosity of the ketchup led me to think it was homemade(?)). The bun was much better than I thought it would be- sweet and worth eating every bite. We were also pleasantly surprised that the pasta in the pasta salad was not over-cooked- it was al-dente as it should be and pretty pleasantly dressed lightly. We also had potato wedges- full potatoes cut length-wise in fourths and fried hot, which came with a good amount of (a good heat) chipotle aeoli and sour cream and grated powdery parmesan cheese. I love a good wedge of potato fries and this was a very pleasant surprise. Yeah, we were hungry, so sorry the pic was like half gone. There was a good selection to the menu as well, if burger is not your thing. Also deserts. I was tempted by the carrot cake! Back to atmosphere- this is definitely a working-people's restaurant so don't be surprised to see shelving and a very "homey" bathroom. If that upsets you, then yeah, Door-dash the food. We were both pleasantly surprised. For what we got, a burger under 10 dollars- very reasonable. Kim was wonderful and yes, we expected a little up from a fast food place. Only unfortunate point was the extreme limitation on sides.

I ordered a BLT which was good, not great. The bacon was in small bits and pieces and kept falling out of the bread. It takes good but was hard to eat. I ordered tater tots as a side and they were perfect. My mom got a southern chicken sandwich but the chicken was over cooked and tough for her to eat. My niece had the small shrimp and grits and previous reviewers were right, these were delicious and 5 star worthy. My sister got a classic burger which she said was good although she wasn't a fan of the frozen krinkle cut fries. The seven yo ordered the official dish of all kids under 10, chicken strips and fries. The "strips" were the same chicken as on mom's sandwich cut into chunks. The edges were very tough but the middle pieces were ok. She also wasn't a fan of the fries so we ordered some macaroni and cheese. It came in a bowl and was very cheesy and delicious. The tea and lemonade were good. My sister ordered a Sprite and was served "Starry" in a bottle. Over all the food wasn't terrible but middling except for the grits, those were stellar. The service was good with our waitress checking in on us and making sure our drinks stayed filled. It was a Tuesday so they were closing early at three and there weren't many customers. The building is a bit shabby and worn but clean. There were a few booths but mostly tables.

I was one of the first people in there today and I could not decide what I wanted, so I went for the Southwest bowl that came with a romaine base and I added spinach. To top it off there was purple rice, avocado, chicken, tortilla strips, cheese, and corn. It came with a side of jalapeño lime dressing to drizzle on top. All of the toppings with the exception of the avocado were fresh. The guy at the grill literally made my grilled chicken in front of me and put it on top of my salad before I paid for it--so definitely a star for him. However, the avocado looked a little brown and the dressing just had no flavor. I was super hungry after running errands so I tore up the salad, but I was disappointed overall in the taste and flavor of the food. After a few bites I started to realize how little umph there was in the salad. I was just overall sad and tried to add some additional dressing to try to liven it up, but I just made it worse. The customer service and the positive atmosphere are great, but I would not come back for the food. It's a 3 star for me, sorry Core Life.
