Our Wrangler was Tatum. She did an excellent job. My daughters horse got a little squirrelly in the beginning and she handled it with ease. After that I knew my 12 year old daughter was in good hands. Horses were (mostly) well behaved. But Tatum did a good job instructing the riders on how to handle their horses. McKinney (The young man who drove the tractor to the steak dinner) was very friendly. He spoke to us as he was working with the horses in the corral, And up at the steak dinner grounds. I think cookie prepared a very good meal. I like the fact that he would a little light on his steak cooking. You can cook a steak in a little more, but I've never seen anybody uncook a steak. All in all it was a very good time. I will recommend it to friends and post a positive review on yelp. We will be riding again. read more

My family lives in Colorado so when I visit I always want to ride new stables. I took my mom and my sister for the 1 hour trail. Our guide kathy was amazing! She was so well informed and super friendly. You can tell this girl really loves her job and took the time to become knowledgable about animals, ecosystem, local spots etc. Unfortunately I took a star off for the rude behavior the rest of the staff seemed to exude. One employee (the photographer) was extremely unfriendly. Also, my horse (peanut) had horribly fitting tack. His saddle gullet kept falling past the withers and his bit was much too severe. He'd toss his head with the slightest pressure and when we dismounted I saw he had old and new bit sores. Suggesting and hoping they properly fit that horse and check the others. read more

I'm not fully sure what I expected when taking this ride but definitely not what we got. Don't get me wrong, it was fun and it was a crazy cool experience being that my husband has never ridden a horse before and I haven't been on one since I've been a kid but I feel like for the cost it could have been more engaging. There were some cool facts we learned along the way and our horses were super cute but it was more about getting on the trail and getting back and that's all that mattered much. I expected it to be relaxing and "romantic" I guess and that's just not what this was. We tipped our wrangler at the end of the ride (way more than most do) + paid for a couple pictures the "photographer" took and she didn't seem real appreciative of it. We have all seen movies where an actor or actress is flying across the landscape riding a beautiful horse, galloping at full speed. It looks awesome. Having never enjoyed the experience of horse back riding, I decided to book a trip over the weekend. My ex-girlfriend (Carol) was visiting from San Diego and this would be here first time riding as well. After choosing our ride (2 hours) we waited for an available wrangler (guide) to take us out for our ride. Unfortunately, no wranglers were available, but the gentleman responsible for shoeing the horses offered to take us. The cool part was it was just Carol, myself and our makeshift guide Chuck. We were given horses and some basic instructions, and we were on our way. There were dark clouds moving in fast and the sound of thunder in the distance. The ride itself was very enjoyable. We went at a slow, comfortable pace, climbing several ridges and then finally descending down a long hill. The first hour flew by, but I started to get a little sore around the 1:15 mark. I soon found myself pushing on the saddle horn to relieve some of the rough jars and bumps of riding a horse. The scenery was beautiful and we were able to see squirrels, rabbits and even some deer grazing only 20 yards from the trail. While a little sore, the whole trip was very smooth, until all hell broke loose. We were only twenty feet from the stables, literally at the end of the ride when... Something, we still do not know what, spooked Carol's horse. The horse immediately reared up and started kicking furiously at the air. This in turn forced my horse to spook, but instead of rearing, she took off like a bullet. I really did not know what happened, except all of a sudden my horse was running across a road, then proceeded to jump an eight foot gulch, charge up a hill, turn around, jump the gulch again, charge back across the street and then head straight for a fence. I remember our guide Chuck yelling "pull on the reins!" I yelled back "I am pulling on the reins!" Finally Chuck was able to corner the horse against the fence and grab the rope hanging from the horses neck. I finally had a chance to look back at Carol, who had managed to eventually settle her horse after the horse reared several time, spun in crazy circles, and then dashed off before she finally got the horse settled. Amazingly, both of us being first time riders, we were able to stay on our horses and avoid major injury. Needless to say, it was a crazy ending to a very serene and peaceful ride. I am not sure if I will get on a horse again in the near future... The ranch is itself was a good experience and I would recommend Sombrero Ranches for anyone interested in horse back riding. read more

This place made this vacation my FAVORITE of all time. First: if you want an easy ride around an oval lap GO SOMEWHERE ELSE and quit yer b*tchin. Are you a PETA-wannabee? Go somewhere else. Do you spend all of your vacations bouncing between malls and restaurants? Go somewhere else. Are your children perfect little snowflakes wrapped in cellophane that can do no wrong and don't listen for crap? Go somewhere else. Do you want a good time? Then spend the money and do this. This is an ADVENTURE up a mountain, with rough trail, and views better than anything on tv. Our guide Watson (and his trusty horse, Neptune) is a freaking cowboy. This guy knows the horses. Real deal wrangler. Yes, the trail was slippery. Yes, there is snow, and mud, and deer, and the fresh trail of mountain lion paw prints... you go up high. You come down steep. Yes, your adrenaline will rise. It is worth every penny. Do it. Unless you're stupid. In that case, there are numerous knick knack shops in downtown Estes Park for you. read more

I had a horrible experience on our ride. Our guide was extremely rude throughly the entire trip. The guide was unclear with instructions, extremely condescending and confrontational. My brother, whom planned the whole trip, was s offended he chose to get off his horse and walk the rest of the way. This is not how we planned to spend our say in Estes Park. If this is the way your staff chooses to treat customers and handle the business, I will take my money elsewhere. If you are looking to go horseback riding, I strongly suggest you go elsewhere. I've never ridden a horse before so I was scared to death! Booked a 2 hour excursion online for only $50 a person! They try to set you up with a horse that will match your skill level...which for me was none. It was a bit scary at first. You basically ride through the ranch for 2 hours. It goes up pretty high so it's a lot of climbing and descending with the horse. Hold on tight and be prepared to have your horse or the neighboring horses poop, pee, and fart throughout the whole trip. It was great! There are many places to choose to ride in the mountains but this is definitely a stable you want to go to ensure an awesome horse back riding experience in the mountains. The trail guide was very friendly and watched the group the whole time making sure everyone was okay and stopped to make sure no one got left behind. There were probably over a hundred horses there that they rotated through the different groups of riders. The stable area was very clean and the horses well fed and groomed which was great to see. They are branded but only because different family members own different groups of horses. They also take a picture of every rider at the beginning of the ride and you can purchase it after in paper frames they print them out for you to purchase them in. This was such a cool area to ride in and they have great trails. My group was taken on a rockier more scenic route as the group ahead of us was running behind. The tour guide said they normally don't take the one hour group on it but it was definitely a great trail and one that I've never rode anything like before. I like going horse back riding a lot and wherever I go vacationing but this one was definitely unique. They provide helmets for you to wear if you choose and port a potties. They assign you to horses and then will load you up and you will ride with your own group. All groups were small and private due to COVID. Beautiful place, scenery, and horses. read more

Someone other than "Colorado" Mike needs to manage this place and I hope that Cody Walker sees that. Mike is very blunt and unprofessional. I applied to be a photographer for Sombrero Ranch and during the interview I asked for $15 / hr because that's what I make for contract photography work. I came in on June 29th for training and worked from 8:30am to 5:30pm. The whole time Mike was being abrasive about a cowboy hat. If there's required attire such as a hat, you should provide these necessities. At the end of the day, Mike paid me for the days work and told me to spend the money on a cowboy hat. I was paid $50 for 9 hours of training. That equals out to about $5.55 per hour which is well below minimum wage and well below what I asked. I emailed "Colorado" Mike and asked him if he was able to meet me at my asking rate and he replied "Hahahahahaha, drugs are bad, umkay" which is the most unprofessional response I've ever heard out of anyone. If you are insinuating that I'm using my money for drugs, you are clearly mistaken. I have a wife and two children that I need to take care of. If you are really that worried about your staff being on drugs, you should do a company wide drug test (and you probably should considering your employees told me that other employees come in high on magic mushrooms). Great for beginner riders. We booked our excursion online, and I'm very impressed with the ease and efficiency of their online booking process. The drive from Boulder to Estes Park was worth the price of admission, and we were able to easily find the stables using google maps. The stable staff are very nice and friendly, and the stables are clean. They have quite a few horses, and they did a pretty good job of matching rider experience to a horse. I'm experienced, and this was my husbands second time riding. Beginner riders will appreciate the stairs and platforms used to mount and dismount, while an experienced rider might feel a bit embarrassed using baby steps. We chose the two hour ride. Our guide was very pleasant, and was nice enough to take a couple of photos of us with a beautiful and scenic backdrop. Speaking of scenery, we were awed by the beauty of Estes Park, and the ride delivered on it's promise of beautiful scenery. Guide tips are expected, so you'll want to factor that in the cost. Expect the typical single file, trail experience, walking only. These horses are very well trained and will not trot nor run...even when you ask them to (not that I'll admit to that). The climbs and decents are steep, but the horses handle them gently and admirably. I'll say it again, the views are breathtaking. Wildlife encounters were thankfully mild..a few ground squirrels, mule deer, and birds. I'd come back, and I'd recommend riders check out these stables. This is better for beginners, but regardless of your experience level, the beauty of the park is worth the price of admission! read more

The ranch was fine. I would say 3.5 stars. Everyone was friendly but the experience left me wanting a bit more. All of the rides are walk only (no trotting) and there is quite a bit of elevation change. The horses go single file and you end up on top of the other horse in front of you. We had four kids between 9 - 11 and they had a great time but I think that would have occurred with any of the horseback riding companies. I don't believe any of the stables in Estes Park offer trotting or more exciting rides. We had the steak dinner ride and the meal was pretty good. Nothing fancy - just good food. Overall, it was an ok experience--nothing spectacular but ok. read more

My husband and I took the two hour ride, booked a week or two in advance. We were glad to find a stable that could accommodate my husband since so many have kind of low weight restrictions. We had a great time with our very patient and cheerful guide, Hunter. There was a particularly nervous and inexperienced rider in our group and Hunter handled it all very well and with a great attitude. (I would recommend against horseback riding in the mountains if it is your first time. The terrain will leave you sore and it's best if you're already familiar with rein commands.) We had a blast on the ride and enjoyed the beautiful views. It was pretty dusty, so the masks we had on hand for Covid proved useful. The horses are clearly well cared for and the stables are family run by a really sweet and friendly couple. We were fortunate to get the last ride before they started loading the horses on trailers to evacuate for the Cameron Peak wildfire. This was proactive and a nice sign of their concern for their staff and stock. 10/10 would recommend and gladly visit again! read more

We enjoyed a beautiful 2 hour ride with Shay as our guide. We left from the Estes Park location and it was a hot day. The ranch provides helmets and packs that hang over the saddle horn to hold a water bottle if you want them. There were 2 young girls and 3 adults in our group and she had the girls up front. We were given good, clear instructions and the horses were well behaved. Shay pointed out interesting nature and area points of interest and was friendly to all. There were a few stops(we remained on saddles) to allow the horses to rest and potty though they did that without stopping! The views were gorgeous! At times the path can be steep but Shay told us to lean forward when going up and lean back when going down. This is just a walk, did not trot or run the horses FYI. I'd do it again! My fiancé and I had an amazing experience here. When we arrived all the ranch hands were very helpful. I loved that they triple checked our safety before the ride began. Our guide even stopped halfway for a picture opportunity and to make sure (again) we were secure before we started the downhill portion. We did the 2 hour ride, which i highly recommend. The views were simply amazing. I feel any shorter and we would not have had a great experience and any longer I'd be too too sore to walk! The trial is beautiful, but very steep so it is not meant for those who are very fearful. At one point my naughty horse decided he wanted to try and go around his friends and before i could get back in line we slipped! Of course i screamed so the entire ranch could hear me, but my horse quickly recovered and we were unharmed :) Reading some reviews about the poor safety measures about this place had me cautious, but right as I walked in everyone made us feel completely comfortable. Either they took notice and have vamped up their safety or many people are not aware you ride at your own risk accidents happen everywhere! read more

My first impression was how very tired all of the horses looked first thing in the morning. It makes me sad to think how these poor animals are forced to slave away for the profit of their owners. I am an experienced rider and must say this is the most dangerous trail ride I have ever been on. There were times that the trail was so steep, both up and down, the path so uneven and full of slippery boulders, that all of the horses in our group were in peril of slipping and falling, most likely on top of one another and their riders as the horses were nose to tail the entire time. From the road, you cannot tell how beautiful the property is and how interesting the ride will be. Our group decided on a sort of last minute whim that today was the day we wanted to go horseback riding. We were able to make our reservations at noon online and show up at 4 with our horses ready to go for a 2 hour ride. The trail we took had inclines and declines as we climbed up the mountain. The guide was lovely and made our ride very enjoyable, even for those in our group who did not feel very confident on their horse. I thought that the price was very reasonable and worth every penny. It started off fairly well, however, the female guide's tone began to take on a note of sarcasm, which I choose to ignore. However, the constant barbs and condescending remarks directed to both of my sons, were truly uncalled for. Her instructions were not clear and contradictory. Towards the end of the session, my son had become sick and tired of her rude and condescending remarks. And I don't blame him. If this a representation of how a customer is to be treated, I would say not to visit this establishment.
