Second time here. First time about a year ago had the brisket with onion rings, very good and the service was excellent and we gave a generous tip then and today, and that's what the 3 stars are for. As for the crab cake, not very good no stars for that. An unusual flavor which coincidentally not much crab flavor at all. Don't get it! The texture and cook on it was ok, it wasn't over cooked or wet. They just need to either use a different crab or get some good flavor in there to make it unmistakably a delicious Virginia crab cake. Very disappointing. If they are using canned crab, they need to stop it and use fresh Virginia Blue Crab that has been steamed with Old Bay. Then you will have delicious crab to start with and fresh is best. I know it's expensive but that's what it takes. I don't usually give bad reviews but I do have to share our opinions on here. read more

Once again my wife and I drive around and spent the day seeing the beauty of the area. We saw a couple places we haven't tried yet and found ourselves heading to Urbana for another visit to Something Else. The food has always been amazing and we always attempt to try a new menu item because they have all been awesome. Today, we tried the loaded onion rings and they were out of this world!! Kaleb was great. Amazing service and perfect recommendations. The Tri Tips and the steak and cheese were great, the drinks were perfect and the service can't be beat. While waiting for another restaurant to open up, my husband and I came to check out out Something Different (the place was on my list, but I was going to go later); either way, the restaurant itself was really cute, and I loved that they describe themselves as specializing in 'Fine Neanderthal Cuisine' :D They offer items such as breakfast (Cajun donuts, French toast, scrapple, omelets, etc.), sandwiches (all on a homemade bun), entrees (blow Toads, salmon, chicken, brisket, etc.), soups, salads, and desserts. I tried The Virginia Sandwich (which was featured in the 'American Sandwich' book), which was a smoked turkey and country ham salad spread - I wasn't too much of a fan of this spread, as it tasted like a mixture between Vienna sausages and chicken liver. The homemade bread, though, was really nice, as it was nice and soft! We also tried the Tri-Tip with Horseradish-Mustard Sauce; the edges of the tri-tip was slightly crunch with the seasoning, and definitely better when dipped generously in the creamy, tangy Horseradish-Mustard sauce; we also tried the Pork BBQ, which apparently won the Piedmont award; it's pit-cooked, and this one was just okay as well, and I appreciated the slight crispy ends on some of the meat. My favorite of them all, however, was the Applechain hot dog - an all-beef dog in a 'snuggle bun' - YES, a 'snuggle bun!' It's SO cute, as it's an elongated bun that they scoop out the bread, nestle the dog in it; then, they top it with apple butter and mustard - I thought this was delicious as it was kind of different! I believe that this establishment has a higher rating simply because it don't have much competition in a small town. Super busy during peak Saturday lunch, 20 minute wait @ 12:40. Seated in 18 minutes. Started with Pimento Cheese with Toasted baguette slices in lieu of Celery stalks. The sliced were not toasted, it was a mix of stale and some that were so mushy you could literally fold it in half like a slice of wonder bread. Cheese it self tasted as if was pre-made I ordered the brisket Sandwich with a side of Hoe Cakes (extra charge). Brisket was very good, house baked roll, not so much. I opted for the "regular" hoecakes in lieu of the "Spicy" which included jalapeños. Maybe that was my mistake because "regular" must have meant "plain" as in Very Plain. I don't think these contain a single grain of simple salt or pepper. Total fail. My companion went for a simple Cheeseburger. Reported as average, nothing special, but the bun was "weird". House made potatoes chips which were served along side the sandwiches were VERY good. What saved this review was dessert. - GET THE ICE CREAM! First visit today for an early lunch. Most of the crowd seemed to be going for breakfast food but I asked if the waitress recommended the pulled pork - she did - which is what I got. Very tasty. I really liked the portion size, not too big. Just the right amount. Tried the tomato based sauce and liked it as well. Homemade potato chips were a nice surprise. The side of baked beans was satisfactory. Ice tea glass was on the small side and ran out before I was done and did not get refilled. Staff was nice and the place was popular this Sunday morning. Planning on a return visit with my partner. Wife and I were in Saluda looking at land and decided to try this restaurant on Saturday after reading a few reviews. Most notably for me was a review on this places Bloody Mary. As a big BM aficionado, I decided to try it myself anyway. Mistake. By far one of the worst I have ever paid for. Watered down tomato juice, a big chunk of celery and a lemon wedge. No flavor, horrible. Please, owners and/or bartenders, figure out a good mix, homemade preferably put some flavor into it and garnish appropriately, olives, shrimp, lime, etc. On to the food. I ordered the muffuletta. It came on be an in house brioche bun, very good, same with the wife's burger. Could have used more olive spread but a 5 out of 10. My wife ordered the bacon cheese burger, she let me have some and it was good, patty tasted fresh and not frozen. Chips with both were not a good choice. So bottom line I never truly judge a place totally on a first visit, so we will give them another chance, but there are numerous other options in the nice little village of Urbanna. Stopped here on a whim during a long trip back home. I was with two teenage girls who are very picky. We enjoyed peanuts while we waited for our lunch. The peanuts are sprinkled with their very own house seasoning. Yum! The girls liked it, too. My daughter got the pork BBQ sandwich and the she-crab soup. She put shindig BBQ sauce (tomato based) on her sandwich. She not only raved about how flavorful her food was but she finished it all. Trust me, that's a high compliment from her. My niece got the pork BBQ sandwich with shindig sauce and fries. She loved it as well. She is even pickier than my daughter but she said she loved it. Her plate was spotless when she was done. No small feat. I tried the soft crab sandwich. It was perfectly fried and seasoned. The homemade remoulade was yummy and added the perfect touch to my sandwich. My she-crab soup was hot and tasty. The house made seasoning was perfect on the soup. It really hit the spot. The bread is made fresh too. It was perfectly moist and framed the sandwich just right. We were pretty full but we tried the homemade ice cream. The girls got chocolate and promptly emptied their bowls. At the recommendation of my waiter, I tried the butter pecan. It was to die for! I ate mine slowly and savored every bite. Our waiter, Charles, was superb! It was our first visit and he guided us through the menu and made recommendations that led to a wonderful meal. He was attentive and patient throughout our entire visit. He was exemplary! I tried to get his manager to pay a compliment but I wasn't able to so I wrote a note of appreciation and left a big tip. A small towns got to have a lively place to eat and this is it. From house smoked bbq sandwiches, she crab soup to salads. We sat at the bar and had some beers with our meal which was served by a very friendly barkeep. Everything was delicious, there was a decent tap list and the place seemed to be the busiest establishment in town, even at 2pm. Ill be back for some live music on the next visit. 2nd time stopping here on the drive down 17s to Nagshead. Still tasty and friendly. It was packed full of patrons despite the fact that it was a Wednesday lunch. He loved the Reuben - rave reviews there - and I was surprised to enjoy the smoked salmon sandwich I got. I thought it would be salmon nova raw type salmon, but it was a whole cooked filet. I got it warm on some tasty unknown bread. The herb spread is what really made it delish. It was too big to finish so I brought it with me. New Years Eve and we had a party of 5. The hostess was extremely friendly and the food was amazing. The atmosphere was kid friendly and very down to earth. There was a bar too for the adults who wanted a "little extra" We live on the Gulf Coast and are constantly traveling to find "good" seafood restaurants. This one met all expectations. Crab cakes were delicious, flounder was a little dry but flavorful. The smoked chicken was perfect. Collard greens were some of the best (my brother even went as far to say they were better than grandmas! And that is saying something!) Everything is made in house (dessert, dressing, sauces). Great place! Fun atmosphere with a broad menu. Soft shell crab was delicious though the presentation is a little disturbing. (resembled giant spiders). This dish came with hoecakes. Camping at Bethpage and decided to go out to eat. Searched for nearby restaurants and decided on Something Different. Boy oh Boy! What an outstanding restaurant that has a wide range of options! We stopped in here because we saw that they advertised they had brisket and being from Texas we wanted to see what people here thought Texas brisket was. We ordered the two meat combo with brisket and ribs. The brisket was tender, but it almost appeared that it had been heated on the flat top grill as each side was brown, and there was no smoke ring. Although not bad it CERTAINLY wasn't Texas brisket. The ribs were nice and meaty but lacked any real smoke flavor, so I'm guessing they were done in the oven and just spiced on the outside. The hoecakes were included and we opted for spicy. The "spice" part of them was good, we liked the heat but frankly they we SOOO salty we couldn't give it more than a couple of bites (and my husband likes his salt). The service was ok, but my husband ordered a second beer that never made it. All in all this place seems fine. Stopped by on our way to Williamsburg which was a little of the beaten path. Food was great and fresh. Our waitress was helpful by giving us suggestions. We decided to try two of the suggestions. I had the French toast with bacon. The bread is homemade and it was delicious. The bacon was 5 slices versus two slices from most places. My dining partner had the goat cheese and spinach omelette with rye bread. Both were delicious. Will be back to try the lunch selection. They serve breakfast till 3 pm. I am a BBQ snob - there, I said it. After living in Tennessee and Texas for many years, I know good BBQ, real BBQ, out of the smoker BBQ, not the roast soaked in BBQ sauce that so many call BBQ. Urbanna, I realize you are known for oysters, and justifiably so. But Something Different is really special, and it has nothing to do with oysters. At Something Different I tried the beef brisket, Carolina style pulled pork, and smoked turkey, along with sides, slaw and potato salad. Wow. The pork & turkey were excellent, tender and full of flavor. And the beef brisket was the best I've had in a long time, delicious, my favorite of the three. The sides were perfect, exactly what you'd want. The BBQ sauces were all very good. We used the carry out option, but were greeted by a friendly and helpful staff. Mid-afternoon on a beautiful Sunday, the place was packed. Rappahannock River boaters, Something Different is in the center of Urbanna, walking distance from the dock. I'll be back for BBQ here again, next time I am in Urbanna. read more

In our family, very few places can hold a candle to Something Different. We have been coming to Something Different since as far back as I can remember, and the new store just makes what was once great, even better. My personal favorite meals are the tri-tip as well as the BBQ. When my sisters and I were all home last Christmas, and since we all live pretty far away from Urbanna now (two of us live in different states) we made the trek out to Something Different for some good food. The first thing I noticed when I walked in the new place was how much more space they have (and I have learned they have added even more since I was there in December). The next thing I noticed was that they had craft beer on tap, most of it Virginia beers, which is an enormous plus for me. Since they were getting ready to close for a few days some of the usual offerings were not available, but we were all still able to find some great food. We also grabbed a few growlers to go before we hit the road so that we could enjoy the great tasting beer at home. I can't wait to go back home again just so I can make another visit to Something Different. read more

Something Different is exactly that. While it may look like an ordinary small town restaurant, you really have to get inside and know the folks to get the gist of it. Great BBQ. I'm saying great because I come from Richmond where great BBQ thrives, but this place is a decent contender. Their brisket is tender and juicy, their pulled pork is great and if you're lucky enough to know about tri tips, well, those are great, too. The most fun part about this place is their open mic night from 7-9 every Thursday. Performers can do anything the want on the small stage and it's usually to a very enthusiastic crowd. We have been coming to Something Different before they were in the new location in town. They provide a very rustic, casual, and homey atmosphere. We almost always come for breakfast when we are in town. We have almost everything on the breakfast menu (Breakfast is served until 3pm). The French toast and the omelets are my favorite items to order. The French toast is made up of three to four pieces of thick French bread cooked to perfection and topped with powdered sugar. You get a choice of a meat to go with it. We have come in for lunch several times and dinner a handful of times. They a wide variety of choices on the lunch/dinner menu, from bbq to sandwiches, kickin' chicken, and the applechain hot dog (it sounds weird, get it.). Make sure to check out the store portion of the restaurant and get some delicious homemade ice cream. I have never been disappointed with the food or service we have received. My wife and I come here whenever we are in town. I have never been disappointed with my meal. I particularly like the Bbq omelette, the bbq in general, the tri-tip, and the chicken. The homemade pimiento cheese is good too. Also love the beignets. I could go on forever, but I'll just say, overall, the place is legit. Swung through Urbanna for a night and chose to have dinner here because it was a very short walk from our motel. We had an absolutely amazing experience and meal. It was a Saturday night and they had great live music. The restaurant was full of fun people enjoying the entertainment and the food. Our waitress was excellent and counseled us on what to order - the tri tip and pork BBQ...both of which were incredible. The hoecakes were good too. We came back in the morning for breakfast and were not disappointed. A lively Sunday morning crowd, coffee was flowing, and the omelettes were out of this world. Simply great! Went there twice in the same week while visiting family in the area. Had the Texas Brisket and the next day had Steak and Cheese sandwiches. BOTH served on homemade buns and both a home run. Fries are hand made, ice tea tasted fresh brewed and not that weak stuff. My wife had the buttermilk pie and said it was the best she'd ever had. Service was slow - sounds like a complaint but it's not as both times were had 6+ people in our group. Remember, you're on "Rivah" time and nothing happens fast. The busiest place in Urbanna is Something Different and for a good reason. The food is truly rooted in the locality.We had Hoe cakes with a history lesson to boot. The barbeque with homemade rolls is rivaled by none especially if you add the coleslaw.i am referring to the North Carolina type barbeque. Be sure and try some. Incredible food and a quirky attitude, this restaurant is just a fun place to eat! I had the she-crab soup and it was silky, crabby, and delicious. Very clean flavor. I moved on to the fried oysters with hoecakes and slaw. Trust me, treat this like a taco. Fold the hoecake around some oysters, top with slaw and remoulade. Devour! Spicy, creamy, sweet, and salty. Really yummy! My wife had the smoked chicken (I finished it "for her"). Beautiful smoke ring and smoke flavor, moist and pulls away from the bone, and a sticky, gummy, spicy skin. So great! Again, I suggest a hoecake taco. Hoecake, shredded chicken, NC BBQ sauce, and some sticky sweet molasses. So good! I sucked the meat off of every bone! We then moved on to dessert. She had a peach cobbler that had a kind of spice cake taste to it. Really nice with a scoop of homemade ice cream.
