Sushi's fantastic great menu many options to choose from. Best place to sit outside and enjoy delicious sushi!

We found this sushi spot on our way back from my son's soccer game after seeing the high ratings and multiple posts advertising it as a top Yelp location. With a 4.6 rating, we were genuinely excited to try it. Walking in, first impressions were great. The inside of the restaurant was super cute, the artwork was beautifully done, and the initial greeting was welcoming. Unfortunately, things started going downhill pretty quickly after that. We had a few questions about the menu, but the hostess seemed confused and didn't really understand what we were asking, so we ultimately just gave up and ordered what sounded good. Food-wise, it was very mixed. The sushi roll was phenomenal...genuinely the best part of the experience, and my son absolutely loved his. The shrimp udon was okay, but the portion was noticeably smaller than what most sushi places serve. The salmon poke bowl was very basic and honestly underwhelming. I also asked for spicy mayo, which was never brought out. The biggest disappointment was the service. Paying $4 for a canned soda with no refills already felt excessive, but when my son accidentally spilled it, we cleaned it up immediately ourselves. No one offered extra napkins, replaced the plate, or even asked if we wanted another drink. It just felt inattentive from start to finish. To make matters worse, one staff member was sitting at the bar listening to something loudly on a laptop, which completely took away from the atmosphere and felt unprofessional. As someone who used to waitress, I understand the service industry and I'm usually a generous tipper. But I also believe tips reflect service, and unfortunately this experience missed the mark. After picking up our receipt, the hostess was visibly unhappy with the tip amount and had no issue making that clear which only reinforced the poor experience. I very rarely leave one-star reviews, but for a place with a 4.6 star reputation and "top-rated" marketing, this was incredibly disappointing. This place is 5 starts for atmosphere for a sushi place. It's really cute inside, girly, a fun vibe to grab a cocktail. Which leads me to my next point of why it's 3 stars. We had lychee martinis and I'm pretty sure it was just juice. Not even the slightest buzz on an empty stomach from a martini is not it. I'd rather pay more and have an actual cocktail. The tuna appetizer was fine. Not the freshest tuna I've ever had but fine. The sushi was the same. Could've been better, could've been worse. Wow! So we almost left because parking in this area is atrocious! I'm so glad we didn't leave because it is by far the best sushi I've had in all over Rhode Island!! From the miso soup, Korean dumplings to the Philadelphia sushi roll I had! Very friendly service along with the delicious food! Such beautiful decorations inside that make you smile when you walk in! My husband had the caterpillar remix and dragon with a side of sweet eel sauce and he was in heaven! My son had a Philadelphia roll and the à la carte nagari with salmon and he was so happy and he said it's the best sushi he's ever had! My husband lived in Japan for 6 months and he was very impressed by the quality and taste of the food we had today! We got to meet the chef and he was amazing and humble and sweet! I love the decor inside. Seating was acceptable. Our service was ok. It took forever for someone to come by and keep up on service. The busboy was the most attentive person there. As far as the food, presentation was lovely. Freshness was not so much. I wouldn't ever go back for sushi. The taste of a few of our rolls was just completely off. I expect fresh fish when eating sushi and sashimi. That's definitely not what we got. The dumplings were fried nicely but seriously lacking in flavor. The only flavor came from the dipping sauce. I'm more impressed by frozen supermarket dumplings. RI is full of amazing food and amazing restaurants. Sadly, this is not one of them. I'm not returning. Not even to try the cooked food. Not a great experience at all. We had the crab rangoons to start, which were still frozen in the middle and clearly not cooked long enough. We then split some sushi rolls. The dynamite roll was the best of the three. The others weren't great, especially the spicy scallops which was so fishy. It was overpowering in not a good way. The service was so so. The waiter was attentive but also didn't notice when drinks were empty, forgot an item we ordered, and was slow to get us a check. The restaurant looked nice but it ended there too. The floors were sticky and clearly needed a clean. It also smelled very weird when you first entered - my guess is whatever cleaning product was being used or the bathrooms. TLDR: Has potential, but a few improvements needed to bring it to the next level. I hate to say it, but Somo did not hit the mark I was expecting... the fish was notably fishy in taste and smell and was not as cold as I wanted (which made me question the freshness). While the flavors and ingredients in the signature rolls have a lot of potential, it was missing that zhush... The rolls were too thick, with the rice overpowering the other ingredients. Signature rolls were also pricey ($20/roll)! We also had the grilled oysters, but were slightly too salty for us. A little goes a long way! Came here for a quick bite and definitely not what I was expected. Food okay, service okay, but fruit flies killed it. We ordered: Korean dumplings Crab Rangoons Momiji volcano Dynamite roll Dancing crab Caterpillar remix Unagi roll Fiesta roll Yellowtail jalapeño Overall the sushi was okay. Usually a fan of soft shell crab rolls and was told it's their most popular but it was disappointing. Not enough crab in each bite. Unagi roll was also disappointing, which is usually an easy roll but was mushy. Crab Rangoons felt pasty, but outer shell had good crunch. Could have been cooked longer cause the center was a bit cold. Yellowtail jalapeño, Momiji volcano, and Korean dumplings were great. Overall the seafood felt like a hit or miss. Some things were fishier than others. Service was decent. Asked about hot teas. Didn't have green tea, was told there was oolong but was given regular black tea... Loved the decorations and space of the restaurant, when we went around 5/6pm it was pretty empty. The biggest issue we had though was there was SOOOO many fruit flies. The whole time we were battling them near our food. Killed 3 while we waited for food. Eventually we asked to move to a different table and told the server about the fruit flies everywhere and when we got to one of the booths there were even more. The fruit flies were hanging out on top of the soy sauce containers and table. We just asked to get a to go box and leave. There really shouldn't be this many fruit flies and if so there is a problem. Likely to not come again. read more

Stopped in for sushi. after a bit of hurricane barrier fishing, and walked into a culture fusion of Asian and modern Rhody Gorgeous decor, feels like you're under water and walking through the Japanese cherry blossom gardens...the menu is diverse and creative; chef taking risks that paid off with exploding flavors and delicious drinks. Perfect place for a business or family celebration, corporate dinner, and special event. The owner gave us a warm welcome and was gracious thanking us for noticing the bar purse hooks and phone charging outlets under the bar counter. Walked in here randomly one day and found the ambiance of the place to be very nice and large. Service was a bit slow at times but it wasn't too bad. I ordered a lychee martini it was good but wish they added the actual lychee to the martini but that is personal preference. I visited Somo with a friend and we ordered the Unagi Nigiri, Paradise Roll, Salmon Shashimi, and Jumbo Shrimp Udon Noodle. The food overall was okay. The roll was not too special for ~$20/roll. The salmon shashimi did taste great; it was fresh and buttery. The nigiri was also flavorful with the eel sauce! However, the udon noodle was somewhat of a disappointment; it lacked the traditional Japanese noodle taste and came with a creamy, cheesy base which was a little off-setting. However, the service was great. The waiter was really nice and checked in on us to make sure everything was going well. Additionally, the decorations in the restaurant added charm to the establishment, which was enjoyable. read more

The place is very nice and welcoming. The staff greeted us right when we entered. We ordered edamame and tuna sushi. The tuna was so fresh we ended up ordering around round. Our waitress was so sweet and kind she even gave us a free salad and soups. The soup was delicious the salad was too vinegary. We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc they don't list the kind of the menu and we should've known better. It wasn't bad but definitely not a brand we recognized. Had a very nice dinner. The menu is limited, with only a handful of options for simple sushi. We ordered an app and several sushi rolls. I had a question about the sake and the server let us know she would check with the owner since she wasn't too knowledgeable, which I appreciated. The owner came over quickly and walked me through the options. Service was very prompt and thorough. The sushi was good but I would have liked a few more options. I really enjoyed the decor, and they had the dining room decorated for Christmas. Side note: some of the rolls say crispy rice on the menu. I was anticipating deep fried rice as the base...but in actuality it was just some crispy pieces of rice sprinkled over the top of the roll. I would come back simply for the phenomenal service, which I rarely say ever. The owner's professionalism and charm is amazing! We ordered the grilled oysters, which was heavily overly salty in our opinion and he said he totally understood and offered to make it right. I also enjoyed our conversation about his cooking and the history of the restaurant. The quality and the portion sizes of the fish is excellent. I would say that some of the sushi items are a little bit 'frilly' / americanized, which wasn't bad, wasn't amazing. It just reminded me of something you might see in the show 'Kitchen Nightmares'. The chicken teriyaki was amazing!! If you want something warm and tasty the chicken teriyaki will be a good choice. I really want to try more things on the menu. We arrived a bit early for lunch and it got busy later on. It seems like a popular place for lunch as well. The restaurant looked small from outside but inside is beautiful and well decorated. Not bad for sushi, but not great. Came here with a friend for lunch on a week day and it was empty. A bit of a red flag but we were craving sushi so we decided to might as well try it. We ordered two of the specialty rolls and shared it. Still ended up being $20+ per person after tax and tip for lunch. Nothing too noteworthy, and other places with lunch specials that are probably more worth it. Parking - ample street parking around lunch. Would probably be more crowded at night since a lot of other restaurants are around here without parking either. read more

The aesthetic of the colored rice was the best thing about this place. The inside lighting was terrible which negatively impacts the overall aesthetic of the restaurant. The place was very empty and the waiter did not seem too attentive. Upon receiving our appetizers which were the Korean Dumplings and Calamari. Visited Somo Kitchen and Sushi for the first time a couple weeks ago and was blown away! We sat outside on their patio area area at a high top table. I did not really see the inside of the restaurant besides the host stand where you wait to be seated, but from other pictures online it looks very simple and clean! The service was great and the chef/owner was actually out making rounds at the tables himself! He was delivering orders and checking in to see how everyone's experience was! He explained that he had spent 10 years living and learning to cook in Japan and let me tell you.... his dishes and sushi reflect this! We had the udon noodles off the small plate section. They sound basic because they are cooked in a garlic butter but they were amazing and I have been craving them ever since. Somo never disappoints! Came here for lunch and was so satisfied. The server was very friendly and accommodating. We ordered the chicken karaage and for sushi rolls: Caterpillar Remix and the Richmond St. The sushi rolls took a really time to arrive, but the chef (the owner) came by our table to apologize and check in on us which was very kind! He was the only chef during this time, which is why it took so long. The food was a 10/10; some of the best sushi in the area! It was so fresh and delicious. I was very impressed by the unique options, the fish was excellent, and the sushi chef (owner?) took such pride in his work. The flower tower was exceptional. The added natural colors and flavors made the food experience something extraordinary. This is not a place to have lunch with a deadline- one sushi chef so for two of our eight had to get meals to go as the last roll and a combo plate were not ready prior to everyone else finishing their meals. The waitress was new and she didn't know the menu- I think knowing the items would be in the first day of training, but the owner/sushi chef came to us and happily answered questions. All in all, excellent food, we walked 20 minutes from the convention area which was its own adventure, and is likely worth the trip if you are not in a rush at all. I appreciate the effort but the rolls here are sort of like, if you asked someone to make rolls based on never having had them before but following a recipe. Our first visit after an article in the latest RI Monthly. A nice spot - well designed - but very small crowd on a weekday night (hopefully not the norm). You certainly can find free street parking after 6 PM nearby. Friendly and good service and Nino (sushi chef/ owner?) tries to please. We started with the "sake berry smash" cocktails that were outstanding. Split chicken karaage (best dish of the night!) and "buratta peaches" (only dish we suggested they change; as peaches are out of season - they used Asian pear; should skip the toast and use pears, apples, whatever and it would be a swell dish). And of course we came for "sushi" - not a strong spot in the RI dining scene. Sashimi was strong and the "somo samaurai" roll was huge. However, on the latter we don't like rolls with all the toppings - that is just us. We'd order much more sashimi next visit. So RECOMMENDED! Damages with tip was $110.
