Horrible costumer service and food! All of our dishes were super spicy to the point that they were barely edible... Then the server demanded that we give him a 20% tip. We explained that we were not happy with the food and service. When we checked our credit card statements the following day, we realized that the staff had tampered with our tip and charged us more money. When we reached out to confront them about it, instead of apologizing for their behavior they claimed that they did a mistake when entering the tip amount in their system (Mistake on both credit cards?? SKETCHY.....) Also they kept repeating that all customers leave for them a "20% tip"... Since when is tip mandatory for crappy food and service?? I used to go to their LES location for lunch pre-COVID often. When I saw that they opened a Red Hook location, I was excited to share this with the boy as he's never dined at either before. We ate in their back garden in late 2020. The staff were masked up, had sanitizer everywhere, and turned on the heat lamps for us. The majority of their orders were takeout/delivery, so it was nice to have the back garden to ourselves (and one other couple, seated farther away). The Thai classics were excellent as expected - papaya salad was nicely spicy (when I asked for "regular" spicy, I didn't mean "regular for meek American palates" and I'm glad that the server and I were on the same page), the fried chicken thigh was DIVINE, and their pork skewers (served with noodles) were juicy and flavorful (also that sauce is amazing - same sauce that came with the fried chicken). The standout of our meal wasn't a typical dish like pad thai or pad see ew, it was of all things on the menu - the spicy pork neck/pork cartilage soup that we ordered on a whim. I would like to have this soup once a week. I want this soup served at my wedding. I want this soup served at my funeral. If you like subtle flavors, this soup ain't for you. It's spicy, clean, and a punch of flavors in your face. We get takeout occasionally and the only downside is that I wish they'd have larger portions. But I'm not complaining by any means - it's by far the best casual Thai joint in the area and I always enjoy my meal. Somtum Der is absolutely the best thai option in the South Brooklyn area. First off, their outdoor garden is INCREDIBLE! They have amazing fans set up so it never gets too hot, plus they have umbrellas and very comfortable tables. I love the setup and feel totally safe during these COVID times. Next, the entire staff is super nice. Everyone is incredibly hardworking and efficient, and they really are serious about their jobs. I am never disappointed. Lastly- the food is AMAZING! The dishes feel both attainable and authentic. I love the pad-see-ew and one of their rice stir fry style dishes with a fried egg. The menu has these awesome pictures of each dish so it's really easy to find something you like, even though the names may seem intimidating. They also have awesome lunch specials. Also love their coconut sticky rice grilled skewers!!!! Overall, this is one of my favorite spots in Redhook. We've never been those folks who ordered takeout or delivery regularly. We much prefer to cook at home or go out for dinner with friends...but ah, with Covid all things must change. So these days we typically try to support some of the local Bk restaurants by ordering delivery (preferably not via Caviar/Seamless/Grubhub) and it can be hit or miss when trying out new spots. Somtum Der--which I sadly never got to try pre-Covid--has become one of our go-to's for the consistently tasty and high-quality dishes they serve. Super authentic and flavorful, really prompt delivery. My only warning is that some of the dishes are def on the spicy side, SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE COLD BEER HANDY. Love the food and the service! The somtum (papaya salad) is DELICIOUS! Spicy with mouth-watering acid. I ordered the medium and it is spicy, so be prepared. They have a mild version which my husband said was still spicy. We also ordered the vegan fried rice. It was heavy on fresh vegetables and not greasy. I apprecaite that they have a "regular" menu, as well as menus for gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan customers. Service was great - attentive and polite - and it was easy to make a reservation. COVID measures felt safe. They also have a large outdoor garden area in the back. read more

I came on the week day at lunch time. Server recommended me about Thai Hot pot or Jaew hon. It came with a large plate of beef, liver, tripe, vermicelli, egg and mix veggies. Everything in the set was so excellent, especially assort of dipping sauce. Those fews dipping sauce made the meal more flavorful and delightful. Me and my husband had a table for two by the afternoon time on Monday. The night before, we went to the first Somtum Der in Manhattan and that was brilliant experience even we had to wait an hour to be seated. So we decided to head to Brooklyn because we found out that they have Thai hot pot served before 7pm. So the concept is hot pot had it own speciality Meat platter - This includes pork, beef and seafood (set3). Veggie basket - Compliments the meat well when cooked in the pot. Thai Glass noodles - Personally, I could just have this with the sauces and broths, this kind of noodles probably the nicest I have had. The broth is tasty and the House special sauce is ones not to be missed, all the elements brought together make this a great experience. We actually tried many of their thai food menu, it is also had amazing options like Grilled Pork marinate pork and deep fried chicken are super good! I would love to recommend Thai style minced pork tasted as authentic as when I was in my home country! It's called 'Laab' so that was a winner. And I can't leave without mention this, I highly recommend their desserts Thai tea pannacotta (tiny but flavor town) and Jumba are very addicting, once you took a bite, you'll keep eat it and enjoy it more. Great interior design of the place really made it feel cozy and almost at home, service is friendly and helpful. Went here on a rainy evening with a friend. We skipped lunch so we were on the hungrier side. We ordered quiet a few things to share: papaya salad, Thai prawn sashimi, catfish soup, pad kee mao (asked for a veggie option), sticky rice and rosella beverages. Everything was delicious! Keep in mind the food is spicy and even mild is pretty spicy so if you don't want to have your mouth on fire the mild is more that enough. I loved the fish soup! Awesome spot with equally delicious food. This is a spot to go when you are not going for the usual phad Thai but something unique and spicy and memorable. The outdoor seating under the canopy of ref umbrellas is a must. The seats are a bit basic but you're here for the food and it does not disappoint. Servers are prompt and food comes quickly . We chose mild spice with added chili oil on the side snd the spice was perfect, not incendiary but very flavorful . We had a side of noodles which helps to reduce the spice and if you are timid to Thai spicing, I'd suggest that. We had two salads, which come to share, crispy fish over fried rice, and chopped mushrooms and mint, which comes quite hot and then another of the chopped delicious salads, your sever can help guide you. We do not eat pork and it was a breeze navigating the menu which actually was fish and pork forward. They also have a great drink menu, which is a great way to start. I wanted to like this place, but it ended up being a disappointing experience, overall. We had a larger party and sat on the outdoor patio in the back. The aesthetic was super cute and fun, with beautiful stringed lights and nice patio furniture. We started off, or tried to, with an appetizer of the Crab Fried Rice. It didn't end up coming out until all of the other food did, but it was really good. Everyone enjoyed the fresh crab meat on top, and overall, I wish I had gotten just that as my meal. For the meal itself, myself and several others got the Spicy Pad Thai with Shrimp. Our main compliant here is that the wait staff said they couldn't tone down the spice level whatsoever for some of our friends with more sensitive palates. Additionally, our meals all came out at separate times, which was not great since the meals were all hot, so we couldn't end up eating together as a group. This restaurant is also decently new and don't have their liquor license yet, so it was BYOB, but this wasn't advertised until we sat down. Thankfully we did have some wine from a local winery, and the restaurant provided a wine opener and glasses. Also important to note, the service was very slow. We felt bad as there was only 1 server for all of the outdoor tables, but this led to an overall not great dining experience. Excellent authentic new Thai restaurant that recently opened up in Red Hook. Cozy intimate atmosphere. Great staff - all very friendly and attentive. Cute decor, especially in their bathroom. The food is seriously amazing. They don't have their liquor license yet. My husband went right across the street into Wet Whistle Wines and got a great bottle that complimented our dish well. The dishes that we had were flavorful and had just the right amount of spice. The Khao Pad Goong (fried rice with prawns and eggs) was very good. Kuay Tieo Pad See Eiw Nue (flat noodles with beef) was excellent. The beef was so juicy and flavored well. This was my favorite dish of the night. Pad Thai Mun Poo (Pad Thai with crab meat) was good and very spicy. We ended our meal with the Thai Panna Cotta. It was good and reminded me of Thai Bubble tea. Highlight of the meal, it has everything I expect from a Thai place, definitely will order it again. 5/5 Tom Saab Kradook On - spicy pork cartilage soup. The soup base is almost like a milder and clearer version of Tom Yam soup, very refreshing. 4.5/5 I heard pretty good things about all the soup on the menu, would definitely try some of the other ones in the future. H'orderves Der - deep fried sausage sampler. I usually wouldn't order deep fried food, but this platter take you to Isan. The one looks like tofu is especially good. 4.5/5 Tub Wann - Pork liver salad. The flavor is good, but the liver itself is very overcooked. 4/5 Tum Poo Plara - spicy papaya salad with carb. I live in the neighbourhood and have been pretty excited about this place in general. To date, I've dined in once and ordered from here 3 more times. Each time, the food has just been mediocre (unfortunately). Tastes bland and really nothing to write home about. I thought I just had bad luck with the dishes I selected, so I've tried something different each time - so far, I've had the crispy chicken, crab pad thai (dine-in); pork pad see ew, spicy fish fried rice and shrimp fried rice (take-out). I'd say the best dish in terms of taste/flavour was the pork pad see ew. I will continue to support this restaurant during these tough times - I was glad to have a local Thai food option close to home, and I find the service is efficient, the interior decor is very cute and I am excited to dine in the backyard. I just wish the food tasted better, especially for the prices which are on the high side. Holding out hope for improvement since this place is still pretty new. read more
