Had been passing this spot for years and finally had the chance to stop in. Host was polite and quickly sat us without a reservation - we wanted to sit outside and there was room thankfully. Wait staff was attentive to dietary needs, exemptions and ensured our request was followed to a T. Ordered some Khao Kriab Pak Mor (dumplings) to start along with a pair of mocktails. And an order of Khao Na Ped (smoked vegan duck) and Ginger Chicken (vegan). All served well with good portion. What I personally liked is the 2 dishes took a bit, not slow or long but IMHO taking a little bit always seems it was cared for in prep. Who knows just my thing. The staff has a challenge to accommodate outdoor seating as the bldg doesn't have an inside/back door for them and they must carry food out the front door, down the sidewalk and into the garden area. That's tough but they do it with grace. Chiangmai Diner is the most unique Thai restaurant I've encountered. My first experience was through a Yelp Elite event where we were generously welcomed to a wide variety of items on the menu. I enjoyed the food and the event so much that I've returned and told others to go as well. What I like the most is that Chiangmai's expansive menu showcases aspects of Thai cuisine that you're probably not getting at your neighborhood spot. Many items are Northern Thai style dishes. I'd never had Khao Soi before coming here and I was blown away. The chiangmai sausage is also delicious. The roasted duck curry boasts deep flavor while also maintaining the crispiest duck skin. For appetizers, we started with the crispy salmon belly bites and the moo ping. Frying salmon is risky, but the fattiness of the belly keeps it from drying out. The moo ping is nicely grilled and served with a sweet sauce. You just can't go wrong ordering meat on a stick. As an entree, I tried the Gaeng Awm Nur, a soup-like beef dish served with a side of sticky rice. Our server had been really nice and welcoming, so I felt ok asking how I should eat my meal. She advised that I make a ball of some sticky rice with my hand, mash it a bit, and then dip it into the soup. Thai food achievement unlocked! Now I know what to do next time I'm served sticky rice. There's so much on the menu it can be hard to choose. This is encouragement to go with someone else who enjoys food so you can choose things to share! You won't be disappointed and in fact may find that your regular Thai spots could step up their game in comparison. read more

Incredible meal! We were so glad to see they had late night hours after roaming around Bushwick at 10 pm looking for a sit-down dinner, and the space has such good energy to it. It's the perfect balance of Thai and upscale diner elements, the drinks looked amazing but we stuck with food. I got the signature short rib because I'd seen some buzz about it and it did not disappoint--melty and buttery after roasting for 4 hours, a delicious umami and sweet sauce, sticky rice, some peanutty notes and crunchy toppings, literal perfection. I took the rest home for the next day's breakfast. I tried a little of my friend's pad see ew and it was yummy too!! The staff were kind and the meal came to us very quickly. The best Northern Thai food in Brooklyn. Everything is so tasty and the ambiance is quite nice. Especially the outdoor seating in the summer. The staff is super friendly and very accommodating. They have a bunch of amazing gluten free options including Pad Thai, Fried Rice, steak, seafood, all the curries (some of the best massaman curry in the world!), and even coconut custard for dessert. I have ordered multiple times and the food is amazing. Today, I decided to do pickup order, $100+ worth order. I called at 6:08 and was told it should be ready in 20mins. I gave it some time and even left home a bit later. I got there around 30 mins after the call. Food wasn't ready, which is fine with me, thinking it should come out anytime soon. I HAD TO WAIT ANOTHER 30 MINS!!!!???? An hour total??? I understand if they're busy or the cook is slow and need more time. But do not tell me 20 mins and bring out my order an hour later! Had a great time at a local spot - and I already want to go again. We've heard good things about their lunch special, that they have some great cocktails, and my wife loves Thai food so this was a good fit for a dinner. I'm only giving 4 stars because it was our fault for not trying our usual Thai orders. Of the things that we got that stood out, the pork belly skewer and the crab rangoons were really, really good. I even ran into a neighbor and we gushed about the rangoons - I would go back JUST for the rangoons. I made the mistake of looking at the chef recommended, realizing that the orange ginger chicken was just orange chicken, and that it was a bit disappointing. The dish itself was fine. The flavor was there, but the rice had nothing to it and the fry on the chicken was okay. I would try anything else and again, my fault for getting something super Americanized where I would typically not get this dish. My wife got the beef shank stew - and it was pretty good, but again, we tried out of our comfort zone, and will come back for the pad see ew. The coconut custard dessert I really liked, but a little too gelatinous and warm for my wife, but I thought it was tasty. It was a very busy Saturday night and our server was really hustling so we appreciate making our trip feel worth on a busy night. Really cool inside! Always looking for new Thai places to check out and was excited to see this as an option. Ultimately, we enjoyed our meal and I would consider coming back vs. getting their lunch takeout special. We started with the fried salmon belly, a dish I hadn't had before. The crispiness was shocking when you then bit into such smooth salmon-a really jarring juxtaposition of texture. The sauce it came with was fine but not terribly special. We had also ordered the fish bomb but were told they ran out (we didn't need it). We got three mains: 1) Larb kua Chiangmai: Larb is one of my favorite Thai dishes and this was my favorite of the night. There was a generous portion of meat that was very well seasoned and spicy without being intolerable. The crudite was whatever for me but I did enjoy making small lettuce wraps with the meat and some rice. 2) Gaeng Hoh: This is a noodle dish I was not familiar with and ultimately didn't love. I do enjoy glass noodles but I didn't quite enjoy the flavoring of this-a bit too sour/fermented. This may just be what this dish is supposed to be. I don't understand totally why a noodle dish is served with sticky rice, though. 3) Khao Soi Chiang Mai: We love a good khao soi and this was a really nice dish. The noodles were delicious, the broth just right, and the beef so pull-apart tender. Always appreciate the crunch noodles on top. We made a reservation so got seated fairly quickly. The place itself is deceptively huge, which means that the environment is a bit loud. The decor is fun, tons of lights hanging with decorations on the wall. Because it was so crowded the service was, while super nice, a bit lacking (took us a while to get more water, for example). But the dishes came out surprisingly quick. Stopped by on a Friday evening without a reservation, and pleasantly surprised that we were able to get a seat! It's pretty spacious with plenty of tables at the back. The atmosphere was lively and the decor was nice. I'd recommend grabbing a table rather than the bar since the bar seats didn't have back support and my core strength is terrible. The tables are nice and cosy, and comfortably sat four. Service was friendly but we waited a bit longer than expected for food. I'd say the restaurant was only 3/4 full but there were lots of takeaway orders. It took about 20-30 minutes from the time they took our order to the time we got our food. I loved the Som Tum (green papaya salad, which we ordered mild) - it was nutty, crunchy and well balanced in terms of tartness vs sweetness. It went well with the salty Gaeng Hung Lay, which is the fatty pork belly. I think I'd probably get the beef short rib next time as the pork belly was a bit too fatty for my taste, but it was authentic and that's just a personal preference thing. We ordered an extra sticky rice to soak up the Gaeng Hung Lay sauce; it normally comes with just one portion of rice. Portion size was decent - my husband and I were too full with these two dishes, so will have to come back for dessert next time! read more

Service could be a little faster - we waiting about 25minutes for drinks and the same for the check, but the food came out very quickly after we ordered. Great place to go with a group of friends or for an intimate date when later after the dinner rush. As for food we ordered the roti massaman, kor moo young, and prikking moo grab. I highly suggest the roti massaman and prikking moo grab. I tend to like my pork jowl with less fat and a bit on the tender side. Overall was delicious! I tried my friend's Lin Ping drink and it was sweet & not alcohol tasting. Will come back for sure to try out more dishes. My friends also really liked the Kuaw Teaw Kua Kai and green curry. This is a new restaurant that opened in my hood and my friends and I were pleasantly satisfied with the quality of the food. We ordered: - heavenly duck (Long Island roasted crispy skin duck with bok choy) - pork belly dish - glass noodle dish with shrimp (the shrimp was very fresh!!) Their cocktail menu also looked interesting (my friend ordered a mezcal, pineapple and peppercorn, which was good) and the space was huge. There are tables near the front and middle as well as a long bar AND a spacious back area that seems great for parties AND a back outdoor garden area. Service was friendly. The one thing I would say is there were a lot of tflies near the plants in the front which got pesky. Other than that, I would come back to try more dishes. read more

I was here with a bunch of others yesterday where we had mostly duck though also a few other dishes. This is a new outstanding Northern and Central Thai style restaurant in Brooklyn with the only complaint maybe being the location (being a mile away from one subway stop and around half from another though there is a close bus.) The service was friendly I got a cocktail which I don't remember the exact name but it had lime vodka, mixed berries, and some other type of alcohol as well as ginger beer. It was essentially a fruitier Moscow Mule and I liked it though it was a tad icy. The place is quite large and the music which was a mix of hits mostly from the 90s to 200s was light. We first got the Duck Salad ($19) from the appetizer section. Said salad had a roasted quarter of Long Island duck along with chili paste, red onion, pineapple, cashew nut, scallion, cilantro, and spicy lime dressing. The dressing was delicious with a bit of spice and the duck pieces were tender. It reminded me a bit of rojak with the mix of spicy, sour, and slightly fermented flavor. The Chuchee Duck ($29) listed as a crispy Long Island duck with string bean and Chuchee sauce was my favorite of the main dishes. Chuchee curry which is similar to a red curry but thicker and more coconut flavored. It tends to be slightly sweeter and it has a nice spice kick and is more commonly served with fish. The curry here was outstanding with plenty of heat but also some sweetness and the duck was cooked perfectly. Similar but not exact was the Roasted Duck Curry ($29) listed as a Bangkok roasted duck in a spicy pineapple red curry combined with kaffir lime leaves, pineapple, tomato, julienned bell pepper, and basil served with white rice. This red curry was thinner and less sweet by comparison though I would also say a bit less spicy but the mix of vegetables was a bit different. Solid red curry as well with the duck also being cooked excellently. For non duck dishes, we also got the Prikking Moo Grob ($20) listed as Sauteed prikking paste, string beans, and long hot chili (aka bird's eye) with crispy pork belly and served with white rice. Prikking also called Prik Khing is one of my preferred types of curry being a dry spiced once baked onto various meats. The version here was good though not as well spiced as one I had at either Thai Villa or Malii. The pork was crispy with good tenderness as well. Our final dish was the Short Rib Hung Lay for $34 listed as a popular curry that is found primarily in Chiang Mai and all over Northern Thailand with 4 hour stew with short rib, ginger, garlic pickle, peanut, and potato served with sticky rice. The short rib had an almost Chinese influence as the sauce clearly had five spice powder. It was perhaps a tad salty though the pork was rich and tasty. Their dessert menu isn't online but it has some of the usual suspects with some other options. The Coconut Ice Cream ($12) was served with palm fruit and jackfruit and it was pretty good. The coconut could have been stronger but I liked the mix of fruits inside. Another person had the Thai Iced Tea which was also done like a sundae while the rest had the fried banana which they liked. Food was very tasty. Not much to complain about. The prices were high but that's partially since we had mostly duck (which were mostly half ducks) and the portion sizes in general were large. We got the fried vegetable dumplings and the roti fish as appetizers. For entrees, our group went with the orange chicken, salmon fried rice, short rib and pad Thai. We all loved our food aside from the pad Thai which was bland. Right now, they don't have a liquor license but they say it's coming soon so hopefully it does. The staff was friendly and the place is spacious which is great considering most of the restaurants in the area are small. It's hard enough finding great authentic Thai restaurants, let alone in Brooklyn! I definitely made the right decision in visiting on their first day to try their food, and each bite I took was so authentic it reminded me of the meals I ate in Chiang Mai. Not only was the food amazingly prepared and flavorful, all of the staff inside the restaurant were welcoming and attentive. We ordered the crab fried rice, crying tiger, kra praw kai dao, and more - and each dish we had no complaints. I would return to the restaurant for the staff treatment alone, but the incredible food was definitely a plus! Frankly, I was hesitant to come to Chiangmai Diner given all the great Thai options in Elmhurst and Woodside that are super well priced. We had an early weekday dinner, and we were impressed. Chiangmai dinner is certainly more expensive than the spots in Queens, but the decor is more polished though the atmosphere is still in on the casual side. Full bar with some bottled beers and wines. Handful of interesting cocktails and mocktails too. The menu was long yet approach. It started with the Chiangmai / Northern Thai specialties. They clearly emphasized that these dishes would be more authentic, so I was intrigued by everything in this section. We shared the short rib hung lay (a sweet curry with plenty ginger and peanuts), the gaeng awm nur (stewed beef with dried chiles), and the massaman curry with shrimp. Our absolute favorite dish was the stewed beef. It was slightly spicy. The chiles used were super flavorful. One of the best uses of pepper without making a dish intolerably spicy. Nice aroma from the stew too which I'm guessing was attributed to the herbs and lemongrass. The massaman curry was another hit at our table. Rich and creamy with balanced flavor profile. Very mild on the spiciness but no shortage of seasoning. Excellent viscosity to the curry sauce too. I enjoyed the short rib hung lay too, but it was on the sweeter side. Certainly the most approachable dish for those looking for more familiar western flavors. Service was quick and helpful. Lots of seating good for groups of any size.
