We had a wonderful meal at Son of Skaliwags this evening. We were pleasantly surprised to see she crab bisque and blackened grouper on the menu. We seek these dishes out when traveling in Florida. Made reservations for Father's Day for 6:00 pm for 5 people. Arrived 10 minutes early the indoor seating was a total of 3-4 tables plus the bar. All were full and was told that if we were to dine outside our meals would come out faster, but I would have to come back inside to place orders. Took a picture of the menu, which other than what the protein was did not go into a description or what would come with the entree. Came back in with orders and was first told need card to put on hold then said, maybe just charge for entire ticket might work best. So that is what I did. The card machine also asks for the tip up front as well. Meals come out fried fish platter for two, which I was told was better deal for our two folks than ordering each separately really didn't come out any different then what they were getting if single order. Seabass was maybe 4 inches by 4 inches in size and the grits were not creamy like you would expect, but clumpy. Asparagus was thinner than a pencil and tasteless. My granddaughter's steak looked okay, but she had to cut it with a plastic fork and knife as none was provided for any of us and meals all came out on paper plates. Everyone except for the seabass order came with fries and we had to ask for ketchup and a squirt was added to the paper plates. No one came around to see how we were enjoying our meals or if we need any refills (husband had to go in and get a glass bottle of tap water for the table.) If the staff would have come around and checked on us they would have gotten an earful. I get now why they want you to pay ahead of time and not at the end of service because no one will becoming around to check on you and they want their money up front. I would not have tipped generously for what we were served and how we were not checked up upon. This place to the locals may be a gem, but to folks on vacation wanting a great meal and overall experience it was not. Over priced, lack of service from staff, not so great food and lack of indoor seating. If I could it would have been no stars. read more

We were here for Easter Brunch. To sum it up, chef Marshall and his team knocked it out of the park. It was the best meal we have had in a long time! We were warmly greeted by the chef himself and seated immediately. We started with drinks. My husband had a beer and I had yuzu Mimosa which was perfect. For brunch we're were served chef's choice. The appetizer was a brie with fresh fruit and cane syrup from the chef's family farm. The entree was spectacular. It was a play of shrimp and grits with a she carb soup sauce. The andouille and bacon that accompanied the fish were also delicious. Last but certainly not least was a sweet course of grilled blueberry bread and home made cinnamon rolls. It is a dive bar! Ate at the bar! But the food is amazing from that tiny kitchen. Had the crispy shrimp as a starter which was delicious with a kale slaw and lemon aioli. Then had the fresh blackened grouper which was a larger piece of fish with potatoes and asparagus. Delicious. Had to have dessert after seeing the dish ordered by another diner. It was a lemon cake with blueberries that they grilled with a light lemon glaze over. The service was excellent and the drinks good. It was a five star dinner! I once had a steak dinner at Emeril Lagasse's restaurant in New Orleans thinking nothing could ever beat that but Son of Skaliwags has topped Emeril's! The place is crowded and charming and I'm happy to see it continue. While I'm aware of the difficulties of the tip economy in the service industry, a 22% "service fee" seems excessive, especially combined with a 3.5% card fee + 5.5% tax. Since I personally can't afford more than 25% charges added to my bill, I won't be able to dine as often as I'd like, but if you can afford it, you won't be disappointed, but expect to ASK for your change, when paying cash, and expect your server to act a little huffy, when you do. read more

The menu is limited to whatever awesome food they are able to procure for a particular week (it's on the chalk board). The prices may also take you aback, but that's what outstanding food costs. Were my crab cakes as good as those at Old Ebbit Grill in DC? No, they were not; but they were close. My scallops, however, were the best I've had away from either coast. In addition to the great food, they also make excellent drinks. Plus the staff is friendly and attentive. Appropriate COVID protocols were evident to me. The restaurant is small (there is outdoor seating when weather permits), so I recommend texting for a reservation. My experience was awesome and I plan to return. read more

I had the blackened grouper with potatoes and asparagus which was very good and my wife had the Ahi Tuna which was ok. Also had the crab fritters and some type of blueberry cake desert. Not quite what she was expecting, she would try something else next time. Service was good, we had a seat reserved at 6 and they sat us immediately. Hell's Bells! What a cool place with outrageously good food! Yes, it is a dive bar atmosphere that fits maybe 14 people at the bar and another 20ish people at tables. We absolutely loved sitting at the bar watching the chefs cook up crazy good meals in a tiny kitchen. My wife had the scallops, I had the bone-in ribeye. Both came with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus and were cooked perfectly. We watched plate after plate of delicious food walked by: sea bass, grouper, shrimp, steaks. The staff was very friendly and engaging. Where else can you get a gourmet meal while wearing whatever you care to wear? Yes the owner. The wait was an hour but well worth it. The place has zero ambiance which is the unique brilliance of the adventure. It is advertised as a 5 star dive bar. We got our table. Who shows up to take our order? Again the owner/chef/bartender/host/bus. The guy is a whirlwind. No he is not a one man show, he has an amazing staff and they work. The food is the next adventure. "5 Star Dive bar" is their motto and it is exactly that. It is a very small establishment (probably no bigger than 450 square feet) but it is very well managed. The bar is almost as charming as the staff. They are at the top of their game...knowledgeable, friendly, and extremely attentive. It was crazy busy and once you eat there, you will discover why. This is NOT "bar food". There are 3 chefs on site, one was the bartender, one was in the kitchen and running the food to tables and one was the server...and they have the food on lock. It rivals some of the best upscale restaurants in much bigger cities. No standoffish staff, white linen table cloths or pretense. This place is a must if you're ever in the Door County area. Even if you're not, take the drive, see Lambeau Field, listen to some great music on the shores of Lake Michigan and have an incredibly memorable dining experience at this unassuming little gem in Algoma, WI. Marshall greeted us upon arrival with a "welcome back". Loved that! We ordered drinks and waited for our table. We only waited about 15 minutes. When we were seated, Melissa was our waitress and she was awesome. She asked about our drink refills, how to split our bill, and when our food arrived, asked how it was as well. She was friendly, attentive and really built a connection. We will definitely be back when we visit the peninsula again. read more

He focuses on a smaller menu with fresh foods. We have been here twice and loved it both times. Had the filet and the lobster ravioli. Both were delicious! Both times we ordered the shrimp appetizer and crab bisque. Unreal. It is a small operation and a labor of love. Both times we were there the chef met patrons as they enteted, welcomed them and answered any questions while explaining the menu. Young guy who is very talented and very engaged in his restaurant. To be fair this is a high end restaurant tucked into a dive bar atmosphere. If this was a "normal" restaurant the rating would be higher, but when you charge fine dining prices, I believe you should be compared to those standards. We were so looking forward to an evening at Skaliwags, and have been waiting for the chance to finally try what all my friends have described as an excellent experience. But on this day, sadly, my wife and I were underwhelmed. There were some great things (like the crab bisque) but the rest was just pretty good at best. Our appetizer (crab Rangoons) were a bit over done, maybe even a bit burnt. My wife's scallops were underdone. Should have had sent them back... If fact there was another customer that sent their scallops back while we were eating our meal. My fish was good, but like the scallops, it wasn't a very big portion. I believe things must have changed or are changing at this restaurant because we got there right at 4:30 expecting a big line. Surprisingly we were one of only 3 small groups waiting to get in. While we ate, on a busy "door county vacation weekend" in early fall, there were only about 6-7 small groups of people that were in the bar/restaurant. We heard that the chef/owner now cooks at his new location in Kewaunee, so maybe the crowds have followed him there? I will tell you there are some cool things about this place. The staff was young, friendly and seemed excited to be there. The drinks were good and the menu was interesting.
