We had a fabulous meal tonight at Gibs on the Lake in Kewaunee. We started with sour old fashioneds. They were excellent- nice and strong. It was German night so we shared the "gypsy" schnitzel and the German meatballs. The schnitzel was particularly good. The sauce on the meatballs was also so tasty and the red cabbage was just right. I came here with friends on a Thursday evening. We arrived at 4:00 just ad they were opening. We sat at the bar for a bit while waiting for everybody to arrive. The bar is well stocked. The bar tender was friendly and accommodating. When the rest of our party arrived we were seated in the main dining room. This place has all the ambiance of a 70s supper club, something I think is nostalgically quaint. Wednesdays and Thursdays, they offer a German quinine. After reviewing the menu, I decided to order a German dish that is regularly featured on the daily menu. I decided on the Gib's schnitzel. This is a breaded pork loin fried then topped with pumpernickel, sauerkraut, pork sausage, and swiss cheese dressing and mushroom gravy. I also ordered the French onion soup. The soup came out right away. It was nicely flavored. There was cheese melted onto the soup. It was too much as it was one big glob that left big strings from the spoon to the bowl. It was good, but it was messy to eat. The schnitzel came out shortly after the soup. The pork loin was juicy and tender with nice breading on it. The toppings were all mixed together into a brown goo. I could not differentiate between the saurkraut end the mushroom gravy. The flavors all worked well together, but the appearance was less than appealing. The meal was ok, and the price was about right. If I order this again, I will ask for the saurkraut and gravy on the side. read more

Been driving past this place for years. Finally decided to give it a try. Reservations are highly recommended on Fridays. The dining room is a bit dark with brown wainscott and magenta wall paper. The view of the lake is spectacular. The service was spot on. Very attentive and friendly. We had a artichoke ramekin for an appetizer...it was really good. Their bread is house made and really good. Then we had pasta dishes with shrimp. Which we enjoyed a lot. A couple of well made gin and tonics complemented our meal. Bottom line, this is a classy restaurant that specializes in steaks and seafood. If you want to go vegetarian you'll need to stick to salads and sides. We'll be back. read more

I had chicken Marsala which was watery and tasteless no matter how much salt & pepper I put on it. Basically 3 chicken tenders, but mushrooms were fresh. Classic Supper Club and very nice dinner outing on a wintery night. We had 4:30 reservations but it wasn't necessary as place was not very busy and there was plenty of space and atmosphere was relaxed. We had a wonderful server, Melissa. We enjoyed strong mixed drinks and fantastic entrees. Breads were great-especially brown bread with baked in sauerkraut. I had salmon which was the nightly special. Excellent! Also had the highlighted salad with mandarin oranges and feta. Also the carrots and rutabagas-quite tasty. Husband had a piping hot bowl of excellent clam chowder. Also sirloin with mushrooms and hash browns. He thought it was delicious! Steak tender and properly done. Lovely view of lake from our table. Pink Squirrel ice cream drink to end the meal. Top notch! Decided to have dinner with my mom. This place never disappoints. We both started out with old fashions, which are muddled and made perfectly. Then we had the scallops and the 9oz filet mignon. Both entrees were delicious! The filet was almost like a tower, about 3" tall and I added the garlic and mushrooms. My mom has the scallops which were served on a bed of spinach and topped with sun dried tomatoes and capers. She loved her food as well. We started with the fried asparagus, and then I had the fillet and shallots and my wife had the Salmon and asparagus it seemed like there was only two people working, one male at the bar, and the other female who was the waitress I believe, and then there was possibly a cook. They were a few people there, a few in the bar area,, but not many in the dining room. It was just me my wife and one other table. All the other tables were empty though that could've been due to the time that we got there which was later in the evening. Food was hot but bread was a little on the cold side but it was soft and tasted fine. Fillet was cooked as requested and baked potato also very nice and came with butter and sour cream. Wife said, salmon was nice, moist and delicious. Our appetizer, the fried asparagus, and the asparagus that came with my wife. Salmon was also cooked very nicely. For dessert we had the lava cake which was a little underwhelming. It was just a small lava cake with chocolate inside and whip cream on top. No ice cream. All in all it was a pretty good meal however, it was a bit on the expensive side. so be sure to check the menu and prices before you go. read more

What a gem. This is what small town Wisconsin spots are all about. Great service, great food, and what an awesome view. Came here on a Saturday night after exploring the lakeshore countryside. No wait if you sit at the bar and I order the cream of asparagus soup as an appetizer with a draft Spotted Cow. Simply phenomenal. First. the soup was clearly homemade, with love. No corners cut here. Light, creamy, and the presentation said someone cares about the food made. My Spotted Cow was poured perfectly, and this matters to me, Gib's actually cleans their draft lines. Can't tell you how many times I've ordered a draft beer and it tastes like boo-boo because the crew are too lazy to flush the lines. Well done. I ordered the walleye and it was great. Fresh, and it was actual walleye, not Xander Pike. Real Sconnie folks know what I'm talkin' about. As a bonus, the patio, right next to Lake Michigan, gave a great view while enjoying a stogie. Can't say enough good about Gib's. Please, Kewaunee, support this local gem as much as you can. They don't make'em like this much anymore. read more

Where to start? This was our first time at Gibs. We were a table for two. The environment is great if your into 1984 decor. I'm pretty sure that's the last time anything was updated. The server was polite. We heard about the daily specials by overhearing her tell another table. She failed to tell us at our table. Calamari as an appetizer was far from worth $17. A few pieces of over fried, hard as a rock calamari, served with the wrong dipping sauce. Entrees: We ordered the Ribeye with the loaded baked potato, and the Tiger Shrimp with Alfredo pasta. The steak that was delivered wasn't a ribeye, it was a sirloin. The steak, being the wrong cut of meat, was incredibly delicious and tender. The loaded baked potato, as far as I can tell, was potato salad scooped into a baking dish and melted cheese on top. It was absolutely terrible. The tiger shrimp was "ok". But the Alfredo pasta was 100% sour and inedible! We paid our $130 bill and left. We will not return. Update: What's worse than a terrible dining experience? Getting home and immediately projectile vomiting!! Will NEVER go back. And will spread this experience far and wide. read more

Make sure you call for a reservation, we didn't have one and waited over an hour to be seated. They never told us how long the wait was going to be just "you are after them". Old fashioned was super strong, to the point it wasn't drinkable. Ordered poutine app, fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp and French onion soup, and sirloin with loaded baked potato and cream of broccoli soup. The alfredo was sour tasting, the noodles were rubbery, and I don't even know what kind of potatoes I got. Waitress never came back to refill drinks. Awesome view though ;) read more

So far I tried quite a few Restaurants which offer German food , but until now didn't find one that good like 'Gibs at the Lake' ! Had a reservation for 6:30. Show up at 6:30, don't get seated until 7:00, 15 minutes later our order is taken. 45 minutes for the food to arrive. Why bother taking reservations if you don't get to start eating until an hour and a half later? On top of the complete disregard for social distancing and masks, the service was terrible. read more

Three of us went to Gib's for the first time Saturday. We went early and were the first group seated in the dining room. What a wonderful view of Lake Michigan! We were very pleased with all of the choices on the menu, which made it easy for us to find something. I had the grilled walleye, which was a very good size and cooked to perfection. I had the loaded potato, which is an au gratin potato dish. I also could not stop eating the bread - a homemade white and another bread that was rye with sauerkraut in it. One of the others had the bbq ribs, which were covered with a smoked paprika sauce and fell off of the bone. The other entree at the table was a thick cut pork chop that was accompanied by sauerkraut. The chop was juicy and the sauerkraut had a mild flavor. Our server was Mary, who we found out was one of the owners. Her husband, who is the chef, came out and introduced himself. It was good to see the personal touch they provided. All of the food was very good, good portion sizes, and very reasonably priced. We will definitely go back - maybe on Wednesday or Thursday for German food. read more

The first thing you notice about Gibs On The Lake is its fantastic location. Tucked in between Kewaunee and Two Rivers, this classy diner is right on Lake Michigan. The outside is a cozy looking blue building, and the inside decor is all nautical themed, which is extremely fitting. There are large bay windows all along the side of the building that faces the lake, so regardless of where you sit, you have a fantastic view. The food here is absolutely out of this world. They have a German night during the week which has some of the most authentic recipes I have yet found in this area! But my personal favorite is "Mary's Favorite Pasta." All of the noodles and sauces at Gibs are home-made and to die for. This pasta dish features beef tenderloin tips, sun dried tomatoes, shallots, a phenomenal marinara, and everything in the dish pairs well together. I have never had a bad meal here, ever. I would say that the price point for Gibs is rather high, averaging around $15-$20 a plate, with some of the higher-end seafood dishes going up to around $30-$40, but it's well worth the price, at least in my opinion. read more

Every year we come back on our door county vacation. Make a reservation... they get full. Come a little early and sit at the bar. They make several versions of the WI old fashioned. I like sweet with cherries and seltzer. The artichoke and shrimp appetizers and onion soup were delish. We ate every drop of the sauce on the shrimp. The entrees took way too long to come out. Not sure what happened. Looked like we were the last table of the night, but it was almost an hour from the time we ordered till the entrees arrived. Yet, everything was yummy. We would have had WI grasshoppers or dessert but we were the last people in the place and it was just too late. Bummed that the food took so long, but overall a really good night. read more

My husband and I visited this past Wednesday evening, as the result of Gibs being listed on an online "8 Wisconsin Supper Clubs with Gorgeous Lake Views". I don't know if part of the problem was that it was a night before the 4th, but the service was what left a lot to be desired. We arrived on time for our 7:30 reservation and waited awkwardly at the hostess stand for several minutes while person after person told us that someone would be with us shortly. Finally the lady who was folding napkins got up and seated us. After several more minutes our waitress still hadn't shown up, so the same lady took our drink order. She checked back even later and then finally summoned the waitress for us. I should mention that it wasn't busy - most of the tables were open at that time. My shrimp on wilted spinach was very good; my husband had the New York Strip and it was flavorful and perfectly cooked, but tough with a lot of gristle. The Old Fashioned's were OK; because of the long wait to order, we had a second drink, but actually had to stop eating and wait for the wine to be delivered so that we could have it with our meal. I gave a review of 4, although I rounded up because of the friendliness of the staff. The lake view is good, I don't know about "gorgeous". The food was good, not 5 star. The service was pretty horrible, covered up by friendliness. We won't be back as it wasn't worth the 50 mile drive. read more

I've eaten here before, years ago and felt the prices were high but I loved the scenery and the food was good. We showed up to a nearly full parking lot and a packed bar. I think the locals know something we didn't... The food was hit or miss and still way overpriced. We ordered calamari as an appetizer. It was good be the portion was small. The pork piccata was good as was the chicken marsala. The sirloin steak was fine, but under seasoned. What was really horrible though was the prime rib. My husband ordered a king cut that was at least 1/3 fat. The waitress said that the cook did cut a slightly larger piece since it was so fatty but it was not even close to being worth the $29 cost. We expressed our displeasure to the server twice and it became clear that nothing was going to be done about it. No offer for a different piece of meat nor a discount. Overall, for Chicago prices, I expect more. They need a better meat purveyor and they need to freshen the place up. For those prices, their guests should leave completely satisfied with their meal. We were on a golf outing at Fox Hills (Par 5) and needed to find a last minute place for dinner. I "yelped" & glad I did. This place is really good. The not so good 1st. We walked in (only 3 of us) and the place was not busy. We waited at entrance for a few minutes before I flagged someone down. The lady said her server was busy so if we could wait at the bar for a table, that would be great. Again, the place was not at all busy. I would say 90% empty tables. Kinda confusing. We werent sure what was going on. We grabbed a drink then we were seated. Unfortunately, we were not able to sit outside on a beautiful night. Kinda strange considering it's called Gibs on the Lake. Service was slow. We literally saw the server put salads down on 2 different tables and noone was there. No one. Maybe 5 minutes later, 2 couples sat down. Weird. The Good: Out server was friendly. We started with more drinks, 2 types of cheese curds, soup, salad & warm bread. Excellent. The butter was even warm. Nice touch. The service was really nice and friendly. However the food was totally off. My ribeye steak that I got was not the medium they said it would be was totally well done. My daughter's pasta seems like it was 5 days old. The cheese on the burger was toast. And the baby back ribs my husband order were pretty dry.
