Make sure to always bring your room key card for swipe access. Free breakfast in the hotel lobby that starts 6:30 AM on weekdays and 7 AM on weekends. No EV charging available, but free overnight parking. Appearances wise, the rooms are slightly newer/nicer than the Hampton inn next door. In reality, you can see how dated this hotel is: the corner pipe paint is peeling off, slow toilet flush, tub is updated, etc. I talked to the hotel and they do a refresh every 8-9 years. I think this hotel has been around for 30 years and it is the oldest hotel amongst the three: Hampton inn, homewood suites, and springhill suites. Breakfast selection changes on a daily basis, but it is essentially the same as the Hampton Inn next door. I wonder if they run the same menu on a daily basis with slight variation. Public bathroom is also located on the first floor if you need to use it. Nice lobby area. If you need anything like extra towels or trash bag, you have to go downstairs and ask from the receptionist. I don't think they have enough staff to send stuff to your room. Love the fact that the room has pots, pans, plates, utensils, dishwasher, etc for convenient kitchen needs.

I'm not someone who rushes to Yelp, but this stay earned the effort…read more I recently stayed at The Merchant for the second time, and whatever magic existed during my first visit is gone. The biggest issue: the hotel hosted a large, ticketed public event that completely took over the main lobby--with zero advance notice to guests. I woke up to a lobby packed with strangers and nowhere to sit or gather with my family. I've never stayed at a hotel that allows a public event to fully overrun its only common area without warning paying guests. And no, "just go somewhere else" isn't an option--there is nowhere else. There are no additional common spaces and no elevator. Since we were meeting elderly family members, climbing three to four flights of stairs to our room wasn't possible. The lobby being unusable wasn't a minor inconvenience; it was a dealbreaker. Operationally, things only went downhill. Check-in is at 4pm, but arrive after 5pm and there's no one on-site to check you in. Checkout, however, is rigidly 11am. Our room was never cleaned during the stay, despite leaving the "please clean" tag on the door. Because of the limited staffing hours, we couldn't even get fresh towels. Then there's the mouse. I saw one in the common area and notified staff. Nothing was done. Food is left out uncovered for guests, which I promptly avoided--because "boutique hotel meets rodent buffet" isn't really my vibe. What's also new: some sort of train or underground rumbling that shakes the building roughly every hour, offering a front-row seat to what feels like an earthquake simulator. If this were a budget motel or a Holiday Inn, I might shrug and move on. But this is a $500-per-night hotel, and at that price point, these issues are unacceptable. Until these problems are addressed, I wouldn't recommend staying here--and I certainly won't be returning.

Additionally, it's only a 10 minute walk from the train station. The amenities all seem pretty new as well. The only thing that was annoying is our key cards stopped working 3-4 times. The front desk was always willing to help, but I wasn't expecting our cards to stop working so much. Other than that, it was an incredible stay!

Great location -- very walkable to many of the attractions in Salem, easy to drive elsewhere, and…read morevery close to the train/T if you're coming in that way or want to take it into Boston for a day. We did have a car, and while the attached garage made things convenient, the daily parking fee felt high for what it is (almost $30 a day). Just a heads-up. Also, there is self-park, and at risk of sounding cheap, here's a tip to save you on some tips... valet is optional, and I don't think I've ever been in a hotel where it's less necessary. Self-park is the same price, but you spare yourself the constant tipping, which feels like one more tiny cash grab unless maybe the garage fills up at certain times and they have to move cars elsewhere. The room was nice enough for a short stay, though some acceptable / common deficiencies are starting to show -- scuffed walls, certain outlets loosening up so the prongs don't stay in well, one bulb burned out, etc. But the beds were comfortable enough, the bedding seemed clean, the bathroom was also clean and the shower worked well, and the room overall still had a reasonably new look and style to it. The pool was also clean, warm, and the overall pool area looked well maintained with plenty of clean towels available and a good amount of seating. The pool deck definitely gets a little slick when wet, so watch your step. Breakfast was almost exactly what you'd expect from similar U.S. chain hotels -- pre-made omelets or scrambled eggs depending on the day, home fries, paper-thin bacon or sausage patties, a few cereals and yogurts, a make-your-own waffle station, a couple fruit options, a push-button juice machine, instant oatmeal, etc. There's a good amount of seating, and a handful of tables have their own TVs (though you may have to hunt for a remote, and you might get some cross-room interference if someone else points theirs the wrong way). One interesting detail: breakfast isn't on the ground floor, and you can't reach it via the elevator without a keycard. I assume that's intentional to reduce non-guest walk-ins. Overall, I'd stay here again for the location and reasonable price -- just with the caveat to budget for the nearly $30/day parking or have a workaround ready. The convenience makes it tolerable, but it's definitely something to be aware of.

The rooms are spacious, and the several simultaneous catering events, along with the large number of families dressed for a wedding, are a testament to the hotel's popularity. The Sophia Restaurant serves quality breakfasts with good coffee, fresh fruit, and real scrambled eggs. Guests can also request a made-to-order omelet. On the downside, the bagels were comparable to those found at lower-tier Marriott brands; perhaps it is time for an upgrade. The restaurant is elegantly decorated, and even if you choose the buffet, you can spend more time at your table talking with your companions or enjoying the view because the coffee is served to you. She and much of my family really like this place and rave about it, but my overall first impression was definitely a mixed bag. My mom made the reservation for Saturday at 4:45pm in the dining room. We arrived a little early, so she showed me around the beautifully renovated building. When we checked in with someone, they redirected us to the bar area downstairs as they were holding a private event in the main dining area. Okay, not a big deal to us. However I could understand if someone else might get a little annoyed at being told they had to go to the bar area when they specifically asked for the dining room on their reservation. I have to say that I do love the downstairs bar area, it's classy and has a vintage speakeasy vibe. We were quickly greeted by one of the guys working the bar who was super nice and did a great job. For a drink I started with their version of an espresso martini, which was a good start to the food experience and gave me high hopes. They brought us out some popovers which to me were just okay. For an appetizer we got some buffalo chicken dip, which was quite delicious. For dinner my mom got a Caesar salad (which I tried a little bit of and thought was good) and a flatbread pizza that was on special. I decided to be a little bougie and went with the braised short ribs, and I regret to say that the dish fell flat for me. The short rib did come apart okay when I stuck my fork in it, but it was kind of chewy, bland and overall really didn't have much flavor. The menu also states that the short rib is served with broccolini (which is a milder, sweeter version of the green vegetable) but it came with regular plain broccoli instead, which I was also quite honestly disappointed by. With all that being said the polenta was my favorite thing on the plate. I'm a little conflicted. The place is beautiful and the staff is so nice. But with how much it was hyped up to me, I was a little let down. I'm kind of thinking that I should've went with another dish? I really want to truly love this place, so I'm sure I'll be back with family at some point to give them another chance.

Likely the worst restaurant meal I have ever had…read more I ordered the short rib and I am still not sure what they did to it to make it so dry, hard, and rubbery. I looked like part of a shoe or wood. As it was placed on the table, one of my co-diners leaned over to whisper to me that it looked disgusting. I am guessing it was cooked, frozen, and then WAY over microwaved. (Who microwaves short rib?!) Regardless, it was awful. The polenta was runny and had big lumps of cheese all in one corner. I assume that was supposed to be mixed through. And the broccoli was so over cooked as to be a disintegrating mush. I cannot believe this left the kitchen. I didn't complain because I did not want to disrupt everyone else's dinner. I should have listened to all the other one-star reviews. Bell Inn service was friendly, lively, and casual and the building is really something special.
